i have a 90" tarus and it will run if i hold the key on. when i let off the key the car shuts off. what is wrong with it?
  • badgerfanbadgerfan Member Posts: 1,565
Sounds like it might be a problem in your starter switch in the column?
  • pfordpford Member Posts: 2
i haved changed that and the key, you know what else it could be?
  • badgerfanbadgerfan Member Posts: 1,565
Explain things further. "When you hold it on", where are you holding it? Are you holding the key to the maximum clockwise position, where the starter is engaged? Or are you holding the into the normal run position, and it will not stay in that position, but klicks back to the position where it would be if you pull the key out of the ignition?

Seems this problem should be pretty simple to diagnose by an expert. Maybe it is time to get it into an experienced mechanic. Tauri/Sable have been around long enough and with enough of them on the road, that most good mechanics have probably seen every problem at least once!

Hi all, nice to be here! I have a 1994 Ford Taurus that had the engine replaced as well as the transmission about 6 months after we purchased it 3 years ago.
About a year ago, my then-husband was driving the car and said the water pump went out (the bearings). He parked it at a friend's house immediately and it sat for a few months; then we towed it home. He put a new water pump in it and ever since then, it will turn over continuously but will not crank. It sounds as if it is out of time or cannot quite get enough fuel. I have been told it could be a myriad of different things; crank sensor, camshaft sensor, timing, fuel pressure....but none of it started until the incident with the water pump. He says it did not overheat, and the oil looks fine. Also the air filter has been removed (not sure how long it has not had one) and the mass airflow sensor is pretty well clogged.
Any suggestions on what to look for?

I have a 2000 Taurus wagom w/Flex-Fuel, It has 70,000K miles. It's running like it is starving for gas,is there a fuel filter between the fuel tank and the engine. If not what would cause it to run like this. Thanks so much,
    dickiedo
  • badgerfanbadgerfan Member Posts: 1,565
There is a large cannister fuel filter underneath in the fuel lines held in place with a big strap and two plastic clips that come off and are replaced with new ones that come with the filter. On sedans, this is located underneath the right side, below the rear seat. Be careful as you should let the car sit for a while to bleed off the pressure, and you will spill some gas while changing the fuel filter.

Could be other things causing the problem, though, such as a fuel pump. I have not had this with my 2000 Taurus, but my neighbor has had two fuel pumps replaced, the second one soon after the first, which was free. Could also be injector problems, clogged air filter, or probably a number of other issues.

you have mixed up with someone else, I* have a fuel problem. thanks dickiedo
  • badgerfanbadgerfan Member Posts: 1,565
    Huh?

Your post number 3 asked about whether there was a fuel filter and I answered it. I am not mixed up. I believe you may be, however.

I have a 96 taurus with the 3.0 6 cylinder engine. When I start the car it instantly loses all rpm and stalls. I need to floor the pedal to keep it running. It can then start and go for 2 days without a problem. I just had the S belt replaced and te water pump. Prior to that I didnt ave a problem. Any thoughts would help.

I have a 94 Mercury Sable 3.8 engine. The car ran like a charm and then suddenly it would stop running and would not start back up for a few minutes to a few days. I have had everything tested and nothing is out. I have put it on one of those machines that test engines and that shows nothing. Someone told me that it could be a module that is suppose to be housed on the firewall or behind the glove compartment. Well, I took it to a shop and they could not find it and I had several people look at it and it still can't be found. Does anyone here have any idea what could be wrong with this car?

    Thank you very much

If you have an intermittent problem where your Ford Taurus won't start - no crank, no noise, absolutely nothing - then you may have the same problem I had.
My car came with a extra security system where you have to push a button on a remote before starting the car. This was installed at the dealership but it's a third party component. Only problem was that the system was flaky so it sometimes wouldn't let me start the car - it completely disabled ignition. After 5 year this annoying feature became an everyday problem, so I finally spent lots of time and money to get it out of my car. By now I'm living in another city so the local Ford dealer didn't know what was going on and, since it was an intermittent/random problem, my mechanic couldn't figure out what was going on. Finally I took it to an alarm specialist and they were able to find it after some guesswork.
Finally, the solution was to buy a $8 STARTER RELAY from the local auto parts store and replace the one that was inside the fuse box (next to the battery). The old non-FORD starter relay is black with no brand or markings of any kind, just like the remote control. So, I don't know what company makes this security system but basically the unknown black remote is supposed to activate the unknown starter relay.
Now that the problem is fixed, I don't need to worry about pushing an extra button to activate my car (like most new cars it has a regular alarm and a chip inside the key so this extra security system is redundant and useless) - and the car starts every time!
All it cost me was $70 for the diagnosis and over $2000 in repairs for other things my mechanic found while trying to diagnose the starting problem which we could not reproduce. Oh, and the $8 starter relay from the auto parts store which took me a minute to replace. However, you can save a lot of money and time if you just buy the part and replace it yourself before you take the car to the dealer or your neighborhood repair shop.

A few days ago I started my 96 Sable LS and it started beeping at me like a microwave when food is done. It beeps 4 or 5 times, pauses, & beeps again for a total of 5 sets of beeps. My car is running just fine and no indicator ligts are coming on. Why is this happening?

Lately, when it rains or is real damp out, the car doesn't start. Sounds like it gets no gas. If the next day is dry, it will then pop off. Once it starts it runs fine. Temp or snow doesn't matter...pops off in 0 degrees or if there is a light snow. But rain, sleet etc it just cranks with nothing.
  • christy10christy10 Member Posts: 19
when the temp outside is above 70 the car shuts off like runing out of gas by then wait 30 mins and starts up, doesn't do this in winter only in summer hot or spring hot, i some times have to keep them gas cap off to keep it from shutting off, but then that wouldn't work.. Could this be fuel pump, or something else that has to do with weather being HOT... Please help im having a baby and i need a car... thank you

2000 Taurus 3.0 automatic.... will run perfect one time. and yet in another attempt, will idle at 1500 rpms then die as soon as I put in drive. Have replaced the air mass sensor...with no better results. Got stranded several times.

We had a 93 that did the same thing. It is the fuel pump. It breaks down under heat. We use to get so mad at it. My husband just keep working on it till it stopped doing that. Have a nice day.

I have 2001 SEL. How much should alternator replacement cost. It is the 24V DOHC engine and it is buried down there. I am interested in the labor cost as I see the part is about $130 rebuilt. Can't do it ourselves!
  • jasmith52jasmith52 Member Posts: 462
    whitall:

The labor for replacing the alternator in your car suggests that they have to take off some other parts to get to the alternator. It's just more work. Call around maybe you can get a better rate.

Regarding alternators sold in the aftermarket. In many ways you get what you pay for. I have a car of which I replaced the original alternator on. I bought an aftermarket replacement alternator at Pep Boys several years ago and installed it myself. The replacement alternators only seem to last a year or so. So I take it out of the car, drag the broken alternator down to Pep Boys and they bench-test it to show that it has gone bad, and then they give me another one. Well I am now on the fourth replacement alternator, and I've only had this car for seven years.

If I were to do it all over again, I'd find somewhere that sold General Motors alternators or alternators rebuilt to original GM specs.

So the moral of this long story is... That the cheapest aftermarket alternator may not be the best.

In your case the labor alone justifies spending a little more to get a good replacement alternator.

also, for what it's worth I had a similar experience with another car and the power steering pump. After replacing it three times with cheap Pep-Boys pumps, I just went to the auto-parts junkyard and bought the (original equipment) power steering pump from a car that had been totaled from a rear-end collision. That junk-yard pump worked just fine as long as I owned that car.

My repair philosophy now is to only use "quality" replacement parts.
  • whitallwhitall Member Posts: 190
I was told by a friend not to use Pep BOys and some other brands. He said to get a NAPA. Thanks for reaffirming the advice I already got. It will help me to stand firm against my desire to go cheaper.

Today my car started doing the same thing. Intermittently the car will stall when placed into drive but idles smoothly in neutral. I had to start it 5 times just to get it into the garage. At more than idle speeds the car runs normally. Have you determined the cause of the problem yet?
  • jdkitchi1jdkitchi1 Member Posts: 1
My mother's car has an intermittent starting problem. If the car is left for more than a couple of hours (or even days) it starts up no problem, but if you stop the car and come out 15 minutes later it won't start. She said that her manual said to turn the key to the on position but do not start it-do that several times and then put the gas pedal to the floor- and then it starts for her. Any ideas as to what the problem is?
  • jessiesjessies Member Posts: 1
Hi,My friend and I had the same problem, car would run fine and then suddenly stall out like it was out of gas or flooded. I had to wait at least 15 minutes to restart car and then it would run fine for months before it would do this again. (Mostly hot days) My friend replaced the EGR valve and hers no longer does this, and I just had the selenoid on my EGR valved replaced and all is well. An EGR valve is an electronic gas regulator. $35.00 part/$65.00 labor.

I have a 2001 Mercury Sable that periodly decides to disengage the engine so that nothing works. No lights, the engine won't start, nothing. It seems as though the alarm system has engaged itself to shut everything down. It will not take a jump, or respond to a battery charger,so its not the battery. The dealership and another mechanic has looked at it, but can't find anything wrong. I've asked to have the alarm system taken out but was told it is an integrated system and it can't be done. I'm getting sick of getting stuck. If you let the car sit overnight it starts! Anyone have any suggestions?

I have had a problem starting my Taurus when cold. It cranks but does not catch right away. It will start after a couple of attempts. It did it for about a week then it began working properly. That was about a month ago and it has now started becoming difficult to start again. No problem when ebgine is warm. It is the flex-fuel 3.0 V6. Thanks.

After only 114000 miles my '99 Sable transmission was acting up. Took it to Ford and they ran diagnostics which indicated a part inside the tranny needed replacing. Putting a warrentied rebuilt from Ford was only $400 more than fixing the old one so I went that route. Since I got the car back, the car doesn't start periodically. It acts as though the battery is dead. the clock resets to 12:00 as if the battery was disconnected. Cables are tight. The car starts immediately with a jump and then works perfect for a couple of weeks give or take and then it happens again. This has ONLY been happening since I got the car back from Ford 6-8 weeks ago and it has happened 3-4 times. Could Ford have done something to have caused this when they replaced the tranmission? If not, what could be the issue?

ok here is my question. just replaced spark plugs ,wires, fuel filter, air filter. and cam drive. It was having problems like this, rpm would excelerate and then decrease then car would die. started up fine except for a few times. Now it is stalling out at stop signs red lights or when I am stopped somewhere. RPMs only decrease and ignition light will come on then go off. I just spent over $800.00 and Iam afraid of getting screwed with stuff that is not wrong. if you can help please leave a message as soon as possible. Thank you

This is a 03 Ford Taurus SES Vulcan, 75K miles

    Problems:

    1. Car wont start. Turn on the key and only hear 1 click, NO cranking. Knocked the starter with a rod, cannot knock start either.

    2. The doom light along with these 2 lights beneath door rearview mirrors wont turn off. Usually they will be off once the car is locked. Now, they just keep on.

    Facts and thoughts:

I am not sure if this is a dead starter or some other electrical problems.

First, the wife cannot start and successfully jumped it up, which sounded to me like a dead battery. But, the battery turns out to be as good as new. Then it comes to the starter.

But can this kind of thing really happen, a dying starter tries to start once or twice before final death?

If so, what about the lights that just do not turn off?

    Any info is much appreciated

I have a 97 Tarus GL with a 3.0 double overhead cam engine that has a starting problem. I can turn the ingition switch to start and the starter will engage and the car will not start untill a period of time has passed. This time period is temprature sensitive to ambiant air temprature. Above 70 degrees it only take a few seconds for the engine to start but at 35 degrees it takes several minutes, and the time varies with the temprature. Or I can turn the ignition switch to run and wait the same time and the check engine light will blink one time and the radiator fans will shut off. At that time I can turn the switch to start and the engine will start immedately. I have checked the fuel pump and it is good. The ignition will not fire or the injectors will not fire untill this time has expired. I changed the temprature sensor and the ECM, checked the crank position sensor, the cam shaft position sensor, and the transmission shift sensor.
Does anybody have any ideas as to what the problem is.

Hi and thank you in advance for any help you can give me. My daughters 87 automatic Taurus stalls when she has to take her foot off the gas when she has to put it in park or in gear. Today however the car wouldnt start at all and we noticed a odd noise coming from a place behind the air filter(there looked to be a hose there and it seemed fine) We tried spraying starter fluid and it still couldnt turn over. The fuel filter was just replaced in November and she has put few miles on it sinse. The car does try to turn over and makes the appropiate noise to but thats as far as it gets. Any suggestions are very welcome and once again thank you!!

I have seen lots of questions about a car stalling when slowing down or speeding up, but my taurus is stalling out when maintaining speed. It sort of stutters, trying to stall. Sometimes it succeeds, sometimes it keeps going. We changed the fuel filter and cleaned the injections. Does anyone know what the problem might be?

My 2000 Sable does the same thing. It not a fuel problem. Did you ever solve your problem with the tarus. Yes ford does suck big

replaced spark plugs and air filter(both ok) same problem, the answer was cleaning the throttle plate. its easy to remove, only 2 screws, it has 2 small air holes that were alitte gummed up,also cleaned hoses from valve cover to mafs, rpms now stay about 800 at lights

i have a 96 taurus 3.0 efi trying to find out what to do i was driving on the highway engine just quit running and would not staart back up when u tried to start it just turned over at a real fast speed towed it to a shop they did a compresion test on it said i had low comp in a few cylenders and that the timimng chain was bad i put a timing chain on it and now it still wont start sounds like it is tryin but just wont star up. any idea what it could be?
  • catatizedcatatized Member Posts: 2
Figured it out. It needed a new battery. Apparently the old battery was getting just tot he edge of dying and the car wouldn't start. Jump the battery and it the car would work perfectly for two weeks or so then do the same thing. It wasn't making any since. Finally I took the battery in and had it tested and replaced and havn't had problems since...that was about 4 months ago!

I am looking at buying a 92 sable. I was wondering if anyone would know why all the power buttons work but will not start. They say that it is a simple fix, like the relay switch but I wanted to get others opinions first. If anyone has any insite to this I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks for any help.

I have a 2003 V6 Taurus 54,000 miles with a starting problem. Maybe someone can give me some ideas? It has a brand new (3 weeks) battery, but it continues to give me trouble. It is at the dealership right now and they are puzzled. If it has been sitting overnight it starts up. I do notice that the start-up is not quite what it should be...just slightly slow. After being driven and parked, it does not want to start again. It sounds like the battery is dying, but it is not. After two tries where is just "clicks", one try where is fights to turn over, it finally turns over. After being left in the garage overnight, it starts okay in the morning.
Also, aren't there diagnostic machines that can check an alternator to see if it is working properly? How about other starting parts like starter, etc. Any diagnostic machines that can help?

I have changed the battery, and fixed a leak that was dripping onto the starter. The periodically will not start after driving and letting set from a half hour to a hour. When I turn on the key all lights on the dash light up and buzzer sounds because key is in ignition and door is open. Nothing happens. Sometimes if you leave it for a couple of hours or over night the car will start. We are afraid to drive any distance from the house in case it won't start and then you have to pay towing back. After a few times it gets expensive. Please advice what's next. I have called the dealer and they could run some test to find out what's happening. Is there anything I can do or check. Thanks

Hi. I purchased my 2007 taurus in Aug., 2007. Since then on 3 occasions while either driving for 30 minutes or 3 hours my car has stalled while turning either left or right with no issues or check engine lights to warn me that something is wrong. As of today, the ford dealership has my car and has called me to tell me "they can't duplicate the problem". If anyone has any suggestions, I would appreciate the advice. Thank you. :confuse:

I have a 2003 Ford Taurus SES. I purchased it in January and it has recently been stalling when I stop. I hear a whining noise and then the theft light starts blinking, then the speedometer goes hay wire, then it stalls. Sometimes it just stalls when I stop without those indications. It also almost stalls while driving at highway speeds, only sometimes though, when I brake, use cruise control, or signal but it doesn't completely die, and resets the radio from on to off. It's like a power outage for 2 seconds then everything comes back online. The odd thing is that these things only happen once in awhile, but they are occurring more frequent lately. I have read that many people have had this problem but no one has been able to isolate the problem. Has anyone found out what the problem really is? Thanks for your help in advance.

I GOT AN OLDER FRIEND WITH A INTERMITTING PROBLEM WITH A 1994 SABLE WITH 120K ON IT THAT IS BAFFELING ME. WHEN YOU TURN THE KEY TO ON AND GET THE NORMAL 2-3 SECOND PRIME FROM THE FUEL PUMP EVERYTHING CRANKS AND RUNS FINE. HOWEVER SOMETIMES WHEN THE KEY IS TURNED TO ON THE PUMP WILL CONTINUE TO RUN AND WHEN CRANKED WILL NOT START.
HAVE REPLACED THE INLINE FILTER AND THE FUEL PUMP IN THE TANK AND RAN GOOD FOR ONE DAY AND NOW BACK TO THE PUMP KEEPS RUNNING AND CANT GET IT TO START BUT CRANKS JUST FINE. HERES A FEW CLUES ALSO GETTING A FLICKERING AIR BAG LIGHT DON'T KNOW IF THERE IS ANY RELATION(OR WHEN THIS LIGHT STARTED DOING THAT) BUT UNTILL NOW IF YOU CYCLED THE KEY SWITCH IT WOULD CATCH, HOWEVER NOW IT WONT, STILL CRANKS GREAT BUT WILL NOT START? HAVE NOT CHECKED FOR FUEL PRESSURE OR INJECTORS FOR FIRE BUT SUSPECTING EITHER THE CAM SENSOR OR THE KEY SWITCH OR POSSIBLE HARNESS ISSUES, ANYBODY GOT ANY INSIGHT ON THIS BEFORE I go nuts??? Thanks
