we purchased this vehicle brand spanking new! as of nov of last year we have had nothing but problems with it. its been in the shop anout 5 times in a period of 8 months all for different things.. barrings on my engine went out which left my fiancé stranded on the side of the road, thank god my kids weren't in there. after 3 weeks of being at the dealership, they replaced it. I drove to put gas, and got stranded again, with my kids in my car, they picked me up, said the battery went dead and there was a leak in the ac pump, a few days after that they returned the car, I still had a cranking issue with it that I was told, a GM service manager would contact me in January of 2013, never heard from them. it has a delay when you start it. at 40k miles the power steering pump went out, and I had a leak in my ac, which to their convienece was out of the 36k warranty. so I had to pay out of pocket on these repairs. 2 weeks after it was fixed my evaporator core went out and needed to b replaced and again out of warranty, I had to pay out of pocket.
Now my floor in my passenger and my driver area is soaked with water. I don't have a sunroof. so its in the shop as of yesterday, also while driving in town and on freeways, there is a jerk when it supposed to shift to the next gear. This car was definitely a bad buy, I would not recommend anyone to purchase an acadia. I used to love my car now its a nightmare, and its paid off for. GM always tells me our hands are tied cus its out of warranty...so I guess they aren't a durable brand as they state. Very disappointed in this style car. its our worst nightmare!!!!!

Hun, it's called a lemon. Cars are mass produced today, and GMC is no exception. When cars are produced at such a high volume as they are, there's bound to be a few bad ones out there. This is many more than the average amount of problems(for the 2010 model year and newer), I would say you, unfortunately, received one of them.
  • melynlosmelynlos Member Posts: 3
@lovegmc1.. I have to agree with you. I have been thinking this for a while now. It's too new to b having so many problems. I'm tired of dealing with it. This is day 2 of the supposedly "diagnostic" and I haven't received a call or an update. This is the only car that we have and all they could do for me was give me a ride back home.. Their service is really bad, it shouldn't take 2 days in my opinion. And this happens to me everytime I take it in. I have to at least leave it for 2-3 days until they tell me what's wrong with it.. I'm am truly disappointed in GM.

Is there any other GM dealership nearby?(it doesn't have to be just GMC, any Chevrolet or Buick dealer would look at it for you and repair it.) It shouldn't be taking this long to diagnose this issue. They should have bought back your car from you and put you in a new,problem-free one WAY before anything got to this point.. There are some intermittent AC issues, not too many like transmission or power steering, so that isnt TOTALLY a surprise..two of them? its a Little much. the power steering problem is more of a prevalent issue. All these issues you have been having all together are NOT normal for this model! I say it's more of a shame on the dealer, they need so step up to the plate. Sometimes dealers try to find cheap solutions to easy problems, making a mountain out of a molehill, and also, unfortunately, deterring potential repeat-buyers. I am sorry you have to deal with an unreliable car, and the service that you are receiving at your dealership is(much)worse than it should be. I hope this issue can be resolved.

EDIT: Another option you can try is going through GM directly, they might be able to get you results you need and deserve. Results have been varying... But it's worth a shot.

Well clearly, brooklyngirl was wrong. Hope the Acadia stays problem-free for you! Hope that extended warranty isn't needed! Good luck and safe driving to you also!

Taking my Acadia to the dealer tomorrow morning. Trans went out with no warning last evening. I still have drive and low, slipping but there, but reverse is completely gone. There was no warning it just faild at road speed. Looking at this forum I see that I'm not alone and expect a bad experience with the dealer. Vehicle is 6 yrs old with 59K miles. GM service has always sucked in their treatment of customers, and I'm a retired employee saying that. I'll know more tomorrow.

Had the same problems with steering. It's seems ok now that they put new power steering pump on
  • 6wheeldiesel6wheeldiesel Member Posts: 4
I fixed ours too. Biggest pain in the rear I've ever dealt with regarding a power steering pump! Took me 9 hours to swap over the course of two days. However, only cost me $140 for the pump. Guess I saved about 750 from what the dealer was going to charge. Not including the $135 diagnostic fee... If anyone wants advice feel free to contact me here and I'll explain the details.
  • melynlosmelynlos Member Posts: 3
We did the same too.. Had to change it ourselves.. But now it makes a humming sound. Took it in and they told me its not going away, they coulda le it less noisy by bleeding it out but it's always gonna make that sound. I've opened a case with Gm corporate and well lets say they r taking forever to get back to me on my case.. Unacceptable if u ask me.. I will definitely think twice before in purchase another Gm vehicle.. Not satisfied with anything they do!

Just sold my '08 Acadia last week to CarMax. After 3 transmission replacements, numerous water leaks, multiple steering issues, and the worst overall experience of my life, I can finally say goodbye to the most unreliable vehicle built in the new millennium.

Surprisingly, I got a lot more $$ than I expected. Good luck to you all. I am signing off for good and I will never visit GM again.

We have a severe problem with our 2011 GMC Acadia SLT's HVAC system - it no longer works. It blows air, but also allows Freon to escape into the cabin of the car whenever you open the vents. That said, there was a burning smell about a month ago and then the air conditioner quit - in the middle of summer. No it appears the heat no longer works either. The concerning part is that there are literally dozens of complaints regarding the same thing online, but GMC has not recalled it and plays dumb when you call to discuss whether they are aware of an issue with the HVAC system, when clearly the hundreds of documented cases online proves there is an issue. Back to our car. The concerning part is that the Freon is entering the car cabin, causing people to become dizzy or causing a headache. That said, we are forced to boil in our car since we can't even open the vents! The car is just 2 years old with less that 40,000 miles and it already has a major issue - this is a problem and we flat out refuse to pay and fix something out of pocket when GMC knows there is a problem that has existed since 2008, at least.
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
If your ac no longer cools the car, you can be assured there is no freon entering your vehicle. Your vehicle has already released all the R134a into the atmosphere thus adding to global warming.

    Hi,
I have a 2011 Acadia SLT2 and in the last month or so, the steering column has been making a strange whining sound when driving below 10 MPH. I noticed this before my 36K warranty was up but it was not loud enough/reproducible all the time like it is now.

I currently have just over 38000 miles on the vehicle - could I take it in to get fixed by my GMC/dealer? From other article posts, I believe this is a common problem with '08 and newer (except maybe 2012 models) with the type of the steering fluid used in this vehicles (factory-installed fluid).

    See here:
    http://www.acadiaforum.net/index.php?topic=12781.0

    and here:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fhYilyQltkI

    and here:

Apparently there is a TSB for this:
    http://www.gmcproblems.com/tsbs/Acadia/2010/
    TSB ID 10036513

Any other recommendations to get this fixed?

    Thanks.

    TECHNICAL
    Bulletin No.: 10-02-32-002A
    Date: December 20, 2010
Subject: Whine or Moan Type Noise from Power Steering System During Low Speed Maneuvers (Perform Repair as Outlined Below)
    Models:
    2008-2011 Buick Enclave
    2009-2011 Chevrolet Traverse
    2007-2011 GMC Acadia
    2007-2010 Saturn OUTLOOK
Built Prior to August 01, 2010
    Attention:
This bulletin also applies to any of the above models that may be export vehicles.
    Supercede:
This bulletin is being revised to add 2011 model year and provide a build date. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 10-02-32-002 (Section 02 - Steering).
    Condition
Some customers may comment on a whine or moan type noise from the power steering system during low speed maneuvers.
    Cause
This condition may be caused by either low or contaminated fluid or there may be air in the system.
    Correction
    1. Inspect the power steering fluid for proper level, contamination or signs of air in the system.
    - If the fluid is low, fill and re-evaluate the vehicle.
    - If the fluid appears contaminated, flush the system (refer to the procedure in SI) and thoroughly bleed the system using the revised procedure listed below. Re-evaluate the vehicle.
    - If there is air in the system, thoroughly bleed the system using the revised procedure listed below and re-evaluate the vehicle.
    2. If after re-evaluation the noise is not corrected or if the inspection does not identify the root cause, replace the power steering pump with new P/N 20954812. This new pump is a 12 vane pump. Vehicles built after August 01, 2010, already have the new pump.
    Power Steering System Bleed Procedure
    1. Apply the park brake.
    2. Using a floor jack and jack stands, raise the front of the vehicle until the center of the front wheels are approximately 61 cm (24 in) off the ground.
    3. Fill the power steering fluid reservoir with fluid to the bottom of the filler neck. Leave the cap off. Place towels around the reservoir as fluid will flow out from the reservoir onto the engine.
    4. With the key in the ON position and with the engine OFF, turn the steering wheel from stop to stop until the fluid level maintains a consistent level and air bubbles becomes fewer within the reservoir (fluid will rise and fall while the steering wheel is turned. Trapped air will allow the fluid to fall. Maintain fluid level at all times). It may take several minutes to complete this process.
    5. Ensure that the fluid level is at the bottom of the filler neck.
    6. Connect the CH-43485 adapter to the GE-23738-A pump.
    7. Hold the CH-43485 adapter on the top of the reservoir filler neck.
    8. Apply a vacuum of 68 kPa (20 in Hg, 10 psi).
    9. Set the GE-23738-A pump down. The vacuum will hold the CH-43485 adapter in place.
    Note
The vacuum gauge needle will fluctuate while the steering wheel is moving.
    10. Maintain a vacuum of 68 kPa (20 in Hg, 10 psi) while turning the steering wheel from stop to stop. Hold the steering wheel at each steering stop until air bubbles become fewer within the clear hose. Maintain fluid level at all times. It may take several minutes to complete this process.
    11. With the steering wheel in the straight position, maintain a vacuum of 68 kPa (20 in Hg, 10 psi) for 5 minutes.
    12. Inspect the condition of the fluid in the clear hose on the CH-43485 adapter. If any bubbles are in the fluid, repeat steps 10 and 11.
    13. Lower the vehicle.
    14. Relieve the vacuum in the GE-23738-A pump.
    15. Remove the CH-43485 adapter from the reservoir filler neck.
    16. Ensure that the power steering fluid level is at the MAX mark on the capstick fluid level indicator.
    17. With the reservoir cap off, start the engine. Slowly rotate the steering wheel from stop to stop 10 times. Hold the steering wheel at each stop for 2 seconds.
    18. Verify that the steering system does not shudder while turning the steering wheel. If the steering system exhibits a shudder condition, repeat steps 1 through 17.
    19. Turn the engine OFF.
    20. Ensure the power steering fluid level is at the MAX mark on the capstick fluid level indicator. Install the cap to the reservoir.
    21. Test drive the vehicle.

I couldn't find the TSB that's referred to in your post. One thing you need to consider is that GM is under no obligation to fix this problem unless you can prove that it happened during your warranty period but never successfully repaired. The other option would be a goodwill gesture on the part of GM to fix it under warranty or to share the cost of the repair.

TSB is generally provided by the manufacturer to aid the dealership in repairs. A TSB is not covered once the warranty period expires only recalls fall into that category.

    Good luck.

Ok - thank you for this information - too bad the last resort is a complete steering pump replacement. I spoke with my dealer and since I had reported the issue while it was under warranty (documented that I requested they look at it), my service rep. said this, "would work in my favor" though likely as you said, I would have to pay something similar to a deductible if I had an extended warranty on the vehicle.

I reported this issue over a year ago and the dealer didn't fix it then either because they couldn't reproduce the whining or didn't try hard enough. I am leaning towards the latter as another issue that was fixed under warranty (leaking fuel pump) had to be diagnosed on 2 different occasions one of which required towing the vehicle.

Will update once I get the vehicle in this week for final diagnosis and see how "well" GMC treats me.

I have an announcement.... Sunday was a glorious day for our family. We found a brand new vehicle for sale with just enough incentive to buy us out of the worst vehicle we have ever owned! I wish you all luck in dealing with your Acadia. We , unfortunately, will never own another GM product from this point forward.

I have now lost all confidence in GMC's ability to build a reliable product. Several years ago, my 2003 GMC's four wheel drive went out with 21,000 miles on it. At this point, I should have learned. But we gave them another shot with a 2010 Acadia. On the Acadia, the timing belt went out with 24,000 miles. At 50,000 miles, a hose in the AC system needed replaced, along with two oxygen sensors. After $1,000 in repairs, the AC still doesn't work, and from reading this forum, its a very popular problem. One side of the dual climate control works fine, but the other constantly blows hot air regardless of the setting.

I like to buy American but I'm so tired of taking this car into the shop. Its not only a waste of money, but a huge inconvenience. I'll spend a few hours trading this piece of junk in on something more reliable and be happy to get rid of it. Its really a shame because the Acadia has some great features, and a great layout, but it does no good when its in the repair shop. Don't let the features fool you - you will be sorry if you buy this car.

  • jb0928jb0928 Member Posts: 3
Good news (so far). Had our Acadia (2011) in at the dealer this week and agreed to repair the issue. They identified the cause of the squeaking as a bad PS steering cover and charged me $100. Cost was what I would pay if I had an extended warranty deductible.

So far so good...no more squeaking noise turning at low speed.

We have about 56k miles on our 2010 GMC Acadia and it just had to have the driveline repaired/replaced. Most of it was under warranty, but now we just had the apparently all too common "whining sound" reported in reference to the steering column assembly.

The dealer said we needed a new power steering problem due to a leak, and that we would also need a new rack/gear.

We have had a 'clunk' in the steering column in the past, but like a lot of these things, they don't make the noise when the shop looks at it...now there is a whining noise when turning at low speeds, as is also commonly reported.

If GM has a technical service bulletin, and there are still so many reports about it I am furious that the warranty has no bearing on this type of well known issue, or that a recall has not been done, especially considering the cost to a consumer. I was quoted $1325 to repair the items, and re-align the car afterward. The labor is quoted at 5 hours to disassemble the entire front end and reassemble and align it. I took it out of the dealer and told him I was going to sell it before I dumped that much money into it. I am having an independent mechanic look at it, but at less than 60k miles it is suddenly looking like the worst mistake we ever made with a vehicle!
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
A leaking rack is not unusual for the 2010 Acadia. I was fortunate that I found the leak a couple of weeks before my 3/36 ran out. Water pump failure was the reason it was in the dealer for repair when they discovered the leaking rack and leaking CV boot. I thought it rather unusual for the failures since we have only 21K miles on the vehicle. The only item covered under recall is the water pump.

I was looking at the Mazda CX9 and after reading their problems forum wasn't exactly excited about getting one of those either.

We have the EXACT same problem right now! Our Acadia started blowing hot air. We took it into the dealer we purchased from 2 years ago, and they tell us that we have a leaking air compressor and 3 leaking hoses?!?! Grand total of $2300 worth of repairs. Meanwhile, I have also had an 05 Suburban for almost 9 years, and have never had to do a single thing to the AC. The dealer is giving me the runaround on the this issue. GM needs to step up and take some accountability here.

I bought this SUV June 2012. Im here at KSA, mileage now is 37,000 kms it is in a 3yrs warranty or 100kms
this July 2013 Airconditioning problem, not cooling.
they fix it for free, but I rent a car for 3days and cost me 330 SR .
now I'm hearing a knocking sound, squeeking sound in the front suspension and steering system. I'ts like I'm having a 2nd hand car with the noise.
I'm afraid to bring it again because I will rent a car again 3-maybe more days to fix that. although its free of charge but the inconvenience it brings me.
that's why I bought a bnew car because i don't want to bug me of that repairs.
hopefully if they can provide me a car for free.
GMC service center, they dont even offer a car to use here....

We made the mistake of buying the 2007 Acadia ( first year model). While I really do love the car when it doesn't have problems..... it seems to always have issues. Luckily many were under the warranty but now that warranty is up.... but they keep coming.
    Issues:
    1. Water leaked from sun roof- 4 times in to have it fixed. Warranty covered
    2. Did not shift well between 40-50mph. Warranty covered. Computer reprogram?
    3. Transmission went out. Not only did it go out but did it the day after all the tornado's here in Alabama. Talk about stressful. Dealership wasn't open due to lack of power. Warranty
    4. Timing Chain. Warranty
    5. Heated windshield fluid removed due to fires....wow...warranty to remove
    6. Lift Gate broke- not warranty
    7. Power steering out - not warranty
    8. Air Conditioner out- not warranty
    9. Wheel hub bearing- not warranty
    10. Now I am being told I need heads fixed....$3000 atleast
I know there are other issues but I can't quite remember right now.
I do have 128,000 miles on it but it should not have this many problems. My father in law is retired GM employee so we have tried to be loyal to GM. When will GM do what's right by us?. This car was poorly built/designed and they should be ashamed. I called and asked them to provide a low cost extended warranty program to me up to 200,000 . I thought this was fair given the lemon they stuck me with.... no luck. Is there any other options available? I really don't want to have to buy another car right now but I am so scared to put another $3000 or more in it when this year I have already spent $2000. Any experience with this latest issue of the head problem. What else is routinely going wrong? I would really like realist advise if I should fix or walk away...... to a NON GM brand vehicle !

Please let me know I am aboard.

I bought a 2008 GMC Acadia SLT used with 30,000 on it in 2011.
    Since then:

My transmission has gone out on it three times.
The timing chain …i think that's what its called-went out.
The clutch has been replaced once.
Head lamps went out and were recalled.
Valve of some sort had to be replaced.
    Engine Case replaced.
    Low front panel fell off.
The left driver's side door panel fell off.
My car has literally been in the dealer more than my garage. Until yesterday every thing has been covered under warranty and extended warranty.

And recently the car would not shut off (the engine would keep running when the key was taken out of the ignition.) Apparently, the drain ducts were clogged and got the front floor board wet and water leaked into the fused box and short circuited the circuit board for the car. Due to it being a water leak the extended warranty will not cover it.

GM is willing to help cover part of the cost which I know I should be so thankful for but I honestly feel after all the problems I've had it should all be covered. I could clean the water ducts out my self to prevent. It's not part of my service when I have it service. It seems so incredibly unfair.

Our car is a GMC Acadia 2008 All-Wheel Drive V6
    Problems brief as possible.
We purchased the car in the spring of 2008.
    1. Lift gate gas cylinders failed in 2010, violently hitting wife in head.
    2. Gas mileage claimed was overstated and typical average is and was 15 to 17.8 mpg. Our 1997 V8 Explorer AWD averaged about the same.
    3. Rack and pinion was replaced under warranty before 30,000 miles late 2010.
    4. Finish on climate control chipped off and entire unit was replaced under warranty in 2010.
    5. Transmission started showing signs of slipping in 2011 but was very rare and could not be traced by mechanic.
    6. Unusual occasional shutter in front steering was appearing in fall 2013.
    7. The driver’s seat in about 2012 started showing signs of wear. It became loose in its mechanical adjustment hardware and began progressively getting worse and moving during acceleration and deceleration.
    8. Transmission slipped several times during return trip from Hershey Park to Maryland. Complete transmission failure occurred at 11 pm on 15 south in Pennsylvania with 72,224 miles on odometer. Vehicle engine light came on and engine RPM jumped to 6000 with no drag from transmission to slow down the engine. Engine was freewheeling and unable to provide power through the transmission enough to move the car even one inch. GMC OnStar claims transmission is under warranty and the vehicle was towed to dealership and left at service through drop box.
The biggest problem with the complete transmission failure was being stranded on a dark highway with seven occupants and most of them being young children. Their lives were placed in danger. The next day I had planned to attend an NFL game and was unable to and I lost the value of the tickets of $335 dollars.
OnStar did their job of getting a tow truck and booking a hotel room for us. However, were left on our own to find a rental car to transport seven occupants 100 miles home. We hired a taxi for an 18 mile trip to the Harrisburg airport to pick up a Ford Explorer which seats seven. The Explorer averaged 25 mpg for the 100 mile trip home.

The paint on our Acadia looks good, the tires are new, the brakes have plenty of pads left, all the lights work, and the leather interior is very comfortable. Although it is 5 years old, it could pass for a newer vehicle. Apparently this Acadia was not built to last mechanically. No wonder GM is going bankrupt.

PS: I regret posting this because it could hurt my resell value.

I have a 2010 GMC Acadia (bought new 4/10) and have already had some repairs and am having additional issues that I fear may mirror the posts:

@ 43211 miles: leaking throttle body duct, unexplained engine noise that they "decarbonned/cleaned" for a total of $372. I was told they had no idea and said "let's try this".

@ 44289 miles: high side line from a/c compressor leaking and needing freon for $913, engine front mount replacement for warranty

@ 52682 miles engine light code P0496 needing a new purge solenoid (and topped off coolant in a recall) for $243

Among all of the above... I have a leak we can't pinpoint that leaves water in the passenger side 2nd row well that makes my car smell if not cleaned out regularly and a testy 2nd row side seatbelt ("fixed but not fixed at the dealership).

However at 61441 miles I have a rack and pinion leak and am told that I need to replace the steering gear. And I will also complete the routine maintenance recommended- shocks and brake pads but the leak concerns me.

Wondering if these are "normal" as I have not experienced this amount of problem with any car, especially a new one. Thoughts?

Forgot to tell you that we also are not pleased with how the letters,etc..., are wearing away and becoming illegible on our control panel as well, unacceptable.

This happening in my car as well. Silver trim also reflects in your eyes on any sunny day in Texas. The plastic sunroof clip keeps slipping (despite replacement at dealership) flying the screen open. Minor compared to the steering issue. But disappointing for a $46,000 car.

I have a 2008 Acadia. I started having trouble with my transmission with almost 75,000 miles on my car. I took it into the dealer for its 75,000 mile inspection. I told them when it shifted into 3rd gear it was really rough. Sometimes there was such a kick that it scared me! I love my car but this was unacceptable. They said they would check it out. When I got my car back they said everything checked out fine. About a month later my warranty expired and so did my transmission. It's almost like they knew they shouldn't give me an extended warranty or it would cost them. I can't even remember the last time that I wasn't offered an extended warranty. I'm very disappointed!

I have a 2008 Acadia and am thoroughly disgusted and fed up with this piece of junk! I have had numerous recalls that I addressed immediately. My car leaks after bad rain even though I took it in for a leaking issue recall, air bag sensor light has never been fixed, had battery issues, and now I took it in for another air bag recall issue which they said they can't fix until they 1) replace my transmission due to a wave plate issue which I have to pay for 4,500. 2) Master cylinder & brake booster issue $700. 3) rack and pinion issue $1,800. My car has 39,000 miles on it and they want me to fork over 7 - 8,000$ out of pocket for defective parts that so many others have had with this same make/model??? THIS IS AN OUTRAGE! I filed a claim last Friday and someone was supposed to contact me by yesterday and big surprise I HAVE HEARD FROM NO ONE!!! I took it to another mechanic in the meantime and was told that this car is a LEMON and GMC should be recalling it, No ones transmission should be going out at 39,000 miles!!! He said that there are MANY bulletins out there for all of these issues and the dealer should be fixing them at their cost! With all the other recalls out there I would think GMC would be seriously looking at all of these major/safety issues and fixing them on their dime!!!

Bought my 07 Acadia in 2011, it broke down the first night. That should have been my sign but I was in love with the look and feel of this vehicle. It has been nothing but trouble since and after reading a lot of reviews I am considering going to an attorney. I have had my vehicle serviced and maintained properly through a very reliable dealership. My Acadia has less than 109,000 thousand miles on it and today I am taking it to the dealership for a 3rd major transmission issue. Needless to say when I take it this time for repair it will no longer be under warranty! Major steering issues, the car cut off and wouldn't turn while turning into a parking lot a common slow speed! The stabilitrak is an off and on problem since purchase. The suspension broke, the DVD doesn't have sound of the people talking just the background music half of the time. The front passenger vehicle window won't roll down from the drivers controls. The transmission sticks and will not change gears appropriately. The gas cap broke at less than 80,000. The list goes on and on! I definitely have an "I LOVE YOU I HATE YOU" relationship with this car! When I think about trading it I am scared that I won't get enough for it considering the repair history it has! Don't buy this model, you will regret it!
