@andys120, yep, fun youtube.com although more sliding in the dirt would have been even more fun - Desert Showdown: 2011 Nissan Juke vs. 1971 Datsun 510.

    Weird but cool>

It's a race car but it shouldn't be hard to figure what it's based on. The guy at the wheel is Max Hoffman who practically created the Euro Auto business in the US. How 'bout those wheels? They are apparently actual 1950s racing wheels.

It is Porsche 356 based. The wheels seem to predate that Porsche style which was still hanging around for the early 911s, drilling circular holes in a dished pressed steel wheel. However, they look more cartoon spaceship than anything else

The marking around the cockpit seems to suggest a removed front screen and side curtains, rather than actual windows

Anyone able to give a more accurate idea

    G'day

Yes a Mini Moke with a slightly odd history, driven 30,000km from London to Sydney in a Marathon across, Europe, Asia and Australia. It ultimately ran 35th in a highly competitive event which had more than its share of bizarre event.

More "Wacky Races" than motor race, there were several candidates for the role of Dick Dastardly - but sadly, no Muttley!

By the time that it reached Perth it was seven days late so the organizer decreed that the Australian leg would be run as a seven day continuous drive, rather than the fourteen days expected. The last finisher turned up about nine weeks late.

Did that Marathon start here from Covent Garden some time in about 1983 -6? I went to the start of that - I remember one car went down the road three hundred yards and got lost - they came back about ten minutes later. There were some really unusual cars in that event - especially from our perspective, as quite a few were models not made here....

The London Sydney Marathon was in 1977, following an earlier one in 1968. I think there have been later ones in 1993 and more recently but these have been unable to go through Iraq.

The route went from Covent Garden Opera House to Sydney Opera House, so the start point is right; you are just older than you thought!

Come to think of it I was at college when I went so it was 1977 - I remember the one in the sixties that the Hillman Hunter won (I saw the car at the subsequent Motor SHow in London) but was a kid in Wales then.

The weird Porsche-looking car I posted before (here it is again) is a 1952 Glockler-Porsche>

This was the creation of a German VW dealer who was one of the first to race Porsches. Unlike the later Porsche 550 which it resembles, the Glocker cars used the standard rea-engine placement.

Yep, that's an early ('92) Volkswagen Corrado. This particular car has been customized with an Audi, TT Turbo drivetrain, hence the Audi wheels. That looks like the VR6 body, introduced in 1992.

Sure looks like it but the still is from Cloud Atlas and I don't see side marker lights on the 'Stang, so perhaps it's a '67.

Here's Bullitt's 390 GT, notice the prominent marker panel at rear>

Doh. I guess that makes sense, as the Buick turning the corner looks like a 69-70 Electra, maybe. And a same years Coupe deVille parked. Chevy truck maybe a 59 or so.

My wife really liked that movie but she doesn't recall a Mustang being in it. :D I missed the movie but enjoyed the book a lot. (And a space was left after the s in Atlas before the underscore, so the coding failed. And there's a space before the C in the example I didn't edit).

In 1967, Sweden finally moved to driving on the right instead of the left (cars were LHD, weirdly). Here's a before and after shot:

In the second picture, follow the dotted line to just past the Volvo. I wasn't sure if it was a Buick or a Cadillac.

There's a Triumph TR-4 on the left next to the truck and over to the middle near the front, what appears to be a Checker Marathon , probably a taxi

Well a new drivetrain on a Corrado was a good move--not financially but in terms of actually getting driving time to exceed shop time.

Apparently Mopars were big in Sweden back in the day, might explain their taste for old American iron today. The Checker is an unexpected sight too.

There's a fintail taxi in front of the Checker.

I thought those early Toyota's were kind of ugly when they came out, but these days I think they are kind of neat looking. Maybe they remind me of some of the old amusement park rides when I was a kid.

Yup, it's a **1969 Toyota Corona ** hardtop coupe. Not many coupes were sold here, I'd forgotten that they were hardtops. The Corona was the car that put Toyota on the map in the US, although IIRC they were outsold by the Datsun 510. Most likely those wheels are not real Minilites, which were/are quite expensive. They're probably Panasports, look-alikes, quite popular back in the day.

Moderator, can't we get these helpers to work reliably?

I always wanted a 2 door 510 with those wheels. Wanted to turn it into a Millen tribute. Probably rare as hens teeth at this point finding one that has not been all screwed with. I had a model of that I put together as a kid. That and a Chevy Luv with a V8 engine. Yeah, I had strange taste.

@andys120, looks like you're still getting a space between the code and the word you're trying to highlight. Hm, looks like if you double-click the word you want to highlight, you'll often wind up with a trailing space (in Windows anyway). When you select the word(s) you have to eliminate the leading or trailing space, either as you select the word or edit it afterward.
