I grew up near a Pittsburgh steel mill famous for Stainless Steel. They did 2 or 3 cars in SS as the last strikes on factory dies (stainless will dull a die real fast).

These are NOT my cars, but I saw them at a local show. Shelby, Roush and Saleen rarely pictured together and all owned by a NC car dealer.

Speaking of strikes... that is certainly a striking car! Wow. I think SS will dull dies and eyes equally fast! :p

Nice MGA, when I was a kid I found a slightly bent grille like that at a yard sale. No distinct memory what happened to it, probably was sold at a later yard sale.

A resto-mod Pinto wagon is cool too xwesx - make it a real sleeper and leave/restore the wood paneling.

Maybe! I'm not sure what it is made out of. Seems like some sort of vinyl graphic that has an aluminum frame around it. It's cracked all to heck, though, and I suspect will be a real mess to remove. If I wanted to go crazy, I could probably replace it with a thin wood veneer. Hahah; talk about a labor of love! B)

brian - first car is a 66 Ford Galaxie. Mine had a 390, which probably gave 10% more performance than a 289 while using 80% more fuel.

Your 66 Ford is sharp. Very nice car especially with the 390 motor.. What a flash back. My brother had a 67, Ford, Mustang Shelby GT500. You wanna talk about a chick magnet car. If my brother still has any pictures of his Shelby or the girls he had in there I will post them.

With fake woodies being restored these days, I bet there's a suitable covering being remade now. Maybe some kind of contact paper with a clear protective coating?

That pic isn't my exact car, but a clone - same color combination (I think the pictured car engine badge looks like "289"), and I kept it pretty clean. It was a neat car for a high schooler, so thirsty it kept me from screwing around much, maybe a little too fast and loud. I don't miss carburetors though.

My dad had a 70 Mustang, but that was when I was really little, and I don't remember it much. Several other old Fords throughout the years, he was definitely a Ford guy.

That MGA cost $200. I was working at McDonalds, saved up and bought it during a lunch break. All the while still wearing my mustard stained apron at the parents house of the guy I bought it from. Insurance, license, I'll take care of that tomorrow. Right now I have mt first car. Looked out the McDonalds window at it until my shift ended. Next day did the paperwork and it was all mine. WooHoo. Oh what fun it was to be 17.

I don't know why we're sweating downsizing from a minivan. Should just get an Impala and spread out. This is our '82 Tercel in the mid-80s (note the chaise lounge stashed in the canoe):

Does she still have that? With a stick-shift, the Protege ES is a fantastic little car. 16" alloys and a moonroof, IIRC.

Datsun 710 I think, those are really rare today. And for a reason - yours was probably showing age already, and it was only several years old.

My grandpa had a Tercel like that when I was a little kid, as a company car. I remember it, a "Corolla Tercel".

For old pics, here's one I dug up. I am pretty sure the blue car is my dad's 1970 Mustang. That's me in the period correct attire, I guess I was about 2. He sold the car when I was 4, it was replaced with a Horizon. I have only a vague memory of the car.

    image

And here he is with the Horizon, which he loved. One would think going from a cool Mustang to a Horizon wouldn't be fun, but he liked that car, and drove it a lot. Here it is receiving its semi-annual wash:

    image

My parents werent very sentimental about cars, and I can't find pics of many of them. I think I have one of the T-Bird somewhere, but cars like Tempo and Taurus don't seem to exist in photos, not to mention cars they had before my time.

@kyfdx@Edmunds‌ - No we don't still have it. We sold it back in 2007 soon after we got the X3. Hers was an automatic. Yes it was the ES with the sunroof and upgraded 1.8L engine (I think the others had a 1.6). It was starting to give us trouble with close to 90K on the clock, plus we had the baby (now 7 1/2) and the car had no LATCH anchors or enough room to qualify as our family hauler. Besides, you know how it is with your 1st kid, you pack 3 days worth of stuff just to go to someone's house for dinner:)

@fintail yeah, we got the wagon from a school teacher and managed to get about a year out of it. My wife's boss brought it and rebuilt it, but I don't think he got much more use out of it either.

The Horizon might have been more fun to drive than the Mustang eh?

Same problem with pics here, I'm missing pics of the '49 Ford, Galaxie Custom, Falcon, Valiant, GMC pickup, 80-something Protege, Impala, '59 Bel Air, and a few Buick wagons that my folks drove.

@nippononly, don't know what we set it at (the default varies from 4 to 50mb depending on where you look).

@nyccarguy, pdf files are okay to upload but it looks like your Beretta is attached as a file and not showing up "embedded" in the post as a photo (typically a .jpg).

  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 57,092

That's exactly it, the Horizon was fun because you had to work at it to go fast, and according to my dad, it handled well for a malaise economy car. He also claimed it was the best snow car he ever owned. I remember going pretty fast in that thing.

I don't have any pics of my Galaxie, I don't think there are any pics of the old Fords my dad had either - I'd love to find one of the 60 Country Sedan. I think there's a pic of my dad in the 50s on one of his motorcycles, I'd like to find that. My siblings are lucky, both have cars captured on google street view.

  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 50,435

When we married my wife had an 84 or 85 horizon. 2.2l automatic. Fantastic in snow. Tranny even worked like a sequential manumatic.
