Often I wonder if it's just better to ignore old transmissions instead of risking stirring something up.

That seems to be the case. If it wasn't drained and refilled in early part of its
life, don't expect to drain and refill once in its twilight to fix it. Especially
using some of the additives the flush folks use for the quick money
    magic flush.

Neighbor had a Jimmy and it was used to tow a large board to southern
Kentucky with a 4-speed transmission. No cooler besides radiator cooler.
When I suggested he keep in 3 to help control the heat, that went nowhere.
Eventually, trans failed. Car wasn't meant to tow such a large boat.

My son bought the Yukon with 100k miles of boat towing in Alaska. The guy wanted to get a diesel PU. So it may have been abused. Though I have to suspect Midas on this one. Just too much of a coincidence. Hard to prove and not worth the effort. I am not a fan of that company anyway.

Yeah, but the photo wasn't saved right. Guess I'll have to photoshop it back in. ;)

I could have gotten these Bighorn in the photo with the chair but it was back at camp when we ran into ten of these guys.

I really like the Badlands and Black Hills. I believe someone on these boards likened the latter to a small scale Yosemite, and I think that is a fair description with all of the granite. Have you checked out the caves? Also, Deadwood is kind of a neat city and nice drive, even if you're not a gambler.

It's really nice country isn't it? Haven't checked out the caves, although we drove through the Wind Cave NP last trip and saw scads of buffalo.

I'm always a bit nervous driving anywhere near those guys, much less putting the chair out. Big puppies!

Been decades since I saw Wild Bill Hickok's grave in Deadwood.

Fin, always found driving across WA kind of interesting. Spokane could almost be the Midwest, then high desert followed by the Snoqualmie Pass and all within several hours. The cops in that state seem to practice the Maryland model though. Watch out for WSP in pickups, some with campers, vans and beaters. WA and OR; bet you see lots of Subaru's and VW's including old VW vans ;) Sounds like a good driving trip.

The diverse scenery all within an easy day trip makes this place more interesting, for sure. From wheat fields to high desert to alpine lands to forests to the ocean in a day, no problem.

WSP seem to have a "10" rule, as long as you are less than 10 over, you won't be hassled. I seldom drive faster than that (as the limit goes to 70 outside of the city), so no worries. Should be relaxing, I've been putting in a lot of hours lately, I need to get away and unwind a little.

I'm also still thinking of driving up to Banff or something at the beginning of October, too.

I bought some fresh ground bison from a specialty meat market. We had grilled Bison burgers that night. It was dry as expected, and not that tasty. Very expensive, more than a good ribeye at the time. Comes from a local bison ranch.

That they are! Surprisingly, to me anyway, the wood bison are actually bigger animals (on average?) than the plains bison. The plains bison always strike me as rather massive when I see one, moreso than their northern cousins.

The woods bison I've seen up in the NWT didn't look any bigger than these. However the cloud of mosquitos around each one was huge!

Passed on a bison burger for lunch. Passed on the elk too, which probably would have been good.

Saw a few hundred buffalo, ~8 antelope, and the carrot loving burros on the wildlife loop. And dozens of mountain bluebirds and an American Kestrel standing in the road with a big insect flapping under his right talon. Stared at lots of prairie dogs and the tops of their burrows hoping to spot a burrowing owl, but no luck there. Perfect weather, cool sleeping and there's a stream within spitting distance of the tent that would drown out any noise if there was any. Game Lodge campground in Custer.

No, they haven't. The bison in the Delta Junction area are plains bison. I wasn't sure, so I quickly researched it. It looks like they were introduced in 1928. There are a tiny number of permits allowed each year, but it's nearly impossible to get one.

We do currently have a herd of wood bison that are being "quarantined" down on the Kenai Peninsula, but they should be released to the interior soon. They are from the Canadian herd, and went extinct in Alaska pre-western colonization (but not by much, I've heard).

Probably good to get new blood into the herd. There is a lot of controversy over non indigenous species being introduced around AK and the rest of the USA. The Kaktovik lady I worked with for 18 years said the Musk Ox ran off the caribou. She lives in Delta now and got a Bison permit several years ago. I think she prefers caribou. Next to Dall Sheep, Caribou is my favorite AK big game meat. This years caribou, just posted by her on FB.

That's a nice one! Wow; that rack is gorgeous.

It is an interesting thing to consider how an introduced species will affect their surroundings. Musk ox are indigenous to Alaska, but not to the Seward Peninsula. Even though their survivability is not good in that area, they still seem to persist well enough to cause issues with the peninsula's other inhabitants (indigenous or otherwise).

The Delta bison herd is naturally limited in their distribution because of the interior's forests. They have a small grassland that they can inhabit, but they don't tend to wander too far because of a lack of food availability over vast swaths of land. Population pressures tend to be the only thing that really motivates them to wander, which is why the state culls around 40 animals a year (e.g., issues hunt permits).

A long-standing controversy in Alaska is the reindeer herds. Reindeer were introduced by the Russians (aka Europeans) during the fur trade years as a ready means of meat, and they taught natives in the area how to manage the herds. Now, only ethnic natives are allowed to raise them as a way of eliminating competition. It is entirely illogical. So, in order to raise reindeer, as a non-native or non-ethnic native, one must jump through the ridiculous hoop of importing them from Canada or other areas.

The only Palmer reindeer farm I am familiar with has Canadian deer. The ranchers with the Alaska herds zealously guard their monopoly (and I do mean zealously!).

Next thing you know they won't let every Tom, Dick and Jimmy grow peanuts.

Big honking rain storm approaching Cheyenne this morning; got a big urge for sushi after that. Bailed on our plans to go to Estes Park based on the forecasts (and also by the cloud cover we could see over the mountains). Heading down to the sand dunes instead, one of my favorite places. Soon we'll be complaining about the heat instead of the rain lol. Looks like it's 85 currently down that way.

At least getting through the middle of Denver was pretty easy midday. Fun seeing Peyton's stadium.

The sushi was okay but I think some people stacked the Trip Advisor reviews a tad. :)

Tried to boondock on BLM lands last night near Salinas but couldn't figure out the roads across the river. But found a small "boater" campground with that nice running water background noise. Just had to pay.

And another day, another flat. Got packed and the TPMS light was on. We were 7 miles to Salinas so I drove in. While the tire guy was checking the tires to see which one was low (it wasn't obvious), I spotted a nail. First guy didn't think it was repairable and didn't have my size in stock so he sent me to town. That shop said they'd fix it (must have laxer liability standards) and we walked around the corner for coffee. The nail wasn't in the sidewall but was within the first tread. We'll see what happens when we walk back at 9am MST.

Great stars last night on the 4 am GGP run.

Heh, the plug.patch in the one rear tire has been doing fine since the Marquette/VA/TN trip.

The patch from this morning on the other rear tire is doing fine - so far. ;)

I loved the place where we got the flat fixed - Salida CO. My wife reminded me first, that it was a lot like Montrose that I liked a lot a year or two ago. The second reminder was that it was at 7,000 feet and the winter, while maybe not too snowy, would be chilly.

I have a tanned rattlesnake skin packed away - will have to put it in the chair sometime after we get unpacked.

That reminds me this article about rattlesnakes just came out. Seems a more potent Mojave rattlesnake has migrated from CA. I don't count their stripes I just kill them. Not a fan of poisonous snakes of any kind.

That's anther fun thing you can do camping.

First get an old fashioned windup Big Ben alarm clock and swap the top bells for a rattlesnake rattle you've glued onto the striker.

Then set the alarm for around 9 pm and hide the clock behind a log or a bush near the campfire.

Along about 8:45, when everyone is nice and mellow, start telling snake stories....

    Incredible.

Here in Oregon, I've never seen(or heard) of anything bigger than about 300 lbs.

In the local we-got-everything store, at the sporting goods counter I saw a picture of a guy that had taken a 320 lb. cougar about 25 miles from my house! He was posing with it as it was laid out over a pile of snow, it looked like a COW!

Shoot, most of the grizz in Alaska didn't get that big. And I never would have guessed a cougar would go more than 150, tops.

Typically, you're right, the cougars are between 100 to 175 for a big male.

    This thing was a MUTANT.

I've seen cougar 5 times since I've lived here(usually on a hike or bike ride, just a quick glance as they head for the hills). I'm guessing they were right around 100-120 pounds.

Five is amazing. All I've ever seen were some tracks in camp. Well, did see a jaguarundi heading from the beach in Ixtapa in the 80's. We were on the side of the road when he crossed.

And why were we on the side of the road? Our taxi had a flat (naturally for me) and the cabbie's jack didn't work.

The way I look at it, if I've seen them 5 times, they've seem me 1000 times! Very stealthy critters. One of those times, my black lab rousted him(or her) from it's hidey-hole in some blackberry bushes.
