Anyone see on eBay where some outfit was selling "original" Isuzu 18" wheels for Trooper/Rodeo?

Wondering what type of tires one would use with an 18" wheel. Looks like about the only type would be a low profile pure street tire.

Wonder what Isuzu vehicle the 18" wheels were designed for?

Since the wheels have already sold and there are no more, I guess it would be OK to post the link?

The Isuzu Vehicross has 18" wheels. They probably were a set off of one.

This morning I found the parking break light in my Trooper is on no matter I engage the parking brake or not. Do you guys have the same experience? Maybe it is because of the cold weather last night (about 10 degree in Chicago).

Later I punched the instrument panel (it is the way I repair my old TV), and it didn't work on the parking brake light. But the TOD light came back. My TOD light was malfunctioned for a while, and I didn't expect that I made it work again when I tried to punch the parking brake light off. I think I will try to punch the instrument panel this afternoon when it is a littler warmer; I hope this time it can work on the CEL, which was on for a few months.

I will keep you guys updated about my 99 Trooper. We just got a Toyota mini-van. My wife tried to persuade me to sell the Trooper and keep her college car (130K miles 1992 2-door Tercel). She insist that my Trooper would stall in the traffic 4 times a week and I already visited dealer and mechanic with my Trooper 8 times this year; and all her Tercel need is changing oil. Since I am such a Trooper-lover, I still decide to keep it. (Another reason is: I may get less money from the 99 Trooper than from the 92 Tercel). Anyway, after all these colorful experience with my Trooper, I realize how Bible taught us: “Love is patient...”

I had a 1984 Trooper that I parked on a peir for the first couple years then on a heavily salted school bus route street, and once after not using a a week because I could not afford the fuel, the parking brake stuck on. The actual parking brake was on and the car could barely move. The problem was a belcrank (lever) under the floor was rusted from the salt. I took it apart and greased it well and not more parking brake problems in 200K miles on that Trooper.

    ..

I have owned 3 Troopers and all have been very reliable. We used to take my 140K miles old 1995 Trooper instead of the 5K miles minivan on trips when we were worried if the van would make it, but we were certain to make it in the Trooper.

    ..

I have a 2001 Trooper now and there was a strange behavior yesturday. When almost warmed up it seemed to come off the fast idle too soon and idled rough at a light, maybe down to 300 or 400 RPMs, I could not get it to repeat.

I have only 5/32 left on my 255/70R16 Revos, I have been worried about driving in snow with only 5/32. Well, earlier this week I drove in 1 inch of snow and lots of ice and packed snow. I was very happy with the tire performance. I did not slip unless I tried to make it slip by punching the gas in 2wd or slamming on the brakes. Many other cars were in the ditches. A co-worker told me it was very difficult not to spin his tires with even a light touch on the gas.

    ..

I took advantage of the snowy parking lot to do a couple laps with 4WD-Lo just to keep the parts lubricated. (A friend with a Toyota LandCruiser that cost more than all three of my Troopers combined, did not put it in 4WD-Lo for a year or two and now cannot get it into 4WD-Lo)

Yesterday afternoon, I punched the instrument panel again. This time, it didn’t work. The parking brake light was still on. But on my way back home, after a sharp left turn, the parking brake light went off itself. My Trooper always brings surprise to me! Maybe that’s the reason a lot of people think Toyota is boring. I think we should be more creative in the maintenance works with Troopers.
  • makayemakaye Member Posts: 81
I think you may want to check that your brake FLUID level is not low. That is the second function of the dash light. The likely reason it went off around a sharp turn is the fluid sloshed around a bit and turned off the sensor.
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Your fluid is low, and if your fluid is low and you don't have a leak it means your pads are low. Replace your pads and you should be in good shape.

A few months ago I heard the same story that told me by one Trooper owner. His TOD light blinked when it was in 2wd mode and also red light came on in a little while. The problem was fixed after replacing some wires used to connect front axle valves in TOD unit. They had became rusty because of road anti-frozen reagents. I am not a mechanic or something, just can give you a tip to direct specialist's efforts. Hope it helps.

I just wish happy holidays to everyone, everywhere. I enjoyed reading the forum during this year. Thanks for your memory for Trooper. The best truck I have ever had.

I went to AutoZone to read the CEL light yesterday. (I believe they already know me after several visits). The CEL is on for about 1 month and the engine stalls about 4 times each week. This time, I got code 137 157 171 1171. Most of them are about low voltage in oxygen sensor, lean in fuel mix. I think the reasons may be the following:

    1. Intake Gasket. I changed it at the dealer last June, but it is hard say it will go bad again or not.

    2. oxygen sensor.

    3. Fuel pump. Last time I visit the dealer for the problem, the dealer recommend me to change the fuel filter and fuel pump. I changed the fuel filter and the old filter seemed to have no problem. The dealer don't think it is the Gasket problem (since they already changed it)

My fellow Trooper fan, can you guys use your expertise and give me some suggestions?

    Thanks!

    Peter

I would be a bit concerned if I'm getting a brake lite and I have 84K miles on the original pads. I'd say the pads need to be changed because the fluid level is likely low causing the lite to come on.

As far as the CEL light goes, I doubt it is a fuel pump issue. If the engine runs fine but stalls occasionally its getting plenty fuel. The pump is designed to pump much more than needed, which is always recirculated back to the fuel tank. Since you recently replaced the fuel filter, and it appeared to be fine, I doubt the pump has any blockage causing the problem.

Just made a 2700 mile trip to Colorado thru all kinds of weather and road conditions in my 99' trooper. Never had a hitch of any kind along the way. I had just moved up to the P265X70 R16 tires before leaving. Didn't seem to suffer any mileage loss or off the mark speed loss. On dry level roads and clear weather conditions at 65-70 mph got about 20 mpg. I'm real pleased with how the Trooper handles with these tires. Seems to ride a shade better than before for some reason.
  • sbcookesbcooke Member Posts: 2,297
Stalling multiple times? Sounds like the intake manifold gasket problem. Mine was similar to a loss of vacuum and then gasp, stall.

You said yours was changed? I think it is very possible to go again. I believe there are multiple img's...they mentioned upper and lower when mine was changed? Perhaps you only had one replaced originally?

My engine kept getting codes, but nothing that said "bad img". It took 5 trips to get it fixed.

Think EGR. I have had many of the same problems on my '99. Intermittent CEL's for the last 10k miles, accompanied by varying amounts of engine dysfunction, including hard starting, rough idle, and stalling or near stalling. Finally, at about 100k miles, I took it in to check it out. The check engine light has been on for a month.

Answer: the EGR valve is sticking open. Too much carbon buildup I guess. Freed it up a bit and it runs great. I haven't replaced it yet.

Some on this board have attempted to clean it. I'm curious if this produced any long term good results. My mechanic said it's a temporary fix. It really needs a new EGR - pretty expensive item I found out. Easy to replace, but part is expensive.

I'm going to refer back to previous posts regarding cleaning. Any follow up on how well cleaning really works would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

Interesting - EGR complaints are up a bit in one of the Odyssey discussions, for vans with similar mileage. Must be a sign of advanced age or something.

Just noticed today that it blinked for a few mins and than went to solid tires in 2 wd. The same thing happened last time. Does anyone know where to locate these wires ??
  • peterismepeterisme Member Posts: 68
This morning, my Trooper stalled three times. When I shifted from P to R, it stalled twice and when I got off an expressway, it stalled again. (All of them happened when my foot was off gas pedal). I hope I can have some time to bring it to mechanic this weekend. :(
  • peterismepeterisme Member Posts: 68
Thanks a lot for your suggestions.

One more question before the new year ;)

Where does the EGR valve locate and is it difficult to replace it by myself?

    Happy new year!

    Peter
  • gprodickgprodick Member Posts: 36
Is this a price on the EGR valve or is this referring to something else? I was quoted a much, much higher price. I don't have Autozones where I live, but I guess I'll shop around. I'm encouraged, anyway.

Peterisme - the EGR is located atop the engine at the passenger side rear of the engine. It's a cylindrical deal about 2" in diameter with a wire connector on the top. This has to be one of the simplest maintainance tasks to do. Although I haven't taken it off myself, I know my mechanic did it in less than a minute, and not much longer to replace it. It's held on by two bolts. I believe it's simply unbolt, detach the electrical connectors, and replace. Ta, da. I guess there is a concern that you be careful not to damage the EGR gasket when you remove it.
  • bsmart1bsmart1 Member Posts: 377
It's very simple to clean using some carburator cleaner and a wire brush. It can be just as reliable as a new one after this treatement. The dealer will quote a price of a couple hundred dollars for a new one, and about $100 to change it for you. Hey, they gotta make money some way. But yeah, its very easy to replace or pull and clean. Just be careful not to damage the graphoil gasket, it's pretty delicate.

When mine was acting up, I got the CEL and a rough idle. Never bad enough to completely stall, but enough to notice it wasn't normal.

You can actually order it from autozone online. Check out autozone.com it says it's the whole valve for $119, and tells you to clean out the chamber of carbon. I am going to get one for sure as I've been throwing an EGR CEL for a while.

The new EGR from the factory comes with a new gasket. Or you can get a new one from the dealer for about $10. Given that it is virtually impossible to get an old EGR off without pulling up some of the gasket, I'd spend the $10 on a new one. Otherwise, you are just setting yourself up for a new air leak.

Just picked up a very nice 2000 S 4WD with 74K miles for $8700.It's a daily driver now,but will be retired to "weekend adventure vehicle" in a year or two.I hope to literally keep it forever.

Just one problem. The beast won't run on regular, and I even get a little valve clatter running 102 octane? Could it maybe need a valve adjustment?

    thanks in advance,

    Rob
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Has to do with your oil, not the octane fuel IIRC. If it has to do with the octane then your knock sensor is probably broken and not retarding the timing properly.

    -mike
  • makayemakaye Member Posts: 81
    Or pinging/knocking?

If pinging, also check the EGR thread above.

1988 Trooper, AUTO trans. , 165,000 miles....just had an idle quality problem corrected with new idle air controller, new EGR valve and a few other pieces replaced. The temp gauge was not registering reliably(showing full cold most of the time)at the time and now shows full hot all the time. I've replaced the sending unit with 2 new switches with no change. The major problem we have is the 4 sp OD trans will not shift into OD range even when warmed up. Is this related to the sending unit signal problem? Garage thinks its an internal valve body problem but I don't buy that. Anyone with any experience with this and suggestions would be appreciated.
  • robeadesrobeades Member Posts: 2
Sounds like cleaning the EGR is the place to start since there is no cost involved.Where is the knock sensor, and how much do they cost?Is there a way to test this componant?

    Thanks guys,

Yep, I've put it off for months, but it's now time that I did it!

Based on a lot of horror stories (CEL lights) related to spark plugs that are not Trooper - friendly, the consensus seems to be that only OEM Denso's should be used. The user manual for my 2001 LS lists "two" Denso's -

    K16PR-P11, and

PK16PR11 (cheaper, and easier to find)

Does anybody know why I shoudn't use the "PK" version of the plug?
  • troop2shostroop2shos Member Posts: 235
FWIW, I went with the NGK's without any problems.

Recently bought a 2000 Trooper and have been considering new tires. Wanted to go to a 245/75/16 due to value for $ but is there any problem with the hard spare cover fitting over the taller size, because I want to change the spare also?
  • wlbrown9wlbrown9 Member Posts: 867
I changed mine out last year between 65,000 & 70,000 miles. I used the Champion RC10PYP4 that turned out to be the same as the original. Worked pretty good.

One note, I figured out a way to deal with the rubber boots without tearing them. Use compressed air or a pump with one of the little adapters for blowing up air matress, etc. The boot pops right off.. I figured that out after the 6th one refused to release it's grip on the plug and I thought I might tear it... Only sold as a set with the coil from what I hear and over $100 for the set.
  • silverghostsilverghost Member Posts: 154
Thanks for the air pump tip. I was gonna try that, 'cause I remember reading a previous post about it.

I'm thinking I may try those Champions myself. That plug is also recommended in my owner's manual, and I can get 'em for $4.00 each locally.

BTW, I just ordered a serpentine belt from St. Charles for $17 - dealer wanted $79 for the part and labor. Replacing it seems too simple to pay them that kind of money. At 47K, the belt has a lot of cracks on the ribbed side, so thought I'd be better safe than sorry.
  • silverghostsilverghost Member Posts: 154
For those of you considering replacing the serpentine belt on late model Troopers, here's a belt routing diagram -

    http:\\www.mjw.com/amigo/images/belt.jpg

Yeah, it is for an Amigo, but it's identical to my '01 Trooper LS.

Since it is apparently such a piece of cake, I'm gonna be doing it this weekend. The diagram is important to me, just in case I get confused about the correct routing after I take off the old belt.
  • boxtrooperboxtrooper Member Posts: 843
The hard cover and the soft cover before that, only fit the original size spare tire, 245/70R16, and no other.

    ..

I replaced the spare also with a larger tire, and the hard cover lives in the attic.

    ..

I am considering the LT245/75R16LRC tire for more tread depth and a stiffer side wall, I like a firm ride. The Revo in this size has tread as wide as a 255/70 and is as tall as a 265/70. The LTX M/S does not have a LT245/75R16LRC, and the LRE is very heavy which means poor MPG and acceleration, but very long tire life.

    hi,

i'm curious about what the "idle air controller" is - my 98 trooper has been having a problem where when cold and stopped in traffic the motor is revving fairly high - if i pop it into neutral it revs at 2000 revs - if its in drive its pushing fairly hard on the transmission and revving to 1200 or so... this morning i took off a wire to a sensor which is right on the air intake at the very front of the motor - it solved the problem instantly!! what did i disconnect? was it the "idle air controller" you talk about? the engine check light came on a few minutes later but the car is still running perfectly.

    any ideas?

    thanks for your help.

  • bsmart1bsmart1 Member Posts: 377
Yep, this is a temperature related problem. It has to get up to operating temperature for that O.D. to kick in. Something is wrong with the sensor or the ECM. Its odd that the temperature gauge is pegged out all the time. That could be read as a bad sensor to the ECM which might prevent the O.D. from coming on.

Those of you with 275/70R16 tires, do they look fat?

    ..

I noticed that the Michelin LTX M/S comes in an H rated speed in the size 275/70R16. These are just slightly less tall than the 265/75R16 and a cm wider.

    ..

The difference in price is something like 2% extra to get the H speed tires.

    ..

Is there any advantage to H rated tires on a Trooper that is generally not fast as H...?

Just dropped off my '01 2WD Trooper (47K miles) at the dealer this morning. Been experiencing a transmission shudder when it shifts into overdrive. They found that the fluid was very discolored, even though they had changed it at 32K. Said they believed the tranny was bad, but they needed to flush it (at my cost) and test drive it to be sure. If it is in fact toast, the whole unit would be replaced under warranty.

I don't hear much about Trooper trannies going bad, unless the fluid is never changed. This one has never towed anything, and has only been driven loaded one time.

A sobering prospect for other Trooper owners!

My starter went tonight. Starter is $300 plus that much labor. Evidently it is a bear to get at to replace. I told them to also do a drain and fill on A/T. Whole bill should be $700 and something. Let's hope the alternator doesn't go next! My only other mechanical repair has been the A/T repalced at 111K under warranty. So this is my first real out of pocket. Hopefully everything will last till about 200K if I am lucky. Funny thing is, starter gave me no clickity-clack or any warning sounds. Went all at once and froze. Dealer works 3 shifts in service dept. AAA towed me in at 6; they called and said I could pick it up at 11pm tonight. A big bill but, I will have it for work tomorrow. Cheers to all!
  • df2000df2000 Member Posts: 60
Yep...Starter replace is a BIG PITA anless you have body lift. Front part of exhaust system has to be removed to get old starter out and new in.

And all these bolts on exhaust rusted dead.

I read on another site guys actually left exhaust alone and instead lifted the engine 3" to change starter.

This was a SURPRISE. I took my 01' Trooper to have the front end aligned, front wheel bearings repacked, and some tire work done. The mechanic came back after all the work was done and let me know that the front wheel bearings on this model Trooper are permanent sealed bearings. They can't be repacked. What?? Anyone been paying to have your wheel bearings repacked on an 01' 2 wheel drive Trooper?

The mechanic also let me know that this is the 2nd hardest vehicle to align properly that he's ever seen. A Ford is the hardest in his opinion.

He worked on the Trooper about 2 hours to align it, but it drives totally differently now than it did before. Great feedback from the steering wheel now compared to yesterday.

This will be my last post on the 88' Trooper. The automatic transmission gave out on it last weekend out on the interstate. It had 164K miles of service on it. Had the vehicle towed to the local transmission shop for an estimate on repairs. He laughed and said 'we don't take those apart or even look inside them. Parts are too expensive to even mess with it. We try to find a reliable used unit with a warranty and put it in for you'. He called around and found one for $1500 plus installation. Sorry, I can't see putting that kind of money in it. Got an offer from a local salvage yard of $450 so I signed the title over to em'. Its history now.
  • bawbcatbawbcat Member Posts: 118
Not sure about '88, but the '92+ Troopers with auto transmission use a GM design (although it is manufactured in France I think). I'm surprised that parts are so outrageous. Anyway, sorry to hear about your troubles and sorry to see you go. Thanks for your contributions to this board.
