Consumers show little interest in pure electric cars, according to a new study from the Indiana University School of Public and Environmental Affairs, but the market potential is better for plug-in hybrids such as the Chevrolet Volt, Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid and Ford C-Max Energi.

    There's a steep learning curve for EVs. Buyers have to be really motivated to do the homework.

    Homework, indeed. First, the average consumer has to be able to afford an entry-level luxury car. Second, the consumer either has to find a place to have the car recharged, or (if the car owner is a homeowner) modify the home's electrical system to accommodate a charging system.

    Pure electrics have to come down much more in price before any of the general public can consider this class of vehicle.
