I've seen drivers do that to warn other drivers of a speed trap. Also, if you were in one of your trucks, sometimes those can appear to have high beams on because of the height.
Here in Colorado, we flash our lights to oncoming drivers to warn them about the presence of large animals near the road

Well, hopefully both intents have the same effect: Get the drivers in the on-coming lane to slow down and be alert. All's well that ends well!

I've received the deer flash and the cop flash.

Question of the day - does the new Audi S6 have a turn signal defect?

Defect as in the car was not equipped with them, or defect as in they don't work if somebody actually moves the lever inside the car?

Saved by his dash cam. The inconsiderate other driver tried to say he had run the light, when actually she had run the light in advance of its turning green.

Who here has a dash cam?

I'm about a week from having mine up and running. My primary goal is documenting the strange driving practices here, and maybe catching nice scenery and odd cars, but the crash potential is good too. I trust a camera more than LEO or crooked judge rulings.

I've long felt dash cams would be much more valuable to me than back-up cams. Wish automakers would provide it as a built in option.

I really need the backup camera on my Malibu. Mirrors just aren't enough help.

    That's a really good idea!

While they're pushing sunroofs and mandatory leather to be able to get that one option I'd like to have, they could include dash cams for minor cost. I'd like to see rear-facing and front dash cams. My only concern would be the quality wouldn't be up to par--just like the built-in navigation systems for a long time were clunky and not updateable.

A factory integrated dashcam would be cool, I'd choose it. A good quality one is just a few hundred retail, and it'd be easy to hardwire in during assembly.

Drove onto the highway a couple times over the weekend - saw two different cars weaving around, passing in all lanes, no signals at all. Guess what they were. Nope, not a LeSabre or an E-class or a Tempo or a Cressida. Shockingly enough, a Cayenne GTS and a BMW E90. I was shocked! They are usually driven so responsibly.

Maybe "carcam-app" is a low cost way to try car-cam ?
    (I'm considering dash/windshield mounts for my pageplus/veriz iphone-4 or my sprint/scratchwireless/no-monthly-charge android phone... )

I see some law enforcement professionals are upset about how the "Waze" app can be used to pinpoint speed traps (I mean safety and freedom checks), feigning fear that they might be stalked and targeted. I don't think anyone falls for it. Don't want to risk interruption to the revenue stream. Just like those with a badge who irresponsibly freak out when they are on civilian-operated camera are operating under "CYA" too.

If they'd only dare to enforce the signal and distraction rules already on the books, the $$$ would pour in. Or maybe cut the crony capitalism involved in traffic cameras, and claim more of the take.

Traffic wasn't bad today, but it was annoying that the big blundering should-require-a-license-endorsement SUV that dawdles and wanders under the limit on a wide open 35mph arterial then flies above the limit on a narrower 30mph street.

The high end Escort Radars have been working with Smartphones for years now with an App that combines real time GPS with warnings from both the radar detector itself and user inputs. It works great as all the worldwide users of radar detectors now work in conjunction with your own. It is fantastic, but you have to remember to log in and log on everytime you get in the car, and it eats battery.

I bet eventually, the self-titled safety sector (whether it be LEOs or cooked judges or insurance puppets) who are all about doing as I say and not as I do, will lead a nationwide movement to ban radar detectors in any form. They've already won in backwards places like Virginia and France. Funny thing, they are legal in Russia, which is as close to a totalitarian dictatorship as you'll find in the somewhat developed world.

Today I saw an X6 using its turn signal - I had to do a double take at such consideration. I didn't know those could be optioned up so high.

I think dashcams became so popular in Russia because of the rampant corruption. The government isn't totalitarian anymore--it's just fully corrupted, so it's "every man for himself" out there. Lots of insurance fraud, drunk driving, that sort of thing.

When I'm driving on Calif. freeways I play a game called "Let's Find the Crazies". It's kind of like "vehicular profiling" coupled with "behavorial tip-offs". Of course, the one that will eventually get me is probably going to be the innocuous-looking next door neighbor serial killer ("He was such a nice man"), but I do have a list of prejudices that I keep handy in my mind. Such as:

    1. Any badly bashed up (or multi-colored) car that is speeding.

    2. Anyone wearing a big hat.

    3. Pickup trucks with 6-inch ++ lifts on knobby tires speeding in the rain.

    4. Any camaro of any vintage driven by any type of person

    5. Any vehicle covered in Harley Davidson stickers

    6. Anyone in the fast lane riding a dirt bike and wearing a back pack and a hand-painted helmet.

    7. Motor homes

    8. Airport vans

Yeah, I neglected to add the comments that came with that URL:

INFLUENCE AND MONEY YOU CAN CHANGE ANYONE’S STORY"

i'd consider it the opposite of inconsiderate, A3. if you actually did get an R8, just go to the cop department now and pre-pay for a few speeding tickets, maybe try to get a quantity discount.

Actually, I have to report that yesterday I got an inconsiderate detention (and complete waste of time) from the CHP for supposedly going pretty fast "68 in a 55 isn't fast on a perfect day." Since I wasn't 15 over which is the usual speeding ticket threshold, he gave me a fix-it ticket for no front license plate. So if I drove around an R8 like that in the link above, I'm sure not having a rear license plate would get ticketed even faster.

@Mr_Shiftright, my #9 is anyone pulling a trailer. Special avoidance goes to rental trailers, homemade trailers and people pulling boats (I have two friends who both dropped jetboats on the road and a third was passed by his own trailer one time).

This afternoon I saw an F10 5er just blow through a red light. I won't describe the "driver". Well, maybe it slowed down a little, a 20+mph California stop. Otherwise, traffic here hasn't been too bad - the usual stupid things, but that's what you get with goofy enforcement policies.

I hear Seattle is going to embark on a "Vision Zero" plan like the one championed by the unpopular NYC mayor. Lower speed limits. More bike lanes. I am sure it will make Seattle an even more appealing place to live.

Got to honk twice in the fintail today - first a woman pulled in front of me, I swear she looked me in the eye before stumbling out. When I hit the horn, she took off, funny. Then an old Explorer dawdles out in front of me as I approach at ~30, nobody behind me in the line of sight, goes about 20, then turns onto a side street at about 6mph, I couldn't hold back.

I also saw a Golf have a close call as it veered left across a few lanes, and narrowly missed other cars. Love it. Also a depressingly low amount of signal use today. As was said, regressing to a mean. Keyword is regressing.

Wrong car but will your dashcam record sounds too? (Hopefully just horn toots, and not sheet metal crunching).
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 57,092
Yep it will. I am now thinking of how one could be rigged up in the fintail - it makes unique noises and has a loud horn, I think some people might get a kick out of it. I'll just have to try to not narrate.

I absolutely saw the LEO's, came over a crest on a hill (on a windy 2-lane highway near Julian), however, this part wasn't windy, it was straight, including over the hill it was straight, and when I crested, 2 SUV CHP vehicles coming the opposite direction had already crested over their hill. I hit the brakes immediately! (I don't feel I was going that fast, but I was driving spiritedly). A full second or so after hitting the brakes the radar detector goes off, so I'm thinking without looking at the speedo I'm perfectly fine, I got in enough braking to thwart their radar reading.

Not thinking they would come after me, and I did check in my rearview and it didn't seem like they were immediately concerned. I made a bad assumption again, I need to stop doing that. In the back of my mind, I didn't think they'd chase, but I kept going spiritedly on the windy sections up ahead to make sure I wouldn't be caught "just in case" by SUV's. Unfortunately about a mile ahead, a slow moving Jeep thwarted my pseudo escape.

I really didn't think anything of it; as I assumed I was in the clear (didn't know he noticed the no license plate in front; apparently I was going too slow allowing him to notice that fact! :) ) So about a minute or two! after following the Jeep, here he comes zooming in behind me. I immediately think I should have found a side road to pull off on and hide (the safe assumption) to have prevented this. Of course, if it wasn't for the Jeep, it would have been Sayonara CHP.

I don't know how fast I was going, but 70 or 68 is probably not far off. He said something about estimating my speed at 70 or 75 (I forget which) , but that is utter hogwash. No way can he estimate speed accurately so quickly at that range. I think the sport suspension prevents the nose from diving when braking just enough to keep it from being obvious (and I didn't slam the brakes; though maybe I should have). I question that he radar me at 68 though; that seems high considering I was on the brakes moderately.

Either way, my braking was indeed enough that I didn't get a speeding ticket, and only God knows if I had my front license plate on; if that would have been enough to prevent the waste of time being pulled over and given a $25 fix-it ticket.

Fintail,, you should install one of those locomotive horns. I guy used to drive I-90 in front of our store and blow one of those. They HAVE to be illegal and could easily cause someone nearby to have a heart attack!

Used to have a BMW motorcycle, and the stock horn would scare the HELL out of folks when I used it. Sounded like a train, and saved my butt more than once.

I know a guy who found a pair of 6 volt horns that came off an old Pontiac. These were the ones that were about 18 inches long and mounted on a bracket under the hood. He rigged them up in his 12 volt Chevy truck and they could be heard three blocks away. I don't know how long they lasted getting 12 volts but he didn't use them much.

I think you got the fix it ticket because in effect, he gave you a break on the speeding issue. But he wanted to send a message because AFTER he did a yo-yo, he perceived you as "running". So if I perceive your post correctly, one of the two LEO were heading in your opposite direction AND one was gunning you to see if it was worth his while to turn around and either re-pace or re- gun you (they need to be at most 1/8 mile BEHIND to pace or gun, and within 5 mph.) I think that if you didn't hit the brakes and just slowed to 5 mpg above or @ the speed limit, I do not think he would have even bothered to give you the fix it ticket.

I am a little more generous, but crawling around a corner will get it, and not using a signal helps too. Also, pulling right out in front of me when there's nobody behind me for blocks will earn you scorn.

The fintail's horn is pretty loud - if I ever changed it (I doubt it), I'd put in a horn from a MB 600. This is louder than the fintail, and a little deeper, but it's the same idea. Here's a good clip

Made a quick round trip to Portland today. Holiday traffic earlier this morning was a breeze, easiest weekday trip I've ever had between here and Olympia, few LLCs or idiots, quite a few speed traps in the Nisqually area. Trip back had numerous LLCs and less speed traps, a dearth of signal use, but nothing too irksome otherwise. Beautiful day too.

And now my car has a front and rear cam setup, so it's just a matter of time until I have something to share :)

I got this model, and had it professionally installed - a few hours labor, but I know it will work right, and it is quality work:

I just went out and tested it - it works. It is wifi enabled, and there is a phone app for it, so I can get videos directly with the phone. I'll try to get a little driving video in the next few days and post it as an example.

Ahhh, I don't think the officer was that smart to perceive that I was running, as in truth, he rightfully thought I wasn't being chased by him. They didn't do any U-turns while they were still within view. So there is no way he could have observed my speed, the road gets very windy very soon; lined with trees on both sides, not much visibility unless there's' a long straight. Both LEO's were heading in the opposite direction, both in tandem right next to each other. Guess one of them had nothing better to do.

I broke way before we crossed paths, so they couldn't of observed my braking I'm thinking. If I'd of rolled to near the speed limit without braking, his radar reading would have been higher. 55 MPH is a low speed limit, and isn't a maximum speed limit. In court I could rightfully argue the defacto speed limit is 65 MPH using the prudent and reasonable rule of law. My seeing them, my braking, and their radar blip on me happened in that order, and all well before we crossed side by side. I was never radared again, because by the time he got in view again, I was going very slow behind a jeep that was turning off to a side street right when I got the lights put on me to pull over.

My radar detector is why I know their "speed" estimates are pure BS. One time, on a long empty 2 lane highway in Nevada, I got an early radar warning blip that must of been a car a mile ahead of me getting radar on it. I slowed down to the speed limit. Sure enough, a minute later (closing distance of 2 miles since we are headed in opposite directions), I get radar on me again this time from visible range off in the distance I see the cop now. Why would he radar me if he knew I was going the speed limit? Why bother with the radar unless "estimating" speed is either completely fabricated, completely made up, or completely inaccurate.

You did get the fix it ticket, so the speed theory is pure conjecture on your part. It would have been interesting to see if you could have gotten a speeding ticket dismissed or found not guilty.

Not completely, because I know when they used their radar due to my radar detector telling me exactly when they did "shoot" me. But yes, I'll never know for sure what happened on his end, I just know I told him I appreciated not being given a speeding ticket, and left it at that. I'd rather not lengthen my detention any more than necessary giving them any thought or time to change their mind and add offenses to the ticket as some Santee Sheriff has been known to do.

My experience has been if they are confident you were truly speeding (> or = to 15 over the underposted SL) they will give you the speeding ticket first and foremost. That's their bread and butter money maker.

    It's $360 vs. $25.

Quite so. The fix-it ticket was just a consolation prize so he didn't walk away empty-handed. All told, reasonably well-handled.

Would be interesting to "challenge" the fix it ticket in court though. Assuming he didn't have dash cam video of the front end of my car saved and stored in an evidence file, he'd have no real evidence my front license plate was missing.

I have a feeling there is a big penalty for challenging and "losing" a fix it ticket charge though, $25 would likely become some abominable number. And yes, before any of you ask, I am guilty, but in America, I have a right to require the officer to still prove it in court without my testifying against myself.

Drove all over town this afternoon, reasonably heavy traffic. I lost count but there were around six instances where people stopped "short" to let other drivers merge from side streets in front of them. Even the Texans were driving good today LOL.
