Nothing new. Chevy's done this before with the Impala and Malibu. Great way to get some extra profit on an older model that's still semi-competitive. Infiniti does this with the G37/Q40 too now.

Nissan Rogue Select too; not sure it it'll be available for the 2016 models.

Since they sell a significant amount of vehicles to fleet customers this is a nice way to help residuals and resale value on the new models by ensuring a larger chunk of them go to retail customers and leave the cheaper, outgoing models for fleets. While it's not top of the class at least the outgoing Cruze is still a solid car that's built well.

If I were an actual consumer I'd much rather get slightly better resale and a touch of exclusivity by not having the new model go right to rental lot special. A potential downside is that if GM's rental customers don't get the new car, larger amounts of renters won't get to experience it right away but that could be countered by a strong launch campaign (which is one thing GM could learn to do better by not just do an initial big budget launch and then dramatically cutting advertising to save ad dollars, but that's for another post).
