Wouldn't the ACV in a total loss be the same regardless of the payoff? So you would just get cash back from the insurance company, obviously you could have a gap but that's the case even if you put 0 down right?

Why would the dealer not like it?

That still wouldn't take your interest to zero. The money factor is multiplied by the sum of the residual and the adjusted CAP cost. Even if you pay all of the depreciation upfront, the money factor is still applied to an amount equal to twice the residual.

You are paying finance charges on the full price of the vehicle, not the depreciation. After all, that's the amount the bank has to pay the dealer.

Nope - for a lease, the vehicle owner is the bank, not the lessee. The bank is made whole, and your up front money is gone.

I suppose the dealer wouldn't mind - they are selling a car. The bank, OTOH, isn't collecting that much interest in your scenario.

I guess I'm not entirely sure what it is you hope to gain by doing this. If the purpose is to skip paying interest, then simply buy the car with cash and skip the whole leasing or financing run around.

Michaell, I have personally received a check back in a total loss just weeks after leasing, where I had equity in the lease because I had negotiated a very low price relative to the value at the time. I believe the insurance company writes a check to the bank up to the payoff and any excess to the lessee. Of course there can be no excess and the lessee has to make up a shortfall.

That's rare, I'll admit, but it can happen.

But, was there any up front cash from you in that particular transaction? Did you get that back?

I would say that 99% of leases are upside down for the entire lease term, especially those where the residual has been inflated to artificially lower the payment (*cough*BMW*cough*).

Residual is a percentage of the full MSRP.

If the full $5000 goes to CAP cost reduction (meaning you pay 1st payment and all other charges upfront, in addition to the $5000), then the payment would be $192.50 +tax

I doubt it will change any time soon. Plus, the new model CR-V typically doesn't come out until late Fall, so it could be quite awhile. Don't expect big incentives, in any case.

New to the forums, and been doing some research on how to get best deals in a lease. Currently looking at the CRV EX 2017 here in Houston, TX. Looking for the MF (Tier 1/Tier 1+) and Residual for the 2WD EX for 36 mo/12K.

If it helps, I'm planning to give $0 down. From what the guy said, they have a pretty high turnover rate, but not sure if true or sales tactic.

Hi - Are the MF and residuals changing as of Aug 29th? (I think prior was through Aug 28?) Any deals for Labor Day weekend? This is for 2017 Honda CRV Touring; FWD; 3 yr / 12k mile lease; MSRP is $33,435 and purchase price is $31,100; this is in Texas.

They gave me the option of either going with 318/month +down payment of 2318+ about 3000 taxes and fees (forgot the exact number) OR to include that tax number into the monthly payment and pay 400/month and the above down payment of 2318.
