My 2006 Impala ltz had this issue, and it would just shut off at random times. Our regular mechanic couldn't figure out what was causing the problem so we finally broke down and took it in to the dealership. They diagnosed it as the camshaft position sensor and the connector. They replaced these parts and the bill was $445. $360 of which was labor. So we paid it and went on our way. Now I've looked it up and the average cost for this is about half of what we paid. Just really sucks that my regular mechanic couldn't figure it out and saved me some money.

Well think of it as going to an MD specialist rather than a GP. Ongoing training and special equipment do count. Of course, you're also paying for dealer overhead, etc.

My 2012 Impala is having the same issue. The biggest part of this problem is my car shuts completely down and leaves me stranded. Its happened three times now. This last time I could not even restart it and had to have it towed. My warranty is almost out and the dealership keeps telling me they cannot find anything. I do NOT recommend purchasing one of these cars. It is dangerous when the reduced power comes on and I am on a two lane 55 mile an hour road with no shoulders. Ridiculous!!

You don’t need a repair service to Look at the problem.

Known issue with Chevy Impala 2008-2016 and still going

Per Chevy Tech / compliant Department which I talked to a gentleman who treated me like some D-women. They will never do anything about this issue. EVER.
    Codes
    P0042 / P0455 EVAP LEAKS

It’s a $95 part from RockAuto.com . I have been buying cars parts there for years. The garage will charge you over $200 for this part lmao. And another $200-300 to replace it. MY ESTIMATE $490.00 HAHAHA

Buy the part, and Everyone has a mechanical friend or family member in their Circle- it’s an easy peasy part to replace, for a minimal skilled mechanic. YouTube.com- if you have mechanical skills- do it yourself.

Here is the issue- It will never case any harm to let it go to your vehicle, it not needed for Inspection and after you replace it, it will almost definitely go bad again within a years’ time.

Again- 03/27/18 I spoke to Chevy and they absolutely know this is a warranty issue- will never recall it-
    1. Not a safety issue / that’s why.
    2. All they did is repeat themselves, it’s not an issue
    3.
ABS, TRACTION CONTROL, STABILITRAK LIGHTS: all fixable on your own Rockauto.com all parts for above issues $238. (Includes the EVAP canister)

Car lot wanted $2106.60 for all the above.

@szerie71. What you have shared here is very common, and that is you gave us portions of information instead of a precise full explanation. For one I suspect that the P0042 is a typo and you meant P0442 small leak which could occasionally go along with the P0455 large leak. There are a lot of different reasons that an evaporative system can generate leak codes and what needs to be done to repair one car might not be what is wrong with the next one. Someone has to take the time and test each vehicle correctly to come up with the right solution for each event. Based on the prices you listed it suggests that the canister vent valve was failing on your car which is a common issue, and yes it is usually relatively easy to replace on an Impala. The greater level of knowledge is found in knowing how to test and prove that it has failed. But at least you didn't just try and claim it was a gas cap which is rarely the problem.

What you can buy parts for and do yourself has no bearing on what a shop needs to charge to provide the full service. As mentioned, if this was a cannister vent valve that is a reatively easy repair but the shop has to be ready to do tens of thousands of different services to try and fill the consumers needs and that makes tooling, training and technician experience expenses that are well beyond what most consumers can comprehend. Add in all of the other business expenses like rent, insurance, heating, lighting, taxes and what you are going to find is that the majority of small shops aren't charging enough to stay in business for the long term and they will soon disappear leaving you the consumer fewer choices for how to have your car repaired when the problem isn't such a simple one.

Not true. Many shops dont install knock off cheap replica's of the original parts and guarantee their work for two years and 24,000 miles. From there it's one thing to just replace the vent valve but quite often there may be a common issue that causes a premature failure that can be addressed in a TSB that may have the technician relocate the component and install special hoses to prevent the repeat failure. Someone who just replaces parts wouldn't know that, and they dont even know to go look to see if there is an updated repair.

Where exactly did $2106.60 come from? That is not an estimate for an evaporative cannister and a vent valve. Do you have a written copy with itemized labors and part numbers for what they said needed done? If so, can you post it? (photo and/or typed?)
