Can anyone explain their experience with a residual loan (balloon payment) for a Honda Odyssey? Did it lower your price? Did you walk away owing at the end? Did you buy it out? Did you walk away with some cash at the end to put toward a new car purchase?

Generally, $490/mo is pretty expensive for a $35K MSRP vehicle.

I wouldn't put $5500 down on a lease. That lowers the payment, but the total cost of the lease is the same.

And, that up front money would be lost if the car is stolen or totaled.

I agree that your deal is not the best. My wife wants an Odyssey, and what I’ve found is that Honda doesn’t do much to support leasing, since most customers finance a purchase, since Honda’s last forever. Hence, the Odyssey leases terribly for a car that price. If you want great deals for a vehicle that size there are other cars to look at. But in regards to your Odyssey quote, I don’t think you received a very competitive discount. Unfortunately, unless you live in an area with lots of dealers with large amount of inventory to compete for your business, there isn’t as much incentive to discount a popular vehicle. Your discount off MSRP is only about 6.5%. If you look a few posts above, a forum member in Omaha got a discount of about 12.5% off MSRP. That makes a big difference in your monthly payment. So my advice is to demand a bigger discount, or find a more competitive market near you. Always negotiate the sales price (discount off MSRP) first, and don’t tell them you have a trade or want to lease. Because a dealer will try to sell you a car based on your target monthly payment, and they’ll use all of the lease numbers to confuse you and hide their profit. And I agree with the admin that you never want to put $5500 down on a lease. I would only pay for your plates and fees upfront. That $5500 does not go towards equity like it would in a purchase. That $5500 just reduces the amount you pay over the period of your lease. You lose that $5500 if your leased vehicle is totaled. So if you factornin your downpayment of $5500, you’re actually paying $499 per month on a $35,000 car, which is insane.
So, if you were able to get 12.5% off MSRP, with zero money down, you’d be around $453 per month. Even at 10% off MSRP, you’d be at $482 per month with zero down. And that $5500 would be back in your pocket. I used the lease calculator at Leasehackr.
If you really like your payment at $345, I would look at another vehicle that leases better. Visit the Leasehackr forum, and you will find examples of better deals. But the lease information here on Edmunds is incredibly valuable, so that you are empowered with knowledge of what goes into a lease, so a dealer can’t take advantage of you.

I'll agree with about 99% of what was posted.

I would be up front about the desire to lease - there are different incentives for lease vs. purchase, and the dealer may quote you a price they can't honor once you 'spring' on them the fact that you are leasing.

Continue to negotiate the selling price, not the payment.

I would suggest you ask for the adjusted CAP cost, as well.

It should be in the neighborhood of $36,250, and includes all taxes and fees, since you are doing a sign and drive.

Pay close attention to the specific line items that take you from the selling price to the CAP cost - that's where dealers can slip in junk charges.
