This is easy to see: $4.00 CA vs $1.90 TX per gal.
California is an outstanding example where fuel taxes are “REpurposed “ for other than “logical/promised, etc” road and transportation uses. I’ve never followed WA fuel/ transportation fund allocations, so I really can’t speak to it.
So even if I/we could get autobahn speeds here, the MB GLK 250 BT tops out @ what 130 mph? I’ve had MB GLK 250 BT up around 120 mph on Interstate Highway 5. 👍 Cruising at 90 mph gets deceptively similar mpg to terrible commute traffic.
An easy software update can overcome those speed governors And yes, up to a certain point, high speed doesn't destroy mileage, especially in a very efficient engine like the 4cyl BT.
Tire life is extremely hard to measure, as I have done no A/B testing. So for example, it is becoming clear @ 75,000 miles, the MB GLK 250 BT will soon need new tires. Things are a tad confusing, as the OEM tires have poor to bad ratings and also are run flats. So modest expectations are longer tire life (>85,000 miles, $.01176 cents per mile driven) and even better mpg😎 (> than avg 37 mpg, or 39 mpg) Could I have gotten better results on German roads? While I’d like to think so, I really couldn’t quantify it. But for sure costs will be way higher (fuel/car, etc. costs).
Its is up and down the food chain also. I mean how much cheaper than Saudi Arabia’s $2.00 USD per bbl can you get, pulling it out of the ground? Fuel in SA is .48 cents per gal. Yet, I was reading that Saudi Arabia needs approximately $90 USD per bbl (?) to fund it’s country's policies! So any less obviously can create “angst”.
Regarding top quality roads, the idiot Randians who have stolen so much power over the past couple decades would call it "socialism", and their cult of morons would agree.
Speaking of tires, if I buy out the E250, I am going to switch to conventional tires.

RUG $3.35, PUG $3.65, ULSD $3.89, local. 👎.7382 per gal taxes. Per gal diesel is more, but very few articles will make the state cop to it.
...”Better quality roads of virtually every type, some of the best transit in the world (subsidized by those taxes), those alone explain the costs. We pay little, and get little”...
While I wish it true, a resounding NO to the above hypothesis.
(By all rights, we should be paying less and getting more.)
So, it looks like CA is paying app 86% more in taxes, etc.”

https://www.mercurynews.com/2018/09/04/gas-tax-what-you-actually-pay-on-each-gallon-of-gas/
The CA roads that the MB GLK 250 BT commutes on, (18,000 miles) not only has some of the highest fuel taxes, but has some of the most horrid roads ! (in the nation)
The MB GLK 350 (PUG gasoline version same model) would probably get way less (20/21 mpg vs 36/37 mpg) on the same commute. Cost would be app 61% MORE (per mile driven) than ULSD, even as the fuel is more $3.65 PUG. Needless to say, the sound of one hand clapping indicates 71.4% more fuel (857 gal/500 gal) would be used each year.
GO DIESEL!
Because we have gotten used to conditions, it’s really hard to easy to imagine that almost anywhere we would want to buy fuel/commute would be cheaper/to having better roads.
Merry Christmas everyone and a Happy New Year !
Gas Prices Are Falling, but Refiners Keep Making More

...”Producing one barrel of gasoline yields about $1.50 as of Friday, compared with an average $12 going back to 2012. In contrast, diesel margins were recently at $19 a barrel, compared with a longer-term average of $15.
”People are running for distillate and storing the gasoline,” said Greg Garland, chief executive of Phillips 66 , in November.”...
So this is both good/bad news for: refiners-slightly more profit. RUG/PUG users have cheaper per gal, growing inventories, & ULSD users experience cheaper per mile driven costs. So for my CA current prices, is it interesting what a $.54 /$.33 per gal difference MORE for ULSD making ULSD cheaper per mile driven over PUG.

Rumor is my truck is supposed to makes an additional 25 HP using 93 so I thought I'd try it out.

With new pipelines opening up from the Permian, and with world economy on the skids, I'd be VERY surprised if gas took a big jump. But I've been surprised before.
And you mean $3/gallon in places now seeing it at/under $2, right? California would be very happy with $3 gas in May, I bet.

The other day at one of the cheaper stations saw RUG for under $2.30 a gallon.
Drove by a station today where the sign says just under $2.80.
It was in a long term construction zone, so maybe they are still selling an older fill up.
(So by mathematics) So a barrel oil (20 gallons of gasoline/10 gal of diesel) really is 22 gals of “gasoline fuel” products.
So not only are we consuming 10% less gasoline ( of a bbl of oil) , we are also going 6% less in yearly mileage.

PUG: $2.62

Very soon will probably take a hit to the mpg (given all things similar) with new tires (@ app 76,000 miles) & alignment. But then again, since the OEM tires are run flats, the new NON run flats may not experience much of a difference.
Do you really think the cost per kWh kilowatt hour will go down ?
Make mine diesel !
RUG holding steady in the low $2.30 range.
$2.859, Down 6 cent from last fill up 3 weeks ago.
No way. I pride myself on getting to work no matter what.
The only time I didn't make it to work was when I was too tired after shoveling the snow for 7 hours to clear everything.

...and then it rained and turned the driveway to glazed ice. Wait, that would be the Midwest
Given a series of factors, the estimate: app 108,000 -119,000 miles on this new set. MPG should be similar. 36-37.5., to hopefully slightly more 36.5 to 38.5 mpg (NON run flat)
