Octane ratings are 87, 89, 93. I believe in Colorado, they are each a couple of points lower?

I haven’t dug into the chemistry of RUG/MGUG/PUG 90/85, but I have read in passing, that ethanol does most of the major work of “octane boost” in today’s E10/E15 +UP fuels. So all things being equal, the greater % of ethanol or E10/E15 +UP, lesser mpg is one known /expected byproduct. Higher $$’s prices are another. Higher costs per mile driven (CPMD) round this out.

I have used the MB GLK 350 (21 mpg PUG) / 250 BT (37 mpg ULSD) contrast/example. Most folks snore/sneeze @ 76.2% better mpg. So, the guess is the E15 PUG version will probably lose approximately 1 mpg (over E10) to =20 MPG.

So over 18,000 miles commute per year, it might beg the question: why use ULSD 486.5 gal, when PUG 900 gal will do? 🤪

Very small TMI’s on the MB GLK 250 PT.

Of the oil specification MB 229.52, https://bevo.mercedes-benz.com/bevolisten/229.52_en.html#close
    https://mobiloil.com/en/motor-oils/mobil-1/mobil-1-esp

I have been using 5w 40. (older 229.52 specification) The newer specification includes 3, 0w-30, 5w-30, 0w-40 weights. The local MB dealer put in 5w30, so I can expect a little better mpg. (.5 mpg @ best)

Decided after 5 + yrs to change the windshield wipers.

Naturally a wash increases mpg, hp/torque.😂😜

    ULSD $3.57, PUG $ 3.39, RUG $ 3.09

I’ve read that anywhere from 8 to 11% of the PVF (passenger vehicle fleet) is made to run PUG.

Nice sunny day here, several degrees above normal. Weather =/= climate, even if a tweeting twerp who personifies the worst stereotypes of his generation thinks otherwise.

Cheaper gasoline/ULSD while posting profits! Imagine that ! https://www.yahoo.com/finance/news/exxon-bounces-back-crude-oil-130446928.html

    Local CA

    ULSD $3.69, PUG $3.39, RUG $3.09

Given the recent GLK 250 BT changes: new tires, alignment, lighter viscosity oil (5w40 to 5w30) & ultra heavy traffic, there are almost ZERO changes to the 37 mpg to report (561 gal/15 gal=37.4) ???

So this latest commute mpg shift (from 36 to 37.4) might save about 3.74 % (18.7 gal) of ULSD over 18,000 miles.
  • explorerx4explorerx4 Member Posts: 19,256
    @ruking1,
I've been meaning to ask, where did you come up with 21 mpg for the GLK on PUG?
18k miles is a lot, at least over the average, so I would expect it to be higher.

Yes. It’s (18,000 miles per year) over the 11,000 miles to 14,000 miles, US averages.

Over the years, we’ve been working hard dropping down vehicles, to (current) one CUV & slashing yearly mileage. We got lucky when VW bought back two vehicles. VW A, in effect paid us a slight premium, triggering no tax ramifications since they were (C/A) lawsuit settlements. Shopping mileage is mitigated somewhat by “Amazon-like” home delivery. I’ve also run business from home/s since 2001. Significant other (1st wife) works remote, up to 3x per week.

While most folks don’t use diesels, some mpg savings are due to “no fuel draw during decelerations” during both downshifting and/or letting off the throttle. Brake pads were measured & it seems getting to 155,000 miles on these brake pads will probably not be an issue (8 mm fronts/9 mm rears- 2mm= needs changing)
  • ruking1ruking1 Member Posts: 19,826
Glad the new tires 500 miles break in mileage rolled on without incident.

    RUG $ 3.09, PUG $ 3.39,

    ULSD $ 3.55.

I’m guessing no real surprises to the next low fuel warning lamp ( 563 miles + @ 37.5 mpg, 14 MB GLK 250 BT) tankful’s mpg.
  • explorerx4explorerx4 Member Posts: 19,256
I think just about every light vehicle made in the last few shuts off the fuel shortly after you release the gas pedal when I motion.
A couple of my vehicles have stop/start. It makes a noticeable improvement in overall mileage.

I read a brief article that the Venezuela freeze may start impacting some refineries that are geared to heavy crude.
  • texasestexases Member Posts: 10,685
Yep, all the new 'light' oil shale production isn't a good fit for US refineries - lot of them got set up for heavier crudes.

The local unions and the local city/s that has hosted the local refinery/s since before WW2, put the kaibosh on a $2 B? (as I remember, & union labor upgrades) Chevron’s upgrade to process WTI-like (lighter) oil. Since the lighter oils have less sulfur and less pollutants, the blocking of the upgrade was/remains inexplicable.

It would appear that locals to federal government care more for regimes like Saudi Arabia, Venezuela, etc.,than USA based oil ventures.

Your guess’ are truly as good as mine.

I was following it from afar so to speak & made bets against it happening, even as I believed it GOOD in most ways. I truly hope that Chevron et al. had that hedged. I’m sure Chevron, vendors & unions lost MILLIONS of $$’s in the planning & marketing, etc., portions.

We’ve taken some heavy suspension shocks, but (knock on wood) no body damage. Of course, we are treated to windshield dings & the occasional nail in the tires damage.

I’m not sure I understand given: winter conditions, (omg climate change doesn’t let/allow 125% of snow pack fo the year, in mid winter? Evidently mudder nature didn’t get the memo) choking commuting, 37.2 mpg (569 miles/15.3 gal) @ app 1,000 miles on new tires & oil change. We don’t add the DEF, (2.5 gal to 5gal +) till low lamp lights. Long story short, all these factors tend to shorten mpg figures.

The new tires are much smoother & quieter.. They seem to be breaking in quite nicely. My guess is app .5 mpg better than the old tires. This is significant, as the old tires with less tread yield better grip & app 1.5 mpg better than when it was new. So 37.5 mpg seems to be the new normal low @ app 1,150 miles on the new rubber. I really can’t explain it. I was expecting less mpg.
