Sometimes parents with money are the dumbest ones of all. More than one C8 will go to a teen, who will have an incident with a tree or a pole or another car, and end up being bailed out of accountability.

Speaking of the C8, it's the first new Corvette I have even a passing interest in, in my adult life. Most of the ones I've liked have been older than me.

I remember one teenager at my high school got a nice new yellow Corvette.
Totaled it in the first week.
I never heard what they gave him after that....I don't think he had a car after.

I don’t know of one parent that bought their kid a car when I was a teen. We had cars, but we all bought them ourselves. If someone had a parent that bought them a car, we’d all want to be adopted by that parent.

A long time friend had talked about car for his new driver son. I said get him a few years old Optima or Sonata or an older Impala or leSabre/Park Avenue, Crown Vic. He would have an accident. They all had airbags. Nope.

Kid had friends who were a Mustang club. Got him a 2-year old Mustang in grabber blue. Kid had some settlement money in his name from lawsuit against school.

Not many months and lots of modifications that the peer group thought needed on an already fast car, and car is totaled on snowy roads--new driver, summer tires, snow. What could go wrong.

I remind friend that I was right. He agrees.

I'm sure this is everywhere, but locally I see some very young people who are recent arrivals from overseas driving some very fast and expensive cars. You occasionally hear of incidents where they get written off, and even more occasionally, where one of them is badly injured or worse.

A year or so back there was a moment where our idiot Prime Minister made some ill-advised remarks that offended the Saudi govt and they in turn announced they would be recalling all of their foreign nationals attending university here, which was a significant number. All of their personal possessions needed to be liquidated here if they could not take them with them. One of the local mosques organized a day for them to sell their vehicles, and it had a robust turnout. Not very many beaters there, it looked like a used car lot at a BMW or M-B dealer. Of course eventually all was smoothed over and most of those folks stayed here and continued their educations. Probably did wonders for the local BMW and M-B stores when they had to replace their rides.

I went to high school in at least semi-podunk (one high school in town, graduating class under 200), and cars were a normal thing due to minimal transit. Several kids had new cars - I remember a Civic, Toyota 4x4 (created some jealous snickers, but the driver was a good kid and I think the truck was more his dad's idea), then-new bugeye Integra (that one created some snickers too), Cavalier, late run VW Fox, etc. Some had nicer late model cars, too, some now-obscure things like a 4WS Prelude or NX2000. Most of my driving to school was in a Tempo (which I kept pristine, and people thought it was much newer) or a 66 Galaxie. Not much high speed shenanigans to be had in either, although the latter could burn rubber.

I agree with your thinking. If I was blessed with a kid and helped them get a car, it would be an older domestic barge or an old MB - safe, not much fun, can't really mod it, generally solid if you find the right car. And still might be kind of interesting or stylish.

I've always had somewhat offbeat tastes, and didn't pine for a Mustang or 4x4 when I was in high school.

My middle son had a 10-year old Buick LeSabre as his second car (he totaled the first one, another old car he paid for himself. Took awhile to save up again). Great first (or second) car for a teen. Too bad they stopped making them.

89 Grand Marquis bought for a song from my Grandfather. I ran it for about 2 years to 100K. I traded it after I drove it with a failed TV bushing causing the trans to slip in 4th gear.

Replaced it with a 93 Taurus LX 3.8.... in hindsight I should have just fixed the trans. The 93 was a turd.

I bought for $100 a well worn 62 Ford Galaxie 2dr sedan, 292 V8, am radio, heater, one speed wipers, no washers, door mirrors, seat belts, back up lights, metal dash, non power brakes, manual steering, 3 speed non synchro 1st gear manual transmission, great sounding horn. It drove sloppily, always started, and was ugly. It was mine, provided independence and am glad to be alive!

I am sure I have mentioned my mom had a 93 Taurus, 3.8 - I think it crapped out around 90K miles. She was upset as she had it for over 10 years, and she kind of bonded with it I guess, but she then moved to Toyota and has remained there.

I didn't think the 62s came as a 2-door sedan. They must have been fairly rare, but, there are pictures of some around.

My first real car after my 59 Sprite that only lasted a little while was a 62 Comet 4 door sedan 3 on the tree. No joy in Mudville driving that car.

It looked almost like this....it was red.

The first car that I actually owned was a 69 Plymouth Satellite with 318 motor. Ran it to 160k miles through sheer force of will. Looked like this minus the vinyl top:

It would do over 100 more than any car I’ve owned since.

Started driving the family hand-me-down 1950 Chevy Styleline Deluxe coupe. It was a primitive beast but it was "free" to us kids.

1971 Mustang Sportsroof was the first car of my own but uncomfortable for anything but short drives. Nose heavy and serious learning curve on wet roads with a 16 y/o at the wheel. On a nice day with dry well maintained roads it was pretty fun to drive for a while. But I parked it at other times to avoid the hassle of driving it.

And then I reflected back to happy times in my driver's ed car: 1975 Ford Elite. That's what I really wanted.

But what I could afford was a 1968 Torino GT 390. My first "keeper" which I bought at 17 and kept for 2 years after high school. Big and comfy. Big power and bigger appetite for Sunoco 260.

By 1979 I bought a 1971 Ford LTD. 351 Windsor. Regular gas. A/C. Good stereo. Bad Girls. Good times.

I remember when I was in high school, a friend got his drivers license and shortly thereafter began driving to and from school in a new '71 Mustang Mach 1 fastback, green on green. While the Mach 1 was by then more of a show than go type of car (I think this one had a 351 under the hood) it still had plenty of potential for a new driver to find trouble. Glen's dad was a local cartoonist who did both editorial and commercial work so apparently was doing well at the time. I recall getting a ride home with him a few times and was struck by how hard it was to see out of - I suppose the modern-day Camaro of its time in terms of lack of visibility.

Growing up had neighbors that owned a 62 Ford 2dr sedan and also a 65 version of the same thing. The cheapy 65's had a circular taillight encased in fake chrome instead of a full rear taillight lens.

The plain jane light blue Galaxie is what I had, except mine had been repainted from Ming Green, a turquoise shade to a darker green. On a plus, it had full wheel covers and whitewalls to dress it up a bit. Note, no door mirror on this one, too.

I think those of us that owned an early model Chevy Vega, like my 71 Vega GT, or early model Ford Pinto feel the same as you do about the Neon. Bean counters kept them cheap and short lived.

First car, as a shiny new college grad, used '78 VW Scirocco. White, black cloth interior with Recaro seats and amber fog lights below the bumper. Not much giddyup, but light, tossable and fun! And, no AC...lesson learned. Loved that car for two years, but rust, which never sleeps, loved it more.

Sold it to a HS kid who totaled it 6 months later, I actually saw it (well the 2/3 of it that was left) at a body shop on my way to a party. RIP.

I should have gotten a shore house back when we first started going. And it was still theoretically affordable.

at this point, at minimum, I need to find a lot cheaper town than SH to look at!
