Hi. I am looking for a second car. I am currently driving an Infiniti G37x. I would want a pre-owned car thats reliable, has low depreciation, is fun to drive and gives a luxurious feel. I am planning to change it in ~3 years so I want to keep a high resale value. I am considering two, not sure which should I pick:

    2014 Lexus IS 250 with 70k miles - $15000

    2015 Infiniti Q50 with 90k miles - $13000

Which one is a better deal?

Good deal on the Q50. GREAT deal on the is250. Better make sure its clean and good history.

Lexus will hold its value better. Coupled with being a better deal right now, it will definitely cost you less in depreciation over the next 3 yrs.

Big difference in power between the two. I agree w/Q that the Lexus will be cheaper to own, but the Infiniti is going to be the better driving car IMO

Thank you very much. I purchased the Infiniti Q50 because the seller had all maintenance reports from Infiniti dealership. Its in really perfect condition, even though the mileage is a bit on the higher side.

I am also replacing my G37x for that Lexus IS250 because my wife likes it.

Now I have another question and I would appreciate your help - again.

I leased a 2016 Ram 1500 Big Horn Crew Cab for my dad and the lease is ending in a month. I negotiated a steal price at that time, I tried to match it on a new lease but couldn't even come close. The contracted mileage is exceeded by 10k so thats around $2500 fee. I am considering a buyout of that car if its worth it.

The lease was $317/mo with 12k mileage, it is equipped with lots of extras such as bigger touch screen, premium sound system, backup camera, parking sensors, premium heated cloth seats, chrome accents, navigation, truck bed cover.

The buyout price is $25600. I tried to negotiate it but the bank did not even want to hear about it. Is it a good price?

    Should I:
    • buy it out,
    • lease another vehicle
    • pay the mileage fee and return the vehicle and buy a pre-owned Ram elsewhere
  • qbrozenqbrozen Member Posts: 32,889
    I’m guessing its a 5.7L 4x4?
The buyout is pretty good. You might get like $24k or 24.5k from a carvana/vroom, so you might want to look into that and pay half the penalty than if you turned it in (don’t forget dispo fee and wear and tear, so could be 1/3 by selling it).

Negotiate a lease for a new FCA vehicle if that’s what he wants. See if the bank (not the dealer, they’ll just try to roll it into the new lease) will eat a portion of the mileage. Either way, turn it in and walk away. Don’t buy out the lease.

For a friend: 2011 Honda CRV EX, AWD, 130K miles, Boston area. Vehicle looks nice, light green w/tan lthr, I can't see any cosmetic problems. What's it worth, PP, or trade-in?

I was saying; this might be the optimal time to sell it, & buy something new, but I don't really know. Just curious, thanks....

    OK, a little help.

My cousin is looking for a new (to her) car. She was torn between three models:

    Fiat 500 Cabrio
    VW Beetle Cabrio
    Hyundai Kona

She's finally landed on the Kona, and found this one at a dealer sort of close to her:

    https://www.jtskiarockhill.com/vehicles/2018-hyundai-kona-sel-97222a-km8k2caa6ju152253

    Fair price?

@sda, how close is this dealer to you? My cousin lives just outside of Athens, GA.

Nice looking Kona. No clue how over priced it is, but definitely at 18K it is.

if those had been out when I got the Elantra, I probably would have ended up with one of them instead.

She's having a bit of a mid life crisis, and couldn't decide if she wanted a convertible. She's had a 500 already - don't know what her ownership experience was with it.

First order of business for her, after getting the car, is to relocate to California.

Depends on the details. If, for example, she is planning on financing for 60 mos, then getting a vehicle 1 yr newer and financing for 72 mos for quite possibly a lower payment makes sense to me.

That isn’t too high considering it could be over 4 years old. Our 16 has 72,000 miles on it. And we have had it 3.5 years.

    An s6 could be different.

    Hey all,

I'm 20, living in the Northeast, looking to buy my first car. Disclaimer: I know very little about cars.

A nearby Subaru dealership has a 2016 Legacy 2.5i Premium listed for $11,995. KBB has the car at $12,411-16,278. Carfax lists one owner. One accident reported in 2017, rear impact. The rear of the car looks find from the eye test. Tires replaced at 80k miles.

I understand that 100k miles is a lot of miles for a car that's only three years old. Firstly, is this a good deal for that price? Secondly, if I drive 10-15k miles a year, could I realistically expect this vehicle to last 5 or so years with minimal repairs/maintenance?

I'm really liking this car and it fits within my budget (I'm financing). I want a nice-ish car with nice-ish features and a peace of mind driving it. If this ain't it, what car should I be looking for? AWD is preferred since I am new to driving in the Northeast.

I appreciate any and all advice! Thank you in advance.
  • qbrozenqbrozen Member Posts: 32,889
yes, $12k is a good price for that car. But there are definitely others out there that are more reliable with fewer miles for that kind of money.

A 2016 Fusion SE AWD with half the miles, for example, or 2015 Q40 with 70k miles.

When driving 15k/yr, I think it is usually better to get lower miles vs more recent production, within reason.

That's a HUGE amount of miles for a 3 or 4 y.o. car. That can't be the only used Subaru in your area. You need to look at a lot more cars, & do more research. IMO

Sounds like a good deal. The highly optioned ones seem to take a big hit once they’re considered used. Someone buying a basic work truck may not care as much whether it has a couple thousand miles or not.

I just think you should be either looking at used cars with way less miles (& no accident reports), or one of the new (least expensive) Japanese cars. Are you financing? Might be worth checking out buying something new.

At this stage of life, cheap and reliable is the best bet. Personally, I would not mind an accident history as long as it reflects in the price I pay. Fewest miles possible for the best price possible. And, maintenance history (e.g., available records, regular service, etc.) counts for a lot for me. I'll pay extra for that peace of mind.

I received a fair bit of flack for buying a roll-over Subaru Forester about 4.5 years ago. $3,500. Excellent buy. I would do it again in a heartbeat.
