I don't care for those mid-70s Eldos and that one is no exception. But I have never seen one with black upholstery and red carpets/door trim. Wonder if that was factory.

Someone should snap up that '88 Corolla GT-S. Those are hot and getting hotter. That car could bring serious money if it is as good as it looks, and it is a hoot to drive in any event. I almost bought one new.

Not as crazy about that Shelby as some perhaps. The basic car it was based upon was not good.

Similar to one a couple of model years newer that my buddy Steve had. His had the 4.9 and I think was a '91 model. This one is the last year for the unloved HT4100 V8.

What good engines has Cadillac made since 1980 or so? So many of them have been troublesome.
  • tjc78tjc78 Member Posts: 15,908
The Northstar was at least well received and powerful for it's size. It wasn't until later that the problems and serviceability surfaced.

Otherwise, they really haven't had many of their own other than the HT line (4,1, 4.4 and 4.9). I think by the time the 4.9 came out it was pretty reliable.

All the 80s RWD's (after the 4100) got Olds 307s, then Chevy 305s and 350s

I still like the 1977 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz with (what looks like) original AM/FM stereo CB radio and space saver(!) spare tire. I found one on youtube last year being celebrated for its weirdness, being a 2-door personal luxury car with 4 interior door release handles!

The 3.6 v6 has been good from what I know. It was derivative of the HFV6 originally developed jointly by Caddy and Holden, though, so it just depends on what you want to qualify as a Caddy engine.

I tried to use a "Cadillac" in a speeding defense case. There was an obviously old and slow man in front of me driving a Caddy, I couldn't have been speeding your Honor, as I was staying behind them and didn't pass on the right.

It didn't work, Orange County was the first Courthouse I saw with drive up and walk-up paying windows.

I’ve had three 3.6s. I like that engine a lot. It’s no Toyota 2GR but a solid engine that makes a good bit of power.

My 2012 puked a crankshaft seal early on (good thing I have a black top driveway) but otherwise they have been perfect since.

Funny thing is, alot of peeps would complain and jump up and down that a GM engine did that, yet it is a common failure point for subaru’s EJ25 but that’s still deemed reliable.

Eh, that EJ25 with the head gaskets every 100k? Not judged reliable by this Forester owner.

And doesn't the Caddy 3.6 have problems with timing chain guides?

I could only find info on the chain itself, and it seems that is attributable to the longer oil change intervals. Good oil with more frequent changes could stave off the problem. This was discovered back in 2011 or so and GM was reprogramming customer cars to shorten OBC oil life intervals. I’d imagine vehicles produced in later years already had this adjustment built in.

And, on the topic of maintenance and/or repairs.... I have a wheel bearing going bad (quickly) on the Q7: Front left. Seems crazy to me. Only 88,000 miles. Never had a wheel bearing go bad, except on my 1969 Econoline van, which was more understandable in that case because the bearings had around 200,000 miles on them and had been... abused... much in their lives. Even so, the wheel bearings in the other three corners are still original. Fifty years, and at least 200,000 miles.... and all good. /sigh

The long timing between oil changes (up to 15000 miles) that the oil life monitor system was programmed for on the early engines proved too much for the engine oil and caused premature wear of the timing chains and associated components. The OLM was recalled for a reprogramming to shorten the interval somewhat, GM moved to Dexos oil (originally partial synthetic, now full synthetic, probably important for these early engines especially) and several improved chain designs were introduced into production.

There were several generations of this engine that were produced subsequently that (eventually) fully addressed those early issues, with the latest being gen 4 which has significant revisions including bore spacing, a redesigned cooling system and variable valve timing. This LGX code engine is what I have in my ATS, producing 335hp. Great engine.

On all 3 of the 3.6s I've owned the OLM promptly reaches 10% at about 4700 miles... 0% at around 5200 or so.

Lots of modern engines have that problem. Heck even Ford's 4.6 which everyone knows to be as close to bulletproof as there is suffers from it.

My 04 MGM was just starting to have a little clatter from them at 100K. I guarantee the new owner is still running it just fine. They go like that forever.

they also had an SC300 manual back then.

not long ago I saw a video of some guy that buys hoopties and tries to fix them up cheap, and he bought an ES300 stick that had been sitting, for some small amount ($100?) Turned out good, for cheap.

Those are the ones that jumped out at me. The Caddy is really nice and would have the 425 still in '77. I had no memory of the 4.3 diesel being offered in those FWD 98s. Must have taken some real determination by GM to do that given they had 7 years worth of bad experience with the diesels by then. The Saab needs to go to a like-minded fan of the marque.

The "Cornet" looks like it has a bad case of clearcoat peeling and the interior is awful. So, new paint, new interior just to get it to look like it is supposed to. Pass.

That is a very nice truck especially considering the year. I think it is a good buy. Amazed at the number of grandpa trucks out there.

The pair of Lincoln Marks are interesting, both about the same price, both not miled up. Maybe that says something about them? I dunno if the '76 or '79 generation is preferred. I like the colors on both.

The '66 DeVille seems to have avoided the worst that so many of those kind of cars have to endure. The wheels are an easy fix at least.

The Silverado needs a seat transplant as many of that generation do. If you get lucky you might find one in matching upholstery but even if not it wouldn't be a huge deal and you might be able to source a better seat from a later model that bolts right in. That cargo box style wasn't very common.

The 4Runner is very uncommon in most places as they were terrible rusters not just up here but almost anywhere. If that one is solid it would be a good buy.

Pretty sure that most would prefer the angular styling and interior to the V. 78 is probably the best year as you could still order up the 460.

I like the 79s as the designer editions had great colors and the Collector's series in white over blue is just about perfect for me.

I've driven both the 460 powered cars and the 400s.... not much difference both pretty slow. I'd be willing to bet my 79 with true duals and slightly advanced timing was as quick as a stock single exhaust 460.

The BaT Supra is drawing interest because of its originality - very rare now to see one that hasn't been modded to an inch of its life - and its very well-preserved condition. I can see someone giving 6 figures easily.

Lots of overly optimistic owners in this batch otherwise. The Aspen, the Plymouth, the Firebird, even the Riv (something about it just doesn't seem right to me). The FX16 intrigues me - assuming you can get the parts it says it needs, it would be a fun project. The '93 Lincoln seems too cheap for the pictures shown, maybe its a deal.
