$75 is a pretty good payout for one of those suits, which seem to be a new growth area for a segment of the law profession. I have gotten a few but they were in the range of $15 to $25 each.

I have never received a pay out for a class action law suit. My brother-in-law came over to do a small plumbing repair for us. It was $20, I was going to give him $16.50 and then endorse my check from the air pump company for $3.50 to him....so, I wouldn't have to bother taking it to the bank. B)

For you guys who are old enough for medicare, do you go with regular medicare or one of the Advantage Plans? I have tried them both, and fortunately never had to use for anything serious. For the last few years I have stuck with regular medicare because I don't like having my choice of doctors, etc. limited, and maybe have someone who is not approved by the plan perform some service, etc.. Also it seems it might be a problem if you are traveling and have a medical issue, to be sure if a hospital or doctor is in the plan.

I don’t know why but I found this fascinating. Don’t tell Skynet.

Netflix has an anthology series called "Black Mirror" which had an episode in which the world was full of machines very similar to those called dogs whose only mission was to hunt down and kill humans.

@houdini2, in general you are better off not going with a MCAdvantage plan. You may have less paperwork but, as you alluded to, you will have a limitation of choices and may require prior authorizations more often. Anyway, something for you to check out.

Oh man... what a weekend. Took on painting our living room/dining room.

Windows were stained so they all had to be sanded down and took three coats to get right. All the trim etc etc.

Running to Home Depot now to get 2 of the 7 blinds I need as I don’t feel like finishing the paint on the bow window tonight. I would get all 7 but don’t think I’d be back in time (they have to be cut) for the Eagles game on my new 65” Sony.

My 14 year old Sony gave up the ghost. It’s a low end Sony but it is still leaps and bounds over what I had.

If I didn’t have two young ones with an appetite to hurt TVs I would love the set that @roadburner posted.

oh man, my daughter's house had all stained trim. window sills, door casing, bay windows, and baseboards. Baseboards were replaced by the floor refinishing guy. Daughter has been paining the rest when she has time. just did the big LR bay window. Looks so much better. still more to do, but she is getting closer!

went up to the outdoor fancy mall yesterday (LL bean store is there). in the back there is a Tesla charging bank. I think there were 12 units. mid-afternoon, about 8 were full. And most that I could see, the driver was just sitting in the car. Still seems like an odd lifestyle to me.

I still have stained baseboards in the living room, last of those remaining. They are 1950s Douglas Fir which I know a lot of people love but I'm not crazy about it. Dunno if I will go to the trouble of sanding/priming/painting or just having them ripped out and replaced. I know where I have done that elsewhere in the house the result looks much more up to date.

we were going to paint them, but after really looking close, they were mostly beat to crap and would have taken way too much work to get even OK looking to paint. It was so much easier to just pry them off (though that was not actually easy!) and have clean, straight new ones on. and for the pittance the floor guy charged to do it, a no brainer.

And the next item you buy will have that cost built into it. There’s no free lunch and no free tv when you buy a car.

My son takes thyroid medicine. Without it he’d die. We got a solicitation from a lawyer who was suing the company who developed this life saving medicine because they didn’t voluntarily tell every patient that generic medicine was just as good.

All I could think about is what if fear of lawsuits prevented some other drug company from introducing the next life saving drug. I wanted no part of it.

Interesting that you ask. I had Cigna as an HMO for 30+ years prior to my retirement from a huge corporation in July of last year. When I "retired" I signed up for Medicare. I went with Cigna again with what they call Cigna-HealthSpring Preferred and it's far exceeded my expectations. Up until about a year ago, the only time I went to the Dr. was for my yearly physical & update for by BP medicine, plus the odd colonoscopy.

Well, all that changed in December of last year. I ended up being referred to a urologist, their CT scan outsourced facility, staying overnight in a first-rate hospital for exploratory surgery (non-invasive) to evaluate bladder or kidney cancer (negative, BTW). That was followed with a long term relationship with a kidney specialist. Then, for fun, I had a serious ankle sprain on my drive to AK last summer, so visited a podiatrist. That was followed by a trip to the ER a month or so ago for what turned out to be pulmonary embolisms which came from a clot in the leg with the sprained ankle. I had a follow-up with my Cigna Dr. (who I've had for the past 15+ years) and then a visit to a pulmonologist last week. None of this has cost me more than a $30 co-pay, and my routine BP and cholesterol meds don't cost me anything.

I couldn't be happier, though it appears I could certainly be healthier. YMMV

Well, it's supposed to snow 6-8" up at the cabin later this week, so it was time to put on the winter tire/wheels. Just finished, and it's surprisingly satisfying, considering how minor a job it is. Time was I completely rebuilt 240-Z engines and installed Chevy short blocks. Oh well, I wasn't 71 then.

I was talking to a guy at pickleball who drove his new Tesla from Tampa to Boston and back. I asked about the charging. He said they found it OK, every 3 hours they would use the GPS to find a charging station coffee shop place. They would plug the car in for 1/2 an hour, have a snack, then continue the trip. They thought it was fine....forced them to stop regularly.

stopping every 3 hours on a long trip like that would drive me nuts I think. Plus I would not handle range anxiety well!

i think the acid test for going full electric is how you gas up. if you start planning it when you drop below 1/2 a tank, and get the sweats when you drop below 1/4, not for you. If you don't think about it until the light goes on, then try to go as long as possible until RTE is in the single digits, then go for it!

The windows were a bear. I have the bow window all sanded and prepped, just need to paint it. The other windows I ended up doing two coats of Zinsser 123 and a coat of semi-gloss. They came out really nice. I wonder if I should have done two coats of the semi-gloss instead.

As for paint. I usually use Behr from Home Depot as it is typically highly rated. This time I used Benjamin Moore from the paint store (I'm sure you know the place on the WHP). Wow, expensive stuff ($40, gallon) but really nice to work with.

I miss Finnaren and Haley, that was the best paint you could get and made in PA. They were bought by BM years ago.

Just went through an attempt by someone to fraudulently use my credit card number to charge a visit to a spa for a manicure and pedicure in New Hampshire.

I received a text alert from my credit card company asking if a charge for $132.00 was made by me. I had to respond by texting back YES or NO. I texted back NO. I immediately received another text telling me that my credit card account had been closed and that I was to call a telephone number. I also received, at the same time, an email advising me to make a call to that same phone number. Rather than call the number provided, I called the phone number on the credit card and selected the Fraud Option. I spoke with a representative of the Fraud Team and they confirmed the texts and email I had received. They had declined the charge based upon the fact that the security code was provided incorrectly. So I didn't have to deal with that issue of trying to get the charge removed. One of the questions they asked me was if I had the credit card in my possession. I responded that I did and they wanted me to give them the credit card number, expiration date and security code on the back of the car. They also asked me several security questions.

I just received my new credit card (they UPS'ed it overnight) and had to start notifying all my insurance companies, mobile phone, cable TV and internet companies that the credit card they had on file for auto-pay had to be updated. I just finished with the last company - 8 in total - to put the new credit card on file. I also had to notify Trans-Union, Equifax and Experian of the fraud attempt and they each placed a fraud alert on my credit bureau file.

This stuff is so time consuming and so nerve racking. I just hope I got all the auto-pay companies contacted. I even had to contact my pharmacy to have them change the credit card on my account for "quick-pay". This type of fraud is so rampant and frustrating. It happened to me on my AMEX card two years ago when someone tried to charge $85.00 in gas at a Shell Station 12 miles from me. Lucky for me that the card reader on the pump picked up the fact that it was a bogus credit card.

I wonder how much it costs these credit card companies to maintain the types of security and fraud prevention departments. It must cost them a fortune in fraudulant card usage. These security patches on the front of the new cards seems to have reduced some of the fraud, but probably other approaches will be necessary to reduce this fraud.

Been through this 3 separate times. Very frustrating.

One interesting thing with Chase was that they did not make me update my autopay settings for any routine vendors - they said I could just update them when the old number was originally set to expire. Pretty nifty.

Also, I highly recommend freezing all 3 credit bureaus with a PIN, not just a fraud alert. That way, only you can unfreeze them when you seek credit and otherwise there is virtually no chance of someone making a fraudulent inquiry.

Up here (maybe in the US also) there is also an industry in defrauding CC holders through bogus fraud alerts. For a while I was getting text messages fairly frequently that to an unsuspecting person could seem legit stating that a charge of $xxx was posted on my Visa card and to take certain action (I believe it involved a phone call) to confirm it. That was somehow where the fraudsters would snag the caller. Of course it was easy to tell it was fake because they said it was posted on your card, and I could see online in looking at my account there was no such thing. For every defence the CC companies put up, the fraudsters come up with a new angle.

I had this happen last year. CC company flagged a bit purchase attempt at a HD many states away. Not sure what triggered it, but same deal. I verified it wasn't me, and they sent a new car. But thankfully they do keep the old one open for payments, and tie it to the new number for anything they recognize (your autopays). They aren't closing your account, just shuffling the numbers around!

I might be in the minority here, but I thought the Mustang II was a big improvement over the whale version in 73? I test drove one somewhere in the late 70s/early 80s when I was in school. I think it was out of my meager budget though. some sporty model hatch V6/4 speed. Quite the fancy piece considering I was cycling through stuff like a duster, Gremlin and Hornet in those days.

    Dumb name on that SUV.

I can’t see where they thought it was a good idea.

Then again.... this is the same manufacturer that turned the Thunderbird from a two seat convertible to a bloated 4 door cruiser back in the day.

Also the same manufacturer that took the best selling car in America, let it die a slow death in rental fleets and eventually brought back as a rebadged Volvo

And since I’m snarky this morning.... they also took the most robust, tested, bulletproof sedan ever made and allowed that to go away as well losing millions of dollars in fleet sales.

But... they still make great trucks and SUVs.

Paints that use tricoat or tintcoat formulations do cost more to apply and hence would justify a higher price when ordered. They are also more difficult to match when collision repairs are needed. However none of that would apply to a straight metallic formulation where the material cost is likely only marginally higher. Even with that we see several manufacturers charging extra for anything other than non-metallic black, red or white. GM used to offer either regular white or black at no charge along with their corporate silver (usually named Quicksilver or Silver Ice depending on brand) but now they often charge extra for that one as well. Simply an opportunity to increase their margin.

I’d also assume that the manufacturer orders a LOT more paint in the standard colors and gets better pricing on it than an optional color. Think about it, if you wanted “PF Flyer Red” as your car color, I suppose you could talk them into it with enough money, but an “off the chart” color will cost WAY more than an OEM optional color. It’s about volume and bulk pricing. All that Econ 101 stuff :)

If I get a text message for anything I know it’s a fake because my Trac phone is only used for work and no business or bank would even know it was mine. Also I don’t text. All my routine calls are on a land line.

Well think about it this way, they give it that name now and people start talking about it simply because they called it a Mustang. Pretty much as we are doing now. This way the word about this electric Ford gets out faster and to more people, in short free publicity for it. When it comes out it under a different name.

Ya stumped me on this one. I thought you were talking about the Taurus, but I’m fairly certain it was never a rebadged Volvo. Focus was a joint venture, but pretty sure that was never a best selling car.

Just when I was getting over Chrysler for slapping the Charger name on a 4 door sedan, Ford gets me all stirred up by calling an electric SUV a Mustang. :'( :@

If they are keeping the real Mustang in their lineup, this makes zero sense.

Maybe it was a bit of stretch saying "re-badged" but the 500/Montego/Freestyle later Taurus and Taurus X was an evolution of the Volvo S80 platform. It shared the Haldex AWD system as well as some of Volvo's safety structure.

in short free publicity for it.

Yeah, creating a buzz for sure. No such thing as bad press may be true here.

See here for a story about my law school escapades involving a Mustang II
    I'd take a 1973 Mach I with a 351 CJ over ANY Mustang II.
Interesting story of dealer incompetence/malfeasance. I notice that the post below your’s was driver100 going off on a tangent about floor joists or some such topic.

    Some things never change. :D
OF, how did I get involved in this. I haven't posted anything since the Mustang was mentioned, and I sure wouldn't say anything about floor joists which I wouldn't know anything about (I know, that hasn't stopped me before).

But I did see this...16 second video...Hillsborough County needs 120 School Bus Drivers immediately! Heres your chance,
    https://youtu.be/phCV3-Dg9R8
Out of curiosity, how does driving rental cars around compare with driving a school bus?

I drove taxis when I was going to Teachers College. I really got tired of people telling me where they wanted to go all the time.

Check on roadburner’s last post and click on the link to 2013 on a different forum. He was talking about Mustangs but the next post down was you talking about wood. :)

Back in 2011 I contacted the Pinellas county school district to inquire about jobs. The pay was about 50% less than I was making in NY so it went nowhere. You will find those “bus drivers needed” signs in front of every school in the country as there has been a terrific shortage of school bus drivers for over 30 years. The trouble is that the job is part time pay for full time responsibility. Hard to convince a person with a CDL to give up other opportunities for $10k a year.

Bus vs cars? Well, you still have to deal with all the idiots on the road but other than that it’s like comparing hell to heaven. In the car the boss isn’t breathing down your neck and filming your every move. No drug tests, no parents making up lies about how you disrespected their darlings, no crazy regulations and at worst only 5 crying children in the van compared with 66 in the bus.

I understand about driving a school bus......I would have to be desperate for a job, I'd rather work in a McDonalds. Speaking of which, I desperately needed a coffee yesterday so stopped at a McDs. Thought I would get a bagel or something small to go with the coffee......all they showed on the signs were Breakfast sandwiches, 800 calories and all were over $5! What is going on in the world?

That thing about floor joists I still don't get.....I know nothing at all about house building.

Here is a hypothetical question. Our inexpensive Whirlpool Florida fridge is 18 years old. It is white, but really getting tarnished. Seems to work OK, but, my fear is it will break down, and we will have to manage without a fridge and of course lose all our food inside it...including all my Moose Tracks Ice Cream.

I can get a comparable new fridge for $900. Would you gamble the fridge will last, or buy one now....or possibly on Black Friday if the prices drop?

I'm a cheapa$$ so I'd probably take the gamble and ride it out.

It's not like something you buy today would be any better quality, it will just look new and maybe save a few bucks on electricity.

Our kitchen appliances are all at 9 years old now. They are all working well (except a finicky ice maker) but starting to show a bit of wear.

Once the first one goes I'm thinking I'll replace all four but not doing a thing until that time.

Are you sure you were in Mickey D’s? Up here they have all the breakfast sandwiches on special for $2. Egg McMuffin is only 300 calories.

As for the joist thing just click on RB’s link and scroll down one post.

Wasn't the floor above the joist nailed to the joist?

Hope this helps. Most joists or beams run north and south and they are about a foot apart. This is a cross joist that runs East and West and they are about 20 feet apart. Yest, the floor could be nailed to them. Some of these are steel beams. This one is 3 thicknesses of wood, each is about an inch thick. Even with the 4 1/4 inch pipe running through it, there is maybe almost 3 inches of wood below and 1 1/2 to 2" of wood above it.

I doubt it would compromise the strength at all....all looks pretty solid.”

I think you’re on borrowed time so get a new one and put the old one out in the garage and fill it with ice cream.

An 18 y-o fridge owes you nothing and is probably on borrowed time.

    Yes, wait until Black Friday.
