I've seen a few without HK but the majority do have it. There's 2 Estoril Blue in Ohio. One in Cleveland and this one is in @kyfdx s backyard.

I like that one. No nav either, which is a plus for that car, IMO. As no frills as possible.

    Stop! Man... killing me, here.

That doesn't seem especially cheap for a three year old vehicle. Low miles, though.

I like how they stuck with 18" wheels.

    EDIT: Is that missing NAV?

I thought it came standard on the M235 for most years....

HK has always been an option; it should be standard.

How "fixable" is the base audio? Putting four new speakers in my Mustang was super easy (and cheap).
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 50,513
speakers are cheap and easy. Probably will make the biggest difference. Probably an amp is not a big deal either. Only if you want to get into the head unit these days does it get truly messy.

some day I will drive a BMW with the base radio and see for myself. That I suspect is extremely subjective, and I doubt it will bother me all that much.

I will agree that it is a very good system. Light years better than the base unit in my Elantra. That failed my one basic test. If I can drive on the highway with the roof open and still hear it!

but I would be happy with something in between. Plus, it will be my wife's car and whenever we are together, any time I try to turn up the volume a bit, she turns it back down. And I know she would never appreciate a true audiophile system.

Is your RDX a base or tech? How does the audio sound? 2017 RDXs with 36k mi or less are listing in the low 20s. I know they’re last generation, but have good reliability and the V6 is a nice performer. Though I do like sedans, it might be a reasonable alternative to replace my Accord as it approaches 100k. The new Accord sits lower than my 13 which makes getting in and out not as easy. My Accord will need new front brake pads, fresh brake fluid, transmission service, spark plugs, radiator flush in the near future. Just thinking it may be time to trade before I make that commitment.

we have a base model but it is still a good system. Subwoofer in the back, and plenty of good sound IMO. Not an ELS but fine to me.

I considered a newer version (though who wants to replace a car after 7 years with the same model!) But I would not buy another without the tech package. And definitely needs to be a post-facelift unit.

it is a nice car. solid, reasonable economical for the size and performance, fast, handles well, reliable. Just in our case, outdated tech features.

Bavsound and a couple of other companies sell plug and play speaker and amplifier updates. Prices are pretty reasonable; on a 2017 F22 Bavsound wants $497 for the door/side panel speakers and $547 for the underseat subs.

if my wife likes it, and she will be happy, no worries to me. I would not likely do it for myself though. And the late run (after a MMY update) with the tech package is different enough to be noticeable. They just don't seem to have become cheap enough to make it worth doing. a 2018 in the mid-20s? Sure. Low 30s? Nah.

Exactly why I'm not sure if the new 2020 VW Golf SE will be the next vehicle in my garage. It looks like a Golf but with some subtle changes. Hoping the interior, especially the back up camera is much better than the awful unit I've got now. Love the Fender audio set up and pray they throw in the new Beats system they use in certain Jetta models. Not sure I want to go with the local audio store as one never knows if the equipment is good enough for the intended person. Most times the price is way out there and the install isn't that well done. One of my new co-workers used to use the same local guy I did and we both loved his work/prices. He did quality work for a fair price and luckily, he got what we were expecting though it was a bit on the high side. He's like me in that we both want a decent sounding system in our vehicles which won't break the bank by any means. But would prefer a great stock system from the get go that the dealer warranties. And to be totally honest, I like having a warranty. And now that my driving will be going down by maybe 3/4, might look into leasing my next rig, have never done it before because I usually put around 12K to 13K per year on whatever I drive no matter what. Luckily, that's going to be changing for 2020 as I doubt I'll be returning to that Hertz location anytime soon!

Even at $8k, it would be a strong sale for them. They may have paid $4500 for it. I’d look for $7k as long as it is in good shape and needs nothing. Maybe $7500 if it glows in the dark, has new tires, etc.

Mid $5k at auction, so it is suspicious

    >> I drove it this morning and put $500 down, pending a mechanic's check tomorrow. No check engine light, no >> obvious issues, aside from the most awful racket upon startup from the starter/engine after sitting a bit.

To conclude: Following the checkup and a chat with my mechanic, I took the car back.

There was a good-sized oil leak at the front of the engine, which apparently leaks only under pressure, hence no tell-tale puddle underneath. The most likely situation, he said, was that when opening the front cover of the engine to access the timing chain, we would find it quite loose, and responsible for the noise upon cold start. $1,400 for this repair, assuming a new chain, tensioner, and presumably water pump. However, the rattling sound in the rear came from the exhaust banging against the aftermarket trailer hitch, which had worn into both mufflers and was about to go through. On top of which the car looked if anything worse rust-wise than my Mazda6 with five more years and twice the miles. A highway commute around Ann Arbor, MI will do that, apparently. Tearing into that exhaust system would have taken a braver man than me. There was a little black soot inside the exhaust pipe, which in itself is not unusal, depending on the model, but it had a hint of greasiness to it. The mechanic agreed it was probaby burning a little bit of oil. After checking a few hundred cars, one gets a feel for what is and isn't OK.

Taking it all in, the car was priced fairly but would need quite a bit of watching in the future; not the kind of thing to hand to an amateur and tell them to go work on their career.

What did I learn from this? Ramps in the driveway on a sunny day is a difficult way to get a good luck at the underside of a car. It's dark there, and everything around is blindingly bright. Even so I should have seen the leak from the timing cover, but it would have taken a slow, careful inspection of an unfamiliar car. As Yogi Berra said, you can see a lot just by looking... But you have to REALLY look, something I learned a long time ago but didn't take the proper time to do. I also learned that rust problems do look different for different situations, even in the same state. This was amazingly bad for a car with a March 2012 build date.
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 50,513
Just curious, but how long is the new guy going to be around, and looking to have this car? Thinking that if it is possible, could they just get a super cheap lease instead? Or is financing impossible for some reason? sometimes it is better to pay a little more to end up paying less, and not having to deal with problems they are unprepared to handle.

    >> Or is financing impossible for some reason?

You're quite right about 'better to pay a little more' but the lease/loan thing is the other way round -- usually these folks are here on a non-immigrant visa, and while they may or may not be able to secure a loan, they positively cannot enter into a lease. I have not a clue why that is, but it's true nonetheless.

Funny thing is, the new "guy" is a permanent hire with the expectation she'll stick around for the duration and eventually get a green card. She'll find out if the local credit union will float her a loan; if not, she has enough money to get a worthwhile car. We'll see.

There's also a new post-Doc from France but he hasn't been in touch yet.

In our field, there's a few dozen universities worldwide where people do the work, and maybe a half dozen labs where you can go to run experiments... there aren't a lot of jobs either, but when you do have to fill a position, you have to cast a wide net. Not many Europeans bring their car with them.

... Not many Europeans bring their car with them.
Just speculating... Having *no* US credit record may be a disqualifier for a lease, but for financing, may just make it more difficult.

There was a professor at my undergrad who brought over some sort of diesel Audi wagon in the early 2000s, which obviously wasn't sold here, and I thought it was really cool.

mid 27s at auction, so I'd advise $30k retail. This is PP, so ... $29k?
There are still 2019s on dealer lots. Have you looked into what one of those would cost?

    '11 GMC Sierra 1500; '08 Charger R/T Daytona; '67 Coronet R/T; '13 Fiat 500c; '20 S90 T6; '22 MB Sprinter 2500 4x4 diesel; '97 Suzuki R Wagon; '96 Opel Astra; '08 Maser QP; '11 Mini Cooper S

Yeah, I'm looking at that as well - wife would actually prefer an EX-L and probably a '20 for the honda 10 spd over the zf 9sp. I'm just always hoping to save a couple bucks... :)
    Thanks for the auction value.
