Hey @qbrozen - a friend of mine is looking at a 2018 Raptor in Westport, CT. 21K miles. Fully loaded recent trade in at a Toyota dealership. Original sticker $79K. Grey over Black. 10/10 exterior - 10/10 interior. Asking $60K. What do you think?

Similar one crossed in Jan for $41.2k, but that was an anomaly. Average is more like $46k. I’d have a hard time going back $50k on it, I think. There is a red one near me with 9k miles for $54k.

60K seems high to me especially at a Toyota dealer. That’s also one truck I’d be really scared to buy used. Even one off road incident could really mess things up.

Update - my sister sold her Lexus RX hybrid with 180k on it.

She listed it for $6950, and sold it for $6000 to an older lady who had just moved to CA. Her son complemented my sister on the condition of it.

Feedback? Ok, it is slow, unattractive, and low-rent. How’s that?

But, regarding the price, it is quite good, as long as it checks out. Worth $20k-$21k at auction.

Can someone tell me what a good price would be for a 2018 Lincoln Navigator Reserve with 26k miles? The one I’m looking at is a CPO and listed for $62k. The carfax shows damage so I contacted the dealership. They shared the service record and it was replacing the front bumper.

I have a 2017 Dodge Challenger SXT Plus with 20k miles on it. The tires need to replaced. Apart from that, the car is in excellent condition. My lease payoff is 18.5k and the dealer is offering 23k. My research shows I can get around 24k with private party but then it depends on finding a buyer and hoping everything goes through smoothly. I was planning to get 2020 GT Challenger/Charger after this.

Is it good idea to sell this and upgrade or pay 18.5k (+taxes) and buyout?

    Thanks!
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 50,441
if you don't want to commit to the car long term, the dealers offer is great move. And if there is a sales tax credit where you are, could be cheaper overall than private sale.

also, these days especially, selling privately is tough, even more so in that price range. Buyers need financing, you have to deal with all the hassles. If a trade in offer is close I always go that way. Plus that 24k is what a book says. Not someone on your front porch with a big bag of cash.

A carfax ding is always tough. Comes down to you and how long you’ll keep it. If the history was clean, I could see $64k-$65k CPO being fair. If it were me, I’d not want to break $58k with the history. Doubt they’d go there, though.

Decent offer from the dealer. And great deal for you on the buyout. But if you want new, then get new. There is no wrong choice here.

Well, I offered $55k. Haven’t heard back yet.

On a separate note, what’s up with everyone wanting to communicate over text? It’s been several years since I last bought a car, and every dealer I reach out to wants to communicate over text? Maybe I’m just old school and prefer speaking to someone.

Five speed manual and the 2.slow. Looks to be in really nice shape.

Buying a convertible in MI is like buying a motorcycle. Lots of years, not a lot of months or miles.

It's been traded to the original selling dealer and is awaiting transport to my favorite purveyor of hoopties.
I haven't a clue what something like this should be worth... $1,500 wholesale cuz it's old? $7000 retail cuz it's clean? They might both be true ;)

Sounds like it’s worth what it’s worth to someone who is looking for it.

That said, $7000 strikes me as a bit steep for a car with the 2.slow.

if it has tan interior, I might buy it if cheap enough. $7k is not cheap enough, but with those miles might approach that. Maybe need to ship it south though.

who cares if it is slow. Convertibles like that are for putting around town with the top down, enjoying the sunshine. Plus the stick can make up for a lot of the dog factor.

Oh heck, no kid of mine will be paying seven large for a 16-year-old anything. But a dealer might try to get that, and even succeed. I was illustrating my ignorance as to its value.

The engine is my preference for MkIV Golfs and Jettas, at least with a 5speed. Fast enough, turbo-free, reliable and simple. None of us commute on the freeway ... you know, back when people commuted. Like stick said, winding the engine out in second will produce decent accleration when needed. Even the Germans can't mess up an iron block 8V engine.
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 50,441
agreed about the simplicity factor as they age. The 1.8t is faster, but definitely has issues.

I assume the 2.5l 5 banger is fine too.

Close. They’ll probably ask $6k-$6500. I’d be looking at $4500 if it was my money. Right about $2k auction value.

@qbrozen: Any opinion on the trade-in value of this 2016 M3?

Hmmm... love it or hate it color combo, definitely audience-limiting. Do my eyes deceive me or is this a moonroof-less BMW? And the current seller is already the 3rd owner. NORMALLY, this is in the 42s at auction. I’d have to say this has several big demerits to the general buying public (and buying dealer) that likely puts this at very high 30s range. No CPO, so it will come down to how much you want it. I would say $44k is absolute can’t live without it top dollar.

Huh. These are a bit odd right now. I've got half of my examples with miles in the mid 30k that sold for $24k, but then the other half have 10k-24k miles and sold for under $22k. Region doesn't seem to matter. I'll just show you what I got and let you decide.

A dealer here in Louisville had a '17 3.6R Limited last week, CPO with EyeSight, similar miles, and it was listed for $24,6. That '18 up in Cincinnati is listed at $24,9 so I just might have to take a look, even without the CPO or EyeSight.

Carvana is at 15,1 on my RDX (2015, AWD, Tech, 68k). One thing I'm not sure about is, if I trade it instead of Carvana-ing, whether the KY sales tax credit is applicable on an Ohio transaction.

It should be. You register and pay tax in your home state, not where you buy it, so shouldn’t make a difference. Key word, shouldn’t. Always good to check!

I got more for my 2013 base with 59k back in March. $15.6k I think.

If you sell it to one dealer, and buy from another, I can guarantee you won't get a sales tax trade-in credit in KY. That has nothing to do with out of state. It has to be in one transaction.

That part of it I know. Just wasn't sure if trading and buying with the same dealer in Ohio would still get me the credit in KY. I imagine it would, because the bill of sale will still list the trade side of the transaction too.

Neither is a smart move if they drive that much. Are they working in a budget? Luxury car + lots of miles + budget = disaster. I don’t care who makes it, with over 100k, maintenance is going to hurt when driving an old car that much.

I appreciate the quality feedback and will try to steer him towards a newer vehicle with less miles.
    Definitely working in a budget.
Thanks again Q, Stickguy, and corvette.

Up I’d trust the Avalon more though. Better mpg, less to go wrong bits really just a big Camry.

So true! And, the mention of "Massachusetts" is NOT a small detail here! Based on my short time there, I will say with confidence that 100,000 miles in MA is likely equivalent to upwards of 200,000 in most other places. The people there drove, simply as a matter of course, with a level of aggression that I have never seen anywhere else. Driving like that takes its toll on vehicles, no matter how well built.

So this one appears to be a local trade at a dealer in suburban Cincinnati, so there won't be an auction figure out there...

2018 Outback 3.6R Limited, gray with black interior
    no EyeSight or Nav
    37K miles

How good/bad/ugly is their retail ask of $24866?

Huh. These are a bit odd right now. I've got half of my examples with miles in the mid 30k that sold for $24k, but then the other half have 10k-24k miles and sold for under $22k. Region doesn't seem to matter. I'll just show you what I got and let you decide.

I noticed that for all but one of the lowest-mile/lowest-price copies, under "Type" it says "Factory." What does that actually mean?

If I discount those, all the others (one outlier aside) would suggest that something in the $24s retail is pretty damn good. Though Cincinnati takes a little more planning than just calling over to Bachman. :)

I found a Manheim handbook (old, 2007) here, which indicates, "Factory Sales represent approximately 16% of all wholesale auction sales. It’s estimated that automakers consign around 1 million cars to auction. Factory sales are usually open to franchised dealers only." (page 26)

Later, on page 48, it also says, "Factory (Program) Vehicles: Based on manufacturers’ marketing strategies, fleets of vehicles are sold to rental companies under various programs. Manufacturers’ programs with rental companies may call for the repurchasing and remarketing of these vehicles by the manufacturer in closed auction sales. Program cars are most often all current-model-year units, and are still under factory warranty. Often, the manufacturers sell these available vehicles in closed physical or online auctions, only to their franchised dealers. This gives the factory’s dealers first pick at current-model-year, quality used vehicles. Program cars also give the dealer an opportunity to put a customer who cannot afford a brand new vehicle into a current-year used vehicle and possibly save the sale for the brand."

If so, perhaps that is why the sale price is down, because of a restricted audience?
