    When we replaced the kitchen appliances 5 or 6 years ago, Lowes wanted some ungodly amount to install the microwave, so I decided to do it myself.
    Replaced a GE with an LG. I was able to reuse the rear bracket, but had to drill new holes in the overhead cabinet.
    Stove was a glass top, so moved it and used a 2x4 to hold up the microwave while I put in the top screws.

    @driver100,
    I'll lend you the 2x4 if you want to stop over and get it. :p

    I replaced my microwave a few years ago. Picked the old one up off the counter and put the new one down. Easy peezy.

    I never could understand mounting one over a hot stove.

    Probably the biggest reason is that it saves counter space.

    The tree saga update:

    The tree service "owner" was curt in first conversation by phone indicating trees were "old" and "dying." Of course the tree folks destroyed the evidence of that and took it away. Tree guy had told DIL that morning that trees were sick and dying; tree guy had done them a favor by cutting them!

    After contacting arborist who had been there a few weeks ago to come out again and a different arborist specialist who places value and testifies to such, son called back to see what tree service would offer: they would replant 2 trees, of unstated height and age (originals were 12-13 feet and look healthy in contemporaneous pictures), grind out old stumps, and pay $200. Son informed him that a third party would do any stump grinding and planting--not the tree guy whose specialty is removing trees.

    Son figures trees were worth 6-800$ US and with the treble damages for careless destruction of trees per Ohio Revised Code he's looking for several thousand in damages. The tree guy accused son of harassing him and hung up on him (3rd phone call, no harassment). I told son the guy will change the name of the company, declare bankruptcy, and be operating with a new name on the truck in a few weeks. I'm always the pessimist. There are some details about the company I can't post.

    Owner doesn't know son was a standout in Mock Trial in high school. He entered The Ohio State (Go Bucks) with possible idea of law school and being a science and math oriented attorney. Son is enjoying this, I believe, because the tree guy is in for a surprise since the law first seems to have someone who specializes in this type of suit.

    I used the word "attorney" in my post, and now I got an advertisement on Chrome for an attorney office. Think our information isn't being tracked and monetized (sold)?

    You're so right about that. The only web page I get some relief from advertising is Edmunds. Most times my internet experience is interrupted by so many popup ads that it is not worth the trouble. To me, the worst offender is YouTube followed by the Boston Globe and New York Times. This annoyance continues unto my Smart TV and Smartphone with no relief in sight. What can I do? Help!

    My gut tells me the SVS but the Klipsch seems like a good value.

    It's hard to beat an SVS sub; but the Klipsch is no slouch. I might be tempted to buy the Klipsch from a store with a liberal return policy, and if it doesn't float your boat you can always go with the SVS.
    I’m really leaning toward the Klipsch, but just don’t want to be disappointed

    Having lived a large-ish complex in downtown Bellevue, a very diverse place, I can attest to food smells now and then, although I recall only one incident of it being painful - some gormless dope fried fish at midnight and aired out their place by leaving the interior hallway door open. Myself and probably 20 others complained - and they never did that again. Noise was usually a function of the quality of the building, which was for the most part likely built as cheap as possible - it was modern and had the amenities I want, but was built to simply be functional. But the location made it more expensive than surrounding areas, so party animals really didn't exist there.

    Now, as I am in an area with much lower housing costs, I am in a small "premium" building, and dealing directly with the owner, which is cool. I couldn't afford this place in Bellevue or Seattle, even with a decent salary. The quality of construction and finishes here is on another level, and it is quiet, no smells as it isn't as tight - only noise is occasional from a couple kids in the building (I find it odd families would live here, as you can get a detached house with a yard etc for the same money, or larger apartments for less), and even then it usually isn't really annoying. Knock on wood, if the job continues to be enjoyable and stable, in a year or so I might be looking to buy. I could deal with a condo finished similar to this place as well. Of course, prices are rising here, but still well under half of anywhere even remotely desirable in Seattle metro.

    The trouble with Condo or Townhouse dwelling are the neighbors you might get. Our son lived in the Condo we owned for several years. It was on the bottom floor and the unit above was a rental. He went through several renters and they got worse and worse! He got a weightlifter who would slam his weights to the ground. Finally we sold the Condo and he bought a house.

    A friend bought a nice Condo and was quite happy until new neighbors moved in next to him. These people were from India and according to my friend they were quite nice and kept to themselves. The trouble was they cooked their traditional foods which REALLY had a foul smell. Lots of curry and spices that filtered into his unit.

    He tried to nicely complain but was told " This is what we eat!"

    This would be our main fear as we think about selling our big house and downsizing.

    Watching a house-hunting show with a DINK couple. Looking at a place 30 minutes from anywhere w/ a great kitchen and complaining that it doesn’t have double ovens and just a 5-burner gas cooktop. 🙄

    It’s TV so it falls into the category of entertainment. I’d be wiling to bet that Mrs. j cooks a lot more than those kooks who we see on those shows. She has always had to make do with one oven and an electric range at that, not gas, which seems to be a must if your going to claim that you know how to boil water. The range we have now has a 5 th element but it’s just a keep warm thingy. You cannot use it for cooking. We’ve had this thing since 2010 and awhile back I asked her how many times she’s used it. Her answer was once just to see if it worked.

    AND let’s not forget that you have to have a house with an “open concept”, which I’ll never understand. I guess people want to hear the noise in the kitchen while they’re watching TV in the family room. But, since people are convinced they have to have the “open concept” thingy, on flip house #2 we tore down the wall dividing the living room from the kitchen so the house complies with the rule for having an “open concept”. Who am I to knock it since the house is already sold and it was never even put on the market nor is it fully completed yet.

    Same here as far as oven and stove. When we replaced that stove/oven I asked if she wanted gas. She didn't care so I didn't have to run another gas line.

    When I did the kitchen a few years ago I asked Mrs. venture is she wanted me to knock down a wall to open things up. She said she really didn't want her kitchen to be in her living room.

    If a house is small, removing a wall or two can make it appear bigger. It still doesn't take away the fact that you will be boiling your asparagus in your living room.

    People watch HGTV and think they have to have some of that. My son's house he used to have in MD was open plan, stainless steel, some open shelving, and, of course, a barn door. He bought it that way.

    Well, they either create or reflect the trends. Gray paint on every wall, white cabinets in kitchens, quartz or marble counters (apparently granite is now passe), open shelves (try living with that for a while), barn doors (best left in barns IMO), shiplap on interior walls, showers that are bigger than a lot of bathrooms in older homes, and closets that are bigger than most other rooms in those older places. No wonder the McMansion has become popular.

    Lucky, I am surprised everything isn't shut down there, given the precautions that region has taken in the past. I was going to hit the ice for the first time in almost 3 months today - no dice, shut down for 4 weeks.

    Also cool such a place opens their facility to the public, so it actually isn't just for the rich and very rich alike.

    It irks me to see good stuff thrown in the skip too, along with vintage material probably built to a higher standard than modern material also sent to the bin.

    My grandmother's original owner 60s house has mostly original finishes, including the kitchen - kind of blond/birch cabinets, mottled pastel green formica countertops, originally had bronze colored appliances. She passed away not long ago, and the house is still in the family, but I suspect it will be sold soon after the new year. I know the next owner will gut it all.

    My place, a recent build, has granite in the kitchen and bathrooms - a somewhat sparkly granite which doesn't look bad I think. Light colored bamboo cabinets, a small open space in the upper cabinetry, wide and deep rectangular sink, backlit heated mirrors in the bathrooms, no medicine cabinets (irked me at first), large tiled shower probably half the size of the entire bathroom in an older house, light grey paint with dark grey trim, polished concrete floors - hip now anyway.

    Better look quick, because it'll be much different in 3-5 years. I'll just leave it at that. It pained me to see (back when I watched those shows, but I've quit now) perfectly nice upscale kitchens ripped out because they're no longer "in style."

    I was thinking of qbrozen yesterday when I delivered a vehicle to a dealer. It had the 5.7L Hemi. The first thing the guy did was start the engine and listen for ticks. Evidently he didn’t care if there were dents, scratches or if the interior was intact. I guess he didn’t hear any noise because he accepted it.

    I probably wouldn’t have noticed what he was doing if it hadn’t been for Q’s recent scare.

    The trouble with building a HGTV inspired house is that some of those shows are a decade old. You could be building a non-trendy home that your friends will snicker at behind your back.

    I was watching one of those renovation flipper shows with my wife this morning. The husband was obnoxious and I commented that she should divorce him.

    My wife responded that they weren’t a couple any more and the show had been in repeats for years.

    One of the reasons for an open floorplan is to indeed create a larger area for entertaining and allow people prepping food to still interact with guests. In smaller homes it does tend to shove living and cooking spaces together but in larger homes it does get spread apart.

    A friend just had a McMansion built. It has almost everything in it that you would see on HGTV on Saturday.

    Who cares if your friends snicker behind your back, you're the one who has to live in the home, build the home you want. I have the same philosophy when it comes to cars, homes, wedding dresses and booze, forget what anyone else says get what you like.

    Better look quick, because it'll be much different in 3-5 years. I'll just leave it at that. It pained me to see (back when I watched those shows, but I've quit now) perfectly nice upscale kitchens ripped out because they're no longer "in style."

    I didn't mean for that to sound complimentary. Quite the opposite.

    Yeah, very bizarre. She always struck me as very high-maintenance and not a very nice person. Not that Tariq was god's gift to women either. The wedding of her and Ant was quick and a big surprise to his friends and acquaintances. She did a quick HGTV series on her own in Calif. around that time. My impression was that not very long after she had his kid she walked out on him. My sense was he was blindsided by it, and that she felt he wasn't paying enough attention to the home front. I think that is a big part of why he is not going back to the UK to continue the next WD series as he's trying to put his life back together after his second marriage breakup. And I believe that she and her original ex are doing a new series of house flip shows together again. Life in the fast lane...

    I would guess that someone matching their house to a TV renovation show would care.

    You’d have to ask my wife. I’m still trying to figure out what happened to Christy Lee on All Girls Garage.

    She is apparently still a part of Garage Squad. I personally much preferred her predecessor on that show, Heather Storm.

    In my family boys are vastly outnumbered by girls, all my siblings are girls, all my aunts and uncles had only one boy but multiple girls, my wife is one of 6 girls and all of them had multiple daughters but one son each. So I have witnessed multiple brides get pressured into or out of wedding dresses.

    @ab348,
    I'm with you on preferring Heather on Garage Squad. She provided a lot spark and personality.
    Kind of like when AJ was replaced on Overhaulin' (had to ask my wife what the show is called).
    AJ came back, maybe Heather can, too/

    When Lee was added to Garage Squad it felt like MT TV had decided she was going to be one of the faces of their programming franchise, just like when they sent her to the B-J auctions along with Jacobs, even though I never felt either of them added a whole lot. If I'm being honest I would say that I never liked her very much in any of the roles she was in on any of those shows because I never believed she was doing anything other than reading a script. Whereas with Ms. Storm at least, she seemed to be about the same in terms of knowledge but her on-screen presence and delivery seemed much more natural and was one I much preferred.

    @nyccarguy,
    I wish I had known, I could have borrowed your truck to go to Home Depot while you were at the game. ;)
    Hopefully your son will get to keep playing, The rules are tightening up.

    Thanks! Although it doesn’t look like it’s going to happen. As of tomorrow, all hockey is being shut down until 1/19/21. Today’s game was cancelled because the team we were supposed to play didn’t have enough players off of their 2 week quarantine. So yesterday was the last game (hopefully not for the season).

    My older son (14) had a positive Covid case in the middle of October. The team shut down for 2 weeks. 1st game back, my son got hit and got a concussion. That was 2 weeks ago. Dr says he needs to be out at least another 3 weeks, so the shutdown works in his favor.

    My son in goal yesterday wearing the black uniform. The Avon goalie is the one who is 12 years old & 6 feet tall before he puts skates on:

    @nyccarguy,
    That goalie needs to be tested for HGO! :p
    Actually, it's good he can play.
    One of my nephew's wanted to play football, but when he was young he had a hard time finding a place to play; too big for the age group or too young for where his weight was ok.
    Concussions are not good, wishing the best for your son.
