Can a dealer increase the money factor (MF), say from .00171 to .00211, simply "because if we aren't charging over MSRP currently then our finance manager needs to make money somewhere"? I called them out on it and you could tell they were uncomfortable with how much I knew of all the numbers and terms. Ultimately, when factoring out payments the increase in the MF would be 1,800 over MSRP. Seems they are robbing Mary to pay Paul as they say. I would rather they just say they are charging over MSRP as a market adjustment rather than hiding it in the MF. Perhaps it is in their right, albeit unethical, but I thought the MF was set a corporate level and that was non-negotiable. Please let me know your thoughts either way. I'm inclined to reach out to Genesis corporate. Thank you!

Yes, the dealer can mark up the MF by .00040, which they tried to do to you.

That's why knowing the numbers up front can help in those negotiations.

It's really a matter of who gets the bigger commission - the salesman (price over MSRP) or the finance manager (marked up MF).

Ideally, you'd prefer neither, but I'm not sure that's feasible in today's market. Pick your battles.
