Perhaps it is in their right, albeit unethical, but I thought the MF was set a corporate level and that was non-negotiable. Please let me know your thoughts either way. I'm inclined to reach out to Genesis corporate. Thank you!
    Yes, the dealer can mark up the MF by .00040, which they tried to do to you.

    That's why knowing the numbers up front can help in those negotiations.

    It's really a matter of who gets the bigger commission - the salesman (price over MSRP) or the finance manager (marked up MF).

    Ideally, you'd prefer neither, but I'm not sure that's feasible in today's market. Pick your battles.

    I am struggling to match the numbers and hope you can help. I used the online Edmunds Lease Calculator also.

    MSRP 51320 (is also the selling price)
    36/10
    MF .00171
    Residual 56%
    Zip 08550
    Dealer Doc Fees 175
    Acquisition Fees 750

    I plan to pay all the fees as down payment.

    Now, when I reduce the residual from the MSRP, I get $22,511, which equates to $625 as base payment. Online calculator shows the following -


    Lease Payment (excluding Taxes and Fees): $764. How do we get $764 on a base $625 payment with 4.1%?

    Also, the taxes show $1,895, shouldn't the taxes be charged only on the Selling Price - Residual i.e. on $22,511 = $1491

    with this MSRP car, I was under the impression the payment will be $625+ 4.1% interest on reducing balance + tax of 6.625% i.e. ~$670. Online calculator shows ~$800.

    That's not how the interest is calculated on a lease.

    $764 is the correct, pre-tax payment.

    The monthly rent charge is calculated as follows:

    (cap cost + residual value) multiplied by the MF decimal value.

    You are paying the rent charge across the entire amount financed, not just the depreciation amount.

    The residual is fixed by the bank, and the dealer cannot change it.

    The MF, however, can be marked up by the dealer (and likely will be, given this market). With the short inventory levels, I'm not sure there is much you can do about it.

    To answer your question, just tell them you know the MF is marked up (if in fact it is), without telling them the specific numbers.
