First off it’s too freaking hot this early in the season in Louisville. 75F on my Sat morning long run isn’t usually a thing until well into June.

As for car dealers, I have two questions… how would anyone test drive a vehicle? And would all pre owned transactions fall into the realm of Carmax/Carvana/others that exclusively sell used cars, with CPO from manufacturers a thing of the past?

    Latest Ford Recalls:
Ford is asking the owners of 350,000 vehicles in to take them to dealers for repairs in three recalls, including about 39,000 that should be parked outdoors because the engines can catch fire.
Ford says it’s not instructing owners to stop driving the SUVs, although those who might not be able to follow the park outdoors instructions should contact their dealer or the company.

The automaker also is recalling about 310,000 heavy-duty trucks because the driver’s air bag may not inflate in a crash.

And the company is recalling 464 electric Mustang Mach-E SUVs from 2021. A software problem can cause unintended acceleration, deceleration or a loss of drive power in all-wheel-drive vehicles.

I kind of like those Lincoln SUVs but I don't want a car that can catch on fire........especially when they can't figure out how they are happening.

I got a recall for something to do with backup camera wiring but they have no parts so “they’ll call me”. At least it’s not for the engine blowing up like the Kia.
Well, engines catching on fire isn't a good thing either.
And, at least you have a backup camera! :p
I suspect those engine fires have something to do with the ultra high pressure fuel pumps used in direct injection engines. Fortunately, my engine is port injection so I don’t think I have to worry about a high pressure pump blowing a gasket and spraying gas everywhere.

The way I could see it working is the dealer gets the new car from the manufacturer, preps and delivers it. In exchange for that service would be a flat fee from the manufacturer (built into the price of the car). The dealer could operate their used car sales and/or service department as needed. Tons of jobs lost on the dealer end, but the manufacturers would need a whole crew from customer service to finance specialists and titling personnel.

Lots of holes in my idea, but IMO the general principal is close

Back in the late 90's I was part of a focus group that was presented a new way of buying a new vehicle.
You would schedule a test drive and the vehicle(or one similar) would be brought from a hub local so you could drive it.
I personally wasn't interested in that.

I wonder what the percentage of people buying still base their decision off of the test drive.

Good point! You should write to Ford, they don't seem to have any idea how the fires are starting. They suggest you don't park in a garage....sounds like good advice to me.

Generally, if I like the look and the info I can find on a car, then I go for a test drive. I wouldn't buy a car without testing it. In the case of our 2013 Audi A4, we test drove a bmw 325....liked it but did not like the trade in allowance, went down the street to confirm what I should be able to get for the trade in, the Audi dealer came in right on what I wanted, and we liked driving the Audi more than the bmw. So yeh, I have to test drive, see that the seating is right, the views, the feel of the car, but I am sure a percentage of people couldn't care less about those things.

I don't have much luck with my built in GPS. I tried to put in a fairly easy name about 3 times the other day and it came up completely wrong...not even close to what I said. I did take a Radio & TV Arts course once and I speak pretty clear English, but the friendly GPS lady completely bungled it.

So, today I added WAZE to my phone, and it works so much better. It is easier to use, picks up my instructions easily, the directions are more sensible, nicer more friendly voice, also will warn of accidents, police cars, slow downs...I think it gives alternatives.

I read a letter to an auto column in the newspaper saying that to get an update for his 6 year old car was very expensive, and these days after a certain time they won't even update the GPS....I think WAZE is always up to date. The TV and radio stations are using it now too.

They should just build in a WAZE screen right on the instrument panel...forget about a factory GPS.

I can’t imagine buying a vehicle without a test drive. Even if I’ve read from publications and other sources positive reviews I want to confirm I like how it drives, comfort of the seats, ease of use, ride, quietness, etc.

    Well….that didn’t take long….

I think we all saw this coming. Dealerships don’t have the foresight to see anything past their nose…particularly Ford.

    https://www.carscoops.com/2022/05/should-carmakers-replace-msrps-with-set-prices/

They aren’t doing themselves any favors. If they don’t stop it will be a short term gain but long term loss. I am standing on the hill saying once they are able to the manufacturers will be pumping out inventory as fast as they can.

All it is going to take is one manufacturer to stick it to the dealers and start direct sales and all will follow suit.

What I would love to see is manufacturers looking at the inflated prices that the cars are selling for and telling the dealerships that they made an error on the price since the dealerships are getting so much more for them and now they will start charging the dealership more.

Well, I have a spreadsheet of vehicles and can remember which I test drove when I look at the list.

So Jan 2020 test drive of the Ioniq.
After that, Nov 2020 test drove the Fiat (well, she did).
And I forgot that she did test drive an S90 before we bought one.

Those bought/leased with no test drive:
    WRX
    MACH-e
    Wrangler 4xe
    Camaro
    TRX
    Coronet
    ML63
    Gloria
    Sprinter (if it ever arrives)

The list would be longer if I included those where I drove a different example than what I/we bought.

Hasn’t the use of factory NAV systems fallen off since the advent of phone based technology? I always thought it an expensive option for what you got. Never had it in any car I owned and never missed it.
For the first time in a long time, I had to drive to an address for the first time today. I used my phone rather than the built in nav system in the Outback.

My RDX is the only vehicle I have ever had with Nav and I haven't used it. Honestly, I almost never acknowledge the "disclaimer" and just let the head screen go dark. Almost like old school driving, as I still have controls and minimal readouts for the climate control and the radio (Sirius included).

I never use the built in navi in the RDX (the Maverick does not even have it) to navigate. I use Google Maps thru carplay for that. But I only fire that up when I need maps, so most of the time I have the Acura Navi up in the small side of the split screen. I look at it occasionally when I want to see a road name coming up. most of the time my phone just stays in my pocket.

I liked to joke that my NAV system was folded up in the glove box. :#

Wife's car has NAV, and it's pretty good. Plus, voice commands.
One weird thing: It pronounces Dayton as Day - a -ton.

I have Carplay in the GTI, but you have to be plugged in with a USB. My son bought me the Cup Phone holder from Weathertech, which works great. GTI has a touch screen, or I can use Siri for commands. Very easy.

Most people don't need a NAV system very often, since we aren't looking for new address. Maybe if we were real estate or delivery people. But, when you do need it you want it to work. They are expensive options usually........I like the idea of built in but I prefer WAZE on my phone.

2021 Tesla goes up in flames in Vancouver. The guy was driving it, all his power went off, smoke started to fill the car, he didn't know it had an unlocking device that wasn't on the power system, so he kicked out a window.

My kid uses GPS constantly when driving for LYFT. I don’t know if a LYFT app or his phone’s system. He did figure out how to use the antique SYNC system (2010) so now he can talk on the phone through the radio.

That's the Lyft app. Pretty much required, if you are driving for Lyft.

Can you actually make money driving for LYFT?

I leave WAZE up when driving on the highway even if I’m not navigating. The alerts are handy.

You should hear some of the pronunciations you will get in some parts of the upper midwest where you get a lot of places with French names. Names like Charlevoix gets butchered.

About new car dealerships….when I was still kicking tires and “thinking” about selling the TLX, I visited a couple of Ford dealers about Broncos they had in stock. This was 2-3 months ago. One was bad, the other was worse.

Their advertising, their marketing materials, even the slogans they used, all pointed to the fact that they ALWAYS put their customers first. That they were great to deal with. That their whole reason for existing was to earn my business and offer the best car buying experience I ever had. That they wanted me to be a customer for life…..etc, etc, etc!

Obviously, none of that was true. They practiced “bait and switch” (advertising one price, and charging another…much higher price). They added frivolous and useless options that HAD TO BE added to the purchase price. One Bronco I looked at, brand new, in their showroom, had the top of the dash warping already. It was actually wavy with the speaker grills littlerally unable to fit in the cut of the top of the dash. They wanted $3K over MSRP for that piece of “work”. I laughed at their gall.

Flirted with a Chevy Bolt purchase. Again, Chevy dealer and ADM on it. It was a 2022. It needed a new battery, but was not going to replace it until they sold it. Think about that…a defective car that may catch on fire, that Chevrolet said needed to have a battery replacement, charging well over MSRP.

They are being short sighted. The dealerships that are the worst offenders, are doing their darnedest to be sleazy and NOT forging long term relationships.

There’s change happening in the way we buy cars. Manufacturers will figure out how to use only good dealerships to offer test drives. You’ll order your car from them. The rest? Well, the manufacturers now know who the sleazy ones are.

Carvana (as soon as they get their financials straight), CarMAx, etc will be used car outlets. The rest? I think the neighborhood used car dealers will flourish in this environment.

I don’t want to hear about it. My backyard this morning:

Yes, and thank you Mother Nature! After a week of temps in the 80s, it started raining Friday at 10:00 am, just as the boys' graduation ceremony started, outdoors of course. And it rained and rained until it turned to snow. I guess something for them to remember, everyone cold and soaking wet, but they did it!
