Looking at old promo material, it appears the bustleback wore a slightly wider than narrowest type whitewall through its run:

This would be OK - too thin might not look right, but gotta be careful not to be too wide.

I was thinking about that line and how the first gen was meant to compete with the smaller more restrained Europeans, but the bustleback went full on neoclassic ostentation. It looks like in 1980 Seville Elegante based at 25K - dear. Just a little more than a MB 300D, but a 300SD would be around 30K then I think, and a 450SEL (only 2 S-class models for several years in the USDM, which created grey market demand) was maybe 40K. When the W126 debuted for MY 1981, a 300SD was closer to 35K, and a 380SEL 45K. Hard to compare, as the 300D was a smaller car, while an S-class was a level higher.

I like that Seville and the two tone black and silver, moonroof, alloys. It still needs whitewalls. I liked the look of the narrower band Michelin XHs that replaced the larger width whitewalls on dad’s 79 Eldorado.

Just-postwar Rolls-Royce Phantom or Wraith, likely a Phantom, maybe IV by the, top of the line.

I believe that for most of Elizabeth's long reign the favored rides of British royals were various Daimlers

it's true the favourite marque for the Royals was mostly Daimlers in the pre-war period , but the car shown is actually the first RR used by the then Princess Elizabeth before her accession.

It's actually the chassis that is unusual - and it is a model with an engine arrangement unique for a Rolls..

    @andys120

The Daimler you posted is a 450DR, which was the limo version of the Daimler Majestic Major (great name!)

Daimler made about 800 of those mostly for the funeral / wedding trades (easy to mix the two trades up sometimes) and they also sold well to Government departments specially our Embassies

    The 450DR was current circa 1960 - 65 I think.

Magnette, are you old enough to recall when the royals used mostly Daimlers, usually LWB versions.?

Elizabeth II may have been the first British monarch to drive her own car. I don't think prior Kings/Queens were much interested in driving themselves.

HRH served as a mechanic in the Women's auxiliary Army during WWII and was laterseen tooling around her country estates in a Land Rover>

I read a story in the last few days about her inviting a visiting Saudi king or prince on a tour of one of her estates, and his extreme discomfort when she surprised him by driving the Land Rover herself, which he assumed would be done by someone else. Of course, at the time women were not permitted to drive in S.A.. You rocked, Elizabeth R...

No I think the change over from Daimlers took place over the fifties so I would be too young for that. I was born in 1956.

I saw the Queen twice at close quarters

First time she was in a Phantom VI coming from the 50th anniversary of the end of WW2 which had been held in St Pauls Cathedral - and in that parade I also saw then vice president Al Gore as his entourage was directly behind - as were the loads of European VIPs too.

Second time was on a deserted Southwark Bridge during the 2002 Golden Jubilee - HM & the Duke of Edinburgh were in the state Bentley (which was new then) coming back from StPauls to avoid the crowds

Best thing we saw on that occasion was the flypast by Concorde with the Red Arrows - we were on Waterloo Bridge to see that ...

This big Daimlers were enormous - the largest were the DE36 but there was a slightly smaller DE27 which was also used for ambulances.

The RR I posted is one of the rare Phantom IV's - they only built about 20 and they were sold - apart from to our royals - to a number of other heads of state, though not always the most enlightened ones...

General Franco of Spain had three, King Idris of Iraq had one and I think another went to the Shah in Iran.

The Phantom IV was the only Rolls with a straight eight engine.

The actual car I posted was used by Elizabeth when heir to the throne, and is still in use now

New York City, 1960. The Plaza Hotel is out of frame to the right, and Bergdorf's is up ahead.

Don't recognize the starlet on McQ's right. I think hey're about to cross Park Ave. and that's a 1960 Ford taxi ahead of them.

The source speculates that it is a M-B 190SL but I'm not sure. The center bulge in the pic looks bigger than what they had to my eye.

I think there are at least a couple of Studie cabs there. I guess they were popular at the time for being an inexpensive and compact car with decent interior space.

Oh yeah those are Studebaker Larks but I don't recall ever seeing a Lark taxi back them.

Mcq's roadster is definitely a 300SL. I doubt he'd be caught dead in something as wimpy as a 190SL.

There was no question that McQueen was in a 300SL. The question was about the car from which the pic was taken, and that was speculated to be a 190SL.

Yeah the hood lump on the camera car doesn't seem like a 190SL. Maybe an Alfa?

Can't miss the 60 Ford taxi, Fairlane or lower spec suiting a taxi (I think a Custom trim existed then).

That '56 Packard is a Four-Hundred. All Caribbeans that year, except a one-off in black I'm familiar with, had white as the primary color. Caribbean Hardtops (only in '56) all had vinyl tops.

The Patrician and Four-Hundred in '56 all had the full-length side trim. In '55 the side trim stopped before the rear quarters.

The '62 Lark drawing I thought was the same one Jo-Han used on their 1/25 model kit, which they reissued in the '80's and I have. Looks like Jo-Han used the Regal and not the Daytona as pictured above. The Daytona had the 'check mark' molding behind the doors.

Is this taken in Northern Ireland? - most of the cars are registered in the Province and the odd one out (which is PZP 92) is from Donegal - which whilst in the Republic is actually the northernmost county of the whole of Ireland..

    I'm guessing Derry

Sorry, by the time I saw my being called for here, I replied this morning without seeing that the information I provided on the '56 Four-Hundred had already been answered. Lots of posts here.

I usually goof on bustleback Sevilles, but the ad fintail provided is as nice of one as I've seen. I especially like the seating. I've grown very tired of the lower seat cushion with multiple tufted buttons. Everybody used that to overkill IMHO.

In the apparent Northern Ireland pic, is the car behind the parked Fiesta at upper right a Mk I Escort with a spoiler? Very desirable car today.

Ford sedan in the foreground beside the Range Rover is an 'Onslow" style Cortina.
