Power Steering Whining

I owned a 2001 Ford F-150 pickup, Supercrew, 2WD,
V8 5.4L Engine. The truck has 7000 miles. I did
not hear the whining noise when I purchased the
truck in July 2000. At both idle or 20 -35 MPH,
when I turn the steering wheel I can hear the
whining noise. The noise disappears as soon as the
wheels return to the straight position. Is this
normal? or am I having a defect power steering
system? I brought the truck to two dealerships,
they both siad that is normal because I have a rear
wheel drive. Appreciate any help you can provide

    Every vehicle I owned with power steering had this noise. This is because rear wheel drive stresses the power-steering greatly.

    Can anyone explain why RWD would stress the power steering?

    I would have thought that the combined forces of steering, driving and/or braking on the front wheels of a FWD car would stress the steering even more.

    My 78 Mercury did that too. Never noticed it on my T-Bird though, but I'll listen more carefully
