Any thoughts on what I should be paying for a 2005 G35x with 38,000 miles in Pittsburgh, PA. It is an auto with premium sound and moonroof. The color is white. Dealer has it stickered for 18,900. How much do I have to play with?
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
Edmunds is pretty close. Can be anywhere from the high $13's to low $14's.
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
Probably have a couple grand to play with . Wholesale is in the $14-15k range.

Thx Volvomax, much appreciated. Hmmm, I'm only a little bit upside down, maybe that Dodge Challenger R/T Hemi Orange isn't so out of reach after all.

I know I know, I should wait. But when I was a young lad, that was the first car I tried out when I was car searching with my dad. I fell in love with it, but my dad's fatherly wisdom was right. I probably wouldn't be here right now if I bought one back then.

    Location: Pittsburgh

2006 Hyundai Sonata LX (no sun roof), 3.3 V6

    Miles: 12,800

    Color: Aquamarine

Condition: As near perfect as you can get, inside and out, EXCEPT, the right mirror needs replaced (you know who did this so I ain’t going down over this. ). About 2 years ago the dealer price to replace it was $264. I would have had it replaced then but I thought the other driver needed more practice backing out of the garage so I waited. So now you know the tale about this.

Tires: Front: brand new, (just replaced today). Rear: 12,800 miles will need replaced in about 5K miles.

Over the phone I’ve been offered $9,400 max if dealer agrees it is as good as I say (yes, I told them about the mirror).

So, what do you experts think about the offer? I think $9,600?

    Thanks,

    jmonroe

I am not the one who has the expertise to comment on the car value. It sounds like you have a nice car that has been well cared for.

How come the tires needed replacing after only 12,800 miles?

This is the kind of car that normally isn't driven aggressively.

That’s what I was thinking also. So I’m going to blame this on Mrs. jmonroe. She must have been taking her beauty to the track without my knowledge while I’ve been working so I could pay for her habit. :surprise:

Seriously, I was a little at fault here. They were worn on the edges because of under inflation. The center was just OK, would have passed PA state inspection but just barely. All the tire shops said that the front end seemed to be OK alignment wise. They were OEM Michelin’s and each of the five tire stores I went to said, “that’s about what you should expect from OEM tires”!! Although I’ve heard that before when I bought tires for my 05’ Hyundai XG 350 at the end of 07’. They lasted 22,000 miles, still not good but better. So, I think this is probably a standard line that tire shops pass out when you go in to buy replacement tires. One tire shop said, “if you had a Cobalt, you’d have been in here at 8,500 miles”.

I think you have identified the culprit. Underinflation is the #1 tire killer. IIt takes a sharp eye to tell when a radial tire is underinflated unless it is half-flat.
I try to keep checking mine with a tire guage, but in our Canadian winters, it is a good day if you can keep your "brass ones" from freezing off....so a regular tire pressure check just may not get done.

I used to be really good at checking the pressure. Used to do it almost every Saturday morning. Not so much anymore. I think I'm going to return to my old ways though. I learned my lesson. Those two tires cost me $300 OTH and the worst part is, I probably won't have that car in two weeks.

My Son was at the junk yard two days ago getting rims for his car so he could swap tires to take it to a 12 turn track in a few weeks. So he calls and says, "they have 2 used tires here for $50 for your car (225 x 50 x 17), would you be interested. The guy can bring them over so I can look at them"? I said, "yeah, take a look at them and if they are OK get them"! Guess what? They weren't. They were the reverse of the ones I had. They suffered from over inflation. Is there a way to weld those things together? :confuse:

I thought for a minute there I could save a buck. Yeah, right.

Condition is very important for a Miata - it's a sign that the car may have been neglected in other ways, also.

When I sold mine I washed it just before each time I showed it to a potential buyer.

I ended up getting $2700 for a 1993 C package with 78k miles, but it needed shocks and the top I replaced about 5 years ago had a couple of small cracks, so it's got 2-3 years left in it at most, which is surprising for a Robbins top. I did patch the cracks with automotive epoxy and showed the flaws to the buyer.

I figured I wasn't going to install another top myself again, too much work, so that's $1100 for the top. The shocks installed would push that bill total up to $2000. That was more than I was willing to spend, plus I had my eye on a power retractable hardtop.

Used PRHT models go fast. Ignore blue book, they're gone the day they're put for sale. I had my eye on 2 of them and one warm weekend and both sold. Soft tops are a dime a dozen.

I figure that will help me on resale, if I ever sell it.

You must have a bead on that new Genesis. $9400. for your Sonata sounds like a pretty good deal to me. Wait and see what VM has to say and then go for it.

Thanks for the reply VM. I'll try to get a little more. Afterall, we've learned if you don't ask you don't get. You car biz guys taught us that.

It's a great car and when I told Mrs. jmonroe if we bought another car I would be trading in her Sonata. She said, "why, if you want a car and that car is for you, why don't you trade your car I like my car just fine"? You have to know her (how could you, I don't :confuse: ) but what she means is she doesn't want to get used to another car.

That Sonata is a very nice, very clean car but it's the one that will go if I can make the deal I want on the Genesis.

It's not like my car (05' XG 350) is a piece of crap, you know. :(

    Wish me luck, thanks again.

I feel your pain. Some women, they just don't understand. Getting my wife to switch vehicles is like pulling teeth.

It is important not to let little details like that get in your way. The upside is that this type of person cares so little that once the new car is there, they won't worry about it anymore. Trust me on this ;->

I would strongly suggest you try putting the car on craigslist for private sale for $10,900... if there's any interest at all, you should come to an agreement.. it'll be good for you ($1k extra) and the new owner will get one heck of a deal. Maybe sales tax rules in your state will mess it up, but I'd try it.

    Good luck,

Funny to see the differences in prices. 1st gen. Miata prices are higher in the NW. I think mainly because of more limited availability. They're a dime a dozen in CA.

I think I'm going to hold onto mine for a while. Going to upgrade the brakes. Maybe even paint it at some point.

I think you are all over it at $9400.

I have a confession to make. I was wrong when I said $9,400, I must have been thinking that’s what I WANTED because when I looked at my notes, there it was as plain as my hand writing would allow, $9,000 even was the dealers offer. That car was worth way more than that and when I got to the dealer, we did some talking. Not much but enough.

If you can get another couple hundred great.

I bumped him up to $9,600 even. Like I said over in SFTSFL, he must have really wanted that beauty for his used car lot.

That V8 Genny is some machine alright. I think I’m going to like it.

Thanks again VM. I just needed to know I wasn’t dreaming about the value of the 06’ Sonata LX.

Hi,This is a follow up post regarding my vehicle purchase for which I had requested info here.

    I traded in a :

    2003 Dodge Durango-SXT- 2WD SUV - 4.7L V8 engine [Texas]
67k miles[ Just did 60k mile service at dealer, cost me $700]
Blue exterior with black cloth interior
    Good condition
New tires with 90% tread left
    Options: ABS,Cruise,Keyless entry,tow package

The minivan I bought was :

2004 Nissan Quest SL model [minivan] -3.5l,auto,FWD
    59 k miles
Red exterior with gray cloth interior
    Good condition
    Tires 70% tread left
Options: ABS,cruise,Keyless entry, trip computer, power sliding door and hatch

The autocheck and carfax reports were clear.

Volvomax had suggested 3k to 3.5k as a OTD offer.
I started at 2k and then 2.5k and finally we agreed to a OTD price of $3000 including ttl.
I am very happy with the deal.Transaction took less than 20 minutes.Very nice pleasant independent used car dealer.
The Quest is much better than Durango- more space,7 seater, stylish, better fuel economy, more bells and whistles.
Plus there was still 1000 miles left of factory B2B warranty as Nissan extended the B2B warranty on the 04 Quest to 5yr/60k.
Thanks Volvomax and all u other folks for your help.

Am trying to find a Ford Mustang GT convertible, in a manual...but really have no idea what they are actually selling for or what to offer for one. Dealers seem to be all over the place. So here is what I am looking for...a rough number would be very helpful.

    2006/2007 Mustang GT Convertible
    Manual
Color: Red, Black or Silver Preferably
    Under 50,000 miles
Options really don't matter...most of them come optioned pretty similarly.
    Philadelphia Area

For an '06 with ~40k miles, $18k should get the deal done. (I imagine asking prices should be right around $20k on these)

Bout $1500-$2k more for an '07 with ~30k.

Knock off $500 if no leather.

    '11 GMC Sierra 1500; '08 Charger R/T Daytona; '67 Coronet R/T; '13 Fiat 500c; '20 S90 T6; '22 MB Sprinter 2500 4x4 diesel; '97 Suzuki R Wagon; '96 Opel Astra; '08 Maser QP; '11 Mini Cooper S

I have a 2006 Mazda6i Sport, 60,300 miles, extended warranty until 100k miles, sunroof, OEM factory remote start, 6CD, iPod adapter. I have also added a cold-air intake, sport exhaust, 18" alloy wheels, HID headlamps, LED tail lamps, and some other things to the car. All the mods are Mazdaspeed accessories and not aftermarket. I know they don't add value though. :(

I am wondering what this car is worth in Baltimore, MD 21229. Also, will it make a difference if I cancel the extended warranty before I trade the car and get my money back for it? It's a Mazda ESP warranty, not an aftermarket one.

    Thanks!

You are right on with asking prices...anywhere from 20-24k asking prices on the 2006's...higher for the 2007's.

    Thanks for the reply.

  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238

  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
Having an extended warranty adds no value to the trade in.
So,cancel the warranty if you trade the car. You don't have to do it beforehand.

Sadly, 60k is a TON of miles in just 3 yrs. Also, your mods don't add any value.
I think the car is a $6-8,000 car.
