    Hello!

I'm thinking of trading my v6 in on an 08 SR5 v8 as I'm going to get a travel trailer (small one) and would like a little more power for the hills.

My 07: 80k miles, 8k on new Kumhos, 50% brakes, white, power moon roof, tow pkg., always garaged and all required maintenance done by dealer, one owner driven, no dogs/kids

Target: 08 4runner Limited, 49k miles, certified, white, tow pkg., 4wd with usual options. Toyota dealer (where I bought mine new) asking 26k.

How might I come out on this deal?

    Thanks for your help! davidq

I'm in metro Atlanta and I'm thinking about trading my 2011 Maxima S bought new in January 2011.

    4DR Sedan
3.5L V6, CVT (only powertrain offered in the Maxima line)
    17,300 miles
    Black/black
S model, so no real options; standard with sunroof, alloys, Bluetooth, Intelligent key
Great condition--garaged at home, parked away from others at work
Original Goodyear Eagle tires and original brakes
All maintenance performed at dealer with receipts
    No damage

Please give me an idea of what I should expect. Edmunds says about $20k but a couple of dealers have been between $18.5-$19.1k.

    Thank you.

Not the expert but my local no haggle dealer has a 2012 Maxima S with 21,000 miles for 21,000. So, I am guessing that you won't get 20,000.

By the way, I think that is a lot of car for the money.

I'll assume you live somewhere north of the mason dixon line.

    About $13,500-$14k on the '07

And that's actually a very low price on the '08. It would fetch around $25k at auction. They are either desperate to dump it or something is wrong with it.

The dealers are correct. Edmunds is high. $20k is what they are doing at auction, which puts trade-in around that $19k number.

Thanks qbrozen. You guessed right, well north of the mason dixon line (chicago)! I may have to lower my sights; along those lines, what would an 08 4R 4wd SR5, not certified with about 55k miles go for. Again, thanks for your help.

That's hard to swallow that there's that much difference between those two trucks. $10k seems like a huge swing for 30k miles and some features. Typically I haven't seen the V8's bringing better money than the V6 in the past...at some points they've actually been lower. Having owned a plethora of Toyota trucks in the past, I was shopping pretty hard for a slightly used 4Runner back in '09. Stumbled onto a Nissan Pathfinder and was more impressed particularly with seat comfort, features, and performance. You might want to give it a look just to make sure you're not missing out on something.
  • qbrozenqbrozen Member Posts: 32,935
Its also a Limited vs an SR5. That alone is an $8k difference new. Add the v8, the mileage difference, 1 year newer .... I can see it.

I was taking into account the model difference with my "some features" comment. Jumping from SR5 to Ltd didn't give you a ton of features....basically just leather, different rims, and climate control. What the Ltd package did give you was access to more features...like NAV, Rear DVD, Prem Sound, Adaptive Suspension, etc. I wonder if the one's you're seeing at the sale are fully loaded. I do see the Ltd on a new one today is an $8K MSRP jump...but it does add more features than the previous model as well.

More info on the Limited: Just has basic limited items, moonroof, leather, wheels, tow pkg, white exterior, but is certified. Been on the market for 30 days. I'm thinking 23-24k; soon will be 5+ years old. For example, after a 3 year lease, with a residual of 58% on 40k, the lessee could have bought for 23k or so 2 years ago! Maybe he did and has now traded it in and done very well. If the dealer bought at auction for 26 and certified it (not likely it would have gone to auction if it was certifiable?)........

Just trying to figure if it would be worth trying to buy it for 23K or so or woujld I be wasting my time.

Thanks in advance for any opinions.

Other: $1200 damage to bumper/front passenger fender, repainted not replaced. Only accident. Needs compressor. Not sure if I should pay the $1100 for repair or just trade in. Wondering how much the compressor hurts trade in value.

    Thanks so much!

Anything that isn't fixed could get knocked off the trade-in value dollar-for-dollar. This is one of those cars you'll just have to shop around. If a dealer decides to take it in and fix it, they will give you more than a dealer that would wholesale it.

q - this Honda sounds perfect for craigslist, don't you think?

Sell it with the bad A/C for a good price and move on. It's an auction piece for any dealer.
  • qbrozenqbrozen Member Posts: 32,935
Well, I think a dealer is going to be at $2500 or so for it.

People are crazy about used hondas, so who knows? Could always shoot for the moon at $5k private party and see what happens.

Well since we're shooting for the moon:

    Boston, MA
    2000 Honda Odyssey EX
    3.5 V6, auto
    FWD
    122,000
White/Gray or for the purists Taffeta/Fern
    Standard EX stuff
    Interior - clean, some stains
Exterior - front bumper cover needs a respray, has small rust above right rear bumper cover, the normal Honda rust spot.
    Tires about 60%
    Brakes about 50%
Maintenance - up to date. Timing belt was never done
Other: front and rear bumper covers replaced about 10 years ago due to soft hit, CEL is on due to bad cat and O2 sensor

Wifey says it's taking up space in the driveway - occasional lumber runs don't justify keeping it anymore.

    Thanks.

Headed back to the dealer this weekend to get the car re-appraised (since its been more than the two-week window they gave me) as I'm taking delivery of my new MINI next Wednesday. Any thoughts on changes in value? Car now has 12,500 miles but everything else, including condition, is the same. Should I still expect to see $22k?

    Thanks
  • czar4czar4 Member Posts: 33
Follow-up to the above - this is a leased car I am trading. My October payment was just due, but I have yet to pay it (was planning to get the car delivetred but am waiting to qualify for the MINI rebate this weekend). Since I am taking delivery next week, does it make sense to make this month's payment or not? I wasn't sure if it was better to make the regular lease payment or if I gained by using that money directly for the total payoff? If there's no advantage, I'd rather pay it today and not pay a week's worth of interest on the payment amount. Thanks for any advice!

    selling privately, i assume.

T-belt never done? Yikes!! You are driving a grenade!

As it sits, you might get $2500-$3k for it. Personally, I'd fix the CEL, perform the full service, paint the bumper, detail it to the 9s, and put it up for sale for $6k. Get at least $5k in the end and you'd still be well ahead.

No more have gone through auction since I last gave you the list, so I have to assume the number will be the same or very close to it.

I'd at least call the current lease company and let them know and see what they say. Personally, I always make that payment because the dealer your are trading it to could delay paying it off and you get a ding on your credit. Its just not worth it.

    '11 GMC Sierra 1500; '08 Charger R/T Daytona; '67 Coronet R/T; '13 Fiat 500c; '20 S90 T6; '22 MB Sprinter 2500 4x4 diesel; '97 Suzuki R Wagon; '96 Opel Astra; '08 Maser QP; '11 Mini Cooper S

I don't know where the numbers will shake out here, but super clean low-mileage versions of these can bring quick money on the private market. There's another forum on the web specializing in TDI's and there's a ton of cars traded through the classifieds section. I've bought and sold a couple on there and always surprised how easy the transactions are on these. Usually cash deals too....people with money like these cars because they're a good investment...as far as cars go. A similar 2010 with 30k miles recently traded hands in a day for $20k. I would bet this one would be similar in price.
  • qbrozenqbrozen Member Posts: 32,935

Accessories are worthless on trade. If going that route, tell him to sell them off separately.

    About $32k on trade.

Private? Whatever you can get over that, right? :P

But, seriously, if living in a state with tax credit on trades, it makes far more sense to trade. That would be $2240 in my state, and very very slim odds I'm getting $34,250 private party.

    Hey Q-
Was at the dealers over the weekend looking at some options. Got a trade number from one and wanted to compare that with what you are showing-

    2008 Acura RDX AWD
    53000 miles
    gray metallic
    beige leather
    no tech pkg
    clean, no immediate needs

Dealer said $14k, and thought that a stretch to $15k would be all the money in the world. This feels a little light to me, but maybe I'm off? What do you think?

He ended up getting $35k for the Rover, so good trade.

Of course he paid $40k out the door for a mid-level Explorer so I'm sure they found some room in that deal.

2 payments left on 2010 Lexus Is250 Awd w/nav, luxury package with 45k mi without any issues
I am planning on getting new Accord or Altima.

Should I go to Carmax, have dealership of new car appraise it, or just turn it in? Now or later?
Are there costs to turning in other than over mileage charges (I may be up to 2000 mi over by end of Dec)?

It has cruise, heated seats, leather, and OBC. The only problems I found were wear on the left bolster of the driver's seat and a rear window that could stand replacing. I'm thinking @$8,000.
