ok, the Impala is pretty much down at that $12k mark. Still a solid price on it.

Thank you. I am looking at potential replacements for my commuter. Never hurts to look and see what there is before I absolutely have to do something. The Malibu was good, 4-cyl gives about 32-33 highway. But the Impala with the V6 and six speed trans has the same drivetrain as the new 2014. 30 mpg and 300 hp, car was a sleeper. Dated design with a modern powertrain.
  • sebring95sebring95 Member Posts: 3,241
I had a rental Impala with that powertrain awhile back and was very impressed. Very relaxed, shift points were good, and strong engine that averaged around 30mpg. The rest of the car....it wasn't bad on the highway but out on the two-lane back roads it's probably one of the worst handling vehicles currently sold. The Malibu does a little better on gas and drives just as well on the highway...better everywhere else. All that Malibu power isn't really necessary on the highway so it almost doesn't make sense to buy it. The new one seems to be much nicer all around...one of the office secretaries just picked one up and loves it.

This is for my paralegal/right arm/all around savior of my business world

She's got this and is looking to, most likely, trade:

    2010 Nissan Altima 2.5S
    pearl white over grey cloth
All the standard goodies, plus it has some extras:
    moonroof
    bluetooth phone/audio
    rearview camera
    dual auto climate
    factory alloys
    Obviously 2.5 4 cyl/CVT
    It's basically a 2.5SL without the leather
Maintenance is current, 2 small (1/2") scratches on the rear bumper from her son loading luggage into the trunk
    No hits, runs or errors.
The kicker, as a result of her 120 mile daily commute: 80,000 BIG miles.

She's looking to trade on a 2013 or 14 of the same thing: pearl white 2.5SV

The dealer is hitting her at $7,000
We're in Brunswick, GA, on the coast between Savannah and Jacksonville, FL

    What say the masters?
  • qbrozenqbrozen Member Posts: 32,891
Sounds like the dealer is light on it, even with those miles. Unless it is a real dog, they are still fetching up to $10k at the block with 75k-90k miles. If it is really nice, good tires and brakes, other than those couple of scratches, I don't see why $8500 shouldn't be possible, especially from a Nissan dealer.

Here are just a few examples in your neck of the woods.

    09/18/13 NASHVILL Regular $10,500 78,797 SILVER
    09/03/13 NASHVILL Lease $9,300 79,487 BLACK
    09/12/13 TAMPA Lease $9,800 79,694 WHITE
    09/04/13 NASHVILL Lease $9,600 82,375 WHT PERL
    09/12/13 TAMPA Lease $9,500 83,132 RED

Thanks for the help Q. She was ready to do the deal today, but the dealer started moving numbers around again, and generally playing games, so she walked. This is the same dealer she's bought her last 4 cars from, and with the miles she puts on, she's buying every 3 years.

So, the hunt continues. I'll pass the info along.

20K miles - very good condition.
    Premium 1 package - orig msrp $58.5K

Does anyone have any info on current direct trade in offers or have info on recent auction pricing on the vehicle? Thank you
  • qbrozenqbrozen Member Posts: 32,891
There are actually quite a few out there. They are trading right in that $34k-35k mark.

Trade in? Well, this is probably one that could defy logic. I would guess that most non-MB dealers would be a bit scared of it and hit you at $31k-32k. An MB dealer would be smart to keep it below $34k, but you never know. They may fall in love and want to CPO it, if its eligible, and offer as much as 35k.

Only 28,000 miles . Dealer is quoting 14000. Fair price or should i expect some more or less.

I think that's fair. The only other car even close was rated above average with 36k miles and got $14,400 at the block. So they are definitely pricing yours as the best of the best.

    Hi All!

I just wanted to check in on the prices for a 2011 Audi Q5 2.0T. I've found two in the Portland area that fall into what I'm looking for. Below are the details:

    Both Cars:
    Location: Portland OR
    Year/Make/Model: 2011 Audi 2.0T Premium Plus
    Engine: 2.0Turbo 8-Spd Auto
    Driveline: AWD

    Car A:
    Mileage: 45500
    Color: Meteor Grey Pearl (Charcoal)
Major Options: Navigation System, Pano-Sunroof, LED/Xenon Lights, 19" premium wheels.
Condition: Factory Dealer CPO Vehicle, so should be in "Excellent" condition.
Other: Clean History, 1-owner; purchased and maintained from same dealer. I'm assuming that it was a trade-in for a new Audi; was certified and put up for sale 2 weeks ago. Remaining Factory warranty and 100k CPO warranty until 8/2016. The dealer is asking $34900.

    Car B:
    Mileage: 39400
Color: Quartz Grey Metallic (Medium Silver)
Major Options: Navigation System, Pano-Sunroof, LED/Xenon Lights, 19" premium wheels, Tow Package, Bang & Olufsen sound system.
Condition: Independent Dealer says "Exceptional" condition, service/maint is up-to-date.
Other: Clean History, 1-owner. Looks to have been purchased on 6/10/2013 at Pacific region auto auction; went up for sale on 6/15/2013. Factory warranty good until 4/2015 or 50k miles. The dealer is asking $34995.

I'm not looking to low ball them on price, just want to make sure I know all the facts for negotiations and pay a fair price.

Thanks for any info you can provide! :-)

    Location:Houston, Texas
    Year/Make/Model: 2004 Ford F250
    Body Style: Lariat Crew Cab
    Engine: 6.0 diesel, automatic
    Driveline: RWD
    Mileage: 87k

Needs new tires, front tires would not pass state inspection. Mechanical condition appears good, drives and shifts okay, AC blows cold. The leather is in good condition, the paint looks good.

It is a one owner, elderly driver who is being forced to sell as he can no longer drive.

How much would this bring at auction?
  • qbrozenqbrozen Member Posts: 32,891
Given the options, these seem to be around that $28-29k zip code at auction.

Knowing that, $33,500 feels better to me on the CPO one. I wouldn't go over $32k on non-CPO, personally.

    miles are low. About $9k-9500.

Wouldn't be surprised if a dealer would step up on it, though. Hell, carmax may even hit it at $10k.

    Thanks for the info, qbrozen!

That is pretty much the price range I am aiming for ($32-33.5k). Hopefully the dealers will feel they are fair prices too. (I'm sure not looking forward to paying the negotiation game.)
  • sebring95sebring95 Member Posts: 3,241
I would think private sale on that all day long. I just easily sold an '05 F-250 XL gasser with 180k HARD miles for $9k. I might have trouble here in OH with a 2wd but in TX that should bring good coin with such low miles. I could probably get $15k for it here and it would be gone in a couple days. Used trucks are nutso right now.

No. They are actually buying a 2013 X5. The BMW dealer actually is giving them more than the Porsche dealer. The Porsche dealer offered $35K @ 1st, then said they were "all in" @ $36K. The BMW dealer offered $36K & said they are "all in" @ $37,500. I was hoping to get $39K for it, but there's only so much they are willing to pay since they are selling the new X5 at invoice minus $2K incentive. Can't win em all.

They aren't the only Porsche Dealer, but after thinking it through, my parents decided they'd like the scheduled maintenance plus they like the way it drives & have a great relationship with the service manager at their local BMW dealer.

ah. So strange. Really sounds like both dealers are selling it to a wholesaler, who will then send it off to auction. When you work in a 3-tiered system, it gets ugly for the original seller (your folks, in this case).

that's what happened with my BMW and my previous V70. They were passing them off to wholesalers and the trade wasn't up where I wanted it to be. But then go back to my Infiniti, and that dealer thought it would do great on his lot, so gave me WAY more than I expected. That wound up sitting on his lot for quite a while. No idea what ultimately happened to it.

So, sometimes you win, sometimes you lose.

    Hi:

Just found this forum mention elsewhere and am thrilled it exists. Bought this car certified used in 2010 with 37k miles and am looking to get a newer Accord in the next 6 months.

Trying to decide if it is worth trying to trade-in or private sale. I plan on taking it to the dealer I bought the car from to see what they will give me but am looking for a benchmark to make sure I am not getting ripped off. They constantly email me wanting to buy the car but I still owe money on it and I want to make enough on it to pay it off and have some left over for a down payment.

    Details below. Thanks in advance!

    Location: Westchester County, NY
    Year/Make/Model: 2007 Honda Accord LX
    Body Style: 4dr Sedan
    Engine: 4 cylinder, automatic
    Driveline: FWD
    Mileage:83,001
Color: Gold exterior (I think they call it Desert Sand or something); Tan cloth interior
    Major Options: Standard options
Condition:A couple of very minor dings on exterior. Interior is not pristine but about what would be expected for light tan fabric. No rips or anything like that.
Tires - Replaced all four about a year or so ago
Brakes - Fronts redone in 2012, rears about to be done
Maintenance - I work part-time for a mechanic so I get it regularly maintained
    Other: N/a

Its going to depend on what the dealer wants to do with it. You would think a Honda dealer would want to hold onto one with low miles like this to sell themselves, in which case they might step up to $7500-$8k on it.

Just got a new job with my County and am making much less money. I could keep my car, but it just doesn't make sense to keep paying it off with what I'm making. Food is more important(LOL). Want to trade in, use some of money towards a lease(not too much) and pocket the rest to supplement my income til my next pay grade.

    Long Island, NY
    2010/Infiniti G37x w/ 16,700 miles Dark Grey/Black interior
    Premium Package
    Navigation

Near Excellent condition, no body work, windshield replaced last week due to rock chip, brakes all replaced 3,000 miles ago(Back had 2mm left on them and got them to replace the fronts as a warranty issue). Warranty good til 8/2014

Was looking for a real world value since it has such low mileage. Of course I know that if I trade it in I will get less money than if I sold it privately, but I also know to take what a dealer offers and add tax to it to see what I would save on taxes on the new car. Question is, the amount of tax on my trade in will surpass the tax owed on a lease, what happens with the excess money in taxes on the trade-in? Do they apply as down payment? Or do I just eat it?

    Thanx!

tax savings on a trade is a credit, not a refund, so you only benefit by as much as you use on the new car.

As for your car, about $21k-22k for a 2-door or about $19k-19,500 for a 4-door.

Just curious about a price for my '06 Honda Civic.

    Ft. Lauderdale
    2006/Honda/Civic LX
    4 Door Sedan
    1.8 Engine
    FWD
    45k
    Galaxy Gray/Gray
Alloys Off A '05 Civic SI
    New Front Pads/Rotors Last Week
    New Rubber 1 Year Ago
Vehicle Looks brand New But Rear Bumper Has Some Nicks From Garage Door; Up To Date On Maintenance; New Headliner; Amp In Trunk With Newish Speakers And Tweeters.

A really nice vehicle that should probably not go to a dealer but straight onto Auto trader. I know this is a 7 year old vehicle, almost 8 but the miles are low and I have kept it up nicely and get stopped frequently and asked if it's this years model. Would love to get $11k but know that is foolish. What say the master here as I'd really love something new and FUN!!

    That's an automatic, right?

I have nothing to compare it to.

the above average examples with 75k miles are doing $7500-$8k. Those will wind up retailing for damn near $11k, so I don't see why you couldn't do that with yours.

Yep, I don't row my own gears so a slushbox it is. Not that I would sell right now, but for the right figure, I'd do it and either get something a bit older for a couple of years or just get new/cpo. Was online this afternoon looking at what the local Yota dealer has used and he has a lot of nice stuff for under $20k, even a nice 3 Series , a 2010 I think with miles in the low 30's in a light blue color...very sweet! Also had a bunch of Jetta SE's with miles under 20k in the mid to high teens. Like I say, not that I am actively looking but for the right price, I'd cut the Civic from the herd in a heartbeat. I've done the Honda thing now and I'm done with them...great reliability though and I know it'll always turn over when I start her up, but to be honest, I do not wait until the battery is near dead, by year # 3, I am usually throwing another one under the hood as I do not want the hassle of having to call roadside. And to be honest, the South Florida heat usually eats batteries every 3 to 4 years anyways so I just do it a little before it needs to be done but I like preventative maintenance done as I just sleep better this way. Foolish, maybe yes, maybe no but hey, it's my dough and we do not live an extravagant life by any stretch here...we live below our means and owe no one anything. Would love to leave the kids something eventually but if not, such is life and they all know this up front.

While trying to decide how much more use I want to get out of the warranty on my current vehicle, I spent some time wandering the lots in my small town. Being in rural South Georgia, once I got past all the trucks and SUVs, I found a few things of interest, primarily this:

    2010 Acura TL
    3.5 V6, 5AT, FWD
    NOT the SH-AWD
    NO Tech pack
    champagne over beige leather
    31,3xx miles
I think everything else is standard:
dual auto climate, heated front seats, slider
    AM/FM/XM stereo

Carfax shows a one owner out of suburban Philadelphia, by way of the Honda sale at FAAO.
Overall in above average shape. The bumpers show a little evidence of life on the streets of Philadelphia, but otherwise nothing a visit to the detail shop won't fix.

The dealer is 75 days into this, having bought it at the end of July, so they are getting motivated to move it along.
Asking price is $23,185, which seems to be in line with the others on offer in Jacksonville, FL.

This is at THE Honda dealer in Brunswick, Georgia, 60 miles north of Jacksonville.

hmmm... well, there was one in PA that is similar to this that sold 3 weeks ago for $18,800; however, there is another with the same miles and color that sold 2 weeks ago in Orlando for $20,400.

Looking across the numbers, it looks like the average is around $20k.

So their price is reasonable enough. Any extra off is just bonus.

    Thanks for the help.

The Carfax shows it "offered for sale" at the same dealer that has it on 8/27/13, but doesn't show where they got it from. My guess would be Orlando, because this dealer is part of the big group based in Atlanta (that starts with an S, and the family sold their namesake dealers except this one to Asbury), and since they're based down here, PA is a long way to go for an auction.

VIN ends in 024305 if that's any help.

I'm glad they're reasonable on their numbers, unlike the Hyundai dealer that quoted me $8,000 OVER their website price on a non-CPO Genesis. Needless to say, I won't be going back.
  • qbrozenqbrozen Member Posts: 32,891
well, who knows? They could have gotten it on trade or from another dealer. I do wonder what the percentage of vehicles is that actually go through manheim. Would be a good number to know.

    Good luck with your purchase.

I am looking at purchasing a used 2010-13 i Grand Touring and s Grand Touring. I am curious as to what auction results are for these vehicles as well as general idea of a fair dealer retail value. I understand these vehicles depreciate fairly rapidly. Oh and I am in CA.

You made me curious, and I did a little online searching.

This article which appears to be from 2010 says:
    http://hffo.cuna.org/12433/article/1170/html

“Nearly 10 million used vehicles were sold through auctions last year, according to Manheim Auctions”.

And Wikipedia says, “In 2005, about 44 million used cars were sold in the U.S.”

This article from February of 2013 says:
    http://editorial.autos.msn.com/blogs/autosblogpost.aspx?post=91bf2fef-50e6-4926-- 8f34-32fc16cbfebc

“About 40.5 million used vehicles changed hands last year.”

From this, we can infer that about 1 in 4 used cars go through the auctions.

but we can't infer those were specifically Manheim auctions.
The quote was from Manheim, but they just said "through auctions," not "through OUR auctions."
    I'm a very picky fact checker. ;)

About $12k-$13k auction for the i with 35k-40k miles. Figure $15k-16k retail. Add a whopping $3k for the S.
