50,000 miles, captains chairs, heather mist (silvery gold) exterior, new tires, tinted windows, no dents or dings and located in MN.
Could I do significantly better selling it myself? Thanks!
It also has a spare on it now, because I punctured a tire. If this would make a difference, please let me know.
If I could get a trade-in price as well as a private party sale price, I would be appreciative. Thanks.

Seattle area.
I owe about 6300 on it, and am getting trade in quotes ranging from 3,500-4,000. Do you think I could sell it for enough to at least pay it off?
if so, what's the best way to handle getting the title to the buyer (having to get it from the finance co. first)
Thanks,
Megan
We have some paint fade, but you say it's clean and it's a EBauer.
If it's knee deep in rubber .. and the vehicle is "stand tall" inside and out, other than a few parking lot kisses, a scratch here and there and everthing works, then you are getting ALL the money and then some .. the biggest holdback here, it's a 2WD.
If you owe $6,3 ... you need to hit Retail rd. and ask $5,900 and see double nickel's...
Good luck ...
Terry.
It's a 00, it's a 4WD, auto, lotsa help there .. and black in Jersey, works!
I don't have to tell Ya, the miles will flat kill it .. so, in and around that $9,5/$10 figure, if it's a clean one.
Terry.
Here's the tricky part: The ABS light is on because once I had to jump-start it, and apparently the ABS computer got fried in the process. Brakes work fine, just aren't anti-lock anymore. Also, the horn doesn't work on the steering wheel anymore, so my mechanic made a little button on the steering column that activates the horn.
For these reasons, I don't want to sell it outright. Do I have a prayer in getting anything for trade? My mechanic suggested that I might do better to donate it and write off the blue book (which she said is around $6,700?).
Thanks!
Vehicles are really a matter of opinion .. likes and dis-likes, real and the perceived..
But, perhaps a few of these might work for you .. Buick Regal or Lesabre, Pontiac Bonneville SE or SLE, Toyota Camry LE, Volvo S70, Nissan Maxima, a real clean, low mileage Aurora .. there is a ton of em' out there.
The best way for you to see if you will love this next vehicle is to drive it -- that doesn't mean to drive it around the block with a salesman. That means to drive the vehicle for an afternoon, take it over your lumps and bumps, your neighborhoods and get the feel touch and smell of it. Remember, it's your money .. and your vehicle, so find out about it first ...
The figures should work out with you getting your best price, then minus your trade, plus any taxes and flee's (and any pay-offs) .. then minus any rebates which are quite big right now.
Good luck ... and let us know.
Terry.
You should see around $2,5 maybe $3 on a trade, depending on where and who the dealer is.. most domestic Dealers might not know what this "tank" is. l.o.l. and you might see alot less, but these old "dudes" still bring $$.
I wouldn't be afraid to sell this on Retail Rd. --- be "straight up" .. just have all the records and history on the front seat, if it will pass with a good Tech, not a "shade tree" but a real Tech, I wouldn't be afraid of the ABS light to a buyer and he/she is fully aware of it.
Have it detailed, make it look like a 99 and you should see an easy $4,500 ...
I'm not sure how the Tax deduct works ... but, $6,700 .....? I don't think so.
Terry.
Thanks for your advice. Re the $6,700 value, my mechanic looked up the insurance value on it (not sure if it's blue book or black book or what...). As I understand it, if you donate a vehicle to a charitable organization, you can write off the full value of it, which translates to roughly one-third tax savings. IOW, if I were to claim a value of $6,000 on my tax return, I'd be saving $2,000 in taxes.
I live in the Boston area, so hopefully area dealers will appreciate the "tank." I'd be happy to get $2.5 - $3k for it.
Thanks again, Terry.
-- Madgie
I feel, that if it is showing some rust..etc.. it is closer to the $1,500-2K area. On older Volvos, Condition seems to affect them more than mileage to a degree...
Retail? $4K easily. Probably see $4,500 out of it.

Now, here's the preliminary findings:
We didn't test drive it as another salesman had taken the keys home. They had just gotten it in on trade and the saleman told me it hadn't been through service yet. The tires look like they needed to be replaced. I pulled the dipstick and it looked rusty up top and the oil looked like it hadn't been changed in a while. The trans oil wasn't a nice bright red, but not really brown either.
I'm going to call an independent Volvo mechanic on Monday to have him look at it. Off the top of my head here's what I would like from the dealer:
New tires, Oil Change, Trans Fluid flush, and a discount off of the Volvo Certified Warranty (about 900 per saleman).
Any comments?
Thanks,
Peeter
This is typical, trade in a vehicle with dirty oil in the engine and tranny, -0- for rubber and want Blue Book plus 10% .. l.o.l.
Miles are just a little stiff , not bad though for the year, right color, good toys .. needs $250 in rubber, $200 in service and $100 to make it look new. I'm thinkin, the dealer has $15/$15,5 and a hill to climb to make it puuuuurfect.
If it turns out nice ... this could be a great purchase for you, when they are done, they should have $16 or so in it. $17,900 would be a great price with the warranty ...
Let's see what happens ...
Terry.
These silly things get all the money .. new used, stolen, etc. ..l.o.l.. on the retail side, $17 -- depending on were you live, "trade tax savings" might end up being the same instead of selling it ..
Terry.
Whooof., I thought I was strange with the refrigerator magnets from around the world. I have some friends that work on the Jag project, and every time they go to London, I'm on the horn "hey don't forget my frig magnets" .. l.o.l....
I'm always going through the Philly paper lookin' for a deal. And that's a great article .. there is "bunches" (get it ..?) of nice vehicles out there, coming off lease or trade that are just super buys for the consumers out there.
Infiniti Q45 is just one, Lincoln LS's, Town Cars, Caddy's, Subaru's, Jags just too name a few ... most are under a factory warranty for the next 2 or so years --- and they can be had for as low as, half the price depending on the vehicle. With rates so darn cheap right now, especially at the Credit unions .. and the banks trying to compete for that business ... ghee, it's just a good decision.
Not knocking any vehicles, but I would prefer to drive a loaded up pre-owned LS V8, than a new Accord EX V6 or Camry XLE V6 for less money .. and just about get the same rate at the local lender as the factory program .. but, it's just personal taste.
Frank .. great post.
Terry.
Well, its got 30k .. it's a 3dr .. if it's clean, no kisses and Mcdonalds hasn't invaded yet -- you should see "around" $7,5 on a trade, so you are in great shape.
Me personally .. I would be lookin' to cut it from the herd now. Once the used car market starts to adjust in Sept, October .. there will be oodles of Focus's out there .. as there is already.
As far as what vehicle to trade for .. again, that's personal taste. I like that new Mazda and of course the PT has done just super. Like I have mentioned before, take em' out for a afternoon, NOT around the block and without a Salesperson yakking at ya..
And like I always say .. Always buy and drive what You like ... it's your $$$.
Hey, good luck ....
Terry.
What's the approximate value of a '98 F150 Supercab XL V6 with a 5sp manual(!!)?
There's a couple around here for sale; say 60k miles, clean, simply equipped but with the essentials (AC pwr w/l/m cruise) and not much else. 3rd door, as the 4dr only became std in '99 (yech). One's from a private party, the other I found on a dealer lot (local screamer-ad type, oh boy).
I gots to get me a stick again, one way or the other.
BTW Terry, the Sienna still is great and she put 4k miles on it in 5 weeks!!
Thanks in advance as always,
-Mathias
East Lansing, MI
For starters on the Bimmer .. the miles are stiff, stiff, stiff ... So if, it's nice and clean .. and looks 01, it should get around $18/$18,5ish on a trade.
Now on the Audi, the miles are low for the year .. it's a Quattro, and a 2.8. So, you get a little help there. This one should $10/$10,5+ all day long, if it's a baby doll ..
The Nissan ... well, it's got bunches of miles .. it's a handshaker and a XE - uummm, maybe a ghee whiz or so ...
Terry.
I will be up there next week .. maybe I can use her for a driver .. l.o.l...
It's a strange bird .. it's a Supercab with a V6, a handshaker and it's a
XL --- sounds like an Ad vehicle (new) too me.
Miles are average for the year, I don't have to tell ya what the handshaker does .. and the 6 just flat kills it in a SC .. Can't have a dime in it more than $9,5 (if it is his Mother in laws .. l.o.l.) .. I'm going to guess he has it the paper for $11,900, would cut it from the herd for $10 or less -- Me, personally at the block .. I wouldn't pay more than $9,0 for it unless it was pre-sold. You do love those sticks .. -- So how are you ..?
Terry.
Edmunds TMV (trade-in) = $16,000
NADA = $17,200
KBB = $14,150!!!! (they show private $17K and Retail of $20K... $6K spread seems outrageous, this isn't a Daewoo!
AutoTrader and other sites have individuls and dealers offering similar equipped and mile cars for $18,500-20,000.
Sure they want room to drop, but what are my chances of getting at least $16-$16,500 on a trade?
I am happy to hear you think it's a good deal to buy off a three year lease. Even though I am not intertested in the high end autos because I know they will take a beating here on South Philly Streets plus it's easier to park the small cars but will look into a Suburu.
Thanks again.
Frank
2002 VW Jetta 1.8T, 15K highway miles, cool white/black leather, Tiptronic, Leather Pkg., Sport Luxury Pkg., Monsoon, all records for service from dealer. Little tiny chip on back bumper, repaired with touch-up paint.
Also, one tire gone, spare on. Will this affect my value by much?
In Baltimore, Md. Thanks.
Sorry you got missed, it must have been between the cooking lessons and the Bowie Concert .. l.o.l..
So, we have a 02 with 15k, GLS? .. right? - miles are a little stiff .. but, it's the right color and it has all the right stuff. So, based on what you are telling us, it sounds clean... in and around that $15ish figure and don't worry about the spare ...
Terry.
The big killer here will be the .. no slider, no leather. When God invented the Volvo's he thought they should have a those 2 options .. l.o.l..
So, you are going to be in and around the $14ish figure on a trade .. I know people have these in the papers for a lot more -- and you can still see those Ad's in August .. cus' they will still be there .. l.o.l..
You can always ask anything you want for a vehicle -- the big difference is: Wanting .. and getting.
Me, I would detail this puppy out, nice big Fat Five liner Ad, in the largest newspaper in your area for $16,900 .. and let some nice Rocket Scientist take it off my hands for $15,7/$16,5 ..
Good luck .. let us know ..
Terry.
Thanks,
Stacy
Hey, don't you know you can buy these for like $200 over cost ..? l.o.l...
Yeah right .. anyway, what can I say, it's new. Navs are good for about a nick or so .. lets figure around $29ish .. and depending on your area and color, that might be a tinge on the light side.
Terry.
1996 Black Honda del Sol Si
a/c
manual
67,000 miles
Good condition
brand new tires.
there were scratches on the hood, trunk and rear quater panel when I bought new - had them repaint them - I have paperwork
Should I replace the headliner and then try to trade it in at a Saturn dealer, or trade in as is?
Tom
9-3 SE 5 door, 5 speed, Metallic Silver, all the options. 50,000 miles. Needs 3 new tires. Have 2 good snow tires and 2 that need to be replaced as well. A few minor wear and tear scratches and chips. Interior in great condition. May be looking at an additional $300-500 in repairs and $750 in additional mileage. Original value 31,200. I paid 13,494 in monthly payments and put about 1,800 down. The residual is 16,817. Chase has offered me the car for 15,033 plus tax less security or $15,889. I know they will only get 13,500 at auction but they won't go any lower than 15,033 because of their residual insurance.
Any thoughts? I originally wanted to buy it and re-sell so I could get a new 9-5.
Thanks.
Our Soccer coach is getting ready to trade his Caddy in. It's a real nice, real clean 97 Deville with 32k, it's polo green and has the tan leather. No sunroof, but it has the chrome wheels, cd,etc. He bought it new and he takes wonderful care of it, everyone comments how nice it looks winter or summer, new tires at 30k.
The Lexus dealer told him it might be worth $9,500 or so, I said he was crazy. I said he needs to shop around or sell it outright, what do you think it's worth?
As always, thank you!
Your the Best.
It's the right color combo for Philly.. so, if he can't see $10,5/$11 on a trade, then he just needs to go to another Lexus dealer that hasn't been in the Import Biz too long, sometimes their brains get a little soggy.
If he decides to go down to Retail Rd .. $13,900 in the paper and grab an easy $12,8/$13,5
Hey good luck .. and let us know ...
Terry.
Depending on the area, the size, vehicle and condition .. $100 is "about" an average for quality detail work. That's the guys that work with quality materials, great Swheel buffers and Xstractors for the interiors ..
You can call the Dent Wizard, and they can pop all the small little parking lot kisses out for less than $100 or so.
Terry.
Probably in and around the low $20 figure ...
Terry.

Thanks for any info
Well, miles are just about ok .. handshaker kicks it out a bunch .. So, if it's clean, knee deep, looks on the new side, then he probably put $12 and some change in it. Add the service, pack, Certify it .. a little this, a little that. Then before it hit's the table, I gotta think around $13,5ish -- I gotta think, he will cut it from the herd for "around" the mid $14's ..
They probably just realized that handshaker wasn't going to move in 15 minutes ... l.o.l....
Let us know what happens ...
Terry.
Thanks,
Larry
This one has loooow miles .. if it's clean, no kisses, no invasions, air will blow you into the next suburb and it needs -0- then it not a bad price --- but, I have a funny feeling that $9 drops it in the driveway .. so, lets see what happens ...
Terry :-)
I have another question. Does the aggressive discounting on discontinued models such as the 2002 Infiniti G20, Mazda Millenia, Olds Intrigue etc. make for good used car buys? How long before the price pressure trickles down to the used market. I'm looking for a 99/00 model and plan to keep it for a while.
