Also, regarding the seats -- the dealer ordered new back rest frames for both front seats. Parts are on special order, and I don't know when they will arrive. Hope that fixes the problems with my seats!

re s70 2000 tranny's..mine has been fine so far.. but, does that action code 593 apply to all s70 auto 5 speeds, even if your not experincing problems?
thanks
My car had the following problems (none of which I was aware of until after I bought it):
1. Bad switch on transmission to shift from s/e/w modes;
2. broken torque shaft mount on top of engine (this is a common problem and easy to overlook);
3. Turbo oil return line was leaking (also common problem);
4. Oil leak from drain plug (existing copper washer was not factory aluminum, and probably hasn't been changed in a while);
5. At 60,000 miles, car needs a major service, which costs around $500.00. You can tell if the 60,000 mile service has been done by looking at the large fuel filter under the car, just in front of the rear axle. The original fuel filter from the factory is covered with protective black undercoating-when they replace the filter for the 60,000 mile service, it won't have any undercoating on it. You'll also need a transmission service at this mileage;
6. I paid $20,700 for my car. I live in South California. I think I paid right around wholesale book. I 've been shopping for a few months, and these cars don't appear to be widely available at discount prices unless you are buying a base model with no options.
This is my sixth Volvo. Also owned a 88 760 turbo wagon, 86 240 wagon, 83 240 dl wagon, '78 240GT and a 1965 P1800. Still have the P1800 and the 760 turbo. These are great cars, however, they do have their quirks. I think that I have enough knowledge about the cars, and enough ability to keep them running most of the time without having to spend too much on maintenance and repairs. The new V70 is causing me some anxiety though, with all the new computer diagnositic tools needed to service it, my days of wrenching on my cars may be drawing to a close. Good luck.
I don't know if that action code 593 applies to all 2000 volvo s70 automatics. When I called my service manager about it, he laughed at me, and put me through to the mechanic's voicemail. Apparenlty the mechnanic called some service line and they said to install this "action code" (whatever that is; I think is it a software upgrade). In any event, it probably wouldn't hurt to ask your dealer about it. I mostly noticed the problem at slower speeds, the car would jerk hard when it downshifted to a lower gear. Kind of like if you are going to fast in a manual and you downshift and get a swift kick. It also sounded funny when it happened. I've only driven the car twice since I've gotten it back, but have not noticed the problem again (yet...)
Good luck.

Thanks,

I have over 85000 k on my '98 S70 T5 and love the car despite its well-chronicled minor deficiencies. (The sockets have been replaced and lamp burnout is greatly reduced.) I plan on keeping the car so would appreciate things to look out for as mileage increases.

Torque shaft-this is the donut shaped motor mount located toward the rear of the engine, on top of the motor, just to the right of center facing the windshield. The part cost under $13.00 at Volvo, but is a pain to install. I did it myself, using a large washer, bolt and nut, to "draw" the piece into the mounting bracket. The volvo dealers use an underhood portable hydraulic press to install, or remove the bracket and use a fixed press to install the new part. My costs for washers and bolt to install it was under $2.50. You can use an aftermarket engine mount from IPD for around $25.00 to $30.00, won't need to press it into the bracket, but it gives a more rigid mount that factory mount which might increase strain on your drive train.
2. Leaking turbo oil return line. I followed the directions posted at volvospeed.com and repaired this myself. Simple fix, took under 30 minutes, beginning to end, parts cost under $3.00 full retail at volvo dealer.
mjhalligan, this is a well documented issue discussed here and on the BrickBoard (www.brickboard.com) at length many times in the past. The '98 70 series cars shipped with bad turning signal sockets. There is a Technical Service Bulletin for the replacement of the sockets. Once the sockets are fixed the turning signal issue is fixed. Have you been replacing bulbs yourself or has your dealer? If your dealer has been doing all these replacements you should change dealers immediately.
If you use DRLs your headlights will burn out prematurely due to excessive use. I've been using them for years and don't expect much more than 14 - 18 months of use before I replace a set. Hope this helps.
Good luck.

At 46000 miles, no problems to mention. Hell ever had a Chrysler Cirrus? Now there's some serious problems!
Volvos Rule! Now if I can just find a '96 850R with no miles, life can end happily.

is my first Volvo and I'm really enjoying the ride
comfort(seats in particular). Bought it after my wife was rear-ended and our Chrysler New Yorkerwas totalled(bought it mainly for the safety
factor as my wife was injured). I now have 4,000 miles on the car and there is an annoying rattle
coming from the front dash(mainly when going over
bumps in the road, manhole covers etc). Brought it to the dealer and they couldn't find the problem. It seems to get worse as the weather gets
colder(New England) and as mentioned is almost like a metallic sounding rattle.Has anyone else experienced this noise or problem and if so what is that annoying sound.Thanks

citizens, I can think of 2 things to check. First, the next time you hear the squeak open you glove compartment door and see if the noise goes away. If it does then it is the lock mechanism and is a quick fix for the dealer. The other possibility that I know of is a thin sheet of plastic that may be in between the dash and the window at the base of the glass. It is used as a part of the process of installing the glass and sometimes an installer may not remove it which eventually leads to squeaking. You'll probably have to get a flashlight and shine it down at the base of the glass (try from outside the car first and then inside). If you find a relatively small piece of plastic film (translucent) you can extract it with forceps or similar device. I hope your squeak turns out to be one of these simple causes.
Good luck.

p.s. - I just remembered that there is the possibility that your rear-view mirror is loose. Check your mirror and see if it has any play in it.
The dealer from whom I bought the car has changed ownership and the new policy seems to be rape, pillage and plunder. Because the car is 4,000 miles past warranty - no help from Volvo. Looked into selling the car - my $38,000 car is now worth less than $19,000 in the market. My Chevy Suburban has held its value far better. Volvo buyers beware!
I am ruined for life on VOLVO!
I am buying a 1998 automatic sedan S70 GTAS with 35K miles. Extras include leather, winter package, CD player, tracs system, power seat
on drivers side, sunroof, alloy wheels. This is a leased vehicle.
The offer on the table is $20,500. Do you think this is a good
deal? After I do this deal, I'll come back and let you know
what happened. Txs, Mitch
Anyone has a problem with the turn signal that does not blink or just stays on? Had it replaced once by the dealer but the problems seems to start again.
Any help is appreciated. Thanks
Thanks.

Anyway, I love the seating, roominess, acceleration, stereo, brakes, handling, safety features, and the low insurance rate. Also, its very comfortable on long road trips (like the 500+ miles for Atlanta, GA to Dayton, OH).
I hope this passage isn't too long, but I wanted to help anyone who currently has one or is thinking of buying one (the 2000 S70 is the last one though--replaced by 2001 S60). And hopefully, I won't have the many problems that the 98' owners have had!
My father has a '98 T-5 and has had most of the same problems that I have had. He's also experienced some of the other issues (stereo needing reset, turn signal not blinking) that others on this site have listed. Its too bad because our last Volvo lasted 15 years with minor problems and a sticker price that was a fraction of the new ones.
In all fairness, service of both vehicles has been wonderful. The dealerships have been great. However, with a warranty about to run out, I fear the financial burden that I am about to face if these "irritations" continue.
Good luck
I read through all the comments, and have had many of the same problems: replacing bulbs (7 - a cheap fix), on my third radio (under warratny), have had problems with the windows not closing, and the sunroof. Also had noises coming out of the central air vent and panels coming loose (specifically the mud flap over the front drivers side tire.
I have always had Saabs prior to this, and if not for the body design change, would have stayed with them. The ride is better in the VOLVO, but more problematic.
Even so, I was considering a left over 2000 S70GLT SE at one point. Hopefully they resolved many of the problems by then, and if not, you have 4 years of warranty coverage to find out.
25.5 K sounds like a strong price. Sticker for the one I saw was around 34K, and they were asking 29.something (new, no miles, and only showed up at the dealer in November or so).
