HUD should be standard on all cars. It's great.

I considered it as much a safety item as a luxury feature in the GP. With the controls that are mounted on the steering wheel combined with the HUD and auto temp control, you don't have to avert your eyes from the road or your hands from the steering wheels for any reason.

I bought a 95 Civic EX coupe brand new for my wife. It was in the process of a lemon law buyback when it was totaled by a girl who ran a red light and broad sided us. I know it was a lower line car, not an accord v6 or prelude, but fit and finish were still not as good as expected.

I have found very little about the Grand Prix that I don't like, and that test drive was surely a fluke. You shouldn't let one bad experience sway you permanently, although my 93 pathfinder se was a nice vehicle too...

Karlsu99 , I have a 2000 SSEi with HUD and love it , with 12 disc changer it tells disc and track plus all info others have mentioned . My wifes 99 Grand Prix does not have it and I kick myself for not getting one with it for her.
Jwoods4 , after you get your GTP you gotta get a pulley fot it , big fun! That was a main selling piont on getting my SSEi , the ease and low cost level of increasing HP output of the L67 engine. For about $375 I put a 3.25 diameter pulley , short SC belt, Thrasher Cold Air Induction kit and a 180 deg. thermostat in Bon for about 60-65 more HP and alot more fun!

Does that trick little upgrade void the warranty? I have seen the pulley you speak of in the GP store online. $149. When I mistakenly mentioned this to my wife, (It'll be her car) she brought up that pesky warranty question to me. I could only answer with "I dunno". I normally wouldn't worry about such an easily changed part, because I could always perform a retro swap before it went in, but I have read several postings aboutpoor reliabilty on other items,i.e. interior and paint as well as tranny, and I know that some dealers actually look for aftermarket mods on unrelated items so that they can refuse the warranty fix but still get factory reimbursement for the time that would have been spent on the car. How has your GP been on reliability? Does the underdrive pulley look stock? 60-65 hp is a huge jump for such a small mod. Definately something to look at. Thanks.

    Hi All,

Well, I said I'd never buy another GM after my crappy '97 Malibu....

My Malibu which has been somewhat problematic brake-wise, just got totaled on the freeway, and surprisingly it held up pretty good.
Had a giant Toyota Tundra V8 swerve from lane 3 to lane 1 and ram me into the concrete guardrail at ~60 MPH. Surprisingly, he did not 'bounce' off me, but stayed stuck to me, and actually gave me an honest to goodness James Bond moment.
In CA, the freeways usually have 4 foot cocrete lane dividers seperating N/S-E/W traffic. If you take a look at one, you'll notice that the bottom of the divider ( Jersey wall per CHP), it is wider and tapers up about 6-8 inches before becoming truely vertical.
Well, let me just say that that is one hell of a killer design. The Toyota hit me so hard that its driver's front wheel actually broke off and was flung across the freeway. So, I guess he hit me at around maybe 50 MPH, wheel broke off, and he was left jammed into the passenger front of my car. Pushed me into the jersey wall. Above the incredible shreiking as he had his brakes locked up, I heard my drivers side wheels hit the wall, and both blow out. Also heard a really wicked grinding, crunching wail that just went on and on. After 4-5 seconds, suddenly felt me car lifting up!! I drove right up the damn wall, and actually was about vertical. The truck was still jammed into my passenger front fender, roof now, and my car was up on its passenger side wheels.

I tell you, there nothing like looking out your windshield and seeing the world sideways, with the freeway looking like a wall all along your passenger side of the windshield.

Needless to say, after about 7-8 seconds, the truck dropped off finally, and I literally drove down the side of the wall and stopped. Thankfully, besides minor whiplash, both my girlfriend and I were ok.

The funny thing is, aside from some minor pre-existing dings on the drivers side, there was a small scratch on the rear fender, and no other damage from the wall.

    Absolutely insane.

I tell you, what I wouldn't give to have been in the car behind me and to have seen this accident.

In the end, it was a 5 car pile up, and the Toyota had actually swerved to avoid an accident in front of him, and lost control after he was clipped on his passenger front.

So, why am I posting here?

Well, I just replaced the Malibu with a 2000 GT.

Now, I bought an '88 w/90K in '96 for $3300. Thought I got a good deal. Ran it into the ground, and blew the engine at 180K. Actually put a new engine in it for $2000, and sold it a few months later in Oct 98 for about $2200. I have to say, even with that pukey 2.8L it was not a bad car.

So, fast forward several years, had several memebers of family buy Grand Ams, Grand Prixs, everyone has had good luck, aside from the general rotor problems exisiting up to I think the new '97 versions.

My dad got the GM employee discount on a 99 SE, and when I visited last I thought it was just great. So, after doing a lot of research the past week or so, settled on the GP as a replacement.

Had the chance to get a nice 98 SE w/29K for $12000, but kept looking. Yesterday, found a 2000 GT, 29K. The salesman was new, and didn't quite realize or later mention to the Sales Mgr. that the car had a Blaupunkt 12 disk changer in the trunk......

So, went in, and following Edmunds excellent tutorials, made an offer of $15K.
They sort of gawked, and sputter that they were asking $17.6, and couldn't go down that low. Also, as a SafeAmerica FCU, they told me that the best they could do for a 'member' was $15.8. I stuck to my guns, and mentioned that the Pontiac dealer down the street had the same vehicle ( minus CD) 2000 GT Coupe w/29K for $15.7 sticker.

End of story, made it clear I wasn't going to dicker, and would walk.

Got it for $15k straight, +tax/doc/lic.

I guess this is about $600 below Edmunds TMV, so I'm laughing to myself thinking I got a good deal.

Anyone care to confirm, or could I have gotten it even cheaper?

I do have a few questions though. I will read the previous threads, but are there any 'problems' with this model, like rotors, etc?

From the research I did, most people seem to be pretty happy, and haven't read of any major, systemic problems with the line, but it is a GM afterall.

For comparison, you might want to take a look at the Malibu forum, and see the hassles we've had with that line.

Anyways, thanks for any advice/suggestions you might have.

Your wife's car you say , well now , you may not want to go with a three twenty five and the CAI ,those extra 60-65 poney's come on real fast out of the hole and totally over ride traction control even at half throttle from a stand still .What I would suggest is what I put on my 2000 SSEi at about 3 k miles , the first level of mod I did was a 3.50 diameter pulley (stock is 3.80) and a K&N slip in filter element (goes in the stock air box , about $45). The three fifty will run with the stock Supercharger drive belt and is not as visable a diffrence as the three twenty five is and will give you a very noticable 30 HP increase with less lag time yet remain a bit tamer then the three twenty five . You will be allright is long as Grandma dosen't have to drive it too! As for warrenty , if you blow a tranny or the engine/supercharger I wouldn't take it in with the pulley on it, but my friend at work has a 99 GTP with a three forty pulley , SLP CAI and RAT CAT back exhaust ,a very noticable level of modification, which he has had back to dealer for interior trim issues and once for front end suspension problem (under warrenty) and nothing was said about his mod's . You can swap the pulley in about 60-90 minutes and a few beers

Nope. Granny has her own vehicle. My wife doesn't mind the speed or power, heck she loves to spin tires, she was more concerned about the warranty loss and, to be honest, me using her anniversary gift to annoy the crap out of the local cruisers when we go out to eat or whatever. I find humor in pulling alonside a 17 year old in his civic with the gallon paint can exhaust tip and 50 stickers, in my "family car", and just embarassing him by about 5-6 car lengths. I say fun, she says immature. Anyway, all o your suggestions sound good. I will be printing off those pulley diameters for future reference. Man I can't wait. I know it's her gift and all, but I feel like I'm getting a new toy too!!!
  • yurakmyurakm Member Posts: 1,345
Forget about racing with the Civic.

Even with the stock SC, you will easily overrun by 5 car lenth a base Camaro or Firebird. I did it, with my Buick retiremobil.

Sure, the Camaro had a 3.8l engine, not 5.7l one.

I don't drive a Grand Prix, but I just have to tell you folks who own one -- it's a damn nice car! It looks mean and powerful, like you better "git outta da way!" You GP owners should be proud of your Pontiac. It is absolutely one of the nicest designed cars in the market. Pure American Muscle at its finest! When I'm done driving my Ford Festiva to the ground, I will probably trade it in for a brand new GTP coupe.
  • dmckeowndmckeown Member Posts: 107
Don't wait , life is to short . I do like my wife's 99 Grand Prix , but my 2000 SSEi , now that would make that Ottawa war chief Pontiac smile !
  • drobidrobi Member Posts: 6
I read a lot about you guy's doing mod's to your GTP's, however, I have a 2000 GP-GT, any suggestions on GT Mod's?, just curious, do you really get a boost in power with a K&N slip in air filter???
My GT is the best car I ever owned, however, if I had to do it over again I would go for the GTP.
  • dmckeowndmckeown Member Posts: 107
Don , I have the K&N slip in replacement air filter that I bought for my 2000 SSEi in my 93 Bonneville SLE now that I have a modified Thrasher Cold Air Induction kit in the SSEi . I notice a increase in performance mostly at WOT ,like trying to pass on the expressway at over 75 mph,car breaths a bit better. This is the 3800 series 1 with 170 HP and they don't pull like the series 2 does at higher RPM's . Considering it will last the life of the car it should pay for it's self . By the way , a lot of people probably feel the same way you do about not getting a blown GP or Bonnie , but there is always next time !

I have a choice in company cars between a 2001 Grand Prix SE, Ford Taurus SE or a Mercury Sable LS. I currently have a '98 Ford Taurus SE and have been very satisfied. Would like some pros and cons going with the Grand Prix.
  • hengheng Member Posts: 411
Also drove lots of new Tauri. If the GP has the 3.8 motor there is no comparison, the GP wins.

Other observations: The Taurus suspension isn't as nailed down as the GP. Also the GP comes with 4 wheel disks. The Taurus may not. Big difference in braking. GPs come with 15" wheels, 16" optional. Tauri come with 14" with really cheap tires. 15" optional?

Transmissions don't comapre either, GP wins here too.
  • yurakmyurakm Member Posts: 1,345
GP SE have a 3.1l engine, not the 3.8l one. In 2001 the 3.8l is not available with SE trim even as an option.

The 3.1l engine is good and reliable, but not a match for the 3.8l.

How common are transmission problems with the GTs. I am looking to buy a used '97 GT. I took it for a test drive and (w/o exageration) my '89 escort had more acceleration from a stop. I have driven other GPs and I know that there was a problem with it. Any comments/suggestions for things to check would be nice. It is the car I want, but not with the problems. Thanks.

Had to cancel order for my wife's GTP. Great paying job lost due to a computer screw-up. Ain't this computer age grand! Lack of income seems to make dealerships and loan officers balk at new car puchases. Go figure. Won't be back in here, nothing to talk about now. All you GTP owners rejoice in your excellent vehicle, and think of those less fortunate when you mash that throttle and the supercharger starts to spin...

Just a heads up on the "service engine soon" light. I have an SE 3800 1999 15200 miles. The above light has gone on three times in the last two months. Clicking down the gas cap fixed previous events except for yesterday. Light remained on, but previously it took a few restarts to cure the light after clicking down cap, so I ignored it. I was attempting a merge unto Rt95 between Me & NH, looking for the opening between the 16wheelers, just about to put the 200 ponies to work and shoot the gap when I felt the steering wheel go stiff and saw my dash light up. My engine had died at a very bad time. I muscled the GP to the shoulder, barely out of everyone's way. The car restarted, light still on but no other driveability problems. I went right to my dealer who fixed it in less than an hour. EGR valve had stuck shut back pressure had killed engine. Strange part is the total lack of other symptoms. First problem of anykind with the car. I did file a report with the Highway Safety Council. Be carefull out there.

You guys don't seem to have the multitude of suspension noises and problems that us intriguers and the impala guys are having. Does anyone know if the parts are different in the grand prix?

The intrigue does have a different intermediate shaft design and the impala has an aluminum engine cradle.

Why would the intrigue and impala be affected but not the grand prix or regal?

I know your post says you won't be back, but I hope you will at least check this board and see this message.

I am terribly sorry to hear about your job loss. I haven't been in here for a few days, and I just now read your post.

Best wishes on finding another job, and I hope it is even better than the one you lost. I'm sure there's still a GTP in your future. You have more important things to worry about now, I know.

Holler at me in Wrangler IV or email me if you feel like it.

I would like to know how your job searching is going, so don't just disappear on us.

Once again, sorry, and good luck!

hey all, i own a 2000 grand prix gt coupe and have a little problem on my hands...seems this "gold" package they put on this car has turned into an unpolished, dirty silver color..i was just wondering if GM repaints these rims under warranty or what...anyone with the same problem or anyone knowing of how GM responds to this please post. thanks

I have owned two Firebirds - an '85 and '93 - both had problems with the paint fading - specifically the hood. I'm looking for a black GP and will not be surpised if I have fading paint after 4 years.

I'm trying to buy a 2001 GP and the one dealership I've been to so far is not coming down much at all off the sticker price. Has anyone recently bought one and how did your negotiations go? Supposedly GM is down on sales, but you wouldn't know it from the salesmen. I'm in the midwest. I don't know if I should expect them to come down a couple thousand or more. I hate buying cars!!!

Hey all, 1st time here, great forum! I have a fully loaded '98 Black GT Sedan. I really don't like the way the Coupe looks but of course would have loved the extra power of the GTP! IMHO

Well anyway, I was wondering if anybody did the conversion for the K&N Cone filter & if it's a big difference than the Drop-in K&N? Is it worth the trouble to convert it to the K&N Cone? 7" or 9", the difference? Also, Does anybody know of a Reprogrammed PCM for the GT yet or near future? Any other "quick & reasonably priced" mods for GT?

Sorry about all the questions but pretty excited to stumble upon this forum.

    Thanks,
    Boozer

Gold Wheels---if they are no longer "gold" (and it's GM's gold option package) I would think you would have warranty coverage. Now, if it was something done by the dealer, then you may have an issue to take up with whoever the dealer contracts out to have this sort of thing done.

Paint problems--most of the paint used by car manufacturers in the 80s was terrible. It was developed hastily to conform to new environmental regulations. IMHO, GM paintfinishes are some of the best I've seen on any cars.

GP deals--There's absolutely no reason you can't get a good deal on any GP today. If your dealers aren't willing to deal, go to a close by city and pit the dealer's against each other to "gain you business. GM (as well as the entire auto industry) is experiencing a "slowdown". Deals can be made.

Suspension--never had any suspension noises/problems with my GTP. I don't know what the differences are between the Intrigue/Impala suspensions, but I do believe the Regal GS/GP GT-GTP do have different components.

is that GM added an Aluminum engine cradle instead of the typical steel cradle found in the GP. Aluminum is great when it comes to weight reduction and corrosion resistance; however, the serious downside of the use of Aluminum in critical structural application such as this one, is that it contracts and flexes under high temperatures causing all kinds of popping noises when turning the steering wheel, specially at low speeds. In despite of what GM says, the front end problems in these cars caused by the flexing engine cradle are serious safety issues. Unfortunately, GM doesn't know how to fix it. My gut feeling the problem with these cars go beyond re-welding the cradles, lubricating them or doing all sorts of fixes to them..I think it is a design problem. No TSB's and no recalls in the last 2 years should tell you something on the seriousness of this problem.

If GM buys back my Impala, I am seriously considering going to a GP GT or a Bonneville SE. Haven't heard too many complaints regarding suspension noises and the like.

Would like to have some serious input in regards to the reliability of the steering gear and suspension on the GP (and of course other problems relevant to this model) and also for those of you with some experience with the current Bonneville SE or SLE models. (Love supercharged engines, but too much $$$$ in gas and insurance).

FYI - GTPs are available in a 4-door format.
  • graphicguygraphicguy Member Posts: 13,665
I had two GTPs (1-'99, 1-'00). The '99 was totaled by a guy who ran a red light (I walked away without a scratch). I bought a '00 to replace it. Due to inheriting another car, I sold the '00 GTP.

Arguably, both GPs were among the best cars I ever owned (that includes a camry, Avalon, Accord and two BMWs). No squeaks, rattles, suspension problems. The only time either of them went back to the dealer was for routine maintenance.

The engine/transmission combo was great....smooth and seemless. Some have complained about the "interior plastics", but I found them to work just fine...easy to use...well placed and all lit up at night.

I know that there are some who are hesitate buying the GTP over the GT because of premium gas and mileage requirements, but the added "kick" of the supercharged engine is well worth the extra price.

I got about 19-20 MPG in town and about 28-29MPG on the highway with my GTP. Those numbers are very close to what you'll get on the GT.

Hello Grand Prix fans and owners

This is my first look at this forum but it is about to be added to my subscription list. I am picking up a 2000 Bonneville SE tonight and will want to monitor both this and the Bonneville forum from here on.

Ifty53 - sounds like we are neighbors. I live in Kittery Me and drive I-95 to Mass every day. What's your GP look like? I'll watch for you on the highway (hopefully not in the break down lane!)

Teo - good to see you here! Best wishes to you on your steering problems. Hope it's fixed soon (and correctly).

    Best to all

hey all, guess what...my GP has a problem i never really took into consideration...i have a 2DR GT, and the seat backs dont lock...i noticed it really when i had to brake extremely fast, and the passenger seat (which was empty) slid forward, almost to where the seat back flew into the dashboard...i took the car to the dealer, and after about a day of their "testing", they determined that the seat backs lock when i brake...well i drove right off the lot, applied my brakes at the light, reached my hand over to push the passenger seat, and guess what...it moved...these GM Goodwrench Service mechanics are some of the most incompetent people..they're putting my life in danger so they dont have to get of their @$$e$....anyone else have this problem with the seats locking please write in, i think im in the minority......thanks.

Great car! If you are a smooth driver, you don't need the sharper suspension and tires that come on the GTs and GTPs. Although some GTs came through with the mediocre GY LS tires. You have to be driving like a wild man (person) to say you need the the GT suspension.

Overall a smooth powerful car and relatively quiet too. But you can tell that with a test drive. A good cruiser too. Did a 1200 mile long weekend with the wife and 2 kids. The back seat is comfortable too.

As you can tell I was not too thrilled with the GY LS tires and replaced them with Michelin X-plus. Big improvement.

    Any particular questions?

I have a 2000 SSEi with the Magnasteer. My Helm manual says there are three possible settings. The factory default is the middle one. This setting can easily be changed at the dealer using a Tech II.

I have a "give me a ticket" red GP SE. Live in NH work at the Yard, which may also be in NH. Good luck with the Bonny. Replacement of defective EGR valve seems to have given GP a little more punch and improved gas mileage. Was averaging 24-25 mpg mostly hway previously.

    Paul -

Good to hear you are cruising the fast lane again! I'll watch for your red GP - you can see me in a green '00 Bonnnie SE (no spoiler) that I drove to work for the first time yesterday - I love this car!!

BTW - perhaps the Portsmouth shipyard should become its own state - perhaps called 'New Maineshire' with no taxes paid to either of the warring jurisdictions. What we need is a slew of Florida attorneys to battle it out at the Supreme Court!

Best wishes - have a great Pontiac weekend

I've had my 2001 GP GTP for about 2 months now and I ALMOST love the car. I've had many problems with it since I took delivery,(scratched interior trim, passenger door rubbing on front fender, primer showing through the paint on window trim, bad alternator, misaligned steering) and all have been fixed (It took 6 trips to the dealer) except for one. I've had a rattle in the driver side door since I took delivery and it seems nobody can find or fix it. Now last week, a scratch developed on the inside of the driver's side window. Took it to the dealer and they couldn't find anything that could have caused it. I also have many squeaks and rattles coming from the dashboard. Anybody else have similar problems? Any idea how to get the dealer to fix these noises? My 84 chevy celebrity had almost 200,000 miles on it and didn't make as much noise as this thing does.

I had an SE GP back in duh day and am considering going back to pontiac to either a Gt grand prix or an se. What is duh diff in the suspensions of these two.

I have a chev blazer now and they mean like a rock when they say it...ha.. Seriously , it has given me excellent service and still had value. But I need a change.

Got a quote of invoice minus rebate -1k.. plus 300. Is this a winner? ANd what is the delivery charge? WHy do I need one of those . The salesperson , WHo knew zero and had to 'be right back' with every question made sure to point the delivey charge out. I guess that is her commision?

felt like coming home bein in a gp again doe...

Okay I had my heart set on a black GPGT. I thought the leather interior/heated seat (I live in the cold-winter midwest w/no garage) package was out of my reach, but today it turns out there is a silver 4-door with this package within range. My other choice is a black 2-door with the cloth interior for about $1,000 less. Silver is really not my favorite color, but the leather interior is NICE. Both cars have the same features otherwise (steering wheel radio controls, wheels, cd/stereo system, etc.). One other difference - the black 2-door has a sunroof and the silver 4-door does not (that's why there's not much price difference). The sunroof doesn't matter to me either way. 2 or 4-doors doesn't matter much either, but I'm beginning to think the 4-doors actually look a little better (in black anyway). I'm really lost as to what to do. They did a search and there are no black cars similar to the silver so I'm stuck with this decision. As you probably heard they are cutting back all GM plants so I can't count on any more GPs rolling off the lines anytime soon. Does anyone have advice to help me make this decision? I'm going out of my mind!!

    Thanks.

as to your inquiry about the scratch on the driver's side window (interior side), i have that same thing happening...im beginning to think that there may be something wrong with the window regulator on this side, as i seem to recall a few others on this website mentioning a problem similar to ours...what to do though? beats me......

to 'chris6634', as for your dilemma in choosing the 4-door silver over the 2-door black...i would have to say do whatever makes the car more enjoyable for you...as for me, ive got a 2 door GT in white (no sunroof), that i chose over the 4-dr in black (which i had originally wanted black)....for the most part, i'm enjoying the car, but i always kick myself for not waiting for a 2 door black GT...in more comprehensible words, if you're going for black, get the black one, cause youre going to have to look at the car in your driveway for as many years as you own it..

How much do you like your GP GT sedan? Likes? Dislikes? problems? I know you came from a '00 Chevy MC SS and dumped it due to the ongoing and unfixable cradle problems.

I test drove a silver 4 door (2001) GP GT and really liked but I also liked the Bonneville SE a little better.

    Thanks for your comments.

Sorry to hear about your problems. I have a 00 GTP with 13,000 trouble free miles. I do have a few squeaks. A squeak just started in the dash on the left side the other day. My opinion on squeaks and rattles, if you buy a car with a performance suspension, expect the squeaks. My complaint is that the GTP should come with 17 or 18 inch wheels and 50 series tires; which would only make the squeaks and rattles worse. I would also like a 6 speed manual in the car. Hope your trips to the dealer are over.......

With 13,000+ miles, I've only had one issue that was quickly rememdied. The passenger seat back rattled; I took it to the dealer and they said it had been improperly padded and they took care of it. No squeaks, rattles or other issues. I didn't particularly care for the stereo with equalizer, so I installed a new one. That's just a personal preference, I think. It's a good car with plenty of get up and go. Even though it has the same engine as the MC SS, I think it might be a little quicker off the line. I would love to have a GTP, but needed to stay in the budget.
My mom bought a GP SE last year. She wasn't real happy with the car, not comfortable, not enough pep, etc. She struggled between the GT and the Bonnie SE. In the end, she felt she got more bang for the buck with the GT; although she thought the ride of the Bonneville was superb. The packages have changed slightly from last year to the 2001, so you don't get quite all the goodies for the $$. I think if you have a few extra $$$, then the Bonnie is a beautiful car; however, I would love the SSEi.
