Has everyone read the Edmunds' article on the Millenia S in comparison to its competition? What it didn't say is that this car is going for $25K to $26 K while the others are basically $30K or above up to $40K with little discounting.
I do agree that there is a lot of noise mostly from the tires. The noise from the compressor didn't bother me. There may be some tires that are more quiet.
Of course, the immediate solution is to crank up the stereo.
- 2001 Millenia S for 24,999.-
- 2002 Millenia P for 23,499.-
I'd go for the S...

2001 Millenia P
List: $28505
Sell: $21995
Get an S model. I've owned both. ('98P/'00S-M/E) Get the S.
2002 Mazda Millenia (I assume P?)
MSRP: $28,505
Sell: $22,988
(STK# M9505A)
95 - S - 73,000 mi. One of the first cars - we bought in 94/95, absolutely trouble free, so far. In 98 I had to take it in once for transmission vibration at a certain speed.
Strongly recommend for anybody out there planning to buy a near luxury car. I wish they would find a way to increase the rear seat knee room by atleast 1.5" for the next generation. Can't wait for Mazda - 9. Best feature I like about this car is - always in style.
For the prices, some of you are posting I wish wifee would agree to trade this baby in.
Couple of minor details to watch out on the S model is relatively high 30K & 60K mile service cost and the tires can get expensive. I always took the car to the dealer. I would still buy the car in a heart-beat, especially for the prices u'r posting - No brainer.
My millenia goes back to the bank in about three weeks (lease expires),I need a reputable body shop located in CT OR NY.Unfortunately the car was keyed and I need to get this fix on my terms not the bank's.I have the PEARL WHITE and this color is very difficult to match. So let me know if there are any good and reasonable shops out there that can match this color without charging me a mortgage to fix.
2. This car seem slow to pick up speed from stand still, I am concern it will return worse gas mileages if I use heavy foot. Any solution?
3. Car pull to right, dealer performed wheel
alignment job last week, but car still to the right but at a lesser extend. Is there any other
problem other than alignment?
9sunset, 19.5Mps is about right for Millenia S. that's how many Mpg I'm getting when I'm driving it in SoCal traffic, but my wife's getting 20.5Mpg; she doesn't use AC much.
Merry X'Mas all and have a safe holiday!. I'm taking my wife and 1 yr-old son to Downtown Disney today.
2 - I don't think it is slow, it just doesn't have oversensitive throttle. It's all about perception - I have to push on the throttle when I drive in fairly spirited fashion, so that the 1st to 2nd shift happens at 3500-4000 rpm. In my friend's Toyota Camry you TOUCH the thottle end it revs at 4000 rpm almost instantly. That's how they make this into a responsive car - very sensitive throttle. The Millenia just has different calibration. And I'd say acceleration is pretty good - today I beat new VW Passat GLS V6 off the lights (not sure if auto or manual), and he was trying real hard.
3 - when I pickued up my '01S, it pulled to the right. The dealer did 4 wheel alignment and I pumped up the underinflated tires (34psi front, 32 rear) - now it tracks PERFECTLY straight. Alignment / wheel balancing can be done very well or quite badly, and I'm sure they didn't do a good job with your car. Find yourself a better shop.
And sometimes switching front tires with each other gets rid of the pull (I did this a couple of times on my previous car, Passat GLX).
Hope this helps -
Tomek
Still don't understand why EPA published their
fuel economy at 20 city and 28 highway; my mixed
city/highway is 19.5 mpg (with A/C off). Is it possible that I had faulty spark plug(es) or even catalytic converter? Can the throttle cable be adjusted to a bit more responsive like my '87 Volvo 760 turbo?
May be air filter is dirty ( but at 5300 miles?) or air/fuel mixture need adjustment (can they be adjusted?).
Our other car, a 2002 Protege only gets 24Mpg city driving while they advertised for 25Mpg city; oh well. Anyway, you won't get much better Mpg on a car in this class anyway; some example:
Acura TL 19mpg
Lexus ES300 21mpg
Infinity I35 19mpg
Millenia S has the supercharger that rams air into the engine so you can get more power from small displacement... by burning more fuel (more air = more fuel can be combusted -> more energy extracted). So if you drive in a manner in which the supercharger engages a lot, you'll pay in fuel economy. And it is hard not to - it's a 4000lbs car, you know.
Last but not least, check your tire pressure, make sure they are not underinflated.
Good luck,
Tomek
For other Canadians, and northern Americans, I took off my stock 17 inch aluminum wheels, and put 4 snow tires on my car for the winter. I went with Michelin Arctic Alpins on 16 inch steel wheels. I used 215/55/16's (when you do the conversion from the 17 inch 50 series tires, the circumferance is almost bang on). I even found decent looking wheel covers to avoid that "cop car" look. The car drives and handles fine with these tires, although they are a bit noisy on the highway. I look forward to April, when I can get my mags back on, and give my car a fresh coat of wax. Underneath all the salt stains and grunge lies a sand mica beauty.
You should get 23-25 MPG on the highway.
How many miles do you have to drive?
BTW, 2.3 liter Mercedes C230 with supercharger is rated 20MPG city with 6sp manual...
Tomek
regard to my 12/25/01 posting.
I took my car in for an alignment check yesterday
(problem: car keep pulling to the right, actually,
I can't even drive straight with this car, wonder why?)
They said the alignment is on spec. there is no
adjustment required. So far I have 5500 miles on this car, could there be a problem with the rack
and pinion drive shaft? Or may be problem with the suspensions or struts? I had a 99 Maxima before and never had any of such problem. Even my
2001 Forester is driving dead straight.
Obviously gas mileage is still poor at around 20 mpg and the car still slow to pick up. My conclusion is that I have not test drive enough before purchasing it. My 99 Maxima is much better.
http://homepage.mac.com/zeroize/PhotoAlbum2.html
This car should be awesome with it's 250 hp rotary engine, 19 inch wheels and 4 seats!
Several side notes:
1. I am very pleased with the car overall. I get about 18-19 mpg in the city (which is low, but I expected it from a 1995 Japanese designed car, which is heavy...the 1996-2001 folks should get better mileage, because once Ford bought Mazda, it lightened the car to increase gas mileage and decrease cost).
2. My antenna broke. The motor still made a noise so i figured I just needed a new antenna. I waited about a week and when I bought a new antenna, the motor doesn't make any noise anymore. Any suggesstions? The antenna cost $25, but a motor costs several hundred.
3. I use Synthetic oil and get an oil change about every 7500-8000 miles as recommended by several mechanic friends. The car runs great on this plan, and I take it to a oil change specialist rather than our typically untrustworthy Mazda dealership (Auburn, AL).
4. I wanted to get plasma/white lights for my millenia (consider it a 100k present for the car...) but can't really find ones that are trustable to last and fit the car. Can someone point me in the direction? Possibly item numbers and where to buy? Thanks.
5. The only *major problem* my car has is some white smoke coming out from the tailpipe when I start the car. Possibly caused by a small oil leak in the supercharger...i'm not sure and most mechanics shudder at the thought of looking into a millenia. so...can anyone else offer insight?
My dealer is telling me that this is normal for cars with super chargers.
Is my dealer pulling my leg or is he telling me the truth?
As far as mileage goes, I get about 21 mpg in mixed city/hwy hard driving. It doesn't seem to matter how hard I drive it, it always comes out to about the same.
I also had an 02 non-S rental over the holidays. What a difference in the ride and interior! Much better. I still think the 95-00 model's exterior looks better.
Bob
Congratulations for your first 100k miles. My 95 S just completed 77k km (48k miles) with multiple problems including a complete auto-transmission overhaul. It it difficult to guess what type of preventive maintenance you require without seeing the total maintenance log. However,If you have driven it so far without replacing the timing chain, you should consider doing so asap.
I tried many super white beams, the ones I settled for are : Philips Vision Plus, procured from fosmo.com in UK. I installed them as replacement to the OEM bulbs on my MB E320W last winter. My MAZDA dealer replaced the MilleniaS OEM bulbs with Eurovision Xenon white which also are satisfactory.
I am taking my car for an alignment check tomorrow. Alignment was done 2 weeks ago, it's a
lot better but still pulling to the right (if you remove
your hands away from the steering it will start
pulling). But sometimes I feel I couldn't drive this car straight, wonder why? ie. I will have to struggle to keep the car straight.
Tomekk, how do you get excellent pick-up for this car, can you share with us? I will try to get them cross rotate the front tires tomorrow.
The transmission does seem to learn and adjusts shift point accordingly to your driving style. I drive pretty dynamically, so it learned to let the engine rev a little higher. I also think that it reacts not only to how far, but also how fast you depress the accelerator. When I step on it, I step on it quickly, and I am not afraid to rev it to 6000 RPM. It truly pulls best from 3500 rpm or so, where the torque peak is.
One more thing: if you don't step on it quickly, it will be reluctant do drop down to first when necessary, so you can be caught flat footed.
9sunset, experiment and try to feel the car and make the transmission do what it should. This engine does have 210bhp and 210 ft lb of torque and can really pull... I wish I could get this car with a stickshift.
Tomek
P.S. I have to admit, recently I've been really flooring it, just can't resist.
I thought Millenia S had timing belt, not chain.
I know it should be replaced at 60K miles, but it is a non-interference engine (like the old Fiats ha ha), so you can take your chanes - the worst case you'll get stranded when the belt brakes. On the other hand I remember somebody on this forum talking about the fact that Millenias sold in CA had 90K miles interval for belt changes (because of some CA warranty-related regulation or something like that).
Tomek
swap the front two tires, make sure your tire pressure is even 34psi front, 32 psi back, go to a different dealer, also try an independent tire & alignment specialist. Your dealer is giving you cattle excrement. The previous sentence self-censored, I hope words "cattle" and "excrement" are not offending anybody
My '01 S still tracks perfectly straight and has awesome pickup. The only thing I miss (except when stock in Boston traffic) is stickshift...

and also rotate back to front, and said it should be OK. But actually the car still pulling to right
but to a lesser extend. Any other reason beyond
tire pull? Strut? Spring coil? frame damage? I was surprise they did not mention that I should go to a Dunlop tire dealer to get
them check out the tires. Are these tires suppose
to be under warranty?
1. Buy new 1999 Millenia S, car pulls to the right.
2. Dealer cross rotates tires.
3. Car now drifts to the left.
4. Dealer now does alignment.
5. No improvement.
6. Dealer does maintenance and rotates all tires.
7. Car pulls to the right.
8. See 4.
9. Dealer says I ave a radial tire pull, and must go to a tire store for warranty work.
10. Go to "Big O" tire, and they order a tire.
11. Two weeks later, the tire comes in. They have a hard time finding the bad tire, and replace one to shut me up and get rid of me.
12. Car drives fine.
13. Rotate tires after 10K miles.
14. Car pulls to the right. (now really pxxxxx off)
15. Unrotate tires, and car rides fine.
16. 20K miles, replace all tires, get alignment.
17 PERFECT!
We won't even get into the gas gauge saga.
Bob
c'mon, please, since you've mentioned it - you have to tell the story...
Tomek
P.S. My service manager told me that when the reserve light goes on, there are 4 gallons left. So, I am comfortable driving, say, 40 miles more... somebody earlier on this forum indicated that the last gallon (in our 18 gallon tank) is not really usable). It is always a struggle to get the last 1 gallon in.
P.S. Be careful using masked obscenities like the one that starts with P and has a number of x-s at the end, our host, pat, pulled my message that had other name for cattle excrement (two words, starting with b and s). :-) although when you read 1999Passat review by Edmund's editor in chief, Chris Wardlaw, you have references to sucking and the part of your body you generally seat on. Strange.
PS - I am really enjoying the Millenia what a car!
It has to make some difference, in most cars without climate control obviously the AC compressor only turns on when needed to cool the car. I have heard that most cars with climate control mix hot and cold air for better control. But I do not know how much the compressor is used with outside air at less than 50 degrees F. Possibly the compressor is used at moderate ambient temperatures and it would affect mielage then but who knows?
I will post any unusual conclusions.
Great car!
Enjoy,
Bob
I am glad that you are enjoying your Millenias. I once was also under spell of this car and was maybe an hour away from buying it. The reasons I did not are:
1.power: no V6 should make less than 200 hp and regular M.M. is not even close.
2. Fuel usage: 20 MPG in city with so little power is a joke. There are cars with 50 to 80 HP more with up to 1 liter of displacement more that are getting the same numbers.
3. Parts: Dealer only = very high prices.
4. After market = minimal
5. theft - since the car has not been mechanically improved/changed since its introduction in 95 many parts are the same which creates a market for second hand parts. Items like computers and other parts are expensive new and those who can only afford older Millenias will look for alternative sources.
6. Millenia is a rater popular car with young fellows in New York where I reside. You guys know what that mean?
7. End of the line = in couple of years the car will no longer be manufactured.
8. technology that was developed in mid 90's is no longer competitive with what is available on the market.
9. MAzda 626 with exactly the same engine cost couple of grand less. If one is that vain spend the extra $$$$ and get a Lexus.
10. transmission = not the best on the market.
I guess this is my top ten when it comes to Mazda.
Another thing that sway me away from MM was my mechanic who owns his own very reputable business)who I know more than 10 years and is my father's friend way back when they were still young fellows in Poland. His response to MM was: "stay away to expensive to fix, and not as well put together as other Japanese cars." Btw he recomended Maxima.
P.S. As to Millenia being in Europe, well it is being sold but good luck seeing one. It is not a very popular automobile there. I spent several weeks in Germany, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and Finland and did not see even one. Sorry

Thanks for your great contribution here, but I am sure there must be a place to discuss your purchase, without resorting to this method of ego building.
Good luck,
