  • Nokian WR SUV and Goodyear Fortera Triple Tred are also good choices to consider. The following are our driving (dry, wet, snow, ice) and tire-wear experience. The Nokian is a decent all-season winter tire. We have used it in snow up to 6 inches u…
  • We have an '06 HH and finally got our most challenging ice condition yet. We are in Northern CA, weather has been dry so the car did not have the Nokian, only the Goodyear Fortera TripleTred, a model with Severe Service emblem. We drove through ab…
  • Our '06 Hh went from Integrity -> SilentArmor -> Triple Tred on our '06 HH. Winter tires are Nokian SUV WR. Integrity: 1. Gave the feeling of "high" riding, soft, squishy, wobbly, jiggly. Car felt disjoint from tires; weird feeling. 2. Pro…
  • Thanks for posting this experience, we will watch what happens on our 2006 HH. We switched from the Integrity to the "Fortera Silent Armor". They wore well and I calculated that they would have lasted to about 48K miles. We do a mix of on-road (65…
  • Kullenberg, Thanks for confirming it!!! How does the WR work in snow and ice? Do you feel confident with it in such conditions? Cal
  • HI, we use ('06 HH) 235 - 65R17 if that is what you are asking and the new tires have worked well. No need to shim anything. Not sure about the TPMS as the '06 model lacks TPMS . Good luck!
  • Can you please share with us the brand and model of tires on the HH? Could it be the tires rather than the car? Our '06 HH came with Goodyear Integrity, a van tire that is not so great tire for SUV. We did not like the ride, handling and road-feel…
  • We also use 235/65-17, car runs fine. the calibration choice in the set-up menu recalibrates and the NAV works fine.
  • Like Kullenberg says, we are going with Nokian. We are down in US, northern California. Friends in Redding and Mt. Shasta city use Nokian for winter driving in snowy conditions. They like them a lot so I guess we will soon find out for ourselves. …
  • We do check every week but that does not help when there is a failure in between and that's what happened this time. TPMS is a good investment. Even the cheapy standard version in our Sienna has helped us several times by providing early warning o…
  • We know the HH has no tire monitoring devices. We wish/hope that the VSC or VDIM system will detect difference in tire rotation speed and turn on the system-fault lamps if a tire has significantly low pressure than the others. Boy, were we completel…
  • Assuming your stock tire is the Goodyear Integrity, the following are some info: 1. The following link takes you to Goodyear's "rating" page so you can see how the tire comapres against others. http://www.goodyeartires.com/goodyeartireselector/r…
  • Just a reminder - CA Hwy patrol has reported that most people who have AWD or 4WD SUV do not know the limits of their vehicles when driving in snow and ice. These people are practically always the ones who get into accidents in the Sierras. They thi…
  • Thanks qqqq! The info from real-world use really helps.
  • Safest is four snow tires on all four wheels. If it must be two, they should go on the front permanent drive axle of the HH and not in the back. The HH is a FWD. If your HH has 4WDi, it will be worthwhile to have Snow treads on all four wheels. Th…
  • Thank you thank you thank you! These old eyes could not find it until your post. Now we only need to bring one pair of chains for the front! Thanks again and thanks to everyone who clarified this chain usage issue.
  • I am with you! I am a CR member, will do the same. When our GY Integrity was slashed on a road trip, we were in a tiny town that had no GY dealer. None of the tire shop had the size so we drove on to the next town to find one. Yep, CR ought to foc…
  • Sadly, use of low quality OEM tires is not technically a defect or a "problem". This is a business decision made by Toyota. We can file all the complaints we wish but there is nothing the Feds can do and Toyota is certainly not going to do anything.…
  • When driving in snow, safety trumps everything else. If it takes one size up to be safe, I would strongly suggest buying tires one size up. Besides just the normal tire "size", you can look up the technical specifications of the OEM vs something els…
  • Just a quick reminder to all of us Californian drivers. Regardless of what our car manufacturers say, regardless of what magical snow tires (even studded tires) we all have on our HH, by CA laws, all cars entering chain-control areas MUST carry ch…
  • I posted our experience with Nokian earlier this year; either here or another thread in Edmund. We have the '06 equipped with SUV WR. Nokian winter performance cannot be beat, at least when compared against Goodyear TripleTred with the "Severe Ser…
  • We have been running on 235/65-17 GY Fortera SilenetArmor since last Fall. The change in size is negligible. After a winter of driving through mud and snow, it seems to be fine. We did pay attention to clearance under the rear coil spring and the tu…
  • Hi Bob2006, Geeting snow in "sunny" San Diego today? Strange weather in Northern CA so far, 3-inches of snow around our place and our HH has gone through sleet, hale and snow today and last night, fourth time this season. More tonight, tomorrow an…
  • Hi, we have the '06 HH and because it is the "first" model, we take ours to the dealer. Whoever you use, if *NOT* a Toyota dealer, please do make sure they know how to service a Hybrid. While they do not directly deal with the HSD system, they c…
  • I got exactly this question from a neighbor. He thought the gas-electric hybrid battery pack is a bank of "normal" car batteries hidden under the hood. My wife popped the hood and he gasped, "...that little itty bitty thing runs this car....". No,…
  • Did someone report that he/she has to replace them? The hybrid batteries are covered under warranty for 100K miles. They are hidden under the car around the trunk and third bench. They are designed to run for the life of the car. There is a litt…
  • Engine braking "B" is most effective at lower speed, anywhere from 65 MPH down. 65-mph is the edge of its effectiveness, beyond 65-mph, it is not longer useful, so hit the brakes! The manual has more to say about this.
  • The whole hybrid system is warranted for 8 Years or 100K miles whichever comes first. As an earlier post suggests, no known problems with Prius' batteries yet. I know people who have kept their old Prius for 4 years and all is still well so far. A…
  • An addendum: My wife noticed this morning that there is also a highway icon in the "View Selection" thing. It seems the icon shows up when we are on the freeway and it shows a list of freeways connections and turns. This icon does not appear when …
  • Hi, you are welcome. We had same problems last year and had to find these solutions. First, a disclaimer . We never change the Guidance View when only one person is in the car because it takes the driver's eyes off the road. It is a dangerous acti…
  • Deleting Previous Destination Get into the NAV system. 1. Press MENU. You will see Set Up button. 2. Press Set Up. You will see a list of set-up choices. 3. Scroll down about 2 or 3 screens and you will see Previous Points DELETE 4. Press t…
  • YES, there is a NAV+Rear DVD package. NO, you can get NAV without DVD package. The following is a link to the Toyota Build-Your-Own page using our zip code in California: http://www.tmsbuyatoyota.com/configurator/configuratorFrame.aspx?series_id…
  • There is an on on-line VIDEO manual showing how to do this and it shows step by step how to get to the 3-button screen. Turn on your computer VOLUME because it provides spoken instruction as well. The following link takes you to Toyota site that doe…
  • After entering the destination address and pressed ENTER or REPLACE to set, a larger MAP screen appears. The bottom of that screen has a row of buttons and the "3 Routes" button is to the LEFT. Pressing that button and the "3 Route" screen appears…
  • The NAV screen does several things and some are unique to the screen. Unique: 1. MPG number. 2. Energy flow. 3. MPG and consumption over last 30 minutes. 4. Navigation w/ voice direction. Not Unique: 1. A/C controls - replaceable by knobs and b…
  • Someone posted here that he tows an Airstream (forgot model #). If that is close to 3500-lbs, it may address your concern? You can look on AirStream site for their specifications and look back through this thread to find his posts. We have now tow…
  • Hi, I notice our posts are really old, dating back to last year, so I will chime in. We bought a Toyota hitch and necessary gear for the '06 HH and had a local shop install the whole thing. It seemed simple enough to do it myself but too busy. W…
  • The 2008 Highlander Hybrid still tows only 3500-lbs. Please see the following link: http://www.toyota.com/highlander/specs.html If the link takes you to general specifications, click on the "CAPACITIES" tab and it will show the towing limits. …
  • Hi Colley, I do not have towing info but do have 2 places on Edmund that have related info - HL on Outer Bank. I found these long ago last year when I first researched the Highlander's capability off-road. When you first get to these boards, the…
  • Thank you for all the specific info, what a post!!! Do you have a 2-inch hitch? From your very detail report, it looks like towing on freeways is a breeze. That really adds to our confidence level. Thanks!
