Since no one replied to your question, I had to do the R & R on the 97 Grand Cherokee without any helpful hints. I took a quick look at the work manual at Autozone and went to work.
1) lift out fan and shroud at the same time--only two nuts at the top hold the shroud in place; the lower shroud tabs just fits into slots down below (great idea)--4 nuts hold fan assembly to pulley. (these take a little time to remove and replace)
2) Loosen idler tension bolt on power steering assembly to loosen serpentine belt and remove.
3) Loosen 3 bolts from front that hold power steering bracket to power steering pump/intake manifold and remove one bolt that holds power steering bracket to block.
4) Remove the one bolt that holds the idler that is on other side of pump and remove idler.
5) Remove the four water pump bolts, tap the pump to break seal, and remove from engine. Clean gasket off block.
6) Replace thermostat while it's easy--we got the correct one at the dealer with the little ball valve (only $1 more than wrong one from Autozone) Replace upper and lower radiator hoses and serpentine belt with new.
7) Remove rigid pipe from top of old pump and install on new pump (I used thread sealant)
8) Remove pulley studs from old pump and install on new pump.
7) Replacement of pump is the reversal of removal !!
PS: use some type of gasket cement on water pump gasket -I used 'right stuff' on this one.
If you reach behind the headlight, there is an electrical connector there. Pull it off by lifting the lock tab slightly. Remove the grill off the Jeep. From here on it's a yank job! Pull hard straight out on the bottom first and then repeat on the top. The assembly just pops off, there are no screws! Remember not to touch the bulb, the natural oils on your fingers are enough to cause it to fail. Clean with alcohol if need be.
how hard would you say this was to do? also could you give me some tips on how to remove the fan i looked at it earlier and i could not figure it out. any information would be helpful and I thank you!
also what were the signs that your water pump was going out? my jeep grand cherokee is making a loud wining noise at the front of the vehicle, when the belt is taken off and the car is run for a min. the sound is not there, i have taken off the alternator thinking it was it and replaced the idler pulley but no go the sound is still there any suggestions
My fan assembly no longer works at all and needs to be replaced. What I'm wondering is how intricate this repair is and whether it is something an owner (with intermediate auto skills) could do on their own?
Does anyone have an idea of where I could find manuals for assistance?
I replaced the halogen bulbs in my 98 Nissan Altima. Unhooked Neg. battery cable. Replaced high beam fuses in engine compartment. No matter how many times I re-connect and disconnect, high/low beam operation is reversed, and sometimes opposite for each light. Any idea for fix?
I need info about removing the coil pack cover and replacing the plugs. I have no idea what has to be removed to get to them. Also what was the original factory plug used?
All you have to do is loosen the four bolts on the coil pack and pull the coil pack straight out and the wires will release from the plugs.if you still cant do it buy ahaynes servise manual cost $17.00 tells you how to do every thing your self step by step.
Thanks for the reply. I bought a Haynes manual, but found it so lacking in info on the 04 I4 that I returned it. I ended up buying a CD on E-Bay that factory shop manual is a factory shop manual. It only cost $9 including shipping. I have to get used to using the CD as in the past I always bought the paper FSMs. I was also directed to a web site that had a "how to" with pictures.
I just sold my old car and now i have a 96 Jeep Cherokee Country. The jeep still belongs to my dad so i cant install my stereo and speakers my usual way(rip everything out and hope it goes back together). Anyways, i am having trouble taking my wood grain face plate off. I have removed all of the screws but i can not pull it off without taking the plastic case around the base of the steering wheel off. Is there any way of doing this without taking it into a shop. Also if i pop out the screens to the roof mounted speakers in the trunk will i be able to but it back on or better yet would it be possible to put my 6 1/2's in the back. any help at all would be appreciated sorry for such a long message
I am trying to replace my oil pan since the other blew a hole in the pan where the drain plug is, do I have to undo the motor mounts and raise the engine to get it out? THanx Jimmy
Just did mine and was able to loosen the 4 bolts holding the coil and just wiggle it loose and slide in enough out of the way to get to the plugs without having to disconnect and remove the coil. There was some creative socket wrenching involved, but definitely not rocket science.
My husband and I recently purchased a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee (WJ) to be our new rock crawler. I was wondering if anyone on here has had any experience in lifting the wj, outside of just the spacers? We are planning on running 35's.
I was out of town all winter last year and my battery was ruined. My boy friend tried to jump start it using a large battery charger/jump starter hooked on the the battery posts. This didn't work and I had to replace the battery. Now I get power to everything but the ignition switch. Nothing that works that is supposed to when the key is on. 4 inline fuses from the battery seem to be OK, but still no ignition. Fuse panel has power. Anyone know where else to check.
If you can use a volt meter or know someone who can, there are some fuses on the passenger fender that you need to check.
They are not your typical fuses, but if you lift the cover on the fender, you can traced the positive battery terminal wires to a silver box with seven wires coming out of it : )
This is kind of like a nerve central relay, and if any of those wires are burnt, then you will need to replace the fuses there, which happens alot with battery jumps, other electrical spikes.
Trust me, had it happen when our insurance carrier forced me to install a anti theft system.

Keep the rubber side pointed down, or at least sideways : )
I just returned from the "hell" of replacing my lenses, also on a '97. I suggest letting the dealer do it, but if you insist; the lenses are help in place by 3 snap on fittings (hard to describe but you can see them with a good shoplight. Don't worry about breaking the old ones during removal. The hell is getting the new ones back in place. Hint: I used a rubber hammer to force the snaps/probes into the new lenses. P.S. I broke one turn signal lense during the installation, and now have one of those on order. They, thankfully, I hope, are easy to replace.
I have to replace the right front turn signal lens. It looks easy-remove 1 screw located between the upper and lower lens will remove the side lens. Then remove 1 or 2 screws (facing downward) to release the old lens (it swings on a hinge?). Am I correct on the procedure?
i cant find the wiper fluid pump to get at it. have a '01 cherokee sport. took apart eveything i could get at to find it with no luck. anyone know where its at?
check the autozone website for a online manual..i've used it several times, and found it was a reasonably competent manual !..it's kinda handy to shop for your parts online, then find the info on how to put it on!..sign in/select your vehicle/select "service manuals",or something similar,...only found one car they didn't have so far,but worth a try!..also,try googling "auto service manuals" for online e-books,my nephew found one that way for his "vibe",and helped a lot when we pulled the dash pad..today's auto engineers are getting better and better about HIDING crutial bolts on stuff like that..,all part of their "get the customer out from under the hood, and into the service department" policy-but it's hard to discourage us "shade tree specialist's",with more time than money.. :shades:
I assume the cracks developed because the systems pressure release is malfunctioning? is the hidden radiator cap the only pressure release point in the system? is the cap on the reservoir designed to release presure? Please help. about 1 year ago I replaced the thermostat and flushed/replaced coolent.
Your 89 jeep has bout 20lbs pressure in cooling system if you have not replaced the resivor yet you are luckey on my old 89 i replaced it twice in 250000 miles
Anyone know what the thread is on Chrysler part 83504653? This is the fitting, probably same part number for various Jeeps, that attaches the vent hose to the front differential. They are notorious for breaking off or falling out. The vent prevents the higher pressure after warm-up from blowing out the axle seals. I want to replace the cheap plastic fitting with a brass version from a hardware store. I know it can be done, but I don't know the thread size of the fitting.
I have a 94 Jeep Cherokee with an electrical short somewhere. The engine fan and compressor will not come on yet they work when hot-wired. The OMB is giving me a code of 33 and 35. Can't afford to put it in the shop for 4 hours. We had the exact same jeep a few years ago and it had the same problem. It was found and fixed in 1 hour for 100.00. Being stupid, we never asked where the short was. Can anybody help me? We have checked all the fuses, none blown...any suggestions?

Try calling the person who did the original repair. There's at least a small chance he or she would remember what was at fault and provide you with specifics.
My 01 Jeep GC last week had about 4 ft. of water around and inside it and I am wondering if I have to change the Electrical Wiring Harness or if I have to change the fuses, ISO Relays, and cartridges? What should I do?
does anyone know if there is a sencor or wire or vacuum hoe for the booster or mastercylinder because it seems that i only have my front brakes working and all my pads are ok thanks
so i was able to remove the bolt connecting the track bar to the axle. I cut through the nut side of the bolt connecting the bar to the frame. Now the bolt seems to be rusted to the sleeve inside the bushing, and the busing is tight to the frame mount and i cannot get this bolt out. i could use some pointers. " i don't have a tourch" and i thought this was going to be an easy task but now it is taking up to much of the little spare time i have. PLEASE HELP SOMEONE!!!!!!!!!!
My 1999 JGC is running codes that tell me 3 of my cylinders have circuit malfunctions. I'm not exactly sure what that means but I need some tips on how to repair it. I would like to do it myself or atleast try before taking it to a shop. Any information about this would be extremely helpful and greatly appreciated! Please help I cant even drive it at the moment because the noises its making are HORRIBLE!!!
A few point on AC recharge on a 1996 JGC. You can have a shop do it like I did every 3-4 years or get smart and buy a kit from KRAGEN. My cost from the shops varied from 99$ to 189$. I bout the kit at Kragen and it was only 30$. You need to look at the fan clutch on your compressor and make sure it engages and spins. If not, you need prf. help. If it at least engages a little you may be able to re-charge it yourself. It may click on and off, but that is usually a safety mechanism. Buy the kit. Make sure to follow the recs. Only charge your system to about 40 PSI and make sure to use the low pressure coupler. My Jeep was clicking on and off (the fan clutch). I would simply fill it when it clicked on. As the system recharged, the clutch engaged and it stayed on full time. My car is now nice and cool. This was easy and may save you lots of money. If it does not last long, YOU HAVE A LEAK AND NEED HELP.
