I have a Protege, but I need to ask you Corolla owners, talking strictly about styling, do you actually like your car?
Do you like it how it takes turns?
I drove a 2003 Corolla this summer for a while and I LOVE the way it rides on the highway (quiet, powerful), but absolutely hate it when you have to take turns, you almost have to stop the car - compared to the PRO that likes taking turns at any speeds.

I agree. The 2003 Corolla is the ugliest car Toyota currently makes (that is, until, the 2004 Lexus RX330 is released).
As for the RX ... have you seen that interior though? Lexus deserves the interior genius crown. I personally like the outside but I can see why others may not .. but that interior......
As for target price, see Edmunds TMV in the new car section.
The Protege deserves your consideration but will have much lower resale value.
Also consider the service departments at the two dealerships involved, unless you intend to do the work yourself.

One thing I have wondered about the Protoge, is how do they get it to use so much fuel? 25/31 mpg vs 32/40. They both have 130 hp, and the Corolla is lighter, so it is a little peppier. A Chevy Impala with a 3.4 liter v-6 and an automatic tranny gets 32 mpg on the highway. Even within Mazda, the larger Mazda6 gets 25/32.
Another thing, there is no Protege that could ever hang with my Corollas.
We were wondering how much would be a good value for the car? The first year depreciation according to Edmund's is around $3500. Our feeling is that anything less than 14000(TMV of new car)-3500=$10,500 could be a good value.
I am a bit worried about buying a car in the first model year , especially with some of the problems I have been reading about(I admit I haven't gone through the entire board). But then since the car would be under warranty, it still might be a safe bet especially with the (supposedly) good resale value of Toyotas - I can sell it two/three years down the road if I am not satisfied.
Also, how reliable are program cars in the long run ?
Any comments and/or suggestions welcome.

I am still debating the price. I do not plan to keep it beyond 2-3 years - so I thought it might be real steal if I can get a good price on it.
Any idea what the $ value of the extended certified warranty is ?
Any suggestion on the price still welcome.
jbollt, the 03' CE does have a trunk light. i didnt know i had one until one night, i popped open the trunk and it's bright inside! the light is located (sort of) under your 3rd brake light. you definitely will not notice it during the day unless u look underneath. pop trunk open at night and you will see the light. when you open the trunk, it also turns on your dome light.
Few months back, it was not possible to locate any such car, because very few of them were actually manufactured. I wonder whether now there are more available. I live in North East, and was told only West coast gets any. Wonder if availability changed. Don't want to deal with aftermarket installers.
My 1996 Corolla is doing great in all this snow and ice we've had. My dad feels it handles much better than his Solara with 17 inch wheels does.

I had a 1971 AMC Gremlin.
Does that count?

I have to agree with you on one point though--I drive a Corolla to work almost every day, and they are amazing cars in winter driving.
My car (Protege) has one by the driver's left leg and another one in the engine compartment.

Good luck with your '03. They're great cars (at any price, really).

Otherwise, I think CarsDirect can't be beat pricewise.

And I got all this info in about 5 min here from Edmunds. You should try it too. BEFORE YOU GO TO THE DEALERSHIP. Nevertheless you have got a fantastic deal if your car was an automatic. If it was a manual you gave them about 1k over invoice price. Which is not bad considering that jewelry has a mark up of about %80. Which would mean that if you bought a ring that costs 1250 for your fiancée you would have paid about the same amount over invoice. Sad but true.
