That definitely appears to be a liftback, and it probably IS the new upcoming Elantra 5 dr...I bet that with its intro later this year ESC/traction will become a reality...at least as an option.
I'm really looking forward to this particular model!
Interesting that there appears to be little if any shared sheet metal between the sedan and hatch, unlike the 2001-06 Elantra. I wonder if the interior e.g. dash is any different.
Does anyone know if the door locks can be programmed on the 07 SE? My dealer said no, but I have seen a few posts, both here and in another forum, that indicates that they can.
To back up what has been said here, we had a meetup of our local Hyundai club and there was actually someone there from HMA. He said the word is that the FD will begin U.S. sales later this calendar year, and that around the HMA office it is being referred to as the "Elantra FD" although there is no official word as to the name yet.
Given the apparently-hip fugly factor, someone in management must have said, "Wow! Look at this thing! It's totally f****d up! But we can't call it the 'Hyundai F****d Up!' That won't fly! Who in the hell would buy a car called the 'F****d Up?!'"
A flunky says, "Well, why not just call it the 'FD,' boss?"
Personally I think it's a really good looking hatchback--much nicer than I expected. Unique, but not too far out there. I'll miss the fastback styling of the old Elantra hatch, but I like what Hyundai has done with the FD. And I'll bet it will hold more cargo than the old hatch.
I realize that the platform is called FD, but it will almost certainly carry a nameplate as well (just as the HD is called Elantra). I was just passing on what I heard from HMA-- that the FD hatchback is commonly called "Elantra" by HMA. Whether it retains that name or the home company decides to come out with something new remains to be seen. Still, though, it will essentially be an Elantra underneath even if it carries a different nameplate.
One of the variants (hatchback, wagon) is at least set for release at the North American market down the road soon. It will not be called i30 (Europe's new naming strategy), probably Elantra + the style of the car.
Eww i don't! How could anyone look at this car and say the old one was better? I considered an elantra hatch for the value and features at one time, but the looks totally held me back. Nice lights...[non-permissible content removed] ugly face!
Again all the people compalainig abou the way this hatch looks also find the old gt hatch attractive. GO figure
I never said the old Elantra hatch was better than the new one. What I said was that I'd miss the fastback styling of the old Elantra hatch. It's pretty rare these days, and I like how the roof sweeps down.
There's a few other things I'll miss on the old hatch compared to the new one:
* Two height adjusters on the driver's seat, with adjustable lumbar support (assuming the hatch comes with a seat like the sedan's) * Padded surfaces almost everywhere in the interior * The black bumper strips and big side moldings, to ward off dings and lend a Euro look * Traction control (unless Hyundai makes that available on the new hatch) * Being able to get a fully-loaded, every-option hatch for about $13k + T&L.
But overall I expect the new hatch to be a big improvement over the old one, based on my time spent in the sedan and the pics posted earlier.
i hate dings just as much as the next guy, but i love body colored everything. My rabbit has got the plastic ones, but you can also get the body colored ones on the four door (which i plan on replacing on mine).
Dunno if it makes a car look more 'euro'. I'm sure there is PLENTY of european cars that have them, and PLENTY that don't either. I prefer the latter.
The old elantra was pretty cheap though. But despite its little quirks now, i think the new one is huge leap forward.
I actually prefer the black rubber/plastic moldings as on the old Elantra, and base Rabbit. Painted moldings and bumpers are, well, painted. So they get dinged up over time.

I prefer painted. After having many vehicles with black mouldings and/or trim and trying to remove wax from the black areas, well, I prefer painted.
I have a '03 Toyota 4Runner and it has a gated shifter and the only thing I really don't like about it is, if you're not careful you can shift into 3rd just by bumping it so when sonebody wants to drive my car, I have to warn them about it
I am trying to find a 5-speed, Seatle Blue SE, black interior & XM satelite. The dealer is telling me they don't make them in this color scheme. I spoke with Hyundai customer care and they told me they are available. Who should I believe? Has anyone seen this color combination?
You can try "build your own" on hyundaiusa.com to see if you can build this combination. If so, then you can find another dealer, one who will make the effort to try to locate a car for you if they don't have what you want in stock.
Backy, you're right about the comparative price issue between the Elantra and Sonata. (Rebates will change in 2 days, for better or for worse.)
Last week my business (only 2 employees) bought it's second Sonata. We bought from a dealer 100 miles away because of his "deals." Elantra is/was offered at $1,000 below invoice, $1,000 rebate and $500 owner loyalty (total of $2500 below invoice). Sonata is/was offered at $1800 below invoice, $1,000 rebate, $1,000 off for financing with HMFC @ 5.9% for 60 months and $500 owner loyalty (total of $4300 below invoice). So for a bit over $1500 more cost we bought a Sonata SE compared to an Elantra Limited.
Still, about $15k for an Elantra Limited AT is a really good price for a car with its equipment--for someone who wants a smaller car with better fuel economy and more luxury (i.e. heated leather seats) than the Sonata SE. But consider that the Sonata GLS is going for about what the Elantra GLS AT is going for, after all the rebates--now THAT isn't a very tough choice, given the fuel economy is closer and the Sonata has more room and safety equipment.
Does Hyundai only sell certain interior/exterior color combinations in certain parts of the country? I'm in the midwest and don't know if east coast gets different choices for colors?
I agree the Elantra Limited AT is a heck of a deal. If the car were for my use I might very well have chosen the Elantra Limited over the Sonata SE. The new Elantra has nearly identical interior and cargo specs as my '05 Sonata. While my 2.7L engine is rated 170 HP, the Elantra weighs a few hundred pounds less and the weight to horsepower ratio is close. The new Elantra would be slightly less powerful than the 2.7L. That would still serve my needs.
I'm looking to buy an 07 Elantra Limited w/ AT. Curious if $18k OTD is reasonable to expect to pay (MSRP is around $18.5k from website). I don't currently own a Hyundai so the loyalty program doesn't help me. Tax in my area is 6.5% and doc/title fees run about $150. I don't know what invoce is but I'm figuring around 1k under MSRP. So does this seem reasonable to those of you who might have purchased recently?
there is a $1000 rebate right now, and invoice on your car is about 17500-17600 (depending on whether you want floor mats). getting a sale price of about 17600-17900 should be reasonable (WITHOUT THE REBATE), so if it is 17750 plus ttl, and minus rebate your OTD would be around the 18 you were figuring.
also i'm assuming this is without the sun & sound package?
Looking at the interior picture I noticed a few things that I hope are available when this car hits the states. First, I see that the tach red lines at 5K which tells me that it is a diesel. Second, it is a 6-speed and third it has auto climate control.
My 2007 SE (without sunroof) was about $17,300 OTD. I bought it on 12/31 from Fuccillo Hyundai in Canoga Park. I went back to Fuccillo this last weekend for my first free oil change and they were gone. I found it strange as they were a busy dealership.
wow! even better than the other pics i've seen! Looks very much like the mazda 3 five door, minus the mazda nose.
Redline does insinuate a diesel is under there. I wouldn't mind just a gasoline model though! Just make sure it gets a five speed auto and we are good!!
Was it a 5-speed manual w/ XM? The dealer says the blue/black color combination is no longer being manufactured. The only ones available now are the ones on the ground. No more shippments from Korea are planned?
Take whatever a sales rep says with a grain of salt. They are trying to get you to buy a car that they have on their lot, RIGHT NOW. The source from HMA said that blue/black was available. It is available if you "build your own" on the HMA web site. There was one at my local auto show today--Seattle Blue SE with black interior. If I were you, I'd visit/call other dealers in your area to see if you can find one who will do a regional search for you to find the color combination you want.
I quizzed a couple of factory reps at my local auto show today about the new Elantra hatch. It was clear to me they knew something but weren't supposed to tell. One finally admitted it would "probably" arrive in the U.S. this fall as a 2008 model, and then added "Look for more news about it in April at the New York Auto Show." I asked, "So the hatch will debut at the New York Auto Show?" She repeated that there would be "news" at the New York Auto Show, but the way she said it leads me to believe that it will make its appearance there. I guess we'll know soon enough.
They did have a couple of Elantras there, a Seattle Blue SE (my favorite color for the Elantra) and silver GLS (second favorite color), and a sat a couple times in the SE as well as many other cars on the floor. The Elantra puts all other small cars to shame for interior room except the Versa, which has even more rear leg room than the Elantra when I adjusted the driver's seat to fit me.
Yes, the Elantra has more interior volume than the Versa, but as I noted, the Versa tops the Elantra in rear seat legroom when I had the driver's seats in both cars adjusted to my liking.
Yes, the Versas have .9 inch more combined legroom than Elantra. The Elantra is 3.2 inches wider than Versa, so maybe inside it is wider too. That may account for some of the extra EPA volume in the Elantra.
What the specs don't account for is things like the amount of usable foot space under the front seats. For example, the Elantra felt roomier in back to me than the Sonata GLS (with manual height adjuster), because I could put my feet further under the Elantra's seat. And the Versa is also very good in that regard. So what may be .9 inches on the tape measure may feel like more than that.

I liked the old GT 5-door much better.
*sigh*
The station wagon was so much better.

FD is the proper nomen.

Ick.

I'll miss the fastback styling of the old Elantra hatch...
Me too - it was pretty cool. "Saaby" is how I described it to others: it had that slick, quick, European look.
The play on "f****d" was just for humor value.
