My 1993 S-10 Pickup with 4.3L V-6 (51K miles)emits
a cloud of blue smoke on cold start-up. Otherwise
it runs fine and does not use oil. I am leaning
towards replacing the valve stem seals which I
understand are a problem with GM engines. Has
anyone else experienced this and can suggest a
cure.

    Yup,

Sounds EXACTLY like worn valve stem seals.

You can replace the valve seals without pulling the heads, there is a tool for removing the valve springs, you'll have to pull the plugs and insert a rope into the cylinder(leave some hanging out the plug hole) and slowly use a breaker bar to bring the piston up against the valve(make sure you are on the compression stroke).I like to use a cotton rope,it is more forgiving on the valve, should someone get ofer zealous.
