Trickle Battery Chargers

Does anyone have experiences, either good or bad,
with trickle battery chargers. Sears has one which
is supposed to electronically monitor the state of
charge, and which will not overcharge the battery.
Since I have an old convertible which I don't
drive in the winter, this sounds great. Before I
buy the thing, I want to know if it will work, and,
if there are any problems with using one.

Trickle chargers are great for maintaining batteries during inactivity, however why not buy the 2/10/50amp charger instead that way you have 3 in 1 to use for specific needs. I own the Sears unit just stated and it serves to keep my motorcycle battery up once a month during the winter, it charges my deep cycle camper battery during the winter and if i need to jump start anything the 50 amp side comes in handy.

in the winter I connect a 2 AMP charger to the battery and plug it into a timer set for 1 hour. I plug this timer into another timer set three hours a day. My battery gets charged for an hour every eight days. In the summer i use the timers for lights when on vacation.

I'm just testing to see if I can get text to bold.
    This should be bold.
    This should not be bold.

By the way a very helpful book is Modern Automotive Technology by Duffy. It has an excellent chapter on battery charging.
