I plan on buying a ZX3 when it becomes available.
Letters to British car magazines & Car magazine's own long-term test are very positive. There have been a few reports of hardware problems(e.g. alarms, locks, windshields), but nothing catastrophic. Long-term owners do object to the 1.6L and 1.8L engines' lack of power, but those power plants aren't available in North America anyway.
P.S. I know about endemic car problems: I and those of my friends who own VWs are constantly complaining about locks sticking, fog light lenses breaking, and batteries cooking. Since I have experienced identical problems with my '91 Corrado and a '97 Passat, the problems seem not to be unique to a specific model: It's just (the pre-Piech) VW's way of telling you that you own Wolfsburg finest!
Besides, the problems you know are better than....
BTW, I don't like the instrument pod's location in the center of the Echo's dash. I have enough problems reading the idiot lights straight in front of me; I certainly don't want to stare off to the side....
I started a Focus mailing list at:
http://www.onelist.com/community/fordfocus
I invite all current and future Focus owners!
I hate low cars, and wasn't looking forward to giving up my tall compact truck.
Finally, Ford releases a great, affordable, TALL compact wagon. Air, Auto standard. Everything I need, nothing I don't. I was ready to go to the dealer.
Then I saw the picture of the 5-door hatchback.
GODDARNIT! It's a MUCH better looking car, and now I'm going to put off buying the wagon this year on the off-chance they'll sell the 5-door hatchback here next year.
And while it wouldn't work for my fiance, wouldn't that 5-door be great as a 5-speed?
Sigh. Add me to that list of people that want the 5-door hatchback!
What's the latest total? 7? 8?
€ UNOFFICIAL: It has been alleged that Ford has issued a 'stop sale' on the Focus due to three potential problems. Ford officially launched the
Focus in North America yesterday. A fax received by BlueOvalNews today stated that Ford dealers are waiting for parts to perform the following (3) recalls on certain Focus models. We have NOT verified this.
(1) Recall #99B21 -- Fuel Pulse Damper
(2) Recall #99B22 -- Engine Motor Mounts
(3) Recall #99E07 -- Fuel Hose Contamination
These 3 issues will be solved, and will never be seen by consumers. That's the purpose of a "stop sale". It's not a "recall", as your title would have people believe. Use judgement next time you post confidential information.
Have a 93 Escort. If the Focus is built as well as the Escort, it will be another great bargain car from Ford, IMO. If Focus adds some sport to the drive, should be a great car.
Hey carlady, we gonna see someone from Ford like we did from Subaru?

www.rallysport.net/fordfocus/cosworth2.jpg
This will(hopefully) be introduced in the U.S. in the future(11/2yrs.?) as the SVT Focus R.
I will be waiting for the Focus GT (170HP)
anyways...
I hope all the folks who have bought Focuses already get pissed and demand refunds! HA! Maybe Ford should refund their money. You would think after 5 years in Europe the least they could do was keep the bugs out of it. And don't give me any of that "first year model" stuff either. This car has been built like this (sans catalyst) for FIVE YEARS! That is ridiculous that is already has recalls. Is the Focus going to be the next Citation? 11 recalls in the 1st year? Hey it hasn't been on Fred Ricart's lot for a week yet and it already has 3?!!
Also, the Focus has only been on sale in Europe for one year, not five.
I am getting really sick of having to listen to all these anti domestic car people in all these topics. Don't you have anything better to do than try to start flame wars. Grow up and stop acting like a sixteen year old who just got a new computer for his birthday.
on the ZX3? Who at Ford is making these strange
marketing decisions?
A lot of folks seem to want the Focus to fail, so that they can say "told you so". It is not like the Escort was a flop, it was just time for a new model. Also, the Contour did not so well due to the SUV crazy market, not because of poor engineering.
Manual 5 speeds are standard in all but the wagons.
Who knows when and if the 5 door hatch will come to the USA. The ZX3 was actually added at the last minute, after Ford found out that teens do not hate hatches like Boomers.
I have researched the matter of the cruise control in regards to the ZX3.
As of this moment there are no provisions for an after market cruise
control that the dealership can install.
"Ford is process of surveying their dealers via their dealers only website at
http://www.fdealer.com about if more options should be offered on the 2000 Focus
ZX2 (sic). A Moonroof would be available in either a manually operated version at
$535 MSRP or power version at $595 MSRP. If and when they publish the
results I will advise."
Great!! Now's our chance!! The Focus is a great car, but there are many questions being directed at Ford as to why they didn't include this, or why they didn't give us the option of getting such-and-such feature optional. (I guess Ford's "Focus" is too narrow for a lot of our tastes....)
For example the 3-door ZX3 model is fantastic, yet isn't available with:
- factory cruise-control
- sunroof (power, or manual)
- power windows
- AWD (all-wheel drive)
- even engine (read: turbo, SVT, or "Focus R"!!)
- etc.
- Or how about a 5 door hatch model in the future??? (the European one looks the best of the lot...)
- The station wagon is NOT available in the US with 5-speed transmission. From reading the messageboards & newsgroups, it is obvious that A LOT OF PEOPLE WANT THIS!! (I've heard it available in Canada, but not US...strange seeing as they all come off the same production line..)
Anyhow, that's just a start. I'm sure there's many options/variations that you'd like to have available that you unfortunately can't have, due to the limited product & options packages Ford has decided to make available in N. America. Did you know that in Europe there are at least 28(yes.. TWENTY_EIGHT!) different versions of the Focus you can order? (This is including the 5-door hatch model ALSO not available over here.) Basically, you choose the package which suits YOUR needs, not what Ford tells you you have to have (ex: there is only 1 ZX3 package available in N. America, with limited add-on options).
Anyhow, I say if you want Ford to offer N. Americans these choices - TELL THEM!!!
Obviously, the topic has piqued their interest, as the above dealer survey would indicate.
Now all we need to do is to put the pressure on them - TELL THEM what we want, and if enough dealers all tell head office the same thing... who knows... it just happen!!
What have you got to lose??
My advice (and I'm going to get started as soon as I'm done posting this message):
EMAIL all the Ford dealers in your general vicinity. To find the nearest dealer:
In the US, use: http://www.dealerconnection.com
In Canada use: http://www.buyerconnectioncanada.com//default.asp?locale=en_CA
-Tell them you would be interested in buying a Ford Focus, only you are disappointed to see that "X" option isn't available. You'd like to find out it will be available in the future.... otherwise you might just have to go take another look at that nice new Honda Civic you saw the other day...
Additionally, personally visit your nearest dealer. TELL THEM what you'd like to see. Ask(tell) them to tell their regional sales manager, and to pass the word on to HQ.
I'm going to buy a ZX3 regardless. When, is another matter. I'd like to buy one the second it comes out, but it IS missing a few things I'd like to see available as factory-installed options. But by expanding the CHOICE available to consumers, the Focus will have the added advantage of attracting a wider ranger of buyers - from the budget minded college student, to the college student-who-wants-the-best, to the 30-40 year old who wants a refined, yet sporty & economical vehicle.
You know what to do... let's get on it!

Ford is probably a bit leery due to recent hatchback sales to add more equipment.
VW's are getting more pricey, so the Focus has some advantages to begin with. Market demand will bring the desired options, I bet.
To the list of missing equipment I wish to add: leather (or leatherette) seats, decent stereo system, decent tires... Could go on and on...
At times I think Ford is affraid of its own success: imagine people will consider 5 door hatchback an alternative to Excursion! You ain't gonna make 10K on Focuses!
By the way, the ZX3 does come with the upgraded stereo system standard. You don't think they are going to put a $700 bose system in sub $15k car do you? That is what the aftermarket is for. I think we have to be at least a little realistic when we are complaining about wanted options.
