In addition to the feedback here, feel free to also start up a "Volvo XC vs. Audi Allroad" discussion if you'd like. You may get more specific feedback to your question that way. Use your copy/paste so you don't have to re-write your message. Good luck with your decision. ;-)

Well on the performance catagory the Allroad is going to win, better more reliable engine, more power, superior transmission.

As far as True Off road capacity (rocks, logs and cliffs, not dirt roads) the Allroad will also come out ahead. Its got a better 4wd system and marginally better ground clearence.

As far as durability and reliability go with the Volvo. From what I have heard the Allroad is a maintence hog (not that the XC is great). I have never heard of a powered adjustable suspension that didn't require lots of expensive maintience after a few years, VW's track record does not indicate it will be any different. The Allroad has more switches and gizmos and gadgets. In the world of European electronics that just means more to break.

Safety wise I doubt there is much of a difference, both are excellent choices. Style and decor is a matter of personal taste. Gas milage sucks on both.

If money was not that much of an issue (60K vs 40K decked out) I would lease the Allroad but buy the Volvo.

Thanks for the responses, and the link, which was very helpful. Evilizard (wow, it feels strange typing that), would it make a difference in your opinion that the Audi has free scheduled maintenance for at least 2-3 years from what I understand? Do you think that would cover the items to which you refer? Thanks again.

There is a good video that does a comparison against these vehicles.

Don't do it. I lived on the Vineyard for several summers, and return there often for vacation. I have been on the beaches that allow over-sand driving, and you need 4WD to do it. AWD won't cut it, especially with no low drive. In fact, they sell an over-sand vehicle permit, and I wonder whether they would even allow you to use it with the XC. The permit is a window sticker and costs around $100. It is good for one year, and looks really cool on your car, especially when you line up several years in a row. However, you need more than just the sticker in order to not get stuck. That said, the beaches that you can access that way are awesome, and it is an incredible advantage with young children to have your car right next to you with all of your stuff in it. And, when you're done, no long hike lugging stuff back to the parking lot; you just load up right there and you're gone. I highly recommend it, just not in the XC. I have been in and seen many 4WD that have gotten stuck (not mine, of course) and required the driver to shovel out and/or lower the tire pressure. I would expect the XC to be at a considerable disadvantage.

No, scheaduled maint does little to lure me in.

While I have not looked to see exactly what scheaduled maint includes in the Audi service contract it usually means fluids, rotations and inspections, maybe adjustments. Of course if they find something wrong in the inspection it doesn't cover the repair. Audi might be different or they might include other stuff like belts, injector flusings, engine adjustments, rotors, pads, spark plugs and such. I'd do some research. If price is a concern call up your Audi and Vovlo service depts, ask what is in the "recommended" maintence for 7,15,30K miles and how much it costs. Most "free-maintence" is actually factored into a jacked up purchase price (think of it as pre-paid maintence)

For me it's an issue of frustration. I get really annoyed when something on my car doesn't work like it should, especially if it is noticable or I want to use it. I feel compelled to get it fixed and that usually means I have to take time out of my scheadule and possibly do without my beloved awesome car for a day or two. The fact that the repair was covered under warranty (you'd be amazed how many are not) is some conselation but I still had to drive across town, drop of my car and get rides elsewhere and pick it up unless your dealership has a generous loaner program, our local dealers do not.

Of course the fact that the potentially less reliable car is 50% more expensive would raise my blood pressure even more!

We purchased a 2001 V70XC in Austin, TX in September 2000. On hot days, with the AC on, the idle speed in drive with the brake on increased from 750rpm to 1000rpm and the vibration/noise was like being next to a dump truck or city bus - unbearable. The service manager acknowledged the problem and said that the vibration was from the torque converter, and that a new computer chip was needed to return the idle speed to 750rpm, and that Volvo was "working" on getting a new chip approved by the EPA. We returned the car for a full refund. We purchased a Subaru Forester instead, which idles so smoothly with the AC on that you can't tell if the engine is on or off. The Subaru is not in the same class as the Cross Country, but suits our needs, and handles great in the rain and snow.

You got a Full refund from a car dealer? Wow, write guiness, this could be a 1st and only! How did you pull that off? Where you holding the managers child as a hostage in the back seat or something?

I'm suprised you went for the forester compared to the VDC which is in the same class as the XC.

Picked up my new white XC about a month ago. Unfortunately, I just had it hand washed yesterday by my teenage son who must have used a scrubber sponge to clean off some of the dirt. Now when looking at the hood and drivers door at an angle I can see about 8 or 9 spots about a half dollar in size where the clearcoat has been removed/dulled.

Any suggestions/thoughts how much this is going to cost me to get fixed?
  • dantlodantlo Member Posts: 106
How did you do that? I called my dealer for the same problem last week but still waiting for him to call me back to have a Volvo tech person look at the car. I mentioned the exact problem as yours to him. Full refund!! I am shocked!

    Dan
  • evilizardevilizard Member Posts: 195
You can do one of two things. A good sealer + wax combo will help in the short run to minimize the appearence but those wear off.

If th clearcoat has been rubbed off in spots then getting it professionally buffed to take out the scratches is not an option. You'll need to get those parts repainted with clearcoat. I'd estimate that your looking at the $600 range for a good job, more or less depending on quality. If your consider that option do not put any synthetic waxes on those parts.

Give you local paint shop a call, they should be able to quote you something pretty close to actual over the phone.

Time was of the essence in the Austin TX Volvo dealer giving us a full refund for our vibration problem described earlier. We purchased the V70XC on Thursday, 09/07/00, experienced really hot weather that week and weekend which caused the vibration problem to surface, and took the car to the service department on the next Monday, 09/11/00. We "owned" the car for only four days before returning it to the dealer. The dealership was able to "stop" the title registration so that they could sell the car as a new car to someone else. I don't know what the dealer's response to our problem would have been if the vibration problem had not surfaced until the next Summer. At the time, I found some helpful posts on the brickboard.com site, but all of those related problem posts have been deleted - apparently someone at Volvo has access to the brickboard.com site and can remove posts discussing serious problems. Good luck with your dealer - yours is not the "only" V70XC to have the idle speed / AC / vibration problem.

    Huh?

Did you look in the archives? The brickboard archives their discussions pretty quickly.

    To superbeagle: Message #161

Clearcoat finishes are very soft and vulnerable to surface scratches. The marks you see are probably superficial and may not have ruined the clearcoat. I recommend you use Meguiars products that are found at most auto parts and discount stores. I have found the following two products to be especially helpful:

    #2 Fine Cut Cleaner
    #9 Swirl Remover

Begin with the #9, since it is less aggressive, and may remove the surface scratches. If the scratches remain after several applications, use the #2, and follow with #9 to remove the fine scratches left with the #2. Follow with a good quality wax product.

The Meguiars #9 is great for removing the hairline scratches left by car washes, etc. prior to waxing. Personally, I always wash cars by hand, since car washes are so abusive to the finish [except when compared to teenage sons]. If you need additional information, check www.meguiars.com. They will assist you by phone, and will also provide you with specific recommendations for your particular vehicle.

    I hope this helps . . . Good Luck!

WE FINALLY DECIDED TO JUMP IN AND GO FOR THE EXPENSIVE VOLVO, THEN CAME SUMMER AND WHAM THE XC TURNED INTO A DUMP TRUCK....IS THERE ANY TRUTH INTO A NEW CHIP TO BRING DOWN THE RPMs. WITH THE A/C ON.. GEEZ WE HOPE SO!
  • dantlodantlo Member Posts: 106
Cubfan, we have a 2001 V70 2.4T also has the same problem. I called the dealer where we bought from, the VCNA tech guy was supposed to look at it yesterday, but my wife and I were both busy. Have to wait till next week. Will keep you posted. Other than that the wagon is a great car, we put over 1000 miles in two weeks including driving it down from L.A to San Diego

I used to have a Honda Accord and was disappointed to find out that my XC doesn't have a real handy place to place loose change (no ash tray and the console compartment between the two front seats is too large for change. Does anyone know of an aftermarket accessory that can hold change that you can then place in the console compartment?

Quite seriously ready to pull the trigger on a XC lease...$487/month for 48 months. Money down is $1,645 total. Gross cap cost is $38,728...Buy-out is $23,865....2.2% interest rate (factory-sponsored). Any one with an opinion? Thanks.

I used to post to the Townhalls under a different name, "lateapex" but have forgotten that password, so will in the future use this screen name.

In order to figure out if it is a good lease we need to know a couple more things.

    1. What was the original MSRP (sticker)
    2. What mileage are you allowed? (12k or 15k)
    3. when you write $16xx due, does that include all fees, or is it that figure plus T.T.$ L.?

Let me know and I'll let you know.
  • dlucas9898dlucas9898 Member Posts: 2
    Hi Volvo Retailer,
Thanks in advance for your help. I need to make a desision on this by end of this week. Here's answers to your Q's: Original MSRP=$40,450; 12K miles per year; $1,645 due is all-encompassing - includes everything.
    Thanks again!

Anyone have any explanations for this? You need Quicktime to view this movie, and I believe its in Spanish 9I may be wrong). I found it at the caranddriver forum about AWD/FWD.

Basically, the XC does really badly on an offroad track when compared to a Subaru Outback Legacy. With and without something being towed.

I'm sure other things like tire condition may come into play, however I would expect these tests were conducted fairly.

Is this a case of testing where the Subaru's system would inherently (for some reason) do better?

I'll also post this on the Outback Legacy forum.

I do believe the xc tested in the video was malfunctioning.

This is a screen shot from my Finanace computer. I think the 'word wrap" is messing it up. I don't know your tax rate. The cost I used is invoice, so sounds like your getting very good deal. My question is that there is a large disparity in residuals. This is the September-October National residual program.

Do the upcoming V60R and V70R use the same AWD system in the XC?
  • drew_drew_ Member Posts: 3,382
IIRC, according to my press kit info, it is the same Haldex clutch based AWD system as in the XC. I will double check and get back to you though.

The DSTC stability control system might help since it has 4 wheel traction control, however, it will all depend on the design. If you have more questions about 4WD and AWD systems, feel free to stop by the 4WD & AWD systems explained discussion topic.

Two tests, one where the Outback did well, the other where the Subaru did well.

It appeared that both hills were similar. One may have been more damp than the other, but basically similar grades with dirt.

If the Volvo was truly limited by it's system, I would think that we would see this limitation in both tests on hills, not just one. I feel that in one test (the non English one), the DSC must have been disengaged, despite what is said.

Why else would you even put in an AWD system if the the front wheels slip and the rear stay put in such a needy circumstance?

Hi, I am just turned 15 and I am going to begin looking for a car. 2 cars that stood out were the new XC for Volvo's legendary safety and style, and the Volkswagon Passat for its European style and great ride. Has anyone test driven both? I have no idea where I will end up, but I would appreciate a little help b/c I am really new to this. If you have any suggestions, email me at camsqsh@aol.com

My 1998 Cross Country experienced a complete transmission failure in early October 2001. While the car was out of warranty with mileage of 62K, I am sure that Volvo transmissions are not designed for replacement after roughly 3 years of use. Faced with a $4,000 repair bill on a car that I spent a significant amount of money to purchase I called Volvo Customer Service to determine if this repair was a normal expense that Volvo customers should expect on their 3 year old cars. So far my 3 calls to Volvo Customer Service have not provided me with any direction. The first time I was asked to provide my VIN number to determine if any “soft-recalls” existed on my transmission. I called back with this information and left my phone number, but after 2 weeks have not received a reply. I called a third time and was told that management was in Sweden for the week, but if I brought my car to a Volvo dealership, it would be examined and considered for “cost sharing”. With my transmission already out of my car, and with every Volvo dealership in the Boston area reporting at least a 2 week wait, this was not a worthy option. My car is not a hobby car that I can be without for a month, nor would I want to take the risk of going though this wait and finding after this examination that no “cost sharing” will take place.

One would expect the manufacturer to stand by its customers faced with catastrophic repairs with expense far beyond the normal repair bill a car that it designed and built. I found Volvo Customer Service to be passive and circular in their response. I guess I was expecting more from a firm that promotes an aura of preferred customer service. It seems that I am being told to just suck up this expense and go away. About the only thing I can do at this point is place a large placard in my rear window stating “My car’s a lemon. Ask me about my $4K transmission repair bill”.

I too have an 98 V70 AW XC and wonder what lies down the road. Hopefully some of us have extended warranties that will help us minimize $ with these problems. I now have an occasional clunking or slip into low speed gear when the wagon is warmed up. Tranny fluid looks burnt and brown, with my "low" miles its' going right back to the dealer! I'll try to keep you all posted. bclarke1, what milage was your V70? how did the tranny fail? Can you be specific about tese recalls? DREJ.

The window sticker price was $40,475 dialer give it to me for $36,300 which is below invoice price
Monthly payment was $408. After I put Refundable Security deposit of $4500(means will refund to me after leas-end) I got $355 + tax = $375/month. Someone told me that it will be a problem to return the
Refundable Security deposit back. Is anyone have information about this?
And is it good deal for this car? I live in Central New Jersey

The failure happened at 64K, but I noticed strange things happening at around 61K, like prolonged hesitation in shifting, especially at higher speeds. The failure was to the underdrive clutch drum torrington bearing which in turn damaged the transaxle case, planetary gearset as well as the torque converter. I would make sure all is well before 50K, as don't expect much help from Volvo once the warranty expires

If so, the Wall Street Journal may be interested in talking with you, especially if this is the first SUV and thought maybe you'd never buy one.

Did the automaker incentives draw you to this SUV, or did the lower fuel prices register in your mind and lead you to this decision? Maybe it was the enhanced capabilities like all-wheel-drive appealing more than usual, as we all are extra focused on safety these days.... Please post here or send your input to jfallon@edmunds.com
