head gasket problems 2001 legacy/outback wagon

we have a 2001 outback legacy..purchased used earlier this year. leaking oil, mechanic said it was a head gasket issue, estimated cost of $1,600 to fix. We want to keep the car and are wondering if this seems like a reasonable cost. thanks

For both sides, yes.

Common problem in 2000-2003 models. If not too bad, you can live with it.
Otherwise, sell the car or fix it.
