    Hello Everybody,
I just bought a 2001 Honda Accord EX sedan with auto. I like the car a lot, everything except a little problem from the driver's side seat belt. It works, but whenever I move my body or pull on the seat belt, there is a SQUEAKING noise coming out of it. I don't know if anybody out there ever has this problem. And if there is a Honda mechanic out there or anybody, Do you know if the dealer can just change that snapper(or whatever that thing is called that clip on the belt). Thanks for any responses.

I have a 2000 LX without a CD player. Does anyone know if it's possible and economical to keep the Honda radio/cassette and put an after market CD player in the empty space below? Can they work together or would I have to buy Honda's CD to make the two units compatible (the radio already has a CD/Tape button)? Is that space below the radio standard size for an after market unit, or slightly smaller (as it seems) to keep people from installing non-Honda audio? Last, anyone with experience with after market audio that either did or did not screw with the electronic multiplex mentioned above?

Hello all- I'm new to this board but I'm in the market for a 2001 Accord EX. Preferably a 6 cyl. but may consider a 4 depening on price. I'm looking to purchase soon and looking for some input on a good price.

Can anyone share info on deals they received in the eastern PA, NJ region? Also, any details on leases would be appreciated. I'm looking to make a deal before the end of the month so any info as quick as possible would be great.

I like to do the "basic" pm work myself in my 1992 Accord. I recently put in bosch 4 platinum plugs, and Mobil 1 synthetic trans and regular oil. I feel this will improve the longevity...any problems with not using the exact "Honda" oils, plugs, etc.?

I apologize if someone has commentted on this one before but I don't have the time to go back and read all post.

Does anyone know how to cut off the Check Engine light on a 1997 Accord SE. Also, does it automatically come on at a certain mileage. I recently rolled over 48,000 and it just came on at 48,200. Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks
  • silvercoupesilvercoupe Member Posts: 326
bnjones, if your check engine light is on you need to take your car to a dealer or other mechanic and have it checked. Could be any number of things, but is probably related to the emissions system.
  • auburn63auburn63 Member Posts: 1,162
You should bring it in to a Honda dealer becasue your car should fall under the warranty extension. This extension provides coverage up to 150,000 miles. So being that its free....Good luck
  • canadianclcanadiancl Member Posts: 1,078
What's this about a warranty extension? And second question ( I know I'm in the wrong forum for this), do you have any inside scoop on the redesigned CR-V that's supposedly coming out this fall as a 2002 model? Thanks.
  • bnjonesbnjones Member Posts: 15
Can someone please let me know what auburn63 is referring to when he says Warranty Extension. This sounds like it could help me out. Thanks.
  • ferdmferdm Member Posts: 13
Regarding the coinholder in the current generation Accord ... it's pretty bad IMO. It's quite easy to get coins stuck in the back of it at the wrong angle and then you're screwed. My 1997 Civic that I traded for my 2001 EXV6 sedan had a better coinholder. It was a tilting-bin type with the back wall flush against the dash when fully open so you never get anything stuck in there. Plus it could hold a LOT of coins. Accord owners aren't allowed/supposed to have as many? ;-)

Other than that, I love my Accord. It's a Signet Silver which is only available in Canada. It's quite nice in that it changes to a light purplish colour at night in orange/flourescent light but is dark greyish in daylight. =)
  • silvercoupesilvercoupe Member Posts: 326
Extended warranty is to 150k miles on emissions system components. It covers the 97 model year for sure, and may cover some other years. Check with your dealer.
  • auburn63auburn63 Member Posts: 1,162
I should have been more descriptive but was short on time that night. There is a emissions warranty extension for 95V6, 96 and 97 all except Passports. There are differant stages of this extension,1 time bettween 50,000-75,000 you get a free computer inspection and 1 time bettween 75,001-150,000 you get another computer inspection plus spark plugs, cap, rotor, plug wires and oil change, all free.Plus any emission related failures bettween 36,000 and 150,000 that cause the check engine light to come on are covered under warranty also.Any questions you may have can be answered by any Honda dealer concerning this matter and by giving them your VIN they can check and see if your car is part of this extension.
  • auburn63auburn63 Member Posts: 1,162
We are usally the last to know about anything for whatever reason.I see things in magazines sometimes months before Honda admits it to us. So I guess the answer I am giving you is that I haven't a clue :)

I will try and find out...
  • ral2167ral2167 Member Posts: 791
here i thought my solara had the worst coinbox, and you're telling me the accord's is bad also??? don't tell me this....

i had to have my coinbox replaced under warranty, that's how bad it was-- you live near a toll road, you're going to use that baby, and i'd say the solara's coinbox is good for about 20000 miles...i figure i'll trade or sell the car before i'm due for another coinbox...and now i hear the accord coinbox is shabby? this is not good news.
  • snowmansnowman Member Posts: 540
Canadian government should export thinner coins into market then your Accord can carry more.
  • titopuentetitopuente Member Posts: 46
I think the Accord coinbox rules, its so simple and easy to access. There is also a coin tray under the left vents where I dump a lot of change also, mostly pennies.

where do you live in Canada?
I almost never have any use for the coinbox, there are no tollbooths in Toronto, the 407 bills you electronically or by mail over here, those b*stards charge a bit too much per km though.
  • ferdmferdm Member Posts: 13
tito, I'm in Vancouver. Downtown parking here requires lots of quarters (7 mins per quarter in some areas). I think I emptied the company vending machine once changing toonies for quarters. Either that, or there's a built-in mechanism limiting how much you can do that. =)

My 2001 only has the cointray under the left vent, below the traction control, cruise, sunroof controls. No coinbox.

My 2001 Honda Accord's owners manual states that 5W-20 motor oil should be used. My problem is that I would like to use a synthetic oil but neither Mobil nor Amsoil make a 5W-20. Is anyone aware of a 5W-20 synthetic oil? For those of you with Honda's that require 5W-20 what are you using? Thanks.

BTW, the responses I received from Amsoil and Mobil are shown below:

    ******* Amsoil ********

AMSOIL does not currently market a 5W20 Synthetic Motor Oil. It is being formulated, and we will be marketing it soon. Some manufacturer's have changed their specifications to the 5W20 engine oils in order to reduce engine resistance to the lubricant. This will result in increased performance and fuel economy. This is the goal for petroleum oils that we accomplished with our synthetic oils since 1972.

We recommend the use of our AMSOIL Series 2000 0W30 Severe Service Motor oil. This premium motor oil protects better in high temperatures than do the higher viscosity conventional and synthetic oils. Series 2000 retains excellent fluidity in extremely low temperatures, so it flows quickly and reliably to allow easy starting and immediate lubrication protection.

    *********** Mobil ***********

Mobil 1 is not available in a 5W-20 weight at this time and we do not have information on its possible future availability. We do have a
conventional Mobil Drive Clean Oil 5W-20.

Thank you for your interest in Mobil products.

I'm considering buying a 2001 Honda Accord EX sedan 4 cylinder Automatic. The local dealer, Clinton Honda in Clinton NJ, quoted me a price of $20,414 which seems reasonable for a dealership 10 minutes from my house. I'm also considering a 7 year 100,000 mile Honda Care extended warranty. The salesman told me it would be around $1,100 but I would have to deal with the finance person on it. I think I should be able to get it for somewhere between $825 and $900. Does anyone have any experience negotiating on Honda Care contracts and what is a reasonable price? I feel that if I want to pay full retail price I can do that from Honda without the dealer.
  • canadianclcanadiancl Member Posts: 1,078
My experience is that prices of Honda extended warranties are not negotiable. I've been told that Honda only pays the dealer a "service fee" for selling the warranties. You may be able to get the dealer to waive the service fee.
  • silvercoupesilvercoupe Member Posts: 326
Just wasting your money. In over 500k miles of driving Hondas I would have spent over $4000 on extended warrantys. I have only had around $500 worth of repairs that would have been covered in that time. I've had the other $3500 to spend on other things.
  • tinindianatinindiana Member Posts: 46
I too have driven quite a bit with my Honda's (about 250,000 miles) and have never had any engine work done except general maintenance. That is alot of money and in my opinion, can be put to better use elsewhere. Honda's are pretty bulletproof - drive and enjoy.

I purchased the 7 year 100k warranty for my Accord EXL two weeks ago. It has a $50 deductable. The cost was $940 and Honda is giving a special no interest for 12 months payment plan.
  • smithmdsmithmd Member Posts: 167
The only work I've had to have done on my Hondas would not have been covered by any extended warranty. Incidently, my wife recently wrecked our '98 Accord. Since we are pretty new to the area, I asked my Pastor, who has an '89 Accord, who I should take the car to for work. He looked at me and said, "I've never had to take my car to a mechanic. I just get my oil changed at the gas station on the corner."

We're considering buying a new EX-V6 sedan. Looks like more for the money over the Camry LE-V6.

Can you get the EX in the dark blue? I've seen the DX and it looks great. I really am not too excited about any of the colors that are shown for the EX.

Other companies (BMW for one) make other trim level's colors available as no-cost options. Does Honda? My wife will be thrilled if we can get the EX in dark blue!

    Thanks...SteveH
  • markz2kmarkz2k Member Posts: 112
I've seen the dealer price sheets for the HondaCare and AcuraCare warrantys. I don't have them here, but as I recall the 7/100/$0 for the V6 Accord was either $625 or $650, forgot exact amount. I'll post the actual numbers later, when I get home.
  • markz2kmarkz2k Member Posts: 112
For reasons I'll never know, the V6 Accords (I.E. most expensive) have fewer color choices, you can't get blue with a V6. Maybe the paint is thicker, and the V6 won't fit? :)
  • sansroofsansroof Member Posts: 2
Of course...thicker paint. How could I have been so blind!

    Steve
  • ral2167ral2167 Member Posts: 791
get the naples gold since you can't get the dark blue in the EX V6...better color, anyway..doesn't show the dirt... the solara comes in a dark blue-- i imagine the camry sedan does too.... honda is pretty lame in the color choices, i agree.
  • markz2kmarkz2k Member Posts: 112
When I bought my EXV6 sedan last June, part of the reason I got a sedan over the coupe was color choices. The only color the coupe came in that I liked was the naples gold. But, my previous car was a similar color, and I wanted something different. I really liked the Signet Silver, and still think it's a better color than the other choices available. I just did the Zaino treatment a couple weeks ago for the first time, and it shines really nice! Too bad they discontinued that color for '01. That color is the reason I'm not kicking myself too badly over not getting the features in the '01. That 6-disc changer and better sound insulation would be nice, but I'd be stuck with the gold again.
  • canadianclcanadiancl Member Posts: 1,078
Maybe color choices are different in Canada vs. US, but I'm fairly certain that for '01, all colors are available for all trim levels (for the Canadian market anyways).

Smithmd: When I read how you asked, of all people, your pastor for advice on, of all things, your car, I thought you were building up to the punchline -- I thought he would reply that he didn't need mechanics, just divine intervention!
No disrespect intended, for some warped reason I just saw the potential humour in your post!

As promised, here's some selected HondaCare warranty dealer prices.

Prices are for 7yrs/100K. First price is $0 deductible, second price is $50 deductible. This dealer price sheet is effective 1/1/2000, so prices may have changed slightly.

    Civic $585/525
    Accord 4-Cyl $635/575
    Accord V6 $685/625
    Odyssey $785/715
    Prelude $655/600
    CR-V $690/630

    Re:color Options
Don't know about Canada either, but you can go to www.honda.com, and choose the build your own option to see exactly what colors are available. Pick a trim, the next page will show color options for that trim.
  • titopuentetitopuente Member Posts: 46
Hey there, if someone needs and uses a coinbox, wouldn't it be a pain in the a** if he thought it sucked? Something like a coinbox for me contributes to about .001% in my decision for a car, in fact i can care less about cruise control (NEVER use it and HATE them all) and a whole bunch.

Ferdm: that's really weird, no coinholders....seems like they deleted this option. And toonies are a real pain, they're huge and I loose them ALL the time. If a coin ever drops, its always the toonie.
  • jrct9454jrct9454 Member Posts: 2,363
In the US, any dealer can sell them, and the price is certainly negotiable! Try the internet - a number of dealers are maintaining online sites that sell the Honda warranties at very small markups over dealer cost [see message 638, above]. No way you should be paying upwards of $1k for an Accord extended warranty...

The online dealer sites are also great sources for genuine Honda parts and accessories that generally beat the pants off any of the local dealers...some throw in shipping for free...

    Use you computer.
  • markz2kmarkz2k Member Posts: 112
Also you should know that a Honda dealer can sell the AcuraCare warranty as well as the HondaCare. I made a deal with the Honda dealer that I bought my car from that me and my sister (who just bought a CL-S last month) would both buy our warranties at the same time, and he'd sell them each for $50 over. Quick and easy $100 for him, and unlike the cars, there's no limited availability.

I wasn't going to buy it for mine, but at that price, I should be able to get more for the car when I sell it and make up most of the expense. It's unlikely I'll use it, but even one repair these days can cost more than the warranty does.

You have 24 months/24Kmiles to buy the warranty with no surcharge. After 24Mo/24K but before 36Mo/36K, there's a $60 surcharge.

hello---anyone with any good advice, please respond.

on 1/3, bought a brand-new, Japanese-assembled (not that that necessarily matters anymore) Accord LX auto. at a dealer in suburban Philadelphia. i previously owned two other Hondas: a '97 Civic and a '00 Accord LX 5-speed sedan, and was overall really happy with them.

day after driving it off the lot, i start hearing two distinctly separate noises in the rear of the car. the first rattle-like sound seems to be centered in the area of the right rear child seat tether anchor on the shelf near the right rear speaker. the second is a more sporadic but much louder sort of "cracking" sound somewhere in the left rear, either inside or outside the car. it almost sounds like metal against glass popping and cracking. the weirdest thing i've ever heard in a car. gets really, really loud at times

and, of course, it's especially frustrating because i've had the car back twice to the dealer to no avail. the second time i took the service tech out for drive and he sat in the back and heard the rattling sound on the right side, but, as so often happens, i couldn't reproduce the other, much louder, left side noise while on the drive.

the service tech mentioned that he had heard of a few recent Accords that had a problem with excess paint at the point where the C-pillar is constructed, and that that paint could cause a "popping" sound.

the service tech himself ended up keeping the car for a few days and drove it home, etc., to allow himself to get an idea of it.

well, the dealership says they've attempted twice to fix the problems, and each time when i picked up the vehicle, it was relatively quiet for about half a day. then, maddeningly, both noises returned.

the "cracking" sound seems somewhat exacerbated by cold: on the mornings when it dropped to 7 and 8 degrees F at my house, the noise on the way to work was almost deafening.

i guess i have to trust the dealership when they say that they honestly attempted to fix it, but the exact two same problems remain on a BRAND NEW Accord, which is inexcusable, isn't it?

the GSM at the dealership recommended i call the American Honda Customer Service Center in NJ, which i did last week. the guy i spoke to called the service manager at the dealership to get the background on the situation. he called me back and said that the dealership would be happy to give it another try to fix the problems. that's their only option to me at this point.

i've got a brand new car with 600 miles and problems that shouldn't exist in the first place and no real confidence that the dealership is going to be able to fix them.

has anyone else in a '00 or '01 Accord sedan had any similar experience? what are my options in getting this resolved? i'm sure it's frustrating for the dealership that the nature of the worst noise is that it's sporadic, and i'm sure that they really do want to fix it, but so far that hasn't happened. it's driving me nuts (and i know there are a lot bigger problems in the world, but for me $17700 is a lot of money, you know?).

    thanks for any input.

For those looking to get a great no hassel deal on a new Accord contact Michael Matthews at Roebuck Honda in Birmingham ( roebuckh@ix.netcom.com ). Tell him that Jeff from Tuscaloosa sent you.

Check out www.carbuyingtips.com for some great tips on buying your car. Get the spreadsheet for submitting an offer and follow his instructions.

I faxed this to over 25 dealers in 3 states & Roebuck Honda beat everyone hands down. They are very easy to do business with. Send them your offer & they will deal. They are very serious about servicing buyers over the internet. I never talked to anyone during the negotiating phase. We just kept shooting e-mails at each other until we came to a mutual deal. I finally called them in my car to tell them that I was on my way to pick it up.

It was the best car purchase experience that I have ever done. It was actually fun. I will never walk into a dealership again to negotiate a deal. I will always do my homework on the web & transact the deal through e-mail.

Well I can finally put my '89 Accord with over 260k miles in the paper to sell. It truly served me well & hopefully this one will as well.
  • canadianclcanadiancl Member Posts: 1,078
Just wondering if one of the rattling sounds might be the high-mounted brake light housing rattling against back glass. I know that was one of the problems on the Acura CL. I've never heard of it on an Accord, but it's just a thought.

    hi---

ral2167: i had bought the 5-speed when i was expecting to be living in Vermont while i owned the vehicle. Vermont--- small, few people, hardly ever anything that would qualify as a traffic jam, and lots of winding, enjoyable back roads-- would have been a great place for a 5-speed. then, a few weeks after buying it, got a temporary, multi-year work assignment in suburban, congested, sitting-in-traffic-all-morning Philadelphia. yeah, i know it sounds really lazy, but the constant shifting became much more hassle than pleasure. so-- since i'd been happy with the Accord, and had heard about the middle-of-the-cycle improvements for '01 (CD player standard on LX, lower levels of road and wind noise, etc.), i figured i'd stick with Accord but get an automatic this time.

took a hit, of course, on the trade-in, but i was proud to say in seven years of owning cars it was the first time i wasn't upside-down at trade-in time. (that's big progress for me!)

canadiancl: i had wondered about the high-mounted stop lamp, too, so i popped it out of its place and moved it to the side. no difference in the right rear rattle, so i don't think that's it. thanks for the suggestion, though.

anyone else, please? how about you, isellhondas? your input especially would be appreciated. how would your dealership handle this situation? brand new Accord-- noises/rattles not getting fixed?

    thanks.

can anyone tell me - has the new insulation for the 2001 accords improved the sound deadening? are they really quieter than before? i'm looking at an ex-v6 and an ex-4 manual. also - anyone out there drive an ex-4 manual? any real noticeable difference between it and the v6, besides the tranny? (i do like shifting my gears myself...) thanks!

    change oil every 4000 miles--

i don't believe that person got 16000 for his 98 trade 4 cylinder accord with 36K miles on it.... unless he/she paid higher for the new car... i mean, if he paid MSRP for a new accord, then $16000 on the trade was probably right...
  • allen2hallen2h Member Posts: 9
ral2167 that was my whole point about POST#388. That person DID NOT get $16,000 trade in. That is simply the amount that the Honda dealer TOLD him they would give him. He did not accept the offer - so only God knows if the dealer was serious about this offer.

This business of dealers saying they will pay you one amount for trade and then pull the rug out from under you just as you are about to sign on the dotted line goes on all of the time. The dealers have motivation for doing this - they want you to exhaust yourself trying to get a better offer elsewhere and thus setting you up when they pull the rug out from under you.

My tennis coach thoought he had a deal "worked out" for a Honda Insight - they agreed to give him 2,500 for his trade - but when the car finally arrived and he went to pick it up and it was all said and done his paperwork showed a trade difference of only $2,000. It is an additional $500 dealer profit - and the documentation fee on the new car for $350 brings their total "unegotiated" dealer profit to $850. That is an additional $850 for the dealer over and beyond whatever profit the dealer had negotiated for himself initially. So the Honda dealer squeezed him pretty good that time.

Dealers do not always do this only with your trade. If you do not have a trade then they can decide to simply "forfeit" your $500 deposit on your new car when it finally arrives by demanding that you pay them an additional $350 or whatever sum they want. This happenned to me with a Mazda dealer. (Post #
