Can anyone tell me if it is true that the Accord SE is made in Japan? I have heard this from a number of people (who may not know ).
  • ickes_mobileickes_mobile Member Posts: 675
I like the sedan (if this is it) MUCH more than the coupe. It still looks a little paunchy, but sharp. I also think the wheels look small, especially compared to the 17-inchers shown on the Mazda6 press photos. The height of the door sills looks surprisingly high too, given the typical Honda greenhouse with big windows and lots of view. The gooseneck trunk hinges are kind of a downer.

However, after spending several hours today driving our Accord, I'll give the new one the benefit of the doubt and wait to see if its a worthy sucessor, especially if we get a Type-R similar to that shown at TOV via Mag-X

Guys, those sport models aren't coming here. Get ready for the next 'Camry/Buick' beater.
  • diploiddiploid Member Posts: 2,286
They'll just be badged as Acuras, that's all...
  • jrct9454jrct9454 Member Posts: 2,363
Yes, it seems that most of them are Japanese-sourced. If it matters, and in my experience it shouldn't [at least with Honda and Toyota], the VIN will begin with a J.
  • bodydoublebodydouble Member Posts: 801
I think only the 4-cylinder SE's are made in Japan.
  • jrct9454jrct9454 Member Posts: 2,363
...are only offered with the 4 cyl engine.
  • bodydoublebodydouble Member Posts: 801
You guys in the States don't get the SE-V6.

Check out Temple of Vtec (www.beta.vtec.net) they have the same picture, only bigger, and a few more shots..

College Hills Honda is apparently convinced of the accuracy of the spy photos of the '03 sedan and has included a photo on their website.

Sharp, Honda. That's a good Honda. Roll over, Honda.

I like how brenda priddy and co. shamelessly slapped their badge on that Accord photo as if they were responsible for taking it. Oh well, they probably paid the owner a handsome fee.
  • ickes_mobileickes_mobile Member Posts: 675
at least credit Roy Somebody-or-other for the photo. Its kind of like Roy did some freelance work and then used Priddy for distribution...

Roy probably did get some $$$ for the pic. Makes you think you should have a digital camera in the car with you. I know I've seen development mules for the Subaru Forester and Ford Windstar here in Minneapolis before...

Does anyone have some fairly accurate info on some of the specs of the 03 Accord, like
inside/outside dimensions, V6 size compared with the 02, etc.

    Thanks......Arnie
  • diploiddiploid Member Posts: 2,286
Everything right now is all speculation.

ickes_mobile- That's interesting. If you check thecarconnection.com's Spy Photo library, very few photos have the photographer's name being credited.

    here

says hinted 03 v6 could be up to 240 hp

  • wgrwgr Member Posts: 127
Edmund's has some pictures of the 03 Accord that I have not seen before. The more I see of it, the morf I like it - especially with 240 hp.
  • crv16crv16 Member Posts: 205
Just posted on www.collegehillshonda.com site, new info about 03 Accord - says a "5 speed auto trans. available"

Maybe they are just using the base Acura TL engine/trans combo for the V6 Accords. I doubt they would use a 5 spd auto for 4 cyl. models.
  • diploiddiploid Member Posts: 2,286
wgr-I only see a pic of the coupe, and it's incorrectly labeled as the sedan. Are there any other pictures that they have?

Week of June 17th during Honda's National Press Launch
Confirmed – Available with Satellite Navigation System
6-spd manual for the V-6 Coupe. 5-spd Automatic, now available
    In showrooms this September

    What We Know (Edmunds.com)
Dimensions are expected to increase in every aspect
They've also hinted that it will get a V6 with upwards of 240 horsepower
    Available August

With these speculated dates, we might see some real pictures the month of June. This will be a good topic for us before they release some specs like horsepower and transmissions

    What I want to see
240 hp for V6 with five-speed auto (although this may just bring it to the Acura TL level) If $5,000 less than the TL wow something I can dream about getting

Accord 4 improvements in the power from the current (almost everyone thinks this will happen) I do not see a 5 speed auto for the 4, but it will be nice to have it

I have a well maintained '94 accord ex at w/ 123,500 miles. Timing belt, balancer belt, etc. replaced at 90k as per book. At about 100k, it started a "knocking" noise at start-up, especially when cold. Noise slowly reduces as operating temp. is reached but never really goes away and is worse under hard load. Tech. says he has heard this before and says it is probably piston slap and not rod bearing or wrist pin. What do you-all think?
  • alpha01alpha01 Member Posts: 4,747
Is it a true knocking sound or is it more like a sharp tap? I know my Aunt's 94 Accord had a valve tap issue, could it possibly be that? It doesnt exactly fit your symptoms though. Which type of gasoline do you use? Higher octane often fixes Spark Knock in higher mileage engines, though again, I'm not an expert and Spark knock may not be your problem.... worth a shot though. Try 93 octane.

  • mikevaughnmikevaughn Member Posts: 7
    Thanks,
The noise is a mechanical knocking sound not a pinging under load. Use mid-grade (89) gas.

Looks like somebody may have slapped the hand of College Hills Honda since the Accord photo disappeared the day after they posted it (or is it just my Macintosh browser?) First reaction to the new design is same as I had for latest Camry...Yuck. Sure hope it drives better than it looks, in the case of Camry it does. And the Camry design seems more appealing over time. Maybe this an unflattering angle but I was sure hoping Honda would break some ground with the MagX Euro design but unfortunately not. Think prices for a 4 cylinder EX will take a big hike to pay for R&D and advertising?
  • wolverine_xwolverine_x Member Posts: 54
Honda should know better than hike the price considerably or else... They will lose a lot of customers to Toyota. They maybe forgiven of jacking up the price just a little bit provided that the new accord is what the public is waiting for. Performance and looks-wise.

I may pay a higher price for the 2003 but it really has to be better than the previous generation.

I hope by this time around, cabin noise is history.

I picked up a 2003 Car Preview at Barnes and Noble today and it showed the Accord. This magazine is usually pretty accurate. It showed the Accord coupe being what we have been seeing in the pictures. The sedan on the other hand looks like a much refreshed current generation model.
  • ickes_mobileickes_mobile Member Posts: 675
sketch of the sedan was similar to one posted on TOV and Max-X earlier. The sketch is of a "freshened" JDM model of the current generation. As you can see from the spy photo of the sedan discussed above, the Car Preview mag is wrong on this one.
They did make the coupe look pretty good though didn't they? The front actually looks like the one seen on the sedan in the photos.

I apologize for this off topic post, but I thought you guys might be interested in this. I originally posted this on the Honda Civic topic, but wanted you Accord enthusiasts to read it also. Here's my post:

"I am new posting to this particular topic. I have been reading the postings with great interest, ever since I added the Civic to my list of potential alternatives for my next car. I have decided to purchase (instead of lease) my next vehicle and I am considering less expensive choices. If I decide to go to a small car, the Civic is at the top of my list.

Anyhoo, that being said, I now take more notice of Civics on the road, especially the latest version of the model (I really like this one best). I noticed one in the mall parking lot last night and something about it stood out, I think it was the rims that caught my eye. So I drove past it and it had Acura rims. I thought that was odd, but not unbelievable until I noticed that it had Acura badging as well. A closer look showed the name as "Acura EL". I was floored!! I had never heard of this vehicle, not a word of a Civic-based entry level Acura.

I do know that the TL is based on the Accord, but they do look different. They are somewhat similar but you can tell them apart, even from a distance. However, this "EL" looked identical to a Civic. The only apparent difference I could see (it was getting dark) were the rims, the badging and the nameplate.

I'm not sure why someone would rather pay more for an Acura that looks exactly like the Honda Civic, except for extra goodies not available on the Civic and the Acura ownership experience. Still, I would think that Acura would have done more to differentiate the look of the "EL" from the Civic, which is more of a compact economy car. Acura generally indicates more of a luxury experience, not economy. I also wonder what the difference in price is. I wish I had had a camera with me so I could have taken a picture of it. It almost looked like some sort of hoax.

Has anyone heard of an Acura EL? Is it new for 2003? I had to share this with the forum, I was really surprised to see this."

Any thoughts or ideas on this? I haven't seen anything on Edmunds (even the future predictions) about an Acura EL. Maybe someone was merely being clever with his new Civic.
  • ateksieateksie Member Posts: 1
The EL, I believe, has been sold in Cananda only..
  • subzero206subzero206 Member Posts: 111
my neighbor has one he bought in canada and brought it back here.
  • diploiddiploid Member Posts: 2,286
The Acura EL is basically Canada's version of a Civic EX, but it can be had with leather. Amazing how minor exterior differences can make the Acura EL look so much better than the Civic.
Otherwise, it's the same car as a Civic.

Unless they put the RSX's engine into it, I don't think it would sell in the U.S.
  • silvercrownsilvercrown Member Posts: 237
though it makes sense with Michigan being a stone's throw from the Canadian border. I didn't notice the plates on it, didn't even think to look. But I think that it probably had Michigan plates. We're so close to Canada that the owner could have easily bought the car there and brought it back to Michigan.

Diploid's explanation and rationale makes perfect sense. Thanks for the responses. The mystery is solved and I can stop scratching my head about it ...... LOL

I'm just as disappointed as you are with those "Brenda Priddy" spy photos. With VW stealing the mid market sedan show, I saw the German MagX/Motor Trend design as THE way for Honda to go for their new design. To me, the spy photos show a sedan that looks little more than a fifth generation retread, and it's particularly frustrating given their decision to wait five years for a redo.

I'm sure that College Hills Honda's pulled the photo because Honda doesn't want the design broadcasted, but I'm going to hold out the hope that it was pulled because it wasn't accurate.
  • bodydoublebodydouble Member Posts: 801
Actually the EL does have a few significant upgrades from the Civic: the engine is the 127hp engine from the Si, front side airbags, 4-wheel discs, leather interior, better stereo.
  • venus537venus537 Member Posts: 1,443
the Si has a 160 hp 2.0l engine, the EX has the 127 hp engine. Thus, the EX and EL have the same engine.

heisnstein: I like the design and hope it's the real thing. bueaty is in the eye of the beholder.

Has anyone seen the 'spy pictures'on the DETNEWS site, under Autos? The short article mentions that the car was being tested down in Mississippi.
  • kw_carmankw_carman Member Posts: 114
Was looking at a sneak photo here at Edmunds of the back of a 03 Accord coupe. The rear looks like a Volvo S40/V40. Please, let this not be true. That style is perfect for a Volvo, but Honda?
  • kw_carmankw_carman Member Posts: 114
It also reminds me of the back of an Audi A6.

I have seen that College Hills Honda has confirmed that a 5-speed Automatic tranny will be available in the new Accord. Has anyone heard if it will be the same as the TL - i.e. with the Sequential Sport Shift? I certainly hope so, given the fact that Honda refuses to put out a 5-speed manual in the V-6s.
  • joeandcarol2joeandcarol2 Member Posts: 152
The new 6 speed manual used in the 03 CL-S will be available for the Accord Coupe with V-6

does anyone know which aftermarket cd changers will fit into my 98 accord LX sedan? Neither my dealer nor the folks at the Honda customer service 800# know the answer...thanks!
  • brisaccordbrisaccord Member Posts: 4
I've recently purchased a 98 accord LX sedan. Just as the engine "catches" when the key is turned to start the car, I hear a "thud"-like sound. It's a very quick "thud", took me a week of owning the car to notice it, but now I hear it every time I start the car. I'm thinking motor mount as it sounds similar to the sound my 69 Impala made when IT needed a motor mount (many moons ago...), but it's a pure guess. The car came certified for a year and I'd like to try to get whatever it is making the sound fixed under warranty if possible; however I need to figure out what's causing the "thud" first and I'm at a loss...thanks for the help!

The Town Hall is about to take on a new look in an effort to make content more easily searchable and accessible.

Have you seen the Letter from the Town Hall Manager on the Town Hall Welcome page? If not, you might want to follow that link to have a look.

And hang on to your seats. Change is never easy - for any of us - but resolving the Search problems we've had will be worth the pain.

If the 4 banger, their bread and butter, goes up to 170hp, and is mated to an automatic 5 speed, the new Accord will be hot!

My only complaint with my 02 Accord EX 4cyl is that it downshifts too often when going uphill and fully loaded (the car, not the driver...). Furthermore, the 3rd gear is too short, and therefore the engine revs quite a bit. Now, if there was an intermediate gear between the current 3rd and 4th, it'd be perfect for passing/going uphill with the 4 cyl.

I like everything else the way it is, so as long as they don't screw it up with the new one, that'd be fine by me.
