I checked out the photos of your dent. My dent was definitely from something that left a slight black rubber/plastic residue, and was too close to the mirror to have been another car's door, plus I park away from others just to avoid such a risk. Since I have been paranoid about getting door dings, I'm always checking the car out just about everytime I get into it, especially after shopping. Earlier that morning I had been to Walmart and Trak Auto with no dent, but stopped by Safeway for some groceries, and that's went I received the shock.
Your dent looks exactly like the dent my father's 1999 Toyota Corolla had after coming out of the paint shop for having the roof re-painted under warranty. The guys at the shop didn't know what to make of it, and like I said, it looks exactly like your dent, in the same place, with no obvious cause.
Especially, when I see a Camry or a Accord next to me, on the highway. I push my Sonata all the way to show it off. I keep telling myself to stop, but I can not stop racing my car...........
Safe motoring at least you guys, and I will update about my Sonata soon.
Anyway, I'm hoping that I can get some quick advice. I got a Bulldog remote starter/key less entry/trunk release kit for Xmas. I opened it and tried to read the manual and my head started spinning. I called my dealership service department and they said that they would not put it in. They recommended a car stereo or alarm place, but so far, the ones that I've called will only put in a system that they sell. My questions are:
1. Just how hard are these things to install (there is a video that I haven't watched yet)?
2. If it's too difficult for the average dummy like myself, who will put it in? What will it cost?
And perhaps most importantly:
3. Will putting something like this in, either by myself or through a professional, have any adverse effect on the warranty? I'd love to have this system in, but the car is less than a year old and I don't want to void the warranty.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance and happy motoring.
I have a 2000 Sonata GLS option 10. I have 20000 flawless miles on it without even a squeak. I had a keyless entry system purchased and installed by Circuit City. It cost $145.00, well worth it, the transmitter work almost 100 feet away. The front and rear parking lights blink when you click lock or unlock. I also install a 2001 chrome grill. I purchased the grill from Focus Hyundai in Canada, total coat $115.00 US dollars
Thanks
I believe the problem was with the fuel (water content) with ice crystals in the lines but just in case I am going to start carrying a container of dry gas. I won't use it unless I get a repeat episode once I've re-filled from another station.
2.)My keyless transmitter went on the fritz again and refuses to pulse properly. It looks like I will have to get a replacement from Hyundai as it is their keyless/alarm system.
These two minor gripes aside, my wife and I have enjoyed our Silver GLS no end for nearly 10,000 miles.. I would not think twice about repeating this purchase. (Although, the XG300 does look rather tempting.)
3.)Also, for those who are interested, the T-H-C is up and running again. Who knows for how long?
I have a 2000 Sonata GAS loaded, and I am wondering if anyone else has had similar problems with rattles. I have this annoying rattle in the driver's side door that seemed to be something vibrating against the window, and only stops with the window cracked. I have taken it to my dealer two times already, and the only thing they have done is keep it, take it apart, and return it with the same problem. I am about to make them replace the whole door. I have been a Hyundai owner for three cars, and finally I have decided to push the ante and make them responsible for every little thing that goes wrong with the car. I wasn't happy with my other two cars coupes, but lived with the problems as the history of the manufacture has been not too good. I am very happy with this machine, and if my only faults are the rattles I will be a very happy camper. I have heard rumors about a batch of bad shocks that were installed in this line of car, but cannot find the articles relating to them, but I thought it was someone who test drove the car, and had them replaced at the dealer, they admitted they were bad... Anyone with info on that I would appreciate it. I would swear after only 7000 miles, the ride (seems) not as nice as day one. But the roads I travel in LA are lousy.
Couple of other items: Has anyone installed the after market strut bars? And also has anyone installed the automatic climate control that is available after market? I would be interested in your comments.
Thanks Brian
Thanks for the "door ding prevention" topic referral, it makes me feel a little better about dings in the future.
My car stutters occasionally, but I'm assuming it's related to the recall, since I haven't gotten it fixed yet, haven't gotten the official notice.
BTW, after visiting two Walmarts, I was finally able to find the Headlights-On chime kit someone recommended earlier. It is just $7, and looks like it'll only take about 5 minutes to install, since it clips into the fuse box. For those having a hard time finding it, the packaging is 3M brand, yellow/red card-backing and the device is a real tiny little bugger. I'm surprised that dealerships don't throw this in for free as good customer service, since it'd be even cheaper getting them wholesale.
Service confirmed it was a bad window regulator.
I'm waiting till they get the part.
Print #504 and this article out, and show it to service. It might help.
I used the small gold connectors with the pointed ends. They are the only ones that fit the Sonata fuse box without serious modification. Also, the buzzer, while small, does not allow the fuse box cover to snap back in place if you place it on the inside of the cover. I am temporarily using duck tape to keep things secure until the weather warms a little and I can do a little modifying. I tell you, if you mount this thing outside the fuse box it will be even louder, if that's possible. Don't follow the directions on the package and use the dash lighting fuse. It doesn't work. Stick to the (black-RR FOG) (red-RH or LH TAIL) configuration...works like a charm.
BTW, my starting stutter episode has now repeated itself so I am going to the STP Water Treatment. It only occurs in the early morning start-up, when temps have been at their lowest.
I still am assuming the last fuel fill-up to be the culprit. I'll be re-filling from another location in a day or two so I'll be looking for things to return to normal.
Incidently, 27,000 miles seem a tad high for a 1-1/2 year old car. Still, any use car can be a good buy if you understand exactly what you're buying into and pay appropriately.
Volfy---thanks for the tip. Neither my wife or I have experienced any performance issues other than the two recent stutter start episodes. Thus far I have not treated the fuel injection system with any additives except for the STP Water treatment and that has cleared up the problem. I am going to re-fill tonight at a Mobil station I trust. Usually I go with my neighborhood Amoco but this was the source of my last fill---so I don't know. I may have to scratch this station off of the list.
I have been searching for a 2001 Sonata GLS manual for two months. The local dealer has plenty of autos, but I want a manual transmission.
I used one of the on-line services to find it and they
couldn't. The on-line service told me that the dealers they contacted said that Hyundai does not
make V6 manuals. Does anyone know if this is true?
Carless in central New York.
I bought my GLS w/Pkg 13 in May '00. Talk about hard to get. Mine is the rare V-6 5-speed. Mine is the only one I've seen. Omaha area dealer did order a couple '00 automatic GLS w/Pkg 13. My wife wanted a Moss Green one but I have to have manual.
Kia Optima is offering ABS as a stand-alone option. Too bad the loaded V-6 only comes automatic. Had a chance to compare Optima to Sonata at Omaha Auto Show tonight. Optima came across quite favorably. Nicer leather, better trunk lid hinges, and some nicer interior features. But it is more expensive. But I prefer the less tradional styling of the Sonata to the more conservative Optima, esp. in rear end.
I had to do a 10-State dealer locate in May '00. Found only 1 in the area. Omaha area dealer had to do an inter-dealer trade with an Illinois dealer. It is an early build '00 which sat on the Illinois dealer's lot for about 8 months. Is only one I've seen. My dealership was intrigued when it arrived. The dealer had never ordered a '99 or '00 Sonata V-6 manual. The service tech always comments favorably on it whenever I go in for LOF, rotate, etc. He's told me he has worked on only one other one and that from a person who moved into the Omaha area with it.
Don't expect the creamy smoothest shifter. Clutch is light and engages nicely but the shifter is a bit notchy. I've put over 12,000 miles on mine. She has improved a bit over time. But she can be real notchy in very cold weather until she warms up. I get about 28 mpg on interstate doing 74 mph. She turns over about 250-300 rpms faster than automatic due to gearing. Both 4th and 5th are overdrive, so if you want to pass quickly you sometimes downshift into 3rd.

Those are rendering of face-lifted 2002 Sonata...
Excited new 2000 black base 4cyl. Sonata owner. 150 miles driven in northeast snow and cold. Love the ride, performance .
Wondering if someone here could advice, best exterior paint finish wax or protectant ? (Only wish first 2 days of driving in snow and ice, Base model Sonata was equipped with heated outside rear view mirrors :I)
It is extremely frustrating to go through all the form-filling over and over again only to meet with continuing lack of success. I know there must be someone out there who has utilized this site successfully. I've just about given up.
If you truly have connected everything as stated and still no result, I suggest you return the item for a replacement. With Wal-Mart that is never a problem. Good Luck.
Why buy a Corrola when you can get a Camry +++ for less money.
We are looking for a 4Cyl. with 4-Speed Aoto Trans in White Pearl
with Option Package 2 [6Speaker AM/FM/CD and Moonroof] plus
Keyless Remote Entry. Mud Guards, Sunroof Wind Deflector and
Carpeted Floor Mats .
Also I noticed that the 2001 Elantra has a baffle on top of the engine
to soften engine noise. Any plans for adding this to 4 Cyl Sonata engines?
I am learning lots of good stuff about Hyndai here thanks to all . Hope to add
more hands on comments after we get our new baby
I ordered some touch-up paint using the Hyundai Online system, but next time I'll specify a different dealership to fulfill the order, since the one I used took a week just to confirm my order.
I test drove the 2001 Elantra a few weeks ago, and even though I liked it overall, the price is getting too close to a Toyota Corolla, which has better resale value. The early 2001 Elantras already have a recall for their airbags.
With my voltmeter I found that on my 99 sonata that both fuses are positive. For the buzzer to work it has to have a ground somewhere. Is my sonata different in some way. It was one of the first made in 1999.
Have you tried the touch test on all of the fuse backs? I know this worked for me before removing any fuses...saved a lot of time and back sprain.
The only other thing I can suggest is to try the chime (3 wire-more expensive) or the buzzer from Radio Shack. I know some have had success but I could not figure out the chime wiring. The third wire is an intermittent which acts as an on-off. I couldn't decide which line to connect to for the third wire.
Hyundai will sell this car in Korea from tomorrow.
Hyundai will lanuch this car in Europe in April and in North America in July.
It looks much better than old one......

The price will be same as old one or a little bit higher than old one like 2001 Elantra...

New Sonata has a 4-speed shiftronic Automatic transmission.....
Engine variation is as same as 2001 one..
But the car is great and to those poor mixed up fools that would choose a Daewoo over this car I would say, get your head examined!
FYI Huntinton Hyundai on Long Island is the place to buy if you're from the tri-state area. If you go in there knowing what you want they won't play games. Name your price and they do try. Worked for me.
The tail end, however, is a different story. Not only is it a complete departure from the current Sonata, the generic swooping curves and tail lamp treatment would certainly allow the '02 Sonata to blend right into the crowd of nondescriptive Buicks and Tauruses. If conformity was the goal here, Hyundai has hit the mark dead on.
Overall, the '02 Sonata looks to be a well-executed re-skin job, as the rest of the car appear to be identical to the old. IMO, Hyundai did a slightly better cosmetic job with the Sonata than it did with the Elantra, and certainly much better than the '00 Tiburon.
I sure hope they swapped the Trunk lid C-arms for damper struts. :-)
"Hyundai had another record year, with total 2000 sales of 244,391, a whopping 49 percent increase over 1999... brand continues to win sales through its warranty... 'it removed one of the most significant barriers to buying their product'... Hyundai spokesperson said if the company sells its full-year target of 60,000 Santa Fes next year plus 12,000 XGs, its sales will be over 300,000, a first for a Korean brand and respectable sales numbers for any import."
I looked under the front end, and there was not even any sign of the scrape. I can't believe the air bag would go off that easily. Should this be covered under warranty? Is there any setting for the sensitivity on these things.
Since I liked the Sonata so much, last month I got a 2001 El antra for my daughter. It scares me to think of what would happen if this happened to her, especially if she was moving at any speed.
Has this happened to anyone else?
I'm certain you were the victim of a freak set of circumstances. The bottom scrape location combined with too high a sensitivity was most likely responsible. I would not be concerned about such incidents when driving normally. While there may be some on record, I have never yet heard of an airbag just going off when at speed. You generally hear of the low speed incidents such as yours.
Back in September my '00 GLS w/Pkg 13 had a front end collision. I was going about 25-30 mph when a truck travelling in same direction to lane to my immediate left, driving about same speed, changed lanes to the right. He didn't see me before changing. I braked hard (engaging ABS), drifted right as close to curb as I could, but the very rear of his truck clipped the front driver side of my car, right about the headlight. Took only about a couple seconds, if that, of impact forces. Popped the headlight out and then mashed front up a bit when he pushed me into the curb.
Fortunately for me and my insurance company, none of my airbags deployed, nor did the seatbelt pretensioners. Mostly lateral forces at the very front of the car. Computer controllers, sensitivity settings, and software all worked like they should've for me.
The wreck on the driver side just under the gas cap of the Sonata that happened two months ago has been repaired. One body shop wanted to install a new quarter panel and rear bumper cover. I opted for them just to repair the originals, which they did. Total job cost was US$850.00.
We have just had the second oil change done at 6800 miles. Aside from the recall that's about all we've had it in for.
Warning: My wife bought a seat belt strap cushion that wraps around the belt and rests on your shoulder. Wal-Mart sells it and it looks like sheep's wool. Anyway, it will cause the strap not to retract, which then got caught in the door and tore up the weather-stripping. Just FYI.
The Sonata has developed a buzz at 1900 rpm during the cold temps. It goes away after five mins. of driving but it bothers my wife. Could be the catylitic's heat sheald or exhaust manifold's heat sheald, its not too much of an issue.
I bought the 3M buzzer. Tried to install it but cant even push it in the slot.
Question to Astrol Do I put the gold colored thingamajigger in the fuse box before the fuse or together with the fuse?I hope you know what I'm trying to ask.
My wife wants the neon lights under the car. Fat chance.
Now Hyundai install same A/T & M/T to 1.8,2.0,2.4 and V6 2.5 models.
Upgrading Engine means that Hyundai should install another Transmission because of transmission's capacity.
New Tiburon will have v6 2.7 and will be launched this summer. If this model going to go mass production, I think Hyundai will put bigger engine and transmission.
However, for the customer who need more power, Hyundai has XG 300, that could be good choice.
Have a safe driving!!!
Yes, do insert the small blade connectors into the fuse slot first. Before you do, however, you will want to crimp the small triangular catch flat against the blade and even slightly rebend the piece to give you a little more room. It is a tight fit under any circumstances but it does go in virtually all the way. As I previously posted, I am using duck tape to keep the fuse box cover in place until the weather warms and I can spend some time reworking it. I intend to keep the buzzer unit inside the cover. Again, you will be surprised at how loud this buzzer is. Your wife will never leave the lights on again---if she ever did.
So it's to be a truck, huh? And you have to have the size and power of a 250? Whatcha gonna be haulin'? Surely you could fit whatever you needed into an XG's trunk? Wouldn't that make for a nice compromise?
However, it's a huge file.
In 2002 Sonata, EBD-ABS is basic. Every Sonata will get ABS.
Price is a little bit higher..
It's from US $400 to US $700 higher than what it is.

I know this sounds trivial, but I just want to avoid getting nicks all over the car and regretting it.
