DO NOT MELT AWAY! I don't understand why you must leave. What gives?

    Hello , hello , , , hello , , , , hello

Getting lonely up here Dan !

best of luck - and I sure like the melodrama of the whle thing. I'm just a curious kinda guy though . .

I leave for a few minutes and you guys chase the Iceman away. Just when I was about to order a 55 gallon drum of zanio. I was just packing up my old super charger to send up to him so he could run with the big dogs....oh well. Your Camaro(s) are at fastlanecars.com. Nice 68 SS/RS, beautiful 72 split grill Z/28, and a 69 SS/RS with a 454. I wont even mention the GTO selection. Trouble is: this place is close to home and a constant temptation. Ice... be cool... you'll be back. Your not gone till WE say you're gone!!!!

    Don't worry, you're not alone!

I'm still alive and kicking around here, although quiet lately.

Hey, I just noticed the other day that the knobs for the light delay and dim push in and out. Is this just to make them easier to turn? Or is there an actually something that happens when they're in/out? I haven't noticed anything.

    Stan
  • smfransmfran Member Posts: 432
The knobs push in to kind of lock them in place at the setting you choose.
  • jeffbogjeffbog Member Posts: 63
Has anyone attempted to replace their rear speakers?

I have the standard, (non-Bose) system and noticed that like most other GM cars I have owned, the rear speakers sound kind of flat when the fader is shifted toward the rear. The stereo sounds great, but most of the range is from the front 4 speakers.

I haven't had a chance to look back there yet, but was hoping someone could offer some hints that might save some time, etc.

One more thing, I notice the load leveler tops off after every start regardless if someone or something is in the back. Usually after I back out in the driveway and start to pull away. My friends Bonne does it too. I assume this is normal.

Having my 2002 bonneville just a few weeks, I have to say so far the car is better than I thought it would be. It is really a great car, do not understand why it is not a really big seller compared to Camary, Honda etc etc. The engine is great and great on mileage, the looks are different and it is a cool car . I love it. Does anyone have any idea on the longevity of the bonneville. With routine care and maintaince I hope to keep it ten years. What do the experts think. Great car for the money
  • smfransmfran Member Posts: 432
I've had 5 Bonnevilles and have kept all from a minimum of 90,000 miles to 120,000 miles. My driving is 50/50 highway/city and I always do the routine maintenance like LOF but never anything else if the car is performing well.

    Ken,

sounds like a great Photo Op for Pontiac for a Red and Green Bonneville X-Mas picture.

The only problem I have since I washed and waxed the car is that the local bird population is using it for target practice!!

Plan on taking the Bonnie out to Gettysburg next week for Remembrance Day and get some more highway miles on the car. Do you think you will be done this way in the next two months? Let me know if your in the area.
    Enjoy the weekend everyone,

Where's the Bonneville from the excitement company in its TV ads???
  • mfahey1mfahey1 Member Posts: 419
First, everyone has said this much better than I could but it is a shame to see Dan leave us. If anyone follows Dilbert, check today's about the Town Hall meeting as it seems very apropos.
I went out today to do some errands, one of which was to get the car washed. I slapped the car wash swipe card, which is the size of a credit card, on the cup holder cover and went to take off. Slick as anything, the cover popped up and the card slipped quietly into the abyss in front of the console storage area. I could see it but no way was I going to be able to fish it out of there. Had to track down my smallest torx socket and take apart the storage area to retrieve it. As if limited functionality of the holder itself isn't bad enough, it being an unintentional repository for all things thin is possibly worse. Maybe Pontiac should include a torx socket in their emergency roadside kit.
  • tpkentpken Member Posts: 1,108
Atleast you didn't have to disassemble the front end again!!! lol

    Ken
  • ezraponezrapon Member Posts: 348
yes, he is gone. But not forgotten. speaking of removing the cup holder panel; my beverages sometimes spill into the traction control switch, another Pontiac bright idea. The switch is starting to stick and will need to be replaced. Is it easy to get to when the torx panel is removed? I notice the 2002 switch is under the radio. Maybe other switches have been fouled by diet coke as well.
  • mfahey1mfahey1 Member Posts: 419
I was so busy mumbling to myself that I didn't notice how easy the switch would be to get to. What I did basically opened up the area in back of the cup holder area, not in front of it.

I've had two Bonnevilles. One was a 1990 and is still running in Arizona with 200,000 miles on it. Gave it to my daughter in 1997 so I could buy a new one. My 97 is approaching 50,000 miles with nary a problem. This car is a real sleeper and compares favorably with cars costing much more. You get value for the money. I definitely would like another one with all the toys and performance. Hope GM keeps this car in their future plans.
  • refinerrefiner Member Posts: 59
Got the estimate for my car its 4K. Alot less than I thought. But it could go up once they get it all apart. I take it in Monday.
  • tpkentpken Member Posts: 1,108
but you'd better plan on another one in the next couple of years here or you may be permanently out of luck. Lots of rumblings to the effect that Bonneville may chase Olds down the road to memory city. Not sure what year will be the last.

Well car loving friends, my boys and I attended the New England International Auto Show yesterday in Boston. Had a great time - this has been an annual event for me since 1966!!!

So here are the highlights from my own perspective:

Pontiac - saw the first FWD car to exceed 200 mph - a 2001 Bonneville (and it was Spruce Green!!!!!) with 600hp - check this link http://www.pontiac.com/bonneville/speedrecord.html

Buick - Loved the concept Cielo - slide away top, suicide pillarless doors, gorgeous luxury interior, magnificent car.

Chevy - had a great video look at the concept Nomad sports wagon. Based on the 50's 2 door version - this car would give PT Cruiser a run for it's retro styled life.

Cadillac Escalade EXT - one of the most popular vehicles at the show (more luxurious version of Chevy's Avalanche conversion truck/SUV) - the most perfect example of conspicuous consumption I've ever seen. No thank you

New Altima by Nissan - yawn - looks better in photo layout than in person.

New Lexus ES300 - I'll take mine in any color offered - absolutely MAGNIFICENT automobile - a true luxury car at 32-38K

New Camry - cheaper version of above and a big feeling car now - seems like an avalon inside. Going to be HUGE success. With leather and loaded, the GLX is 31K, a bit pricey when a few bucks per month more buys the Lexus - but dramatically better than prior model.

New T-Bird - Show car was T-Bird blue (like ice blue with a hint of aqua. In contrast to the Altima, this car is far better looking in person than the (great looking) pics suggest. A winner for sure.

Exotics - Bentley Azure convertible - only costs $360K now. Can still buy water front property for that!!

OThers too numerous to mention - It's a great way to check out every car you want to see. Perfect way to car shop.

    Best to all

I am very close to purchasing an Impala. I believe the body and engine are shared with the Bonneville. The Impala has had some problems with it's engine cradle and the intermediate steering shaft. What about the Bonneville?
  • evandroevandro Member Posts: 1,108
The Impala shares the W platform with the Regal, Grand Prix and Intrigue. The Bonneville's platform is shared is Park Ave, Le Sabre, DeVille and Seville.
  • tpkentpken Member Posts: 1,108
No problems with ISS, cradle or anything else really on Bonneville. The 2000 model year intro seemed to be less affected than Impala by glitches and gremlins. It is marginally bigger - 2 inches I think - on the next sized chassis which seems to be pretty bullet proof.

Teo's analysis of the two cars over in the Impala forum is on the mark. I bought mine 6 months old and saved about 7K in doing so - thus the price to feature came out in favor of Bonneville for me whereas new pricing goes the other direction. I did get a car with 18K already on it - which was fine with me since I had really been looking for a preowned Impala LS and couldn't find one.

One noticeable difference in driving Bonneville vs Impala LS - the LS has quicker acceleration than the Bonneville SE or SLE. I prefer the measured yet responsive feel of my SE to the feather light touch you would use on the Impala from a stand still. Not a problem for one driver to get used to but I worried a bit about my wife going back and forth from it to her less responsive Suburban. May not be an issue for you.

How much travelling and cargo carrying do you expect to do? Impala has the fold down rear seat - Bonneville just a pass through. However Bonneville has the automatic load leveling which is not included (or available?)in Impala.

Good luck - you will enjoy either car immensely and if I were to trade today it would be a tough choice again for me. I do love both cars.

Traveling out to Gettysburg this Sat. for Rememberance Day. For myself, it will be a time to enjoy taking the Bonnie for some serious cruise'n. So far the tires have not been losing pressure and with traveling over Thanksgiving to Benton, PA (near Bloomsburg), it will be time for the car's first oil change. Perhaps the dealer will throw in some donuts for the occasion!?
With almost 2200 miles, I am enjoying the ride.
Hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable Thanksgiving holiday.

    Sorry sixxer - thought I was the only one . . .

if memory serves - you are in the Toronto area aren't you?

    maybe we could meet sometime?

(no, this isn't a bad attempt at internet dating)

I dont get back here as often as I'd like anymore
    - but if you want to - just let me know.

Actually, no, I'm not in the Toronto area. I'm in the Ottawa area. Our numbers appear to be growing out this way. Well, in drivers, not in here. I'm seeing more and more new Bonnie's on the road these days. Looks good!

GM has announced that it will be providing about 5,000 fleet vehicles for the 2002 Olympic Games representing all six divisions. About 150 vehicles will be built in Michigan, and the Bonneville -- along with the Aztek and Montana -- is the Pontiac representitive. Even though the fleet will be mostly trucks and SUVs, it's encouraging that the Bonne will be making an appearance as well!

Perhaps they'll start advertising it too - like that nice Grand Prix commercial I've seen lately - the young shopping, surfing couple. Sure would be nice to salvage Bonneville from the possible axe.

We made a quick trip to St. Louis this past weekend to see my nephew in a high school musical. Afterwards, when we came out to the car, there were two sweet young things by the car which of course was out in Timbucktoo. They commented on how much they liked the car which was what I believe was a first for me. Too bad my wife was with me(hehe).
There had been some talk earlier about what people would move to if the Bonneville were indeed discontinued. My brother's in-laws were also there with their Cadillac DTS. I must say that I thought it to be a very handsome car. I don't know if I would pop for the extra dollars but it goes on my list of cars to be considered.
We also had dinner with several old friends of ours, one of whom has a 2000 SE. He rode with me while the rest were in a different car. Anyway, I had to give him a demonstration of the differences between the SE and the SSEi. While I made a very quick lane change to demonstrate the handling differences, I also stomped on it whereupon his jaw dropped open. This is a person not easily impressed with a performance car since when I first knew him, he had a 67 Corvette. While I'm certainly not saying the two cars are comparable, it certainly opened his eyes. This got me to thinking that really, the SE and the SSEi are two different cars that just happen to be similar in appearance. Viva la differance.
  • tpkentpken Member Posts: 1,108
You're right - and I have made the point before in this forum and elsewhere that IMHO there are two distinctly different cars here. The SE model that I own is essentially the descendant of Pontiac's Catalina model years ago - a full sized family car that weighed in below the Bonneville in features and price. Today's SE model is more 'genteel' in appearance than its more assertive looking brethren the SLE and SSEi (which does more than just look the part). My SE with (your old) stabilizer bar s perfect for me -price and feature wise for now. Maybe someday an upgrade....????

Gee Mark - I bet those two lovelies were just trying to think of an excuse to talk to that refined 'mature' gentleman with the good taste in automobiles! Don't you think????

  • tpkentpken Member Posts: 1,108
OK everyone - time to mention a possible problem here. (Should really post this over in the 'problems' forum) I am beginning to wonder if my Bonneville is plagued by the infamous GM Intermediate Steering Shaft (ISS) affliction. Has anyone else notices 'clicks' and 'thunks' tavelling up from the brake pedal to the steering wheel when cornering or braking? It's not my imagination and I hope it's not that particular problem now that my warranty has expired.

Actually, it crossed my mind that since we were at a Catholic high school and the car has a University of Notre Dame sticker on it, maybe they were really admiring the sticker.
  • boosted1boosted1 Member Posts: 90
We love our Bonneville, and hope to get many more years out of it.

By the time we are ready to get a new car I have a feeling that GM will have discontinued the Bonneville. I think that we would look closely at the Cadillac Deville DTS. We rented a 2001 Deville once and I was very impressed with the power and feel for such a large car.

Maybe GM will come to their senses and keep the Bonneville around.
  • montanafanmontanafan Member Posts: 945
If you have the noise, just have the your dealer lube the shaft. Should be about $11 for lube and 3/4 hr for labor.
  • ezraponezrapon Member Posts: 348
we have a notre dame here in st. louis as well. Of course it is a catholic high school. Next time you plan on coming to the jewel of the Mississippi, let me know and bring your pulley. I have a puller, tools, and a heated garage. I am ready to move to a 3.25 from my current 3.4. You would be welcome to use my stuff. I'd offer you my old 3.4, but the factory pulley warped during the removal process and I can't gauarantee the same won't happen to the 3.4. Anybody know where I can find a 3.25. GTP site and SLP only show a 3.4? I am getting estimates on a cat back dual exhaust system to help out the 3.25. I need more speed!!! Midas seems to be in front right now.
  • mfahey1mfahey1 Member Posts: 419
Sounds good to me. I actually thought of contacting you but as usual, it was a whirlwind trip, down on Saturday morning and back on Sunday morning.
Now let's see, this may be how the conversation goes. Dear, we really need to go back to St. Louis. And why is that? Well, the Bonneville has been acting a little doggy lately so I need to do some more work to it. Whatever you say as long as you drop me off at West County Shopping Center or Crestwood Plaza. Actually, we are due to come back for sure in April when my other nephew plays in an Easter baseball tournament at Washington University.
For the money you paid for the puller, I certainly would have thought that it could remove the old unit without trashing it.
Good luck on the cat back. Did you go with the Raven mufflers last year and if so, what has been your opinion of them?
  • ezraponezrapon Member Posts: 348
I held off on the ravens cause last year I was considering moving to a new car and didn't want to waste the money. Now I really like the car again, go figure. There is another black SSEi, the twin of mine, right in my subdivision. It looks so cool coming at me with those chrome wheels spinning... words fail me! Got to add about 30 more HP and I'll drive it until I can afford my DTS.

I hope everyone of you has a great holiday and can relax and enjoy family and friends.

I get out of getting up early to cook turkey this year (since the oven is broken) to say nothing of the cleaning detail! Looking forward to a STRESSLESS day!!

We as Americans will certainly remember to think of those who are less fortunate this year - there will be many empty places around the various tables in the greater NY and D.C. areas. Let's say a prayer for each of our servicemen too.

    Best wishes to all

Hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving. I got a chance to take the Bonnie on the road this holiday to my sister's place 3 hours away from home. The car ran great and was a pleasure to drive. For the 6 hours of driving, I did see two mid 1990s Bonneville and two 2001-2002 Bonnies as well (one was Maple Red) and only one police car.

Ken, I am sure you will agree that this car is a great highway cruiser and I checked my dealers web site (Davis Pontiac) and they have 10-12 Bonnies on their lot. One can hope GM will wake up and promote a great car.

All the best and take care of all one's friends and family this holiday season.

  • tpkentpken Member Posts: 1,108
Stephen - I'm jealous of that 3 hour trip. Havent been on the road for more than my usual 1 hour commute for months and I'm ready to drive! Maybe Pa in Dec - we'll see.

Interesting that so many Bonnevilles are on the lot when there are scarcities on others. The Impala board mentioned sparce pickings on new Impalas and my local Chevy dealer has just one. Haven't stopped by Pontiac to check their inventory. They usually have no more than 2 Bonnevilles in stock. Will have to see.

Hope all had a great Thanksgiving. Ours was very relaxing.

Somehow, perhaps coinciding with the Thanksgiving visit of our two kids, my automatic login became disabled and since it had been so long since I actually had to login, I had completely forgotten my password and had to have it sent to me. Anyway, I'm back.
I don't know if anyone keeps track of the annual buying guide for Consumer Reports but it gave stellar ratings to the 2000 Bonneville. The only areas it fell down in were electrical, which I can certainly vouch for with two ignition module failures and body integrity which has had a number of comments from other posters. Overall, though, I thought it was an outstanding rating.
  • stnelstnel Member Posts: 338
Just thought I'd drop by to say I hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving (and you Canadians a nice day in general).

Consumer Reports: I only use Consumer Reports Online when I'm getting ready to make a purchase and then cancel it after a month. Don't know about recent ratings for the Grand Prix. I think when they give the GP the "Recommended" rating it's for the 3.8 L engine. I've got the 3.1 so I don't really know how it rates but I do enjoy the car.

I don't know if we're ever going to have a winter here in the South. We're still having highs in the 70's--sometimes close to 80. I'm ready for some cooler weather!!

Stnel - did you have any of those terrible T-storms that went through the Mississippi area?

I'd be glad to send you a can full of cold air someday - we grow a lot of it around here!

Hope everyone enjoyed the TG holiday. I sure did!!

    Greetings,

Last week I had to drive the family to Atlanta, GA for a funeral service. My SSEi performed perfectly! It was the first time that I've driven that far (900 miles and 16 hours each way.)

Too bad they don't have separate roads for tractor trailers!

    Peace.

  • evandroevandro Member Posts: 1,108
Yeah, I noticed the Bonnie's rating too. Not bad for the 1st model year. Usually the subsequent years the ratings improve even more. Let's just hope that the ratings keep on high as the years go by...

BTW, before the holiday I got a survey from JD Power about my Bonnie. It started with something like "you've had your car for a few weeks now..." and went on to enumerating possible problems. I had two: the seats were a little dirty on delivery and the headliner needed a slight trim where it meets the rear window. ;^)
  • mlm4mlm4 Member Posts: 401
You know, I never have received anything from GM, the dealer, JD Power or anyone regarding my Bonnie except for the one "thank-you" gift from Pontiac (it was a leather CD carrying case). No surveys, no junk mail (a good thing, no?), no Pontiac owner's magazine. It seems a little odd to me since I special-ordered a top-of-the-line flagship model, no less, and I must be in their system to have received the thank-you gift. When I bought my Tahoe in 1998, I got the standard dealership satisfaction survey from Chevy and a very nice thank-you gift: a carrying case with a thermal mug and Maglite, among other things. When my girlfriend bought her Alero earlier this year, Olds has been sending her mail as well (they seem very appreciative for the sale despite -- or perhaps in light of -- their impending doom).
Not that I am complaining, just wondering aloud. I just hope that if there are any recall or service notices (hopefully there will not be any) that I am still on their mailing list. The car has been running great and the only problem I have had to repair so far was a burnt-out fog lamp. Still have a small rattle in the right front door panel, not bad enough to fuss about. The rough idle when hot has pretty much gone away by itself, but not completely. Again, not bad enough to worry about.
Earlier this year I bought two front-end covers, one for the Bonnie and one for the Alero from an Olds dealer. The quality, construction and fit of the covers is very good; they were about $82 each. I have not used the cover on the Bonnie yet (other than to test fit it), but I did put it on the Alero when my girlfriend took two trips from Orlando to Pensacola. The cover did it's job of keeping the bugs off the front end, but the hood section left a scuff mark along the trailing edge where apparently it was flapping a bit. I tried to polish it out by hand, and it is mostly gone but not completely. It may need more agressive treatment. But it worries me to put the cover on the Bonnie now for that reason. Instead I just carry some quick detailer and clean the bugs off every day practically (a necessary nuisance in Florida).
  • mfahey1mfahey1 Member Posts: 419
The automotive section of the Chicago Tribune today interviewed someone from Pontiac and in the article, although it was not a direct quote or promise for that matter, it said that Grand Prix is to be redone in '03,Grand Am in '04 and drum rolls, Bonneville in '05. Maybe there's still hope.
  • tpkentpken Member Posts: 1,108
That would be great news, Mark. It would be a shame to kill off such a great automobile.

That bad weather in Mississippi was to the north so I missed it.

I'm waiting for some of that cold Maine air for you to bottle up and send here. We are suppose to get a cold front in a couple of days where the high will be in the 60's. I hope we're not in for a warmer than usual winter because the bugs are always worse that way.
  • tpkentpken Member Posts: 1,108
And I'll be glad to send off your bottle of Maine polar air as soon a it cools down again. Real balmy around here now. Will the 2 litre size be sufficient? lol

    Ken
  • mlm4mlm4 Member Posts: 401
    Hey Ken,

I'd love some of that Maine air too (when you get it back, and I'm sure you will), but I don't think my friends here in Florida would appreciate it so much. They moved here to get away from that frosty stuff (not me, I came for the job). So I guess I'll just have to settle for visiting my relatives in Boston and Portland, Maine, to get my share of the cold air. Just got a new set of Goodyears for the 4x4 Tahoe, I'm living in denial that it will never snow here. :-)
