I'll do that. Hopefully I can get a little closer to the Edmunds price. By the way, do the TDI's really get 50 mpg? And are they reliable?
  • roninjoutenroninjouten Member Posts: 201
I haven't really read much on TDI. I'm not a big diesel fan. Though i like the sound of them.

I was pleased with the dealer that I was using, but now, they have turned into a nightmare. They have had my car for 13 days. I got it back a week ago but it died within 45 minutes, they said it was the throttle body control unit. I am currently driving a rental car. I have been called a liar by the VW tech even though I did nothing to deserve it. They have damaged my car and won't own up to it. I love VW but I can't deal with this and the only other VW dealer in the state is over 300 miles away. My car will be up for sale in October, my Jetta was a wonderful car until I had them replace the battery. I am sad that its ended this way, I do love my Jetta GLS 1.8T.

Has anyone had problems with their oil pan being damaged in normal driving? My brother-in-law drives a 99 Jetta with the 2.8 V6. He has had his pan replaced 3 times cause they get damaged by potholes, road debris, etc. His VW dealer said they get a lot of these, usually 5-6 a week. Has anyone else had this experience? I was jonesing for a V6 Jetta, but this makes me concerned...Maybe the 1.8t has less of a problem with this?

For more TDI info, check out http://www.tdiclub.com or http://www.vwvortex.com. I can tell you from reading in here that TDIs do definitely get 40-50 mpg. And they last a long time too. But the price is higher to start, because there aren't many of them. And the maintenance is a little higher too.

Hey guys great dialog... anyway wondering what you think of a deal I'm hacking out with my local Houston VW cartel. 2001 Jetta Wolfsburg 5sp, dk Blue, sunroof, monsoon, and 3040 demo miles on him. I've got them down to $19500 but in leu of the mileage, think they could do better. I'm very interested in what you guys think. I've just sold my 92 Jetta and dyeing to upgrade. Thankxs!
  • roninjoutenroninjouten Member Posts: 201
If that's out the door, excellent. If that's before tax and license, you're getting ripped off. My last quote on a WE w/sunroof and monsoon was 19250. 12 miles on the odometer.
  • mpgmanmpgman Member Posts: 723
They won't pass the NY emissions test so NY can't register them. If you bring one in titled in another state with 7500 miles or more on it, you can title it used and get an emissions test waiver. Simple as that. By the way, VW won't let dealers sell TDIs in NY or CA because if the sales were appreciable, they would lower VW's overall fleet emissions averages and put them in the fine zone. May be the same reason that MB stopped selling the diesels here. Sorry.

VW has chosen to limit sales of TDIs in CA during 2001 to 800 units. Many of these have already been delivered (looks like it was mostly Beetles and Golf 4 doors). No CA dealer will be able to sell anymore TDIs this year to CA customers once the 800 cars allocated have all been spoken for. There is a similar situation in NY, and perhaps Mass too (but I'm not certain about Mass). TDIs are always in short supply, making finding the exact car you want at a decent price hard... this additional restriction by VW sales makes it just that much harder. If you're persistent, you can probably still find something close to what you want... tho' as mentioned above you'll have an easier time of it if you're willing to go out of state to do so. You CAN register cars purchased from out-of-state in CA (for example) w/o hassle.... all US VWs have the exact same 50-states-legal emissions certifications. The 800-cutoff is a SALES policy adopted by VW, not any kind of state law. Very recent used TDIs (a year or two old) can often tend to cost very close to what MSRP on a new TDI costs, due to the high demand. Of course, considering used cars opens up your choices somewhat and can reduce your search time.
    end quote

My understanding is that TDI is 50 state emissions legal and can be registered in New York. A very limited number of new TDI's are sold in New York. Same situation in CA.

We just went to the showroom monday night, and they told us it started out at 2.9 for 2 years and goes up 1% for each year. so for 5 years it's 5.9%.
  • mpgmanmpgman Member Posts: 723
I can't speak for CA, but no new TDIs are being sold in NY this year. VW prohibits it. TDIs cannot pass NY emissions tests as presently configured. The 50 state emissions or NE emissions certifications apparently won't work in NY for diesels, only for gas models. Only used TDIs, initially registered in another state, can be brought into NY and registered. Then you get a waiver for the emissions test. Now unless VW has done something to address the emissions issue lately.......I have not heard anything about this.
Call NY DMV to verify the above.

Well the finance dept. of the dealer Im working with is turning out to be a nightmare.

With $10K OR $15K down, they won't go any lower than 6.9%, and quoted me rates up to 14.9% depending on the term!!! My credit is good, and he said all "approved" customers get the same rate.

And he said the rate depends on the state and location of the dealer. He said there are no 5.9% available on the WE anywhere, since it is a 'special' model.

This has me all so disgusted, esp. since most other manufacturers have rates < 3% currently.

I don't know what to think. Am I being jerked around? I am this || close to start looking for another type of car.

Any input would be appreciated on rates people here have just obtained, and your location.

Have you told the dealer to look at VW's web site?

It specifically includes the Wolfsburg in the financing campaign. While it does say that dealer participation varies, they have changed it to include the Wolfsburg. I know this is true because I bought mine April 24th. When I checked the financing page the week before, the Wolfsburg was explicitly excluded, then it changed, about a week after I bought my car(of course!)

The site specifically states that rate for the Wolf start at 3.9%, while other models start at 2.9%.

Maybe you should talk to another dealer, if they won't come clean. Are they even going through VW credit?

    Good luck!
  • smitpatsmitpat Member Posts: 13
Yes, you should definitely go the VW.com page, go to the specials section on the home page, and print out the special pricing for Jettas. Through May 31st it's 3.9% (24 mos.), 4.9% (36 mos.), 5.9% (48 mos.), and 6.9% (60 mos.). GET 'EM!
  • obmotobmot Member Posts: 61
Thanks, that link is what i had been looking for (the specials link is hard to find on the home page)...

Anyway, this dealer gave me a rate of 6.9% for 60 months - as per the VW site; BUT, when I asked about 48 months, he quoted a rate of 9.9% (instead of 5.9%) since the WE is a "special" model - and pressured that I was much better off going with the "lower" 60 month payment - and also that he could not guarantee that 6.9%/60 rate later this week if I didn't complete the paperwork. This screamed of kickback.

Tomorrow I am going to request a refund of my deposit - I definitely sense some b.s. here and I will approach other dealerships in the area.

Kinda' sux, it's too bad VW doesn't have a bit more control over their dealerships' finance operations. You'd think the Germans of all people would have a very strict and orderly process!

I test drove a '95 Jetta with automatic transmission. The car is pretty noisy - makes a rumbling noise - when you accelerate quickly. Otherwise it seems OK. I was told this is true of all '95 Jettas with automatic. Can anyone shed some light on this? Is this true?

Saturday is the day -- FINALLY! -- I pick up my VR6 Jetta. The thing is, I have two financing options: I can either go with the VW 4-year, 4.9% financing, or I can get a home-equity loan through my bank that's 4.9% for the first 6 minths, then 1/4-percent below prime for the rest of the loan. The VW loan rate is locked in, which is comforting, but the home-equity loan is tax-deductible. Interest rates are really low right now, which makes the home-equity option more appealing, but they might go up in a year or two. Does anyone have any thoughts here? I'd appreciate it...

Go for the 6.9% for 60 months and get that WOLFIE home... I got the 6.9% on my GLS before it dropped to 5.9% while Wolfsburg's were not on the program. BTW do you have RCB bank down in Texas? Up here in OK this bank is doing 5.9% for 60 mos on new car financing. Maybe less for less years. Good Luck
  • balticjetta18tbalticjetta18t Member Posts: 146
Do you think it is wise to use your home equity as collateral towards a generally depreciating item such as an automobile? Yes the rate is awesome... If you do this, then definitely get some "Gap Insurance" on the loan somehow to offset any neg. potential equity in a "total loss situation" as termed by your car insurance co.

Does anyone know if you can haggle the advertising fee at Volkswagon?
  • vwguildvwguild Member Posts: 1,620
You can haggle over anything that you like...Typical Ad Assoc. is $50, $75, $100
unless, of course, you are in a major market...LA., NY., etc.

To me, time is Money...would I waste my time trying to hondle a .003% discount
    on anything...probably not..75 divided by 25000.

    Latte from Starbuck's $2.50 - .003%=$.0075...

I picked up my galactic blue VR6 yesterday, and it is a beauty. I had forgotten how fast that bad boy is! It's an absolute joy to drive. But I've got one problem: The front passenger's seatbelt doesn't extend at first -- you have to yank on it several times before it releases. Has anyone else had this problem? Is there something simple we're not doing here, or do I need to get it fixed?
  • bluejettabluejetta Member Posts: 272
That should not happen. Take it to the dealer immediately. They are required to give that immediate attention as it's a safety issue.

are u pulling the seatbelt quickly? if u are then u may be locking it, by activating the tensioner

    Does anyone know:

    1) What VW's retail price is for a bike rack/roof rack?
    2) If it is worth not getting a stock CD changer and then buying one from Panasonic etc?
    3) If it is worth getting the cold weather package...ie. does it work?
    4) What the extended warranties are like? How much?
And my final question...Should I get the WE? Has anyone out there had any serious problems...like the engine?

Thanks for all your help. This site has been awesome!
  • bluejettabluejetta Member Posts: 272
    1) What VW's retail price is for a bike rack/roof rack?

Go to http://www.vw.com for pricing. They have an online catalog for ALL accessories there. Heck, you can even get VW barbeque sauces!!

    2) If it is worth not getting a stock CD changer and then buying one from Panasonic etc?

The Panasonic is much cheaper and is virtually the same unit that VW installs. You will also need an adapter. Go to http://www.crutchfield.com The install is very easy and is best done with the brackets from VW.

    3) If it is worth getting the cold weather package...ie. does it work?

The heated seats are awesome on a cold evening. Open the sunroof and crank on the butt warmers. My wife thinks it's romantic. I haven't had the need for the heated mirrors or window washers as I garage my car. They do get warm though.

    4) What the extended warranties are like? How much?

That depends on your local dealer, It varies by area. Some banks and credit unions also offer these services. If you plan on keeping the car for some time, then it's worth it. Also, most of the extended warranties have cancellation provisions and you can get money back.

And my final question...Should I get the WE? Has anyone out there had any serious problems...like the engine?

The 1.8T is a very reliable engine. It's also used by Audi and is the same basic engine as in the awseome Audi TT. Also, if you are looking to 'tune' and 'chip' your car, this engine is very tunable and can be turned into a 200HP-plus monster!

    Hope that helps!

Excellent answers from bluejetta. I have been in my WE for two days now, and I love it already. Completely worth it. (sunroof, Monsoon, cold package, extended warranty).
  • jbalserjbalser Member Posts: 13
I just got my wife a WE on Saturday - White/Black cloth, sunroof, monsoon, in-dash CD, cold weather, etc., etc. We were looking for a 1.8T, leather, luxury, monsoon, CD. We couldn't find the car here on earth so we went with the WE after a test drive. The CD changer was an option at 695 and the in-dash, we got the price low enough where it did not even factor in the price. The extended warranty lists for 995 for the platinum, 84 months 72,000 miles bumper to bumper upgrade. You can negotitate this price a little if you feel like doing so with the finance guy after haggling with the salesman. Good idea if you plan to stay in the car for a while. Also, VW warranties the turbo charger for 10yr/100K miles. There is also a 10yr/100k mile drivertain warranty standard. The cold weather package actually works really well. I garage this car so the side view mirror defrosting point did not sell me.

The 1.8T is an awesome engine. We also tested the 2.8 manual and found it to be almost too powerful for the size of the car. They also wanted 28K for a loaded GLX and I laughed as the salesman stood in front of the BMW sign as if it was a halo on his head. The only thing we did not get was leather. But the cloth seats are nice and sporty. And the price was very attractive for the options. Save your money and get the WE. You won't be disappointed.

    bluejetta,

When you say use the brackets from VW, do you mean the ones that are built into the car. Or are there brackets that the dealer should have given me, or purchased?

I purchased the Panasonic cd-changer and installed it in the little cubby hole in the trunk. It's vertical obviously, with the Panasonic brackets screwed in the 20% holes on the unit. I then screwed the brackets into the two holes (one on each side) of the cd-changer holder in the cubby hole. Did I install it properly?

    Thanks
  • plugbugplugbug Member Posts: 27
VW does make a pair of brackets that adapts the Panasonic player to the Jetta trunk bracket. They were, for the pair, $15. I used those for my installation, and they worked great. But if you were able to install the Panasonic without the brackets and it's screwed in securely, don't worry about it. The object is to make the changer fit tightly, so if you were able to do that without the VW brackets then you're set. By the way, did you figure out how to use the MIX feature so it randomly samples from every CD, not just one?
  • obmotobmot Member Posts: 61
Well I've made a lot of progress the last several days.

I dumped the Houston dealer after all their BS, and am working with the dealer in Dallas that has the car that was going to be shipped here to Houston (Blue/Black WE). No WEs with cold package down here at all :(

Anyway, the Dallas dealer has been very pleasant to deal with and said 6.9%/60months is their finance rate (as per VW website). They will also register/title the car in a different state (I'm a student) which the houston dealer was very reluctant to do (and they also quoted 14.9% APR 60 months if I didn't title it in Texas??).

I hope to drive up there and get the car in two weeks. My final cost is $20,300 before TTL for WE with monsoon/sunroof.
  • vtwatersvtwaters Member Posts: 24
No, I haven't figured out how to use the MIX feature for all the cd's. I was suppose to read the manual the other day when I installed it. Am I to assume that this information isn't in the manual.

BTW: Has anyone used the open space in the console under the cup holders for anything other than a CD player? I thought about purchasing a navigation system, or the 4 cassette holder, but the $60 price tag @ vw.com seemed pretty steep.
  • plugbugplugbug Member Posts: 27
vtwaters, the MIX info is in the manual, but kind of hard to find. At first, I thought you could only use the MIX feature on one CD, which is pretty lame. But here's how you get a true random feature: Put the HU on CD, then push and hold the SCAN button. After a few seconds it will beep. Then push the right arrow on the left/right switch under the volume knob. It will then say something like "CD MIX 1." Turn the volume knob one tick to the right so it reads "CD MIX 6," then push and hold the SCAN button again until it beeps, and you're good to go.
  • vtwatersvtwaters Member Posts: 24
plugbug, thanks for the info. I'll test it out when I leave work today.
  • jettagls18tjettagls18t Member Posts: 7
    plugbug,

do you know how to get the HU to display the play time on the display instead of the CD/Track information?

I can get it to display time ellapsed if I go forward/backwards on a track; however, the time displays for 3 seconds and then it goes back to the track info. Any ideas?

Also do you hear a 'click' sound from the speakers when you break or us=e the turn signal.

    Thanx.
  • plugbugplugbug Member Posts: 27
I don't know if you can get it change the display or not. I would mess around with the SCAN button and see what happens with that. When you hold SCAN down for a while, a volume number automatically appears in the display. I don't know what that means -- that's got to be some kind of default setting, but I don't know for what. And no, I don't hear a click from the speakers when I brake or use the turn signal. That sounds like something is a little crossed up in your electrical system, but I'm no expert...
  • bluejettabluejetta Member Posts: 272
Since the other questions have all been answered, I'll attack the MIX feature. On the Monsoon the default is MIX1, where when you press the MIX button, it only plays one CD randomly. To activate MIX6 do the following:

Press SCAN and hold until the VOLUME option shows up. Release the button. This is the volume that the HU defaults to when you turn it on, no matter where the volume was when you turned it off. You can adjust that with the volume knob.

With VOLUME showing, press SCAN again. Then you will see MIX1. To change it to MIX6 turn the volume knob. There are only two selections: MIX1 or MIX6. Then press SCAN again to take the HU back to normal mode. Now press MIX and it will play random tracks from all six cds.

Obmot you should be able to get 20500 out the door, tax and license included, for a 01 WE, moonroof, sunroof, and in-dash CD.
  • obmotobmot Member Posts: 61
The invoice for the WE I got is about 19,750 after they add various Texas fees, destination, etc. Tax is $1300. That brings total up to $21,100. I am paying invoice + $500. So my total will be $21,600.

There is no way they will sell to me below invoice, and $20,500 + TT&L means the car itself is $19,200 - and there is no way to get that. Also the blues/blacks sell immediately here, so I offered the $500 premium to snag the car. I feel comfortable with my $21,600 out the door price. Only wish there was ONE WE in TX with cold package!

Where did you get those numbers? I have the invoice for a WE with roof, monsoon, and cold weather at $19,723. With tax that makes it about $20,900...so I'm thinking I can drive off the lot happy at that price.... any cheaper than that, I'll be extremely happy.
Thanks for all the comments... you people have been great!

Anyone know where I can get a cassette holder similar to the one vw.com sells. VW has it for about $60, but I would think you can get it for less.
  • roninjoutenroninjouten Member Posts: 201
I had two different VW dealers offer me the WE with moonroof, monsoon and seat heaters for 19,300. One in LA offered me the car for 19,100. Maybe VW raised prices.
  • obmotobmot Member Posts: 61
I do know there is $133 extra on the WEs with the new side curtain airbags. My invoice for WE with sunroof and monsoon (no cold) is 19741. Tax/T/L is about $1400

I offered 20300 for the car ($600 over invoice) + TTL so I will be out about $21600 or so. This does not include any CD player.
