I have had my Focus DX Sedan (automatic) for 7 months. I like it less and less each day, even though I have had no major problems - yet. I am especially disappointed with the acceleration and handling. My old 95 Escort had twice the acceleration and road feel. Merging onto an Interstate at 70 mph is not fun. I also feel that the car is top heavy and acts as if it is gong to tip in some curves. Gas mileage continues to low. I also don't understand the set-up of the wipers. The passengers side has much more coverage and there is a drip that is left to run down in front of the driver. Finally I received a surprise when I went to have the oil changed. The car takes 5W20 oil which is hard to find. I was not at the dealer and was told that there is a $10.00 surcharge for that grade of oil. A basic oil change is almost $40.00 The only real plus is that the interior is larger than any other small car out there. My family and I previously owned 6 Escorts and I would take any of them back for this car. Next car will be a Honda or Toyota, soon!
Hello you bought the base LX ( not DX) with an automatic what did you expect. you sit thereand complaint about the fleet model focus with the anemic 2.0 spi engine with an automatic, lets not forget you have the model with tiny 14inch wheels don't blame Ford for forcing you to buy the cheapest Focus . You are just bitching , "I also don't understand the set-up of the wipers. The passengers side has much more coverage and there is a drip that is left to run down in front of the driver." this is not a defect, buy some new wipers and solve your problem.
The focus isn't the problem you had expectations of your vehicle that was never intended to be met. You should have spent the extra money and got the Zetec engene with the fatter anti roll bars. Ask the question what else you could buy for the money you spent.

getting 20-22 on the highway...automatic SE wagon...700 miles...This is way off the EPA mark of 31...dealer says not to bring in on poor mileage until 3500 miles...Any feedback out there???...Will this mileage get better over time???...
You are either have a major problem or don't know how to measure Fuel economy. remeber your car is way too new to judge econmy. wait till 3000 miles at least. BTW all cars have this thing called engine break in.
The way to tell is to fill you tank up, reset trip odometer, and drive tll gas light comes on. The gas light comes on after 10 gallons are gone, so you have a 3.2 gallon reserve. so if you travelled 320 miles until the enginlight comes on you have gotten 32 MPg.
My focus now has 10,000 miles and runs okay mileage is still not whats advertised, brakes are now a problem. Took it in today due to trunk not shutting good the mechanics laughed and said you bought the worst mistake ford made since the Edsil or Pinto he took his hand and twisted the trunk to line it up and it twisted like paper what poor quality metal he said that the brake problems is terrible and that it keeps many of their mechanics busy replacing rotors and brakes . He said the cars run good, poor mileage for the engine, poor build quality and workman ship and he said some of the most cost cutting parts he has ever seen FORD use. I guess I should have listened and bought a Japan made car but I learned an expensive lesson next one will be Subaru or Toyota maybe even a honda
You have no complaint. all you have is what you heard from people who fix broken cars for a living. Worry about what happens to your car, and from what I hear, you are complaining about the "trunk not lining up" There was a TSB on that problem and bending the decklid to fit was not the remedy. Your good friend with all that great info was too lazy to use a wrench to line up your trunk properly.
Again why do you care if your decklid was bent like paper? your hood is far more prone to bending butthe same thing is true on every other car, I could understand if the lid bent while you were cloing it but it didn't did it? Never let anyone tell you should hate you car the Focus is a great Car. it is just that people are going tobe louder if they have problems than if they do not.
I have a 2001 Focus ZTS sedan w/ the 16" wheels. The sticker on the door says that the pressure should be 34psi for 16" wheels with 205/50R/16 tires (32psi for 14" and 15" wheels) My $.02
Biker 16 I just have a problem with a car wether it is a ZTEC or 2.0 or what ever that is no were near the mpg as it is suppose to get. And judging from these boards IT IS A PROBLEM as is the brake and rotors. I looked a quite a few FOCUS on the lots in the past few weeks and people on here are right when they talk of the poor lining up of hoods, dashes, etc. Why take up for a company that knowingly uses inferior parts and cuts corners just look at the Firestone fiasco . The FOCUS maybe an okay car for some but at it's current price it is absolutely no bargain, you can get a HONDA for pennies more, now that the models are changing and it is so much better in quality and workmanship as well as holding its value, the price of 2000 and 2001 on the whosale block has drastically fallen in the last 2 months it is ridiculous, just check some dealer whosale auctions they must know something they are only bringing aroud 50% of their purchase price in some auctions. CHECK it out Glad You Love yours I dont hate mine it's just dispointing but I guess I should have known that its a Ford.
Hey all, just wanted to chime in here... I've got a smooth 30k miles on my 2000 Focus ZTS (in less than 1 1/2 years!!! Oy, too much driving!). Anyways, the brake dust is a pain, but you can fix that when you get the brakes replaced... I've had no problems otherwise w/ the brakes. My car has been serviced *0* times, can't say I'm disappointed about that. As for mileage, I keep pretty good track of mine, and I'm getting around 25-27 mixed highway/city, and around 30 when I do mostly highway... so it IS possible. And I fly through the streets up here in north jersey, so it's not that I'm doing a nice cozy 55 down the turnpike.
So be patient, it took some time to break the engine in (I was getting around 23-25 mpg early on)... This car has been nothing short of wonderful, and although it doesn't have the pickup of a Vette, once you get moving you can zip in and out of traffic as well as the next guy.
Enjoyed 24 month with my ZTS but for $17200 a 1999 Continental with 57046 miles + sunroof + leather + traction control + Alpine Audio seems like a move in the right direction.
Im willing to part with my ZTS for $11,800. Leather, side impact bags and ABS. burcroff@yahoo.com. My ZTS has 22,045 miles. It was a pleasure to drive but I want the moonroof and other ammenities the Continental has.
I think the Focus is great, it will continue to keep people talking about these "exciting" vehicles. The SVT was something I was going to wait for but I decided to look at bigger vehicles.
Thanks for your feedback in advance, I've enjoyed participating in this board. Hope my comments were helpful.
I just received the K&N air filter for my Focus today. I can't wait to install it and enjoy the benefits. I had one in my '98 Escort and it worked great. The engine gets to breathe much better at higher rpm's and makes passing much better, not that it isn't good now, but it makes a big difference. Next week I will install my amateur radio gear.

what is your problem with your focus? that is my point. you talk of everyone elses problems but what about yours. your trunk is fixed under warranty, If you check out the forums for the new Civic you will hear the same things. The panel gap "could" be better but that doesn't go hand and hand with reliablilty or quality.
I ask you again what is wrong with YOUR car. never judge boards like this because everyone comes here to complain. yet I still see alot of people very happy with thier Focus, like myself.
Sorry you are so unhappy about someone elses focus.
I suggest you check out http://focaljet.com/ and try to persuade other focus owners that thier cars are of crappy quality.
or try to persuade these civic owners that thier radios are high quality buy they dont work.
The car. Why would anyone suggest that it is O.K. for any car, regardless of price, not handle well, have adequate acceleration, or any these other problems. Acceleration and handling are really safety factors. I was hoping that acceleration would improve after the engine was broken in. After all the 1985 Escort L (base model) I once owned had better pick up with a 1.6 Liter. It also handled better on 13 inch tires. Also, why should I have to correct a problem with wipers on a brand new car?? What else could I have bought for the money?? Chevy Cavalier, Pontiac Sunfire, Dodge Neon, Nissan Sentra,Toyota Echo, Honda Civic, Hyundai Excel, Kia Sephi, Chevy S-10, Ford Ranger, Saturn SL-1, off the top of my head. Finally, I also went with the LX because it did not have the center console. The car is far too narrow for a console. It takes up much needed room. However, most car makers do the same thing. I think it makes any car feel smaller.
I have a 2000 LX I bought in Oct. 2000. The only problem has been a water leak where the cowl had to be re- sealed. No problems with the brakes, Gas mileage 25 - 30 mpg and I drive 70 - 80mph. Took it in for one re-call and it was in and out with no fuss. The get up and go isn't all that great but once you get going its fine. What can You expect with the base engine. The trunk lid does close and open hard. Will have to get that looked at. I would buy another one but with the Ztec engine this time. I like it.
We just got a ZTS a couple weeks ago. So far the car is very nice (with temps in the '90s around here, I especially love how quickly the A/C cools the cabin down). Only two things I don't like:
It's impossible to set or release the parking break without either banging my wrist against the bin or having to crook my arm in an odd position. The thing pivots so you can swing it up by 90 degrees, but when I do that, I bang my elbow against it when doing something with the brake.
The other annoyance: How you have to remember to turn Recirc on every time you get in the car. There's something to be said for good old-fashioned non-computerized A/C levers!
what in your opinion is adequate accelleration? 0-60 in 11 secs, 10 secs, or less than 9 sec.
the 1991 escort lx did 0-60 in little over 10 secs the focus LX does the same. speed feels different in the focus than in the escort, it feels more relaxed
I have driven an LX focus it does handle differently than the higher foci but it not all that differently. If you read any of the reviews of the car no one has complained about the handling.
I think I know what you are having problems with.
tell me do you dislike the road feel through the wheel or through the chasis?
If throught the wheel it is has to be the tires I have no complaints about the road feel in Focus nor has anyone else I have heard from, it is the best feature of the car.
the tippyness you feel is in your head it is over 3 inches higher than in you escort. It is called head toss if you do push the car to it's lateral limits you will see that the car will lean til it's limit and go no further. It recived 4 stars on the federal rollover index, the Focus is no SUV it doesn't rollover. I challenge you to go to a empty parking lot and really give the car what it wants a good workout.
My friend said that the car was tippy until I took him through a couple of fast turns and he regained his confidince.
The increased Hip point gives the focus all of that room the price is greater sensation of body roll. the solution is to replace the US shocks Like I am with euro shocks form the S2 ZX3. they don't limit roll but they slow down the rate of roll, for better control. The ride is firmer but still plush, and the shocks let the tail slide out easier.
I have had my 2001 Focus for 9 months with no problems. Except for 5 days ago, I could not put my key in the lock cylinder to start the car. I had the car towed to the Ford Dealer and they replaced the part. I asked the Service Advisor if this was a common problem and she said no but there were a couple of other cars that came in with the same problem. Has anyone heard of this being a recall?
So far, so good with the K&N air filter. I have noticed an improvement on acceleration and it has a smother idle. I will check back in next week as I tackle the RT.66 hills of Connecticut. Best 73 Randy
What you say about road feel makes sense. I like road feel through the wheel and not the body. The Focus definitely has it through the body. The ride is very smooth, but I feel as though I do not have control of the car the way I should.
Maybe it is the shocks, maybe it is me. I will say that I have been driving the car for almost 8 month now and I still feel guarded each time I get in to go somewhere. This same thing happened once when I bought a 1993 Tuarus. I had it for 14 months before I had to get rid of it. I traded for an Escort and was very happy. I was never able to get comfortable with the Taurus.
When I get a chance I will try the parking lot thing, but I highly doubt that I have this car a year from now. Maybe I just bought the wrong car for me.
I test drove 4 cars this weekend (Elantra, Civic LX, Protege LX 2.0, and ZX3), and I have narrowed it down to the Pro and the Focus. Unfortunately, I am in the market for a 4 door, 5-Speed Zetec, but the only 5-Speed on the lot was the ZX3. So I drove that and I LOVED it! I couldn't believe the (apparent) difference in power between the ZX3 and the other cars. Now I have to wonder if the 4-door Foci have the same type of performance as the ZX3, or if the extra weight of the 4-door has a significant impact on performance.
Also, are the 16-inch 6-spoke rims on the ZX3 available on a 4-door?
Any input would be greatly appreciated. Oh, and by the way, I have narrowed it down to the Pro and the Focus.
I'm a poor graduate student looking for a good deal on a new car. I'm considering the Focus, but I have some questions for any owners out there. How's the transmission? Most Ford cars from the 90s on have been notorious for bad trannies and I was hoping they corrected this problem on the Focus. I also can't decide if the SE model with the 130 hp engine is worth the extra cash. I will probably get the manual trans which usually helps performance somewhat and I don't really need the power package (door locks, windows, etc.) but AC is a must. And if anyone knows how it handles in the snow, that would be great. Any other info or warnings would be appreciated.
If you get the Focus, I would definitely get the Zetec engine. I test drove the SE with the Zetec and even then it "felt" slow. I cannot imagine what it would have felt like if it had the base engine in it.
I also have a '93 Ford Escort with a manual transmission and have had no problems with the transmission so I have no idea what you are talking about when it comes to Ford transmissions of the '90s.
And I am currently in the process of replacing a '91 Escort (Pony, 88hp, 5-spd), with 160K, and the original clutch. No transmission problems to speak of. In fact, it has been amazing for a car that originally stickered at just $8000. I'm gonna miss it.
I have a 2000 SE sport I love it. The performacne of the sedan should be equal to the ZX3 the sedan only weighs 50 lbs more. If you want a Hatchback with 4 doors you should check out the 2002 Focus ZX5. same size as the ZX3 but with 2 extra doors.
Well guys and Gals, I'm back again, with my Wife's 2000 Focas ZTS. Monday Aug 14 my wife pulled into the driveway, and had a rterrified look on her face. She asked me to listen to the noise when the car was in gear . Well, I drove the car and it sounded like the tranny was going to fall out at any moment! I called the towing company, and THEN Ford Customer Service, to log the problem. I then called NEWMAN FORD HYUNDAI Rt 28 Salem NH, where she bought the car. I was told to tow it in, as they usually say. I then told the service writer to ask Mr Newman to call me. I told them they needed to address this car as a LEMON. I've had the car in for 8 recalls...whell bearings in April 01 the Car has 29007 miles on it.. and now this happens I think I've had it with the car.. to date we have had: wheel bearing replaced we have complained every time the car went into the shop.. even for oil changes. wiring replaced. 4 tires replaced <at MY expense because the dealer said the tires were NOT covered for early wear out ( this was due to the wheel bearings gone bad) the dealer creased the trunk lid and tried to hide the screwup done by his technition's screwdriver pushing the wiring under the supports and then tried to tell me my wife did it. The dealer hasn't responed to me as of yet (Mr Newman) and I guess I'm going to have to wait til he calls me. We have had nothing but bad things happen to us so far, and FORD hasn't been responsive yet either. I requested a FORD REP to contact us, this was done back in April 2001, and to date NOTHING.. I wonder if any of you have had the same troubles as us. I wouldn't wish this on any of you, and I DO hope that most of you Focas owners are having good luck with your cars, as they ARE fun to drive!. I guess 8 recalls, and many times to the dealer over structural problems and mechanical failures hasn't gotten any attention. I wonder whet WILL get his atention? Any suggestions?? besides and UZI? Just kidding on that one..
Class3, Sounds like you've had your share of problems. If you want your car treated as a lemon, and want to go through the process, YOU must initiate it. The dealer will probably be of little help. See post 144 in this discussion board. Follow the instructions in your owner's manual.
yes Mike. we have already gone through the service manager.. the finance manager (who by the way advised us to lemon it out) and now the Customer Service people at Ford. All of which are little use. Unfortunately, I have innitated a DSB on the vehicle, and was advised to contact the State regarding lemon laws. I asked for my Wife's service records, and as I figured, they "can't trace it all back" to when we reported all the trouble with the vehicle. I'm resorting on Ford's customer service records, (which aren't available to any of us) to help substantiate our claim. I'm faced with a decision of going to the news media about it, but I think that will only make a bad thing worse, as the communication will break down. To date Aug 17 the Owner of the dealership hadn't called me yet, and I suspect he won't.. we took possession of the car, as my wife needed transportation, but the dealer was willing to keep it on the lot. They said, "that's your choice" and hung up from us. We are fed up with both the dealer and Ford, just because it's gone on for such a long time.
I would simply put the car up for sale. The add would give all the "details", like bought at, been in shop this many times, have had this many problems, dealer has or has not done this or that, currently known problems with vehicle are, and list them all making sure they are accurate. Then I would simply ask for someone to "make an offer". I saw a story on TV where a guy did this with a Cadillac. He got a brand new one. Also, it would't hurt to send a copy of the add to the dealer and to Ford.
Check out the Mazda Protege. Check it's Consumer report ratings. Look at a Car and Driver review of 12 small cars done last year where the Pro was rated number one. I think you'll be pleased. Oh and Ford does own 30% of Mazda and woe of woes, in 2004 both cars are going to share components. I just bought a Pro-ES 2.0 and am very pleased. This car has a low resale value though, which could make it a good used car.
I've read references here about the rubber trim surrounding the headlights. One of ours came apart while on the freeway and I've tucked it under the hood as gluing seems an impossible solution. How have others solved this simple, but annoying, problem? Must the entire plastic/rubber combo surround be replaced? Finally, would this be covered on the 3/36,000 bumper-to-bumper factory warranty?
My wife loves this 2000 SE, although I think that 17 mpg is pretty bad.
I'm now at 3500 miles on my 2001 SE wagon and am now getting right around 30-32 mpg on the highway...up until about 2000 miles it was around 20 mpg...
In town it's fun, of course, but we're surprised to find it's great on the highway also...my wife (who originally pouted about not getting an Accord) is now fighting me to do the highway driving...
Big plusses: 1. handling, handling, handling 1a. easy entry/exit 2. quick, cold air 3. speakers, radio 4. comfortable room/seating for 4 adults. 5. bright headlights. 6 tight body 7. quiet enough ride on hwy..
My friend is the used car buyer at one of the largest GM dealerships in the nation. He just came back from a sale a purchase 7 used Focus sedans Both 2000 and 2001 he paid no more than $7800 for the 2001s and between $6900 and $7400 for the 2000. He said the resale is way down. Could it be due to all of the problems people have with this vehicle. I know I am mad about it my 2001 is now worth half of its purchase price, you cant sell or trade it or you loose your [non-permissible content removed] so we are stuck with them. Check out other auction figures thaey are available on line these cars are NOT bringing anything its a real poor happening for Focus owners
I've left several posts around here to see if anyone else is having the same problems I'm having. I have a 2000 wagon with the Zetec engine and automatic with 17,000 miles:
1. Key won't go into the ignition. My key was cranky going into the ignition several times, but I didn't think much about it. Thursday it wouldn't go in AT ALL. I tried for 20 minutes (yes, I turned the key both ways, and also tried my spare key). I finally called a tow truck. He worked on it for about 10 minutes after he got there (since he had no idea how he was going to tow the car locked in Park with the wheels turned). Finally it went in for him, and I thought I was lucky. Until Airport Marina Ford in L.A. told me that they had no problem getting the key in, and that they won't do anything until the problem happens again (read that, until I'm stuck God knows where with a key that won't go in the ignition). I'm getting tired of having to fight with Ford "Customer Service." I HATE complaining. (An aside: I had a Honda for nearly 10 years and called headquarters ONCE in that time. And my problem was immediately taken care of even though it was out of warranty. DO NOT expect that from Ford).
The key will now only go in one way. Flip it over and it won't go in. It's only a matter of time...
2. New brake pads and rotors machined at 17,000 miles. Yeah, you read that mileage correctly. I'm not a "slam on your brakes to stop" kind of guy, and my brakes last a LOOOOOOONG time. They also tell me that I will need NEW rotors the next time I need pads... so new rotors around 34,000 miles!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They (the dealer and Ford "Customer Service") seem to think that this is "okay" and "normal" (!?!?!?).
3. Gas mileage. As long as the car was in, I had them check the gas mileage, and they calculated it at exactly what I had: 17 in the city and 22 on the highway. And they seem to think, again, that that is perfectly normal.
I am the author of posts 460 and 461. since then My fuel pump has failed again. Message 460 turned out the hose connectoer was bad so the hose would slip off. They replaced the whole fuel pump and 7 days later it failed. My wife is terrified she will get stranded. I'm still dealing with the dealer they said they will "Resolve the issue". What this means I have no idea.
As far as low power Focuses I made a point to get a Zetec engine and I have no problems. I think the speed is adequeate. I owned an Escort and the Focus interior blows its doors off. The hieght control on the seat is the best. I still think the Focus is a good car and am hoping they will replace mine with another. Hey, even the best of us have bad days.
Here's a tidbit from an article on MSN Carpoint's site:
----------------------------
Honda Keeps Small Car Crown
While many automakers have been trying for years to unseat Honda's Civic as the top small car in the country, none has yet succeeded.
But the Ford Focus sure is giving it a run for its money this model year.
The Civic, which was redesigned for 2001 to be larger on the inside yet a small car on the outside, racked up sales of more than 218,700 in the first three-quarters of the model year. It's sold as a sedan and a coupe, but a sporty Civic Si is due back in the lineup in the new model year.
The Focus, which is sold as a sedan, station wagon and hatchback, isn't far behind with sales of more than 198,950, and Ford says nearly half of the buyers are age 35 or younger.
Both models are among the top sellers overall for the model year.
------------------------
The full article can be found here (the article itself is about the topselling cars of 2001)...
The dealer has finally said that they'll switch out the igntion without waiting for it to go out again (as it is now, the key will only go in one way even though it's a two-sided key). I'm driving only when I neee to until it's fixed because I DO NOT want to get stuck somewhere.
Fuel economy STILL sucks. Ford says I should be getting 22/32. The dealer and I both calculate my car at 17/22. And they say there's nothing they can do about it.
Also say there's nothing they can do about my brakes, that it's the metallic pads wearing out the rotors...
I purchased my 2001 Focus LX on 9/29/00, and it has given me excellent service for 8500 miles, with one exception: the trunk latch broke and I cannot open my trunk. A part has been ordered and I await its arrival. AS the dealer is a brand new facility and close to my home, I use it for service. Herein lies the problem! Three hours for an oil change. It took the service dept. 9 hours just to look at the trunk, and it is supposed to take about ten days to get the part. The dealer and Ford treat you great, but when you require service...you wait forever! Can anyone out there tell me if Ford is nationally known for poor service?
I now have 1600 miles on my 2001 Focus SE with the Zetec engine and auto trans. I have installed a K&N air filter two weeks ago and am getting 29 MPG in mixed driving with a big improvement on staying power on long inclines. I am very happy with this car. My only complaint is the cup holders. 73 Randy
First off, let me say that I'm glad (or somehow disappointed) that so many other people are getting sub-par gas mileage from the Focus. I am averaging about 23 to 24 miles per gallon. Initially, when I first broke the car in in February, I was getting 32 miles per gallon, before it dropped to a regtrettable 16 to 17 miles per gallon average for the next 4,000 miles or so (to think that Mossy Ford in San Diego said that was normal is beyond me. They said it was the way I drive...yes, I want to drive my four-banger really fast (heavy on the sarcasm). But I digress...
My Ford Focus has about 6,500 miles on it, and the brakes squeak when I apply pressure to them whenever I'm driving faster than 10 miles per hour. Has anyone else had this problem? Is there a home remedy for this problem? I figure Ford can pick this up as part of the warranty agreement (and, you're wrong Edmunds, I've already spent about $500 worth of mechanic time solving quirks and problems with my Focus, proving that everyone needs to buy the extended warranty offered by the manufacturer). Any ideas?
Have you pulled out the air filter and cleaned out the leaves and debris from the air box? I had to do that at 1300 miles. Also check the conections to the fuel injectors and make sure they are tight. Do yourself a favor and buy the K&N air filter and you will notice a difference. Have a nice day, 73 Randy
I have a 2000 focus ZTS automatic. It's got 19k miles and now its engine stalls when I brake it hard to a stop. In the case it does not stall, it noticeably shakes for half a second or so, strugling to keep itself in idle. I've got to take it to a dealer!
Does anybody have this problem with his focus? Who knows what the problem seems to be?
Well the car has worked fine for about four weeks but we have been talking back and forth with the dealer service dept. They have offered us trade-in value of the car +$3,500.00. I have to decide now what to do. You guys think this is fair? Trade in value of a 2000 is about $13,500 but mine is a 2001 (Edmunds doesn't list trade in for 2001).
I think you are dealing with a poor service department.I had on-going problems when I had my 98 Escort. The dealer kept saying there was nothing wrong for five times, so I took it to another Ford dealer and they fixed it right the first time.If you are going to lose too much money on this deal, keep the car and have them throw in the 6/60 ESP Plan and lifetime oil and lube for free if you keep the car.I love my Focus so far.I bought it because I'm 6'2" and I have plenty of room in it. After I get my settlement from my wreck in 1999, I will most likley get a Suv to pull the future boat(dreamer).I wish you the best."Don't sweat the small stuff." Life is too short, as we found out Tuesday.
Hi all, I'm a new focus owner as of today (2001 SE). I've read numerous bad things about rustproofing and undercoating (not worth it). The problem is that I live directly on the beach and am very concerned about undercarriage rust. I have a 95 explorer that is badly rusted underneath - the body itself is fine. It appears that the manufacturers warranty does not cover rust/corrosion caused by "the elements" (salt air). The dealer tells me the the AutoArmor treatment covers rust/corrosion on the undercarriage. Does anyone have any advice on what I should do? Thanks!!
1. Soapy water should be good enough to wash off your wheels if you wash your car frequently. The brakes dust have enough time to adhere to the wheels. If you are like me and wait for a good rain storm to wash your car, then you should invest in a good wheel cleaner. Make sure the cleaner is made for Alumnium wheels. There are plenty of them on the market and they normally run you about $3-$5 for 22 oz. An auto shop, Walmart or KMart should carry them.
2. This brake dust happens to all cars. It's more noticeable on aluminum wheels because the holes allow the brake dust to escape. It's not a noticeable on steel wheels. So when you replace your brake pads, I would be more concerned about pad performance and longevity then how much brake dust it produces.
The key is to wash your tires frequently. Use those self serve car wash sprayers. they work pretty good on tires..if you do it frequently.
I use car wash soap and instead of a regular sponge, I use a bottle washer sponge that has a handle on one end. This makes it very easy to get into those hard to reach places.
As to the brake pads, there are companies that make pads that produce less dust.
Still fine after 2400 miles on my 2001 Focus SE 4dr 16 valve, auto, 25-30 mpg's and still getting better. Lots more "get up and go" with the K&N air filter. It had it's first oil change last week and it was for free! I really like this car, but still looking forward to the Jeep in 2003. I'd keep the Focus if it could tow 3500 lbs. One thing I noticed this evening was at idle, the lights have a subtle flicker. I hope you all have a very nice weekend. 73 Randy
I bought a 2000 focus in 3/2000. It was an SE, 2.0 base engine, 5 speed, with cruise/arm rest/tilt telescoping steering (maybe that was standard). Currently have 19000 miles on the car. Except for the recalls, no other problems. Fuel mileage has been as advertised, if not better. Back when doing a 14 mile daily commute with some stop and go, got around 30 mpg. Now with a 55 mile daily commute (2/3 highway traffic), getting around 35. Heck, this last week didn't run the AC at all and got around 37. Pretty happy with that. Overall I'm quite happy with this car. I guess the acceleration/get up and go with the standard transmission is a good bit better than the automatic (seen a lot of people complaining). I don't have any real complaints with the acceleration(except with a full car and the ac running). I mean, you have to push the car hard to really get it to go, but that's not really part of my everyday driving. I do love how this car handles though. Body roll takes a little to get used to on hard cornering, but once I got used to it, it doesn't bother me.
Where do you guys go to get oil changes? I mean, does Jiffy Lube have 5W-20? I can't even find that in stores. I'm sure the Dealer will do the oil change, but it would be much more convenient if I could find other ways to get it done.
I'm considering buying a 2002 Focus ZTS. I like the styling and performance, great price, and it's very roomy for my 6'4" frame. The only thing giving me pause is the question of reliability. I see a lot of posts here about people having problems - is it that widespread or is it just a case of dissatisfied people posting more than others.
So bottom line, do you like your Focus, yes or no? Would you buy it again, yes or no.
I have a 2000 SE w/ Zetec and automatic trans. So far, I'd do it again. I really do like the car. It handles nicely and gets me back and forth to work. The posts from people with problems do concern me and I am on the lookout for symptoms of the problems they list. It only has about 8000 miles, and it has not been trouble free, just minor stuff and a couple of recalls. I don't think the recalls have been so plentiful on the 2001 models. After reading posts about front brake disk wear problems, I watched mine closely, concluded that they were wearing too fast and installed a set of pads from a local auto parts store. Time will tell if they'll make a difference.

So be patient, it took some time to break the engine in (I was getting around 23-25 mpg early on)... This car has been nothing short of wonderful, and although it doesn't have the pickup of a Vette, once you get moving you can zip in and out of traffic as well as the next guy.
Laters!
Kevin
I just received the K&N air filter for my Focus today. I can't wait to install it and enjoy the benefits. I had one in my '98 Escort and it worked great. The engine gets to breathe much better at higher rpm's and makes passing much better, not that it isn't good now, but it makes a big difference. Next week I will install my amateur radio gear.
73 for now,
Randy
suppose to get. CHECK it out Glad You Love yours I dont hate mine it's just dispointing but I guess I should have known that its a Ford.
what is your problem with your focus? that is my point. you talk of everyone elses problems but what about yours. your trunk is fixed under warranty, If you check out the forums for the new Civic you will hear the same things.

Do you have any proof that ford put cost over saftey in the firestone Fiasco and what does that have to do with the focus?

Randy
Maybe it is the shocks, maybe it is me. I will say that I have been driving the car for almost 8 month now and I still feel guarded each time I get in to go somewhere. This same thing happened once when I bought a 1993 Tuarus. I had it for 14 months before I had to get rid of it. I traded for an Escort and was very happy. I was never able to get comfortable with the Taurus.
When I get a chance I will try the parking lot thing, but I highly doubt that I have this car a year from now. Maybe I just bought the wrong car for me.
Also, are the 16-inch 6-spoke rims on the ZX3 available on a 4-door?
Any input would be greatly appreciated. Oh, and by the way, I have narrowed it down to the Pro and the Focus.
I also have a '93 Ford Escort with a manual transmission and have had no problems with the transmission so I have no idea what you are talking about when it comes to Ford transmissions of the '90s.
have a peek at a QTVR

Edmunds has the prices on the 2002 Focus including the zx5.

I then told the service writer to ask Mr Newman to call me. I told them they needed to address this car as a LEMON. I've had the car in for 8 recalls...whell bearings in April 01 the Car has 29007 miles on it.. and now this happens I think I've had it with the car..
to date we have had:
wheel bearing replaced we have complained every time the car went into the shop.. even for oil changes.
wiring replaced.
4 tires replaced <at MY expense because the dealer said the tires were NOT covered for early wear out ( this was due to the wheel bearings gone bad)
the dealer creased the trunk lid and tried to hide the screwup done by his technition's screwdriver pushing the wiring under the supports and then tried to tell me my wife did it.

Good luck.--Mike
How have others solved this simple, but annoying, problem?
Must the entire plastic/rubber combo surround be replaced?
Finally, would this be covered on the 3/36,000 bumper-to-bumper factory warranty?
My wife loves this 2000 SE, although I think that 17 mpg is pretty bad.
Thanks for any assistance.
In town it's fun, of course, but we're surprised to find it's great on the highway also...my wife
(who originally pouted about not getting an Accord) is now fighting me to do the highway driving...
Big plusses:
1. handling, handling, handling
1a. easy entry/exit
2. quick,cold air
3. speakers, radio
4. comfortable room/seating for 4 adults.
5. bright headlights.
6 tight body
7. quiet enough ride on hwy..

The full article can be found here (the article itself is about the topselling cars of 2001)...

Fuel economy STILL sucks. Ford says I should be getting 22/32. The dealer and I both calculate my car at 17/22. And they say there's nothing they can do about it.
Also say there's nothing they can do about my brakes, that it's the metallic pads wearing out the rotors...

Any ideas?
Thanks
Have a nice day,

Does anybody have this problem with his focus? Who knows what the problem seems to be?
Thanks,

I'm a new focus owner as of today (2001 SE).
I've read numerous bad things about rustproofing and undercoating (not worth it). The problem is that I live directly on the beach and am very concerned about undercarriage rust. I have a 95 explorer that is badly rusted underneath - the body itself is fine.

#1: What is the best way to clean them. Is soapy water good enough, or should I invest in some kind of special cleaner?
#2: When it comes time to replace these brake pads, what can I use that WON'T do this to the wheels?
