So far, so good on the car. no pulls, shimmies, or clunks. The doors make a lot of noise when they open and close, but the racket is at least symmetrical from side to side.
We also got the 7/100/0 Handacare warranty and a StarGard ignition disabler for $1088. I would normally have passed on the StarGard, but the best price I found on the warranty was $950 from Brandon Winfree at Rusty Wallis Honda (214-348-7500), and the $138 additional seemed reasonable. I didn't do an exhaustive search for the warranty, just called the three dealers listed on the Odyssey checklist. I see above a few references to prices in the $8XX range.
Mike Harvey wasn't too bad. We dealt with Ralph Tommasini, their internet manager. They normally sell Odysseys for perhaps $1500+ over MSRP, but I happened to e-mail them at the end of February and they had the vehicle we were looking for unsold and on the way, and apparently wanted to get the sale into February. The same day we signed the contract for ours, a friend bought an EX Nav off the lot at another Bay Area dealership for MSRP + $1500.
Two issues I had with Mike Harvey Honda. First was that we had to sign a contract up front before the car arrived. This was very strange - not a deposit, but actually the contract specifying the VIN. So we really bought it 2/27 although we didn't see it until yesterday. I spoke with a friend who sold Hondas for a number of years, and she was astounded that a dealership would do this. It made us very nervous, and we added specific verbage about delivery dates and acceptance criteria. Forutnately, we didn't have to test the soundness of the verbage. We went ahead with the process because buying one in Ohio and having it shipped, or else buying at Spreen in So. CA (our other plan) and driving it home, both seemed to have their own risks and nuisance factors. The second issue I had with Harvey was that nobody seemed very concerned with the contract but me. If I hadn't noticed that "Powertrain" rather than "New" was checked on the warranty plan type, would I have been stuck down the road? I don't know, but hey, contracts should be correct.
A couple of weeks ago, I sent an e-mail to perhaps 30 dealers within a few hours of Silicon Valley. This was an entirely unscientific test, and I'm sure I missed many dealers. If anybody wants the compiled list, e-mail me at davida@axon.com. The only one selling at MSRP was Vacaville, near Sacramento. They have a list and apparently call people when one arrives. First one to get there wins. Clearly the locals and fast drivers have the edge. I certainly applaud their decision to serve their local customers rather than maximize their short term profits.
Sorry to ramble on so long, but I've found this list and the general Odyssey list to be enormously helpful, and wanted to send in my story in case anybody else can benefit from it.
So now my question is, did I just empower myself out of an extended warranty? While I have seen many references to the $895 price for this warranty, I have never seen an explanation of why you can get for this price and how to make the dealers bend to my informed consumer will. Do I have to get this from the dealer I purchased the van from? I honestly don't ever expect to have to use it given the rep. of Honda's so maybe the standard 3 yr. deal will be fine. But, I'm no mechanic and even with my advanced computer skills would not step foot into the engine of a 2001 vehicle with a Haynes manual. Looking for a little backup here and some info about how to get the ex. warranty after the fact and for the $895 price. Thanks.

from Jay Honda for 300 below MSRP). I had read several posts that said it took them
20 minutes to register their car implying no sweat. When I tried to register mine this AM, the clerk says: California law says if you are a resident of CA and buys a new car from out of state, you are not allowed to register that car unless the car has at least 7500 miles on it! She says this law is to prevent people from buying out of state! (I thought we live in a free market society :-( ).
I would love to get some hints from those of you in the same predicament but have
successfully registered you vans!
By the way, the clerk did ask me: were you a resident of Ohio and just moved here recently because that would be the only time this type of registration is allowed. I gave her the
honest answer: no.
When do I pay the car's sales tax? at the DMV?
I am pondering making appointment with a different DMV office and be more prepared with
better answers.
If you prefer to send me email or have me call you instead of posting here, please write me at: louist@documentum.com.
When I called the DMV, I told them what I was considering and why. I was told no problem, all you have to do is get it "smog tested" ($55). I also asked about the tax and was told you pay the tax where you buy it and then make up the difference if any when you register it here. I don't know what Ohio is, but say it's 5% that you paid there... then you'd pay 2 and a half % here (total of 7.5%)...or prior to Jan., a total of 7 and 3/4%.
You just need to get your smog certificate and try another office. You know what they say about government employees, talk to two & get two different stories! You might not be aware of this, but you can't even call your local CA. DMV of late! If you try, you'll get a disconnected recording. They now have a central phone center in Sacramento with only 250 operators for the entire state, the local numbers don't work anymore. The new number for the entire state is 1-800-777-0133 ...prepare for some "hold" time.
I'd give them a call and get the process from the horse's mouth... and be sure to ask the operator's number. Then call again, get a slightly different story and that operator's number. Pick the story ya' like best, and go down to a new office armed with your information from the central DMV information office in Sacto and quote the specific operator if ya' run into another story in person that ya' don't like.
I remember last Nov. I was in the DMV for another matter, and the guy in front of me was trying to register a new truck he had just bought in Arizona. They told him he had to get it smogged first (which I already knew), he said the dealer never told him... they never do. Any time you bring in a vehicle from out-of-state, it has to be smogged... even if it's brand new (stupid, huh?) and even if you live in an area of CA. that doesn't even require smog tests normally.
Best Regards,
Skybolt
If you are willing to wait, and I mean un to a year, the BUS deal is the best deal going on the Odyssey. The BUS price on an EX is $24351 and the MSRP is $26800. I would say that more than $2K under sticker is not bad. I got on the list in April of 2000, and I should have my AS Odyssey in the next few month. Yea a year is a long time to wait, but I was certainly in no rush, and I can't stand the thought of paying sticker for the EX. Hope this helps.
If you are willing to wait, and I mean up to a year, the UBS deal is the best deal going on the Odyssey. The UBS price on an EX is $24351 and the MSRP is $26800. I would say that more than $2K under sticker is not bad. I got on the list in April of 2000, and I should have my SS Odyssey in the next few month. Yeah a year is a long time to wait, but I was certainly in no rush, and I can't stand the thought of paying sticker for the EX. Hope this helps.
One disadvantage of by phone/mail purchases is that the selling dealer needs to verify the mileage. If you buy within a few days of delivery, when you can fax the papers to the warranty seller, it's no problem. After all, you can't put 30,000 miles on a 4 day old van! But as time and mileage goes buy, the selling dealer will make is harder for you to prove the mileage. I suggest that you solve all and buy it asap.
Thanks.
We recently bought an EX and after reading the earlier messages, located Alton Blakley HOnda in Kentucky to purchase the 7/100//0 warranty. Their price is $875 with no sales tax ( they don't charge it in KY and we don't pay it since we are out of state). The business manager's name is Tracy Dalton at (800) 264-3275 or (606)678-0160.
She sent me a complete packet for the warranty, which I just need to send back to her. I remember something that the timeframe to get the warranty is when the car is less than one year old or has less than 12,000 miles, but don't hold me to it.
Hope this helps.
Maybe we were lucky, but our experience is worth telling. We wanted to test drive an Odyssey and had trouble locating one to test drive. We found one at Babylon Honda and ended up buying it off the lot. It had 50 miles on it.After some negotiating, we paid MSRP, nothing over!!It had an inflated "protection package" on it, but we made up the cost by having our salesman throw in some extra keys ( I hear they are quite expensive). No waiting, yahoo.THe car we got had the navigation system in it, but the way we look at it, I would rather pay the extra money and get a EX-navi than have the money go into the dealer's pocket. We also LOVE the navi now that we have it. Our Salesman was Rich @ (631)669-8800.
We heard that the original person the car was slated for couldn't get financing. It probably pays to check back every couple of days in case this happens again.
do you think????
Bought my '00 Civic there 7+ months ago, and at the time Odyssey's were MSRP+$1000, and the wait list was 30+ names/3-4 months. Should be able to pick up by tax day (less than one month!). Dealt with Dan Steffen at Schlossman's Honda City, via internet www.honda4you.com and phone (414)328-3532. With my car purchase, we were there 90 minutes, with no hassles at all. I'm expecting the same this time around, and will take the checklist with me.
Also asked about warranty, and explained the best deal on this site was $875 for a 7/100/0 HC. They've offered a 6/100 "platinum" warranty for $793. I'm not planning on super high mileage, so I think I'll be calling Tracy Dalton at Alton Blakely in KY. Thanks for all the input, and will write back with the delivery and first drive experiences.
Anyway, my question to you and to other Odyssey owners--any particular accessories that you recommend? We were definitely thinking of the mud guards but any other suggestions (i.e. cargo holder, wind deflector)? Yes, I know from the message board that I can get them thru the internet but I was going to see if I could get the dealer to throw them in. Also, what was this protection package that they tried to add on?
thanks.
I feel like this is the most well researched purchase I have ever made! Thanks to all on the postings board for their information!
You do not have to live in the Washington DC area, but you do have to purchase your car from their network of dealers. Think road trip (I am currently stationed in Toledo, OH).
If you can qualify it seems like a good deal. I was going to purchase an Audi A4 through them at cost +800 (a very good deal for a car in some demand). There is a firm, negiotated price you pay so you have to worry less about problems with the dealer. On the other hand, if there is a very short supply (as in the case of the Odyssey apparently) the dealers are probably selling their available stock for what they can get and ordering for UBS customers.
I did not end up w UBS b/c they do not have a Saab dealer, the car I ended up choosing.
FWIW, good luck.
Any feedback or insights would be most appreciated.
Thanks
Bought mine from ad Mores Honda in North Palm Beach, dealt with the Interned Manager, Tom Clinton, he was extremely professional & knowledgeable, no pressure or salesman bullcrap.
While unable to give me any off of MSRP, Tom did give me a break on a few extra's I wanted ( cassette player, splash guards & air deflector) I highly recommend Tom Clinton & ad Mores Honda in Palm Beach, Buddy Mikell - 2001 Odyssey EX owner
Internet Manager is Tom Clinton (800) 844-0504 ext. # 157
Buddy Mikell
BTW, dealer has offered a price of $24,000 for an LX without options - has anyone done better?
Thanks...
I had to wait for the EX in the color I wanted but felt it was worth the wait. All others wanted full list plus, but Sera Honda really came through for me. They can be found at wow@SerraHonda.com.
md96 mesg 914... looking in the same area. Did you have any luck? Currently working with Classic and Coggin Honda looking for a decent deal on an Ody.

Got a voice from another dealer in Louisville, KY last week wanting to know if I had bought an Odyssey yet said they would honor my request to purchase an Odyssey at $1000 below MSRP.
Some dealers are discounting, you just have to look around. We drove 350 miles from Atlanta to Sommerset, KY to pick up our van after only a 3 week wait for the color we wanted.
Based on my recent purchase experience I think prices for the Odyssey will get MUCH better before the summer is over. I was able to make a below MSRP purchase with NO wait, and with several vans to choose from. Most lots in the Cleveland, and Eastern Ohio area have at least a few vans sitting around waiting to be purchased. I imagine this will spread rather quickly to other areas. Of course this probably won't apply to California but little that is normal does out there anyway.
Jim d.
Perhaps you mis-heard when they quoted $26400. That IS MSRP.
Keep us posted on you Odyssey and how your dealer maintenance works out.
Steve
The salesman's name that left the voice message was Tony and he said that he had a 01 SS EX coming in that no one had pre-purchased.
Hope that helps.
Pricing: $23,900, Destination $440, Keyless $219. Note This is not a Honda Keyless Entry system, but the dealer offered a "lifetime warranty" on the keyless entry and saved me lots of $$ over the Honda brand.
Financing: 6.9% from Chase through my dealer. Was going to use E-Loan, but the dealer found a better rate.
Warranty: I did not purchase this, but they were trying to sell and different brand of extended warranty for $1,450. They were also willing to sell the Honda Care warranty for $850, but I declined both.
Lease: I was offered a 3 year/36K lease on an ODY LX by a different dealer forr $390/month.
The availability on EXs in the South Bend area (90 miles southeast of chicago/120 miles north of Indy) appears pretty good. I saw models on the lots of two local dealers, and they are NOT charging over MSRP. LXs still more difficult to get, but apparently I got lucky. I purchased mine from Gurley Leep Honda in Elkhart, IN from Matt Marlott. His phone number is 219-289-2000.
