Let me know how it works out when you pick up the car. Fluid charge. Thought car would come witth ALL fuilds, sounds a little fishy to me.

We picked up our new white EX yesterday from Mike Harvey Honda in Burlingame, CA (south of San Francisco). We paid MSRP + $500 + $250(Honda cassette) + $45 doc fee. This is actually a good deal for the Bay Area, although I'd say that lostinspace2 did a bit better.

So far, so good on the car. no pulls, shimmies, or clunks. The doors make a lot of noise when they open and close, but the racket is at least symmetrical from side to side.

We also got the 7/100/0 Handacare warranty and a StarGard ignition disabler for $1088. I would normally have passed on the StarGard, but the best price I found on the warranty was $950 from Brandon Winfree at Rusty Wallis Honda (214-348-7500), and the $138 additional seemed reasonable. I didn't do an exhaustive search for the warranty, just called the three dealers listed on the Odyssey checklist. I see above a few references to prices in the $8XX range.

Mike Harvey wasn't too bad. We dealt with Ralph Tommasini, their internet manager. They normally sell Odysseys for perhaps $1500+ over MSRP, but I happened to e-mail them at the end of February and they had the vehicle we were looking for unsold and on the way, and apparently wanted to get the sale into February. The same day we signed the contract for ours, a friend bought an EX Nav off the lot at another Bay Area dealership for MSRP + $1500.

Two issues I had with Mike Harvey Honda. First was that we had to sign a contract up front before the car arrived. This was very strange - not a deposit, but actually the contract specifying the VIN. So we really bought it 2/27 although we didn't see it until yesterday. I spoke with a friend who sold Hondas for a number of years, and she was astounded that a dealership would do this. It made us very nervous, and we added specific verbage about delivery dates and acceptance criteria. Forutnately, we didn't have to test the soundness of the verbage. We went ahead with the process because buying one in Ohio and having it shipped, or else buying at Spreen in So. CA (our other plan) and driving it home, both seemed to have their own risks and nuisance factors. The second issue I had with Harvey was that nobody seemed very concerned with the contract but me. If I hadn't noticed that "Powertrain" rather than "New" was checked on the warranty plan type, would I have been stuck down the road? I don't know, but hey, contracts should be correct.

A couple of weeks ago, I sent an e-mail to perhaps 30 dealers within a few hours of Silicon Valley. This was an entirely unscientific test, and I'm sure I missed many dealers. If anybody wants the compiled list, e-mail me at davida@axon.com. The only one selling at MSRP was Vacaville, near Sacramento. They have a list and apparently call people when one arrives. First one to get there wins. Clearly the locals and fast drivers have the edge. I certainly applaud their decision to serve their local customers rather than maximize their short term profits.

Sorry to ramble on so long, but I've found this list and the general Odyssey list to be enormously helpful, and wanted to send in my story in case anybody else can benefit from it.

Any experiences in Chicago area with trading in a 2000 Odyssey (EX)? What were the offers and ending trade-in value? I had an infuriating experience at Honda of Lisle, but will hold back the deal offered until I see some other experiences first. Thanks.

I've noticed that there are late model used Odysseys for sale in the Bay Area. May be related to the collapse of lots of dot coms and other high-tech layoffs. A couple days ago in the San Jose Mercury News, there were ads for one 2001 and five 2000. A week ago, it was two each 2000 and 2001. Prices don't look great, but availabilty is improving.

I have also been lurking on this list for several months now and found it to be very empowering when we finally plunked down MSRP + $1200 for our Emerald Green EX from Honda of Hayward (SF Bay Area). We love the van and the dealer (Joseph and Teddy) was great but now I'm thinking I was a bit too empowered when it came to purchasing the extended warranty. I have been seeing the references to $895 - $875 for this warranty all over this list and that's the price I asked for when it came time to talk with the finance guy. He was willing to come down to about $1700 but no less for the Ody. My impression from this list was that I could buy this warranty after the fact if I preferred and from any Honda dealer as long as it was within the first 30 days of my purchase (not completely sure about this part). Anyway, for lack of haggling skills I just told the dude no at that price and that I knew it could be had for the $895.

So now my question is, did I just empower myself out of an extended warranty? While I have seen many references to the $895 price for this warranty, I have never seen an explanation of why you can get for this price and how to make the dealers bend to my informed consumer will. Do I have to get this from the dealer I purchased the van from? I honestly don't ever expect to have to use it given the rep. of Honda's so maybe the standard 3 yr. deal will be fine. But, I'm no mechanic and even with my advanced computer skills would not step foot into the engine of a 2001 vehicle with a Haynes manual. Looking for a little backup here and some info about how to get the ex. warranty after the fact and for the $895 price. Thanks.

I got the Honda Care for my 2000 in May 2000 for $1,260 after some dealing. I had already pounded the finance mgr for a very competitive interest rate, so I may not have worked this one as hard. I am certain I would not have gotten anything in the $800-$900 range. I bought my Odyssey in the Chgo area.

I have two dealers with Silver LXs on their lots ready to sell. I've tried playing one against the other by hinting that why should I use you when the guy down the street has the same deal and came to me first..it would be nice to just get a couple hundred off MSRP, just to do it...is it worth risking losing the van, no, but I think we will start to see some of the supply dropping off and prices coming down a little..plus I have six weeks to play with before baby #2 arrives...

I live in Northern VA, and the UBS dealer to whom I was referred agreed to sell me an '01 EX at the UBS price (about $600 under MSRP), but he stated flat out that delivery would be 6 to 9 months, and this was in October 2000! Conclusion--forget UBS unless waiting is no big deal. The vehicle is in such demand that MSRP or very close to it is the rule of the day.
  • acsmithacsmith Member Posts: 63
I bought my 01 EX from Janis Pohanka of Pohanka H. of Fredericksburg. That's a short hop down 95 from Quantico. MSRP, $149 "doc fee" no extras unless I wanted them, and then she was up front--all extras are MSRP. This was far better thant any of the dealers in VA, like Tysons Corner, etc. You can mention my name if you want. Art Smith.

Does anyone know if the LX for 2001 has a manual height adjustment for the driver's seat? If so, what is the the range of upward adjustment? My wife is 5 ft. She drove the EX with power height adjustment; it was fine. But we are not going to buy the EX. All information (and its source) is greatly appreciated.

I would like to hear from those living in California that bought their vans out-of-state(got mine
from Jay Honda for 300 below MSRP). I had read several posts that said it took them
20 minutes to register their car implying no sweat. When I tried to register mine this AM, the clerk says: California law says if you are a resident of CA and buys a new car from out of state, you are not allowed to register that car unless the car has at least 7500 miles on it! She says this law is to prevent people from buying out of state! (I thought we live in a free market society :-( ).

I would love to get some hints from those of you in the same predicament but have
    successfully registered you vans!

By the way, the clerk did ask me: were you a resident of Ohio and just moved here recently because that would be the only time this type of registration is allowed. I gave her the
    honest answer: no.

When do I pay the car's sales tax? at the DMV?

I am pondering making appointment with a different DMV office and be more prepared with
    better answers.
If you prefer to send me email or have me call you instead of posting here, please write me at: louist@documentum.com.

Just received my contract from Honda (CA) for my 00 EX. Price paid $755, when two contracts were purchased at the same time. Would have been $805 if bought alone. My dealer is Bob Lindsay Honda of Peoria.

I also bought from Jay Honda. It literally took 20 minutes to register at my local dmv office. Only glitch, I didn't have a california smog test certification when I went in, so I had to get the van smogged, and then took the paperwork back to the dmv. I think you must have run into a confused dmv employee. Try a different office.

I was considering buying from an Autobytel dealer in Henderson, NV., but ended up going with Jesse Gamez at Unicars Honda in Palm Desert because Jesse beat the Autobytel dealers price. Any way, when I was thinking I might be buying out of state, I called the local CA. DMV office in advance to see if any hassles involved. I remembered the law that you were quoted being passed in the late '80s I believe. I think that was done primarily for Motorhomes because so many were buying here and taking delivery in Yuma and places just across the border to beat sales tax.

When I called the DMV, I told them what I was considering and why. I was told no problem, all you have to do is get it "smog tested" ($55). I also asked about the tax and was told you pay the tax where you buy it and then make up the difference if any when you register it here. I don't know what Ohio is, but say it's 5% that you paid there... then you'd pay 2 and a half % here (total of 7.5%)...or prior to Jan., a total of 7 and 3/4%.

You just need to get your smog certificate and try another office. You know what they say about government employees, talk to two & get two different stories! You might not be aware of this, but you can't even call your local CA. DMV of late! If you try, you'll get a disconnected recording. They now have a central phone center in Sacramento with only 250 operators for the entire state, the local numbers don't work anymore. The new number for the entire state is 1-800-777-0133 ...prepare for some "hold" time.

I'd give them a call and get the process from the horse's mouth... and be sure to ask the operator's number. Then call again, get a slightly different story and that operator's number. Pick the story ya' like best, and go down to a new office armed with your information from the central DMV information office in Sacto and quote the specific operator if ya' run into another story in person that ya' don't like.

I remember last Nov. I was in the DMV for another matter, and the guy in front of me was trying to register a new truck he had just bought in Arizona. They told him he had to get it smogged first (which I already knew), he said the dealer never told him... they never do. Any time you bring in a vehicle from out-of-state, it has to be smogged... even if it's brand new (stupid, huh?) and even if you live in an area of CA. that doesn't even require smog tests normally.

    Best Regards,
    Skybolt

    To all,

If you are willing to wait, and I mean un to a year, the BUS deal is the best deal going on the Odyssey. The BUS price on an EX is $24351 and the MSRP is $26800. I would say that more than $2K under sticker is not bad. I got on the list in April of 2000, and I should have my AS Odyssey in the next few month. Yea a year is a long time to wait, but I was certainly in no rush, and I can't stand the thought of paying sticker for the EX. Hope this helps.

you can buy the extended warr after delivery. The cost goes up slightly as you approach 36,000 miles, and at 36,000, you're dead in the water. I suggest you contact dealers mentioned on this thread, etc. I purchased the 7/100/0 for $925 from Janis Pohanka of Pohanka H. of Fredericksburg, VA. She wanted $1250 (in January 2001) but when I showed her the list of dealers who will sell by phone/mail, she took the list to her manager. I made it clear that I WILL BUY the warranty from her if the price is right. Otherwilse I WILL BUY the warranty elsewhere. She came back with $925, and I said "sold" in one second flat.

One disadvantage of by phone/mail purchases is that the selling dealer needs to verify the mileage. If you buy within a few days of delivery, when you can fax the papers to the warranty seller, it's no problem. After all, you can't put 30,000 miles on a 4 day old van! But as time and mileage goes buy, the selling dealer will make is harder for you to prove the mileage. I suggest that you solve all and buy it asap.

I've read a few posts lately regarding UBS or BUS deals on the Odyssey and getting it for about 2k less than sticker price. However, a long wait would be required. Could someone explain to me the details of this, because I can wait this amount of time for a good deal.

    Thanks.

    Opiesan,

We recently bought an EX and after reading the earlier messages, located Alton Blakley HOnda in Kentucky to purchase the 7/100//0 warranty. Their price is $875 with no sales tax ( they don't charge it in KY and we don't pay it since we are out of state). The business manager's name is Tracy Dalton at (800) 264-3275 or (606)678-0160.
She sent me a complete packet for the warranty, which I just need to send back to her. I remember something that the timeframe to get the warranty is when the car is less than one year old or has less than 12,000 miles, but don't hold me to it.

    Hope this helps.

Maybe we were lucky, but our experience is worth telling. We wanted to test drive an Odyssey and had trouble locating one to test drive. We found one at Babylon Honda and ended up buying it off the lot. It had 50 miles on it.After some negotiating, we paid MSRP, nothing over!!It had an inflated "protection package" on it, but we made up the cost by having our salesman throw in some extra keys ( I hear they are quite expensive). No waiting, yahoo.THe car we got had the navigation system in it, but the way we look at it, I would rather pay the extra money and get a EX-navi than have the money go into the dealer's pocket. We also LOVE the navi now that we have it. Our Salesman was Rich @ (631)669-8800.
We heard that the original person the car was slated for couldn't get financing. It probably pays to check back every couple of days in case this happens again.

Just purchased a 2000 LX, Canyon Stone Silver, with 5300 miles on it!! It was a trade-in for a EX the dealer had just received. Local owner had taken great care of it and rarely drove it! Paid 22,000 minus tax, title, doc fee. What
    do you think????

I've been shopping for our new mini van calling all the Honda dealerships around us. All of them are selling for MSRP--and I've let them all know that we have been in contact with all the other dealerships(about 5 in total). The thing that surprises me is that knowing that, not one of them has offered us ANY incentives to purchase through them. Well except one dealer who offered lifetime oil changes--but another dealer told us to watch out for that because they give you the oil change when it's indicated on the service record but they then charge you for other things listed to be serviced. So no matter what you are still paying money. I'd be happy with some free mud flaps and etc thrown into the deal. I can't believe there doesn't seem to be any competitiveness to sell these!
  • pdiamondpdiamond Member Posts: 4
I've been reading here for months, ever since we decided the Odyssey was the best choice for our family of four. Ordered the SS LX yesterday from Dealership in suburban Milwaukee for MSRP and $400 off options of MY choice (Keyless, CD and Mudguards, Dealer also threw in Cargo Tray).
Bought my '00 Civic there 7+ months ago, and at the time Odyssey's were MSRP+$1000, and the wait list was 30+ names/3-4 months. Should be able to pick up by tax day (less than one month!). Dealt with Dan Steffen at Schlossman's Honda City, via internet www.honda4you.com and phone (414)328-3532. With my car purchase, we were there 90 minutes, with no hassles at all. I'm expecting the same this time around, and will take the checklist with me.
Also asked about warranty, and explained the best deal on this site was $875 for a 7/100/0 HC. They've offered a 6/100 "platinum" warranty for $793. I'm not planning on super high mileage, so I think I'll be calling Tracy Dalton at Alton Blakely in KY. Thanks for all the input, and will write back with the delivery and first drive experiences.

I also am getting my Odyssey EX from Babylon Honda. However, we placed an order for the LX at the beginning of Dec. with a 5 mos wait. We changed the order to an EX at the beginning of Jan. and were still told an approx. 5 mos. wait. Spoke with our salesperson this week and looks like it's scheduled for April. However, it still amazes me that it sounds like at least once a month a customer's financing falls through and they just happen to have one available. (We were told this when we first were shopping around. Those cars were always over sticker.) Is this true all over?

Anyway, my question to you and to other Odyssey owners--any particular accessories that you recommend? We were definitely thinking of the mud guards but any other suggestions (i.e. cargo holder, wind deflector)? Yes, I know from the message board that I can get them thru the internet but I was going to see if I could get the dealer to throw them in. Also, what was this protection package that they tried to add on?

    thanks.
  • mommymobilemommymobile Member Posts: 3
Our car was originally marked $2000 over sticker since it was on the lot. Our salesman immediately said he could work with us on that figure and offered it for $400 over. After sitting inside the showroom Doge minivan, he offered us MSRP. We took it. As for accessories,I think the cargo tray is important to catch the dirt that falls from the stroller, beach bag, etc. and the leaks from the takeout food. The protection package included the mud flaps, wheel locks and cargo tray. There aren't that many accessories to choose from. We plan on installing an after market entertainment system. I found Automotive After marketing who installs for Huntington and Levittown Honda.Their number is (631)331-4429. Their price was $1295 for a 6.8 inch screen. I think Babylon was around $1900 for a 5 inch screen. Let me know how things turn out.
  • vanshopper5vanshopper5 Member Posts: 10
Thanks for the information. Will keep you posted next month. Did you go for an extended warranty? We were thinking of it but probably will not go for it. What was the price for the protection package?

I feel like this is the most well researched purchase I have ever made! Thanks to all on the postings board for their information!

United Buying Service is a service through professional organizations and credit unions for their members. Do a web search to find thier site.

You do not have to live in the Washington DC area, but you do have to purchase your car from their network of dealers. Think road trip (I am currently stationed in Toledo, OH).

If you can qualify it seems like a good deal. I was going to purchase an Audi A4 through them at cost +800 (a very good deal for a car in some demand). There is a firm, negiotated price you pay so you have to worry less about problems with the dealer. On the other hand, if there is a very short supply (as in the case of the Odyssey apparently) the dealers are probably selling their available stock for what they can get and ordering for UBS customers.

I did not end up w UBS b/c they do not have a Saab dealer, the car I ended up choosing.

    FWIW, good luck.

After test driving the Mazda MPV, Toyota Sienna, Ford Windstar and the Honda Odyssey... my husband and I have decided that the Ody EX is the one. There is a dealer in my area with a Silver Ody in stock. The price is $1000 over MSRP but the van has a few things added to it... cassette player, floor mats, cross bars, cargo bin and air deflector. We are really tempted to go for it. Odys are selling at MSRP (if not higher) in my area and there is usually a waiting list of three to four months. So, this seems like a decent opportunity. But I can't help but feel as though we are somehow being taken.

Any feedback or insights would be most appreciated.

    Thanks
  • gessgess Member Posts: 90
I would ask them how much they charge for floor mats. Then have them deduct that much from their price because the mats are included as standard equipment on new Odysseys. If they did that, I may be tempted to go for it under the circumstances.

We've looked at--and liked--the Dodge Grand Caravan and just test drove a Honda Ody today. We're sold on the quality and safety features. The dealer has an Ody with leather and it will cost 30,200+ tax, title, etc. That price includes $698 for Rust Proof Package, $373 for roof bars, $581 for 6-disk changer; $74 for cargo tray; $149 for cargo cover and $1550 for leather. Any comments on this price in the Chicago area are appreciated.

Just picked up my Emerald EX yesterday. Compared it with Toyota Siena & Chyrsler LEI, Honda is better quality built. Paid $26,840 + dealer fee, about the going rate in South Florida( one Dealer quoted $1,500 over MSRP - no thanks)
Bought mine from ad Mores Honda in North Palm Beach, dealt with the Interned Manager, Tom Clinton, he was extremely professional & knowledgeable, no pressure or salesman bullcrap.

While unable to give me any off of MSRP, Tom did give me a break on a few extra's I wanted ( cassette player, splash guards & air deflector) I highly recommend Tom Clinton & ad Mores Honda in Palm Beach, Buddy Mikell - 2001 Odyssey EX owner

Dealers are offering a keyless entry option for $495 (MSRP) on the Ody LX. Not yet to hard negotiations but am considering aftermarket. Anyone had any experiences? What kind of price can I get it for aftermrkt and how easy or difficult is it to install?
BTW, dealer has offered a price of $24,000 for an LX without options - has anyone done better?
    Thanks...

Shopped for several weeks locally and on the web. Best deal on a new Odyssey came from Mark East at Sera Honda in Sylacauga, Alabama. I ordered several options but prices were cost plus $2,000.
I had to wait for the EX in the color I wanted but felt it was worth the wait. All others wanted full list plus, but Sera Honda really came through for me. They can be found at wow@SerraHonda.com.

We have been shopping for a 2001 Odyssey EX. I was working with Jason at Sheehy Honda in Alexandria VA. I wanted to pay MSRP with no appearance package and no options other than a cassette player. He and his manager, Dale Black, agreed to $26,400 (MSRP). The next day, Jason called to say that our Odyssey was here and could we pick it up that day. After we arrived there and had test-driven "our" vehicle, the contract was written for $27,100. Mr. Black denied that he had ever agreed to $26,400. We were so angry that we walked out. I would advise everyone in the Washington DC area to STAY AWAY FROM SHEEHY HONDA!

Got the Honda Keyless Entry installed for $295.00, which is more than a non-Honda system but better than the price you posted. I wanted the genuine Honda accessory, so it would be covered under my warranty. The basic setup can be bought online for under $200, and I felt it was worth about $100 to have them do the installation.

Picked up our GG LX yesterday from Billy Craft Honda in Lynchburg, Va. Had a 6-week wait, paid $25259.52, only options were cargo tray and mudflaps. The Alpine 6-disk changer that they want $549 for, I'm having installed two miles up the road by a shop that the salesman referred me to for $300. A very good experience overall. Our salesman is named Ricky Hamlett. He was extremely helpful and easy to work with.

Puchased my 2001 EX on Jan. 13 from Alton Blakey in Sommerset, KY for $25,840 included dest. fee, 0 doc fee with mud guards added at no cost. Had the van for a couple of months now with zero problems.

Got a voice from another dealer in Louisville, KY last week wanting to know if I had bought an Odyssey yet said they would honor my request to purchase an Odyssey at $1000 below MSRP.

Some dealers are discounting, you just have to look around. We drove 350 miles from Atlanta to Sommerset, KY to pick up our van after only a 3 week wait for the color we wanted.

    Everyone,
Based on my recent purchase experience I think prices for the Odyssey will get MUCH better before the summer is over. I was able to make a below MSRP purchase with NO wait, and with several vans to choose from. Most lots in the Cleveland, and Eastern Ohio area have at least a few vans sitting around waiting to be purchased. I imagine this will spread rather quickly to other areas. Of course this probably won't apply to California but little that is normal does out there anyway.

The SS LX that I ordered at MSRP will have dealer installed Keyless Entry for $248. This is the best price I have seen, and since its Dealer installed, it's covered by warranty. Also got single CD for $322. So the LX with the options I wanted will be $300 below MSRP, and only a 4-week wait. This is in suburban Milwaukee, and I mentioned the dealer in post #1026. Happy hunting.

I had gotten information from you about a month ago regarding Alton Blakey but they were only offering $500 off which we're not sure we'll drive from St. Louis for that. Do you mind telling me the dealer in Louiville that was going to give you $1000 off? Thanks again for your help.

It seems the Odyssey is getting discounted pretty much only in the Ohio-Kentucky area, and really nowhere else. The rest of the country is doing okay at MSRP.

I suggest you check the prices: 26,400 is MSRP for the van. You have to add the $400+ for shipping (the dealer pays that to Honda). The cassette deck MSRP is about $275 insgtalled, so you're up to about $27,100. I bought my 01 EX (delivered 1/31/01) and paid MSRP, plus freight and the options I wanted and the cassette was $275. Seems to me that their price is right on the money. And for the record, I have no connection whatever with any dealers (I work for the feds in Washington, DC).

Perhaps you mis-heard when they quoted $26400. That IS MSRP.

From a post on the board, someone said that Hillside Honda was selling at MSRP (Thanks sz1). We went down on the March 3rd and ordered our LX. We were told that there was a 3 month wait (we were hoping for 6 weeks so we could hand in our lease) but guess what, we're picking it up tomorrow. That is 17 days from deposit to pickup. They didn't like the idea of eloan (would accept it but they said we would have to wait about 2 weeks for check to clear) but they gave us a comparable rate and we financed through them. We didn't order any accessories and we weren't pressured to do so. They offered the 7/70 Hondacare for $1300 and offered to make it 7/100 for the same price. We plan to purchase this from one of the mentioned dealers.

I am glad you were able to get your Odyssey at MSRP and not have to wait so long for it. I plan on waiting until the 2002's are out and will go to Hillside honda as well. Did they treat you well or were the salespeople rude. I have been to paragon Honda in LIC and it took 30 minutes before someone would talk to me.

Keep us posted on you Odyssey and how your dealer maintenance works out.

gjk_stl, I deleted the voice mail but I think it might have been the Sam Swope dealership in Louisville. They had offered to sell me an EX Odyssey at $750 below invoice when I was looking in Dec and I was ready to buy from them until Alton Blakley offered $1000 below invoice and Blakley was about 150 miles closer to Atlanta.

The salesman's name that left the voice message was Tony and he said that he had a 01 SS EX coming in that no one had pre-purchased.

    Hope that helps.

Just picked up our Silver Ody LX this past weekend. I hadn't fully decided to go ahead with a purchase, but a local dealer whom I had visited called to say that one came in that was still "not spoken for".

Pricing: $23,900, Destination $440, Keyless $219. Note This is not a Honda Keyless Entry system, but the dealer offered a "lifetime warranty" on the keyless entry and saved me lots of $$ over the Honda brand.
Financing: 6.9% from Chase through my dealer. Was going to use E-Loan, but the dealer found a better rate.
Warranty: I did not purchase this, but they were trying to sell and different brand of extended warranty for $1,450. They were also willing to sell the Honda Care warranty for $850, but I declined both.
Lease: I was offered a 3 year/36K lease on an ODY LX by a different dealer forr $390/month.

The availability on EXs in the South Bend area (90 miles southeast of chicago/120 miles north of Indy) appears pretty good. I saw models on the lots of two local dealers, and they are NOT charging over MSRP. LXs still more difficult to get, but apparently I got lucky. I purchased mine from Gurley Leep Honda in Elkhart, IN from Matt Marlott. His phone number is 219-289-2000.
