Both. I sent an email looking for a van; they sent me a quote, which was a very good first offer; a few weeks later I countered (on the EX-L) and they accepted. Smoooth deal. Except my DVD screen doesn't wan to come one..taking it in to the local dealer for look.

I'm looking to purchase a 2009 EX-L and I would like to hear from the DFW buyers. Anyone recently purchased a 2009 in the DFW area and care to share their experience?

Has anyone negotiated an OTD price over email/internet and took in a trade-in? How does that work? I know you are "supposed" to negotiate vehicle price seperately than trade-in, but dealers always try to finagle them both. I've got an OTD price from the dealerships, and I have an est from Carmax - but, the dealers do not know I have a trade-in. Do I tell them, or just show up with it and go from there?

what dealership? The best offer i got in MD (6% tax) was $29,250 OTD w/o res or nav.
I live in MD but go to Long Island regularly.

    Thanks

Some of the "experts" will tell you to conceal the fact that you have a trade in and I think that's laughable.

Your trade is worth whatever it is worth. Springing it after the deal is done accomplishes nothing. Just causes more work for the salesperson.

Besides, we can usually smell a "hidden trade".

I've done it. Once I landed on a good price for the Ody I wanted, I told the guy to get me a quote on my trade in. I told him I didn't want to go to the dealership, just have him come by my house and drop off my new car to pick up the trade. He gave me a range at first, and I told him to give me a firm price. He did. I ended up at the dealership and negotiated another $400 out of the trade before signing the deal. He did come to my house to drop off the new car and pick up my trade in. I have 3 kids and I don't like to sit around at a dealership.

The dealer gave me 2K higher than what Car Max offered me. I've found Car Max to be a waste of time. I've taken 3 cars there over the years, all very clean low mile models 5 yrs or less, and they are 10-20% lower than what I've gotten on trade. I'm a savvy negotiator and know how to bottom line price on a new car and also trade, so it wasn't a case of them inflating the price of the new car to justify a higher trade in allowance. I see these posts about them paying top dollar, and maybe they do except for my vehicles!! It doesn't hurt to get an opinion. I bought an 07 Touring in Dec of 07, traded in an 03 Ody EXL w DVD. I've been monitoring this board ever since, it's a great place for information. Good luck!

I did this just yesterday. I simply told them I had a car I was trying to sell privately but if unsuccessful would consider trading it. They gave me their internet price and then simply tacked the trade-in value onto it after I went into the dealership. They will probably low-ball your trade in if you do this but you are still liable to end up with a good deal. I was offered 300 below invoice on any EX-L model but about 1k less than I would have liked on my trade. (I haven't bought yet but am getting close to pulling the trigger).

09 EX-L w/ RES and NAV in Chicago area, DuPage IL

I emailed 6 dealers in my area before the end of the month in January, hoping for some end of the month deals. I got 1 'call me back' reply, 1 'unbeliveable' price of $29715+TTL reply, and 3 reasonable quotes which were about $200 within each other, and 1 dealer did not respond. So I just dealt with the 3 that responded with reasonable quotes. I emailed them back to make sure they did have the exact type of Odyssey I wanted.

I was expecting the quotes to be above invoice (before the $1250 cash rebate), but they were $400 - $500 below. But at least now i had a starting point to deal. I gave one dealer a low ball offer of $31250+TTL but he thought that was crazy and told me to make a better offer. At this point, it occurred to me to look at the old posts in this forum from Jan '08 and Feb '08. What I discovered is that Honda increased their cash rebate on '08 Odyssey from $1000 in Jan '08 to $2000 in Feb '08. So since I was in no hurry to buy, I decided to take a gamble and wait for the Feb '09 incentives. Sure enough, Honda increased their incentive to $2250. I got emails from the dealers with their new quotes. I replied with a "I'll buy it today for $33750 OTD price". That price is $881 below invoice (before incentives). One dealer came back with $33874 and said that the van had splash guards and I would have to pay $130 for them. Another dealer said okay to my offer and the deal was done.

Beforehand, I applied for a loan at Capitiol One and got a 5.3% rate (after .1% Costco discount), and I took that in to the dealer. I was thinking AHFC would match or beat, but they couldn't. They tried their local bank connections and no one could beat it. I think that is why the visit to the dealer took longer than expected. But in the end I was happy.

    Here's the break down:
    $33,258 selling price
    -$2250 cash incentive
    +$2742 TTL
    ======
    $33,750 OTD

Thanks to all to post here, these forums are an essential tool in the car buying process.

That's really good news to hear. I thought maybe Honda would give me a better deal on the trade-in since it is an 06 Ody. It does need new PAX tires and the miles are a little higher than average. Does Honda offer anything for customer loyalty?

We are just at a crossroad with what to do. Either de-pax or do the trade if we can get a good amt on the trade (we already have the OTD price from a dealership via internet). I think the next step is have a meeting with the dealership and see what they'd do with the trade-in. We don't have to buy a car, but if they make it worth it, we'll do it.
  • caulrichcaulrich Member Posts: 2
Honda City in Levittown. It was a struggle to push them down to that price. Tax rate here is 8.625%, so OTD was $34,443,.88.

Huntington Honda offered the next best price, $98 more, with no haggling (direct internet price via edmunds.com)..

    Best of luck to you.

    Hi Neighbor,

Could you please share the Dealer Name including the qutoe of 29715?
Did you contact them at all, or assume it was a bait and switch.

I've spoke to Valley and Honda of Lisle and get my current honda serviced at both.

    Thanks,

    Naperville.

Honda on Grand in Elmhurst. I did not contact them because I assumed it was a bait and switch or some other ploy.

Honda of Lisle is where I bought my Ody.
  • tonyl1tonyl1 Member Posts: 53
Thanks for the info. Honda on Grand is close to work, but the other H of L and Valley are close to home. I need to get something before baby number 4 comes...We ran out of seats in our Jeep :surprise: .

I'm in Ohio and just bought my 2009 Honda Odyssey yesterday. I got the EX-L with RES (Rear Entertainment System), NO Nav for $29425 or $31487 with tax, title (OTD). I hope this helps.
  • LvMyOdyLvMyOdy Member Posts: 6
We negotiated the price of the van down from the sticker of 35,325 to 29,425. We received 2000 dollars for a trade in and with TT our out the door price was 29,607 with 3.9% financing from a local credit union. I hope this helps all that are trying to work a deal for their new Honda Odyssey. I hope we got the best deal we could, we did research, but with twin babies, we didn't want to hit up a bunch of dealerships! Let me know if you have any questions.
  • LvMyOdyLvMyOdy Member Posts: 6
Did you get an 2008 or 2009? I just bought my Ody yesterday, and there were no incentives?? Do you think this varies from state to state?
  • ritesh6ritesh6 Member Posts: 3
I got a 2009. The $2250 is marketing support money from Honda to dealer. It's up to the dealer to pass any of it on to the customer. From what I've read on these forums, incentives may vary by region.
  • deal_me_indeal_me_in Member Posts: 15
It may not have been spelled out but you definitely got the $2,250 in your net price of $29,425. The dealer invoice is $32,151 with destination so it would be very difficult to get to your net price without the dealer cash.

    Hi Guys

Is 32k OTD a good price for a EX-L with DVD in CA?

Has any one bought it recently?

    Thanks
  • mplshondadlrmplshondadlr Member Posts: 409
I would say with 8% sales tax and another 350 in plate fee (aprox) your purchase price is in the mid 29K which is pretty good.
  • HOdysyhunterHOdysyhunter Member Posts: 38
    Hi,

I got an offer on 2005 Odyssey exl+dvd for 19K . There are 22K miles on that car.

Is that a deal? If not, how I can offer? (The KBB retail price shows 20K, private party shows 17.5k)

    Thanks,
  • mason2009mason2009 Member Posts: 7
i was quoted an even $35K for a 2009 Honda Odyssey Touring (non-PAX) model WITH the following accessories installed:

running boards, cross bars, 3rd row sunshades and cargo tray ($1450 approx price)

i've been getting quotes over $35K for the Touring model alone (does NOT include the accessories), so i'm thinking the deal is pretty good.

    suggestions?
  • SUPERBOAT21SUPERBOAT21 Member Posts: 5
Seems like a good deal to me.

I bought a 09 touring w/out pax a month ago and paid 36.9K, plus destination.

Just make sure it's not a bait and switch.

What part of the country are you in?

    Best of luck!

    Hi All,

I am planning to buy an Odyssey 2007 which has 16K miles. It is a certified pre-owned vihicle. The asking price is 19K. The warrranty, sice it is certified, goes till 48K miles/4years calculated from Jan'07. Is that a good deal?

The dealer is also offering a wrap up warranty from Honda Care that would extend the Warranty till 100K miles/7years calculated from Jan07 to match the power train warranty. The price for the warrany ia 900. Is it woth it?
  • deal_me_indeal_me_in Member Posts: 15
    What trim level is the 2007 Ody? LX, EX, EX-L, EX-L w/RES, EX-L w/RES & Nav...?
  • frechettegirlfrechettegirl Member Posts: 13
So today i got additional prices using the costco auto plan.

for the ody EX-L with nav and Rear Ent.. the total was 32,663.00 OTD
34,204.82 (6% sales tax in Michigan)

My other quote for the EXL without nav or rear ent was
    28,630.00 OTD 30,565.00 (6% Michigan tax)

What do you think about these prices? How do you negotiate a price?
I did tell the dealer that i though i've seen it for 29,500 OTD but he said he would have to see paper work on that because that is way too low. Is the price he offered good? Please give me advice the salesmen always scare me..
  • tonyl1tonyl1 Member Posts: 53
Just clarifying, you say, the following but OTD (Out the Door) mean including Tax Title Lic. ie) what you would write a check for to get out the door. So do you mean your price is 34,204 OTD? If so, you can do better.

for the ody EX-L with nav and Rear Ent.. the total was 32,663.00 OTD
34,204.82 (6% sales tax in Michigan)
  • deal_me_indeal_me_in Member Posts: 15
I agree you can do better. I would say at least $1,000. In this economy you should be able to get an Odyssey for no more than dealer invoice less $2,250 factory to dealer cashback. The dealer invoice on an EX-L w/ Nave and Rear Ent. is $34,139 including destination. If you back out $2,250 you get to a price before tax, title... of $31,889. The dealer would still have 2% of MSRP (holdback) of profit in that number plus doc fees.

I requested quotes from three area dealers through the dealer websites. The internet quotes were all very competitive and were all below dealer invoice.
  • HOdysyhunterHOdysyhunter Member Posts: 38
Does anyone know if there are any known issues with 2005 Odyssey EXL(DVD) and being fixed in later releases (>2005).

    Your inputs are really appreciated.

    Thanks,
  • tonyl1tonyl1 Member Posts: 53
For example, I have an offer for 30,975 incl. dest for an EXL R/N.
  • deal_me_indeal_me_in Member Posts: 15
Agreed. I have a quote for an EX-L w/RES but without Navigation of $28,898 which is $1,003 under dealer invoice less cashback of $2,250. $32,151 (invoice) - $2,250 = $29,901. Quote of $28,898 is $1,003 less than dealer invoice less cashback. However doc fees in GA are $399 which is higher than the quote that the original poster had.

So you can do $1K better at a minimum and possibly $1,800 or so.
  • frechettegirlfrechettegirl Member Posts: 13
yes the OTD price including tax plates etc. for the EXL 2009 with nav and rear was 34,204 and the OTD price for the EXL- without the nav and rear was 30, 565.00 OTD. Ok so, how do i go about trying to lower the cost.. i'm telling you i get scared around the salesmen... So i was right when i told him that i read 29,500.00 was what others were getting it for OTD.. that would be an extra 1000.00 right there. He seemed mad and said he needed to see papers for that.
  • LvMyOdyLvMyOdy Member Posts: 6
If someone got the price of 29,500 OTD for a 2009 EX-L with RES, I think that is really low (and I would be jealous). I had originally posted that we got ours for 29,600 OTD but we had 2k from a trade.

As far as dealing with the salesmen, don't be intimidated. When me and my husband went, I did all the negotiating and I just told them that I felt comfortable that I could get it for the price I offered them elsewhere if they didn't want to give it to me. I offered them 29,500, after going back and forth a couple of times. I didn't want to give them more than 29k, but my husband wanted to given in a little and told them we would do 500 more. I don't think we got a steal by any stretch, but I think 29,500 was very fair. Let me know if this helps...

Got quote for 2009 Honda Odyssey LX for $21,589 (which include destination and dealer precessing fee), is it a good price?

    Yes :)

Price out a used one right now.

First of all, tell yourself your the customer, he is not doing you a favor, he is doing his job. I'd suggest narrow your dealers via email or phone. Get the salesman/saleswoman's name. If you don't like the vibe, don't ask for him/her. If you don't like the deal so elsewhere.

Oh yeah, you could print some of these prices listed here, but I'm sure he knows what these vans are going for...I'd also recomend www.odyclub.com.
    Best of luck to you.

Hi all, I've been reading the past few month's posts and my head's swimming. Might I ask a little advice. I'm in the Wash DC area and looking for an EX. I don't want the leather, sunroof or RES. I'm going aftermarket for an Eclipse AVN in-dash Nav and Backup camera system for about $2000. I figure that I'm still saving about $4000 net over the EX-L RES NAV. I have assumed that the 2008s are all gone.

I've received first offer e-mail quotes that seem good. Here's an example:
2009 Odyssey EX is $23,800.00 plus destination charge $670, processing fee $89, tax, and tags.

What I don't understand is that's less than invoice of $26,601 less $2,250 rebate (which would be $24,351). So what's up? Are there more rebates that I'm missing? Are we now into holdback territory? If I understand it right, Honda has a 3% holdback on MSRP ($29,335) which is $880. So dealer net cost on an EX should be $23,471. I can't believe that I'm really getting offers that are within $400 of net dealer cost, so I'm wondering what's missing from my math.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

thanks for your input. it was the lowest quote i received: $35,000 including accessories installed.

hope you're enjoying your Touring model! thanks again.
  • deal_me_indeal_me_in Member Posts: 15
I think you are looking at it correctly. The way I see it dealers are willing to give up a big chunk of the holdback in order to move cars. They make some money back on the doc fees. And then try to sell you additional accessories, extended warranty, and maybe make some money on your trade-in and financing.

They must be trying to move inventory. When I asked dealers what colors they had in stock 2 of the 3 dealers had every color and the third had every color but white.

I just closed a deal yesterday on the above vehicle in Ocean Mist. Paid 33,500 OTD. Very happy with the deal - $300 under invoice plus the 2250 incentive included. Might have done better but dealer needs to make some money too. Most dealers were very willing to go into their holdback money but I had trouble locating the color and options we wanted which limited my bargaining power some. Very helpful info on this forum helped me along. Thank you.
  • bigdadi118bigdadi118 Member Posts: 1,207
If you think the deal is great, just jump into it and forget about how the dealer makes a profit. Let the dealer worries about that section.
As the other poster indicated, dealer can make money on many different ways, even in some that we will never know. Do you know AHFC gives dealer $500 for each buy-out of lease?
  • dc_buyer2dc_buyer2 Member Posts: 5
I'm about to send out my emails to wash dc area dealers. I too want just the EX - not sure yet about after market products. I'm going to send out a slightly lower price and see what happens. I can certainly let you know if I find a place lower. I assume the price you got was from Hersons or Sheehy since they typically go lower than norm.
  • dandydoniidandydonii Member Posts: 45
My guess is that Honda is giving its dealers incentives based upon volume as well. It is very difficult to track those types of incentives. But based upon posts in this forum that people are getting 1,000 less than invoice, I suspect something like this is going on.
  • takoma442takoma442 Member Posts: 2
Actually it was from Sport Honda. We should probably compare notes offline and post our results. I guess the Forum doesn't let us e-mail directly through our usernames, so here's a temporary e-mail to reach me. takoma442temp at gmail followed by dot com.

It sounds like my best strategy is to say that anything below invoice minus rebate is good and just see how low they will go.
  • T_FloT_Flo Member Posts: 6
OTD Price of a 2009 EX-L for $29,900. Salesmen told me inventory is through the roof nationwide.

Can get a Sienna XLE for $30,000 OTD but that has a dvd, compass, driver info center, 17in alloy wheels, fog lights. Ody comes with xm radio for a year and the backup camera on the mirror. Everything else is pretty equal. Can't believe the Ody stickering for close to $35K does not have driver info, compass, and foglights.
